  • I thought this was for something other than cooking.

The top review says you can have it for other uses than cooking, just don't use the same device otherwise the food may end up tasting funny.

        Q: How was the roast?
A: Not bad but I didn't go much on the stuffing! :o

        • 3 negs…sorry didn't mean to offend the scat fans…so that would be one neg each from the two girls & one from the cup, right? :p

Good price. Just be aware that a lot of the cheapies have slow response times. Fast thermometers can read in 6 seconds or so; the cheaper/slower ones can take between 15 and 45 seconds. This isn't a problem if you're sticking a probe into a roast that you've taken out of an oven, but might suck if it's a steak on top of an open BBQ.

    • If you stick it in the steak and hold it there while it cooks, will the reading be quicker? I'm guessing it's the change between temperatures that causes the delay, so if it's warming up with the steak, the delay would be minimised…

Although that doesn't help with poking into the oven for a quick read without taking it out…

      • That might work. Not sure if you have to hit a button on this one to keep reading the temp (ie. if it times out), so you might have hot fingers after a while if that's the case.

        • Helmuth is right. I have one of these, and didn't find it very effective. Real slow to take a reading, and if you're banging it in the Weber like I was, it'll melt once the heat gets to it. Not recommended. Spend a bit extra and get a decent one with a probe and a quick response time. I'm also almost certain the same thing happens if you keep it in the oven, too.

        • Are you talking about an electric weber? Obviously you can't use this in an electronic weber (or charcoal one with the lid closed) because it will melt just like in an oven… It's not made for that.

But I would hazard a guess that this would be fine for normal "no hood" barbecuing/grilling.

  • Thanks, grabbed one for my gadgets collection.

Might be good for reading computer component temps. Maybe :-D

  • I think I got the last one!

These are great for the price but two things to be aware of. First as Helmuth said they are slow, secondly they are not always accurate. To test put them in boiling water, they should read 100c. If the don't then at least you can see how far they are out by. For more info read this http://www.aussiebbq.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4561#p3…

    • Actually boiling water will rarely be at exactly 100 degrees dues to impurities which raise its boiling point. Maybe if you get distilled water.

No point using a thermometer that isn't accurate. Waste of money.

    • +1

If you know it misreads by about 3% you can adjust accordingly…. That said I have invested in a better thermometer but for the occasional cook/barbecuer these are better than guessing.

This is normal price on ebay and buyincoins. I think I got mine for $1.50 delivered.

    • You are not confusing this with the body, aquarium, or ambient temperature thermometers with much smaller range are you? Post a link if you find one cheaper.

    • links please?

  • If you missed out you can grab these from deal extreme for $5

    • +1

They are under $4 on eBay - just search for "Probe thermometer" (no quotes) then sort the results by Price = Lowest First

  • Almost forgot what it was til I checked on Ozbargain.
Got mine today. Took 15 days. Strange how this one took longer than the others.
