    I can confirm two things:

    1. The kit is great save for one thing.
    2. The fan, which is garbage. I only had the pi running for a few dozen hours, powered it off, and then the next time I powered it on, it had the death rattle. I contacted Labists and they eventually caved and sent me a replacement.

I do however recommend the FLIRC case, which is decent enough value at $21.50 at the moment:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Raspberry-Metal-Passive-Cooling-Ca…

    • The rattle stops after a while, at least for me it does. I never restart mine so it doesn't bother me.

    • Yeah I have my pi4 running headless in one of those cases running some software, and don't use a fan. It runs about 48 degrees, no fan, no aircon.

    • Can confirm the fan is garbage. Threw it out after 3 days.

    • Agreed flirc case is amazing!

I agree 100% … also FLIRC cases for Raspberry Pi 4 are reduced to $21.50 again @ Amazon AU - Perfect for 4GB Pi, but Pi 4 8GB does run extra heat and may not cope.

I bought from these guys recently, it came with a fake sandisk card which completely failed on the second image write. Cheap enough for a new genuine card that I didn’t particularly care.

  • @vodamerc
I bought a couple of these Labists kits last year and the SanDisk cards were both tested to be genuine. One Pi is still running with the original SanDisk card and the other I swapped out and put in a larger Samsung card.

    • How did you test the cards to determine their authenticity?

"How did you test the cards to determine their authenticity?"

Sorry for the late reply. Have had to deal with a family emergency all day.

Short and sweet, h2testw was one of the better known and trusted (freeware) programmes out there (for windows), found here
        https://h2testw.net/ EDIT: Now defunct

There are others as well as a few wikis on how to test and check for fake micros SDs. Most wikis also provide CLI's (Command Line Instructions) for both Windows and Linux users. As well, Apple users can also find test programmes for that platform, also covered in the various wikis through the magic of google. I can't name or recommend any for Apple as I never use Apple products.

EDIT: Oops, H2TestW was originally obtained from Softpedia, but has disappeared since I downloaded it last. Fortunately there are plenty of articles on the subject and with recommended alternatives.

The one mine came with was absolutely fake. Completely different in look to what was meant to be an identical genuine card, also came in no packaging.

Also on sale for $133.39 is:

LABISTS Raspberry Pi 4 Complete Starter Kit with Pi 4 Model B 4GB RAM Board, 64GB Micro SD Card Preloaded Noobs, 5V 3A Power Supply, Case, HDMI Cable, SD Card Reader (USB A&USB C), Fan, Heatsinks

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B085PVKJ6L/ref=olp_aod_redir_im…

Only difference is a larger 64GB Micro SD card. These cards are cheaper enough these days and this unit is $6.00 more for the extra 32GB capacity. 3xCamels report this as the lowest price for this kit,

  • I cut out a hole in the case over the fan and all is now good regarding fan noise. Also better cooling allowing over-clocking..

    • Aren't there already fan holes on the case above the fan? Did you just cut out those holes to make them bigger? Might as well leave it out of the case I guess. I've got mine running in a rackmount and I can still hear the darn thing.

      • +1

I cut out the mesh holes above the fan leaving just enough to allow the fan to be screwed exposing all the fan blades. Used a Dremel.

  • If I were buying RPI4, I'd get the 8GB RAM model. Mine is the Pi 400 that does not have the 8GB version, Firefox on Ubuntu would exhaust 4GB with a few tabs open (real-estate, carsales etc)

I doubt many people buying these are using them to run a browser. But if you’re using it as a computer, yeah I’d get 8gb.

  • Saw this on Amazon, but looking for 8gb. Their 8gb "pack" seems a bit overpriced for what you get?

    • What do you plan on using the pi for? You may not need all that memory.

    • +2

Get the pi from core-electronics and buy yourself a nice case assuming you are going for heavy use for the pi. I got the argon one m.2 @ amazon for about 60 and does well under load. All the other stuff you probably have them already.

  • Much better at retro gaming than the pi3?

    • In my experience it was much nicer. I was running retropie and following ETAprime on YouTube, I had very few issues (except for the flippin' N64 controller, but I think I was being ambitious).
