How is this a deal? You can get ear muffs from Bunnings for like $32?

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/dewalt-interceptor-ear-muffs_p58…

    • -8

      Wtf…

    • I've tried them. They don't provide a ton.

Also punch the head a bit.

    • +1

      lol.

    • This is definitely making it to controversial comment of the month.

    • +3

Very good noise cancelling as well

    • +1

      It doesn't has fruit logo

      • +2

        Neither do the AirPods Max

    • It's a good headphone.

      • No good for Apple's hi-def music tho

    • Ear muffs has sound reduction not noise cancelling

  • +7

But it doesn't even support lossless. 🤦‍♂️

    • +1

Not really a bad thing when 99.9% of the population cant hear the difference

      • +6

I have DragonFly Cobalt Blue and playing Hi-Res Lossless on my AKG 712 Pro and I can definitely hear the music comes more, "alive"

        • +7

Many people prefer the convenience of wireless noise cancelling audio, on your commutes you're not going to be able to hear the extra details anyway

        • +3

Do the test, you might surprise yourself.

        • I'm in your camp, but stuff wires.

My dragontail keeps disconnecting cos my type C port must be loose.

        • +1

Try a blind test and post a screenshot of your results.

Like what? Do you want some 💦

    • -6

      wh-1000xm3 destroys these

      • +8

They really don't. Every review I have seen have given sound quality, build, and noise cancellation to AirPods Max.

        Don't believe me?
        https://www.whathifi.com/au/advice/apple-airpods-max-vs-sony…

Despite saying all this, it still doesnt mean it should be worth the $690.

        • +1

They are also raving about the XM4's sound quality but I returned them because it sounded worse than some of Sony's older models (and I don't mean the 1000X series). Sennheiser Momentum 3 is my current benchmark for BT audio quality (if not for ANC), and I've heard most of the top of the range models with the notable exceptions of the Master & Dynamic MW65. I've lost trust in What Hi-Fi as of late.

  • +21

These are ugly as all hell. Like wearing 2 giant Macaroons (ignore the Mac ref). Seriously, deez are some horror muffs. Get back here Jony.

    • what is a pretty headphone that sounded good?

      • +1

Bowers and Wilkins PX are beautiful and sound great. Sennheiser Momentum 3 too.

        • +1

i am not sure about the egg look. egg or macaroons?

          • @jmel: They look great in real life and look and feel premium.

Admittedly I have not seen the AirPods Max in real life so maybe they look better in person 🤷‍♀️

        • +1

I own the PX7 (the current model) and wasn't impressed. I prefer the Sennheisers and the B&O H9i/H8i. I picked up the H8i on sale last week for $220 and they sound great and the ANC is surprisingly powerful, especially considering they were released in 2018. The price tag on the box at JB is $650.

          • @elektron: I haven’t heard the PX7 but apparently the sound signature has changed to be much bassier which is a shame. I’m looking at the Sennheisers as I love the way they sound but by all accounts the bluetooth is a buggy mess which would drive me crazy.

            • @get-innocuous: Don't get me wrong, I love impactful bass - just not the quantity at the expense of quality, as is the case with the XM4's. If you don't like strong bass, then you may not like the Sennheisers and should probably check out the B&O H9i. This could be a personal preference, but I love the slam of the Momentums and the overall PX7 sound signature doesn't engage me in the same way the Sennheisers do. I also feel that the vocals on the B&W's are slightly subdued and prefer the more forward mids in the Sennheisers.

    • +1

Not as ugly as when you put them in their case.

  • +4

Even at this price they still cost more than my 2020 SE! 🤣
$200 bucks under retail is a bargain for Apple though, so good find OP!

    • +9

I agree that these headphones are pricey but why are you comparing a brand new Apple product to the price of an entry level phone that was based on a 6 year old design when it was launched? The R&D of these 2 devices couldn’t be more different.

      • +9

        Yeah you're right sorry…
I was just making broad cost to utility comparisons, not really thinking about all that other stuff.

        • +1

Don’t be sorry, it’s not about being right or wrong here, we both agree that they’re expensive. For some people, quality headphones are important and from what I’ve read, these are pretty good.

          • +2

@bozbargain: I think they’re more of a status symbol than actually $900 good. Maybe like $500 good?

            • +5

@ATangk: More like a bogan symbol, albeit a cashed up one, and a perfect example of money doesn’t equal taste.

              • @Lps: Bogans dont get airpods max do they? They get maccas bags with booze inside.

                • +4

@ATangk: Bogan doesn’t necessarily mean piss poor

                  • @Lps: Well no, but they aren't going after the latest shiniest tech either.

"It is defined as "an uncultured and unsophisticated person; a boorish and uncouth person" in the 2016 edition of the Australian National Dictionary."

                    • +2

@ATangk: They’re the ones who perceive ‘latest and shiny’ as high quality - just because it’s latest and shiny, which most likely takes sophisticated off the table. Anyway as a function over form person I’m always going to struggle a bit with products which tip the balance the opposite way.

            • @ATangk: What makes them worth the money for me if they easily replaceable ear pads/cups. I bought these last week because my Surface headphones cups have both ripped apart and there’s no way to replace them. That’s a $500 headset down the drain. With these I can buy new ones from Apple for $100.

The sound, noise cancellation, and transparency mode are all pretty much market leading. Transparency mode is legit magic.

              • +3

@MrFunSocks: You can replace the surface ones - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/replace-the-ear-…

You can also buy new earpads for the Bose/Sony.

                • @ihfree: Nice! I searched for this and couldn't find anything. I'll get them replaced too haha. TBH it was mainly just an excuse for me to be able to justify buying them for myself, and I'm glad I did. They're much better than the Surface Headphones. A few guys at my work have the XM3 and XM4s and they both had a listen to mine with their music and both agreed that both sound and noise cancellation are better on the Airpods, especially the noise cancellation.

                  • @MrFunSocks: lol, I suspected so. I have Surface headphones as well. They're great productivity headphones but there's a noticeable downgrade in sound quality compared to other headphones I have.

              • @MrFunSocks: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/replace-the-ear-…
It all in the mind. Freedom is much cheaper than what Apple offers :(

                • @taki: Freedom certainly is all in the mind when you consider the products that Microsoft and Sony create.

Have you looked at Windows recently? Surface laptops? DRM on the PS4.

All corporations are guilty of anti-consumer practices.

                • @taki: I even asked a MS support person if I could buy replacement earpads for my Surface Headphones and they said no! haha. Only way to do it is to go through the repair process on the MS site after registering the headphones I now find out.

Good price for the new ones too, only $62. Ordered 2 days ago and being delivered today.

  • +2

    Thank you OP,

For this price I think it is time to pull my trigger.

Hard to see apple product gets heavily discounted

    • +2

These are legit amazing headphones. I bought some last week and the sound is amazing. The transparency mode will legit blow your mind.

      • +1

Amazing's very subjective. At this price I would expect them to sound good, but have you compared them to the Sennheiser Momentum 3?

        • No need, they're AMAZING

        • No, but have compared them to the XM3 and XM4 and these are definitely better in both sound quality and noise cancellation.

          • @MrFunSocks: Of course, these are muddy sounding mass market headphones (alongside Bose) that cost half the price of the Airpods Max. I bought the XM4 and returned the next day - and I'm a Sony fan. If you want luxurious quality and premium sound - try Bang & Olufsen or Sennheiser.

      • +1

Yeah, I have the XM4s and regret borrowing my brothers Max headphones. The sound quality is a big step up, and if I hadn't been too slow I would have picked up a pair of these.

  • +4

Is it going to have same fate as homepod

Both sound well, expensive, no headphone jack and only Siri.

    • +6

      /r/consoom

    • +8

      This isn’t ozWorkHarder mate
You’re talking to a whole community of people who want things to be more affordable

      • -6

I only meant to those complaining apple products unaffordable.

        • +7

Saying that something is a ridiculous price != complaining apple products unaffordable

(and yes, I've got Focal cans that are more exxy than these, it's not a pure $$$ thing)

          • +3

@mickeyjuiceman: Agreed, the Focal Elears I got for $499 would absolutely mop the floor with these

          • -3

            @mickeyjuiceman: Porche VS Hyundai

same four wheels, do the same thing.

Porche is 10 times more expensive than Hyundai.

would you say Porche is overpriced?

            • +5

@pzhon: No, that's NOTHING like what I'm saying at all. How on earth did you get there? Am I arguing for cheap headphones somewhere? If so, where? The bit where I say I've got cans that are more expensive?

You need to read before just reflexively licking Apple's bum yet again.

              • @mickeyjuiceman: alright, lets replace Hyundai to be BMW

BMW VS Porche = Focal VS Apple

                is above fair enough?

Porche is still bit more expensive than BMW.

You bought Focal is purely your budget OR its royal customer, doesnt mean airpod max is not worth that price.

If you dont like how apple prices it, you could have ignored this ?

i am sorry if i offensed you.

                • +6

@pzhon: What he's trying to say is that these are $700 headphones on special ($900 usually) that sound like $300 headphones from any other brand. He's not saying they're unaffordable, he's saying they're crap value for money because they are compared to the competition

That's why these aren't worth the cost, and the focals that you can buy for a similar price (The Elears and the Elegia) were $1600 at launch.

                • +1

@pzhon: I'd say Focal versus Apple would be closer to a Rolls Royce versus a gold plated Hyundai. The Airpod Max from what I can gather aren't all that bad but are not great considering their price point. It's no different to pointing out how overpriced Beats by Dr Dre were. I tested a pair and found them to be not that much better than a $100 pair of Sennheisers that I had (I don't remember the model number).

Focal is a truly premium brand with their headphones more often than not being significantly more expensive than Apple's e.g. the Utopia: $5499 or even the more reasonably priced Celestee: $1399.

              • +1

@mickeyjuiceman: I think what @pzhon is trying to bring to attention is that the experience is defining factor.

Historically, Apple products were marketed primarily in experience-focused campaigns: The products offered a premium use experience, even though the hardware was similar to competitors in the space. The communication design methodology of this marketing material has shifted to offerings featuring hardware innovations, leading with performance statistics; how many megapixels is the camera, how fast is the processor, how large is the screen, etc.

However, to assume that Apple has never catered to the general market is unequivocally incorrect: They have always offered products with a range of specifications and price; All in the same packaging, backed by the same experience marketing methodology.

It is only natural for the general buyers to complain about overpriced offerings when Apple's marketing focus has shifted from selling experience, to selling hardware and performance, and trying to leg-up the competition.

                • -3

@monky: exactly! ppl won’t understand, but only too much hate.

Again, love or hate, it will still be there. Until it is not recognised by the market. Apple will disappear just like Nokia and Motorola.

                  • +4

@pzhon: Please stop. You're terrible at this.

                    • @Dream-cast: The consoom comment seems to accurately reflect this guy.

There's no talk of the product or its features, just comparing brands.

Work hard so you can buy more - What an awful and shallow life.

    • +1

what about those company who sell power cable that make your music sing harder for $2000 a meter?

      • +3

The same dumb people buy the Monster cables and Apple headphones in one purchase.

        • Maybe, but if it's the case, they'd be ignorant of what the products are capable of.

Monster cables - demonstrably no difference compared to coat hangers. Other cables carry ones or zeros. Sharpness of the ones or roundness of the zeros makes minimal difference. Quality of the cable generally only matters for longer runs.

Apple headphones - sound good, noise cancelling is good… few weird design quirks. Not so great on price/performance.

    • Yet again, demonstrating your poor attitude.

      • -1

      • +6

Nar, I need a pair for every room in the house. I'm a typical apple user btw.

        • You can buy the XDR Door suction mount to go on the back of the toilet door for $179.

          • @giventofly: I have one for each of the headphone spots already. Got a few back up too.
