Might as well put an [Android] tag.

Bought one last deal. Pretty useless imo, it takes at least a day to find the tag. The location is also very broad.

For guys that neg me, you really have no idea what airtag is capable of. Already have people hide it in somebody car to track their location.

        https://theconversation.com/remember-apple-airtags-and-find-…

        • Everyone knows what it is capable of. You could use a tile which has less measures to prevent stalking, or if you are concerned the tile network isn’t sufficient then just get a cheap mobile phone with GPS and use any “find my phone” like feature to track it with zero dependence on other people’s cellular devices to help you perform the tracking.

If people want to stalk others, they can do so easily and more reliably than using an AirTag which actually has some measures built in to notify people of it’s presence.

          • @Smigit:

just get a cheap mobile phone with GPS and use any “find my phone” like feature

Can any cheap mobile phone do 1 year battery? Actually I do understand that is why Apple build in some feature to prevent people to use it to stalking.

But not everybody are technically minded , they may not know what to do if happened to them.

            • @superforever: Does a tracker need to follow someone for a whole year to do damage? 1 - 2 days is ample.

You don’t even need a tracking device at all if you really want to follow someone. Or in the case of a family or GF who isn’t technically inclined and lives with the individual, you could probably just turn in “Find my friend” or a similar service on their phone and then track them through that via their own device.

@Smigit: But you never know what people may want to use it for

                • @superforever: No you don’t, but the point is this isn’t enabling anything people can’t do already.

      • For 3 days max .. then you get a "An airtag is following you"

        • You get that even if you are not iPhone user?

          • +2

@ce5himm: Not yet, but Apples releasing an Android app to allow that.

It’s a bit hard to make out, but there seems to be two ways they deter tracking.

            A) if you own an Apple device you’ll get a notice not long after it’s identified you have a tag near you that isn’t yours, and the tag owner isn’t near by. I heard this was like 20 mins or so. The notice will be to your phone

            B) after 3 days or so if an AirTag is moving but the owner isn’t near by, the device starts to beep.

To address concerns for non iPhone users Apple is making an Android app available which gives them that active checking for scenario A. They are also bringing down that unattended check (people without a mobile phone for example) from 3 days to between 8 and 24 hours

Ultimately there’s room for issues, but they seem to be doing more than most.

            • @Smigit: The beeper is easily disconnected.

                • @Smigit: How many people do you think will install it?
How many people have the Tile app installed but don't own a Tile? Do you?

                  • @bargaino: The Apple Android apps not doing the same thing as the tile app. Based on the article it’s purely an app people can install if they want to detect trackers. It supposedly won’t let you manage trackers which still would require an Apple device.

The tile app as far as I’m aware does not have this feature and therefore there’s no reason to install the app if you don’t own a tile.

I’m sure uptake won’t be massive, but people concerned about being tracked will have the option.

        • I am not sure if it varies or not, but in my case, I have an airtag on my car key and my wife drove my car from the morning (with the airtag of course) and she got a warning message from her iPhone at night after roughly 10hours

I would spend more to buy airtag or Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag because Tile is way behind in terms of technology and its frequency to ping the device's location

    • +1

I would buy an AirTag, using the JB gift card that was purchased for me for that very purpose, but JB refuses to sell AirTags. Pah!

      • Because they released a product that is considered dangerous and deadly to children.

        Button batteries are insidious

        • That's true.
Do we know how hard/easy it is for the battery to become dislodged or are you more concerned that due to their size they may swallow them?

  • -1

Samsung smart tags are so much better for Android. So many Samsung devices out there that can ping the device location

    • Is it available in Australia? Like I am trying to find it from a normal vendors like JB Hi-Fi or official Samsung store, but I am having no luck.
So I am thinking either I suck at searching or it's not officially released in Australia (or both).

  • +2

Why anyone would buy a tile at this stage is beyond me. Spend a bit more money and get something that actually works seamlessly like the galaxy smart tags or airtags.

    • +1

I only use Tile tags to find my wallet or car keys when they're lost in a crack under my bed or something. Works perfectly in that use case.

    • +1

If you want to track stolen items, rather than lost items, the Tile not beeping or alerting a theft of the tags presence via their phone is likely handy.

That scenario aside, I think the tile is at a big disadvantage. Even then the other tags using the iPhones network like Chipolo might be a substitute…I’m not sure how they work in the “stolen device” scenario and whether they alert the thief.

      • I agree with you, though I have zero faith in Tile's ability to track beyond the range of Bluetooth since its network is so poor. I pried open my airtag, removed the speaker and installed one on my bike.

        • Was it easy to remove the speaker?

          • @nightelves: Nope, requires a lot of force and effort, especially if you don't want to damage the casing. You can follow this tutorial. Just remember to glue it back together to keep it water proof.

            • @neilpatrickharris: Thanks that's the exact same video I just watched. Hoping Apple come out with an update to allow you to manually enable sound or not.

              • @nightelves: That'll never happen loll, if anything they might increase the frequency at which it beeps when not near you to make sure others aren't being stalked.

  • I have used these for over a year, finding around the house is ok for the beeping and can integrate with Alexa/google ok. It's also worth noting that these along with most trackers use button batteries and there has been some rumblings from concerned parents that their children can eat them which is why airtags are not in JB https://www.news.com.au/technology/gadgets/wearables/big-w-j…

  • +1

These are much slimmer and compact than airtags. They work well enough for me but you have to pay a monthly fee for the extra features that come free with others.

    Apple the startup killer.

    • Had this for about 2 years and everytime I needed it it did not work 😂, I found out later that the battery compartment is not waterproof so the battery kept getting rusted. Getting annoying after a while.

  • +2

I hate these Tiles….from my experience, they are expensive and less useful than the toy on my keychain…

The only thing it does consistently is making the annoying beeping sound when it is in my back pocket and I accidentally sit on it. I have hardly ever found my stuff because of using its function….and any somehow “useful” functions required expensive subscription which many people actually forget to mention when they compare this plastic to airtag.

  • Didn’t JB stop selling Airtags due to them having a coin battery? Although it does say unavailable due to “high demand”….
