Add cubes of carrot and potatoes to the curry.

Coat chick fillet with breadcrumbs and panko and fry.

Serve on the side with the chicken or pour it over the top. Also serve with rice.

try doing it with the seafood marinara mix from colesworth, it might surprise you.

was introduced to it at a small curry place in Kanda in Tokyo and couldn't get over it

The 200gram packets are usually about $5 at most Asian grocers anyway, coming out cheaper.
    Still, good in a pinch.

  • Seems expensive.. I used to buy the large packs in Asian grocer for $4 something. Have not bought any in a while though.

Oh yea, I remember these when I was a student in a rent house.

Buy chicken thigh/wings/drumsticks, add potatoes/carrots/peas and simmer in a pot.

Spoiler: It tastes good because it has MSG.

      Prefer MCG…

    Is MSG, is GOOD.

  • Palm oil… Almost 30% is fat. 😂

These are pretty crap compared to java, Vermont or kokumaro brand roux blocks. I recommend adding some grated apple, soy, Worcestershire sauce and honey to the mix and serve with a piece of pork/beef katsu along side the normal chicken stock, potato, carrot and onion.

      THANK YOU!

I was just popping in to suggest vermont and Kokumaro.

The 'golden curry' is the least japanese curry ive ever had.

Before the whole covid thing; i was the japanese curry fiend; trying several in kyoto, tokyo and osaka (and surrounding areas) not to mention countless versions locally… golden is the worst.

Still better than no curry at all, but eeeeesh.

The most true-to-japan curry is by far Hanaichi brand frozen curry packs; but its a little bland to suit western palates. At least its true, if weak.

Tldr; id eat golden rather than have none. But its by far the most indian tasting asian curry out of the lot.

Are they available at Asian grocers locally?

        • +1

Absolutely, they're quite common, even some IGA's stock the better brands.
Just coles and woolies stock the garbage

      • Yep, I'd be so happy if they opened a CoCo-Kare here!

      • The most true-to-japan curry is by far Hanaichi brand frozen curry packs; but its a little bland to suit western palates.

If it's bland to Western palates, what about other palates that naturally have higher tolerances?

Yep I much prefer the Vermont brand (apple & honey). It's usually cheaper at my local Asian grocery store and it breaks down much better than Golden Curry, so no lumpy bits.

      • +1

If you're just making sauce and not a mix, best way to break down any curry cube is in a mug of water in the microwave, crushing with a fork at 30 second intervals :)

        Thickens up well.

  • which is hotter - merium or mild??

Mild > Medium > Hot > Extra Hot
