What's Happened to Your Local Masters Building

Interested in seeing what's happened to everyone's masters buildings after they all closed up shop a few years ago.
Coffs Harbour was my local, Ours is now home to a Sydney tools, Anaconda, 4wd Supa centre and a world gym.

    It’s now a Bunnings

Adelaide Airport Masters -> Adelaide Airport Bunnings.

      • Yep! That was my local one and thank goodness Bunnings took its location.

        • That's my store too! Fab location, on the way to and from my partner's place! Still missing those Masters bargains though, like the Stanley Fatmax impact driver and drill combo!!

          • @Scorpex: Never too busy at Adelaide Airport store. Hate going to Mile End.

      • Ours already had a Bunnings literally across/opposite the road haha

    • +1

Mine in sydney west is a bunning as well and old bunning building 1 block away is sitting empty lol. Sensible decison too as this is a better location with heaps more parking and easier to get to for me.

      • Northmead? Sounds like that one.

        • Yep

        • Last i heard the old site was going to be turned into a woolies.

        Hi neighbour :)

I'm a 5 min walk from the new Bunnings.
Was really hoping the Masters was turned into a Woolies though.

    • Same for me. The existing northmead bunnings moved from their old site to the newer and larger masters just down the road.

      • Yes thats the one i am referring to

    • +1

Mine too, although it's just the bunnings that was previously 3km further down the road. They moved into the masters, which is admittedly a nicer building, and the old bunnings got knocked down. It was slated to be a Kaufland, but then they pulled out despite being 25% of the way through the development process. It was very odd, and the fact that it happened at the same time the coronavirus was starting gives me big conspiracy theory vibes.

      • Oakliegh south :)

    Still empty.

    • The one in Cranbourne?

  • Never had one.

  • +1

Was built for Masters but never opened in Nowra. Still sits empty years later

  • +2

Spewing they never caught on. I never got to visit one but I heard they were too dear. Over in NZ they have like 3 big box hardware stores. Mitre 10 Mega was great.

    • I found the prices ok. They didn't have a lot of familiar brands and didn't stock a lot of things you'd expect.

      • and didn't stock a lot of things you'd expect.

Yes they did. You just couldn't find them…

    • +5

It would have been better named Big W Home, was a weird mix of houseware and hardware. The aisles were very Big W ish.

    • +3

I think the main issue is that Woolies did go too hard too fast.
By opening too many stores too quickly they could not afford the first years of low trade.
On top of that I believe the expectation of high profits did not help (specially from Lowes)

The funny part is that Bunnings bashed Masters because the feel of the store was too much "shopping centre like", now the new Bunnings are all similar…

      • Yeah I thought they initially opened way too many stores, kind of over stretched.

I haven't seen the new look Bunnings stores. Down here in Tassie they still look the same as when they first opened. The prices are much higher though.

    • +1

I really liked their section for nuts/bolts/fasteners - things were labelled and it was just so much easier to find the right thread, size. Bunnings is a mess.

(I know it's because they had low trade, but it was refreshing to be able to find staff when you needed them - I think they were so bored they actually seemed eager to help)

      • Well due to lack of competition my local Bunnings is basically the same price as smaller hardware stores now so I've began going back to them and it's so refreshing not dealing with hordes lol

The one next to Canberra airport turned into a Bunnings.

SA Noarlunga Centre - get your jabs
it never opened as a Masters
    .

Small world - you bought my defected Datsun 1200 from me about 20 years ago :P

Northmead NSW one became Bunnings, probably because the old Bunnings which was further down the road just moved their stuff into post-Master's building and painted the whole thing green.

    • +2

Also because they sold the land prior to developers & needed a new spot. Expect another high rise on that side of the road soon*

    • Rumours say the old site will be a Woolies

  • +1

Chullora (NSW) is now a shopping center:

    • World Gym
    • Supercheap Auto
    • Fantastic Furniture
    • Baby Kingdom

    More shops coming.

    • fantastic was there while it was still masters

  • +2

Ours in West Gosford on the Central Coast is now a HomeCo. It was a shame that Masters had to close down, but the HomeCo seems to have done a decent job repurposing the site. It has a number of shops like a Bing Lee, Fantastic Furniture, and a whole other range of furniture shops. Not to mention the entire site was a redevelopment so all the other stores surrounding the Masters are still doing ok.

    • This is another place where the Bunnings moved when Masters opened. Rumour has it that Bunnings was shitty that the Masters driveway was closer to the Central Coast Highway than theirs, and thought they would get more traffic, so they moved to the other side of the highway. I beleive the old Bunnings site is still empty? It was that car museum for a while though…

Recently went to Blacktown Big W which gets major store upgrade. Somewhat feel like the old Masters.

  • +2

Tooronga (Vic) Masters site is now predominately a Woolworths supermarket, the largest I have ever seen

  • Penrith masters became a homeco - rebel sport, bing lee, repco, couple of other furniture places, a pet store, nick scali, gyg & freedom furniture across the way. Only ever went into it once when it was actually a masters.

The one in Wagga Wagga was vacant until about 3 weeks ago. Spotlight have now refitted it and moved in.

It's interesting to me because Spotlight took over the old Bunnings building in Wagga Wagga when they relocated to larger premises. But Spotlight outgrew that building in little over 4 years, I think. Bunnings is soon to be on the move again and it will be interesting to see who moves into their premises.

Mind you, the council members who approved the move for Bunnings must have rocks in their heads. The intersection where they're relocating to is already worse than a disaster with morning rush hour traffic banked up on two of the four directions for more than a kilometre. Okay, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and other capital city people, that might not sound much to you, but Wagga Wagga is a regional city with a population of some 60,000. Sorry about the off-topic diversion.

    • +1

When the Coffs Harbour Bunnings moved (old spot now ozgroup berries) into a similar sounding spot they actually redid and improved the whole intersection, added more turning lanes etc

      • That's probably because Coffs Harbour has a decent council, unlike Wagga Wagga council!

      • Has Coffs Council done anything yet about the intersection of Bray St and the highway? Used to be an absolute nightmare getting out of the cinema carpark and onto Bray St.

  • Immediately got turned into a Bunnings once Masters went bung. Don't even really remember it being a Masters site.

  • Bunnings

  • Still an empty building :(

  • Rebel sport

  • Coles, TK Maxx and some small retailers

    • That's the first masters one opened wasn't it. The other one further down Ballarat road still sits abandoned opposite a Bunnings.

      • Yep, Braybrook

      • The other masters site is turning into a spotlight

  • +1

    Knocked down

  • Ours changed into a Bunnings :_(

  • Bibra lake, WA is just sitting there fenced off with temporary fencing. Some masters signage is still in place.

  • Williams Landing was my local. It's been demolished, the block where it was is still empty

    • bizzare choice to demolish it, and then not do anything with it. Any idea why?

      • The land is very close to the train station and I imagine the long term plan is to build high density apartments/offices there. But demolishing it in the meantime didn't make much sense to me either…

        • Especially since it was built for Masters, I guess maintenance and security would have been more expensive if it was sitting empty.
Shame really I would have loved to live in it. I always wanted a house where I could kick a footy inside…

  • Now Bunnings in Oakleigh Vic. Another Bunnings like only 10min away in Moorabbin

  • +2

The Caroline Springs store today looks completely sad and neglected surrounded by a tall cyclone fence with metre-tall weeds overtaking the car park. Why did they open this store directly opposite a Bunnings?? Anyway, I bought a lot of heavily discounted stuff when they were closing down; too cheap to walk away from. Unfortunately, it was more expensive than I thought because it’s all still sitting in my shed unused.

  • +1

One (Dandenong South) is now a Bunnings.
Other in Cranbourne Homemaker, which is next door to a Bunnings already, is still vacant.

  • The land on which one Masters in WA was to be built was eventually bought by a church.

  • +1

In Butler WA it became a Home Co Centre.
    https://www.home-co.com.au/centre/butler/

  • Hearing some people say they worked at or managed a department at Masters to get a leg in at another placement when in fact they have not and there is limited scope to confirm previous employment record at Masters. Told by a mate….
Masters site in Sunbury VIC appears to be sitting idle, no sign of change since wind up.

  • My closest turned into a Home Consortium, which now has Amart, Supercheap, Good Guys, a rug shop, a bed shop, and a kids play gym place. There was a Snooze, but it shut down.

It's OK, but there is way too much parking compared to what is used/required.

    • Also my local

its pretty quiet which i like.

i dont know how those Rug shops stay in business.

      • Rug Shops don’t, they are always closing down, some have been closing for years.

  • Hoxton Park converted to a Bunnings

Also the Masters Distribution centre which was next to the Big W one that was down the road of the Masters Hoxton Park is now a site for DB Schenker

  • Became a Decathlon and Amart furniture store.

    • It’s a dead center, both stores wound struggle. I assume Knox?

  • +2

BCF, Amart Furniture, Supercheap Auto and Barbecues Galore now reside on 'Woolworths Street' in Everton Park, Brisbane. A sad remnant. There is still a Woolworths supermarket in the complex at least.

  • +1

The one down my way never opened as a Masters. It was being used as an ice skating rink for kids in school holidays and has now been transformed into a COVID-19 vaccination clinic.

  • Epping gone to a amart

  • +1

Our Keysborough one had an IGA, Aldi, Pet Stock and a stack of other retailers. It’s pretty busy all the time.

The IGA rivals any coles/Woolies and had a huge offering.

  • Went partially to a Toys R Us then that went bust too, now furniture shops etc

  • The Rockhampton one was bought by Bunnings and now is a bunnings store. The old bunnings store is still standing vacant.

  • +4

I'm working as a fire safety engineer on the all the existing Masters buildings across Australia. All existing Masters buildings are being converted to Home Consortium shopping centres, which are owned majorly by Aurrum Holdings.

    • So home consortium build / own / maintain the infrastructure that is leased to retail stores?

  • Mine turned into a Bunnings

  • Bunnings swooped in right at the perfect time and bought the site before it had actually commenced. Everything was approved etc and all the hard bit done by them then Bunnings overtook it. Old Bunnings site is now a gym, furniture shop and a few others

  • Ours is a council building, they spent a lot of money to renovate it so there was a lot of people against it.

  • Now just a shed…what a pity….the Bunnings closest to me just couldn't be bothered with customer service after Masters went out of business.

  • Masters was always so much better for customer service, cleaner stores, better lighting and you could find someone to help, Bunnings is horrible for service.

  • Still empty. Not sure why they went out of business. They had Aircon, everything was nice and modern and customer service was waay better than Bunnings (coming from someone who use to work at Bunnings).
