With regards to VoLTE (LTE calling), according to this whirpool post, it supports Vodafone VoLTE out of the box and you'll need to contact Boost to activate VoLTE.

I have a Samsung S10 with a damaged screen. Still usable but 1/5 of the screen is black and 2/5 of the screen has dodgy touch screen. Bought one of these as replacement…seems decent for the price. Will have to remember it's not water proof hue hue

Probably more than they would need. Sometimes less is better. Nice big screen though.
Guess it would depend on what they would use and need from a phone- whether or not they plan on using it while out a lot (harder to travel with a big phone), how technologically savy they are, etc.
Yeah I agree something basic would be best probably not the ideal choice then. They dont want anything huge that you cant fit in your pocket and they're definately not tech savvy unfortunately!
If they're only gonna use it for texting and calling, consider a non smart phone for them.

Also, despite people's complaints on here about how hard it is to get Optus phones unlocked, I've never had an issue or been charged (with the exception of reeeeeally old phones from like 2012). Just make sure whichever phone number you use is one that has been with Optus for a while.

So things like the 8GB ram, NFC, 48MP, dual sim would all be extras they never make use of.
It seems like the cheapo Telco phones might be the way to. You know the ones with 2GB of ram. The only thing I would add is to research screen quality. Some of them are atrocious and hurt your eyes. Lol.
Look for a Optus Realme C3 on eBay. $100 with good enough cameras, RAM(3Gb), Storage (64Gb), NFC with a reasonable screen. (Only HD+ screen but size is good for "old" eyes). Best of all, the processor is actually super fast for the price range. (Similar to this A91??)
