Small Optus Data Plan 5GB $7.50/Month (Includes Optus Sport Access, Reverts to $15 after 12 Months) @ Optus (App)

1530

Optus is currently offering 50% off their data sim plans via the Optus app. So the cheapest way to get Optus sports is on their 5GB plan. The plans are also unlimited downloads at 1.5mbs after the limit is reached. So a decent deal for those that want Optus sports.

If you can use Optus app, meaning you are already have at least 1 Optus service. So this is only for people to add a second service.

    • +7

Just get a cheap prepaid sim and then you get to use the Optus app.

  • +2

Maybe this is a sign of the future plans for Amaysim?

Edit: Missed that it is data only?

    • +6

Yeah, if it was a mobile phone plan with calls (with VolTE and WiFi calling) and SMS they would have had me…I don't use much data (almost none) but Optus has better coverage in the bush spot I go to…Telstra is crap, Vodaphone OK at this particular spot..

      • +1

Optus seems to have a lot of IBS where I go so I have stuck with Amaysim, tried Telstra in a few of the same locations and lucky to get a signal.

        • +1

          IBS??? In-building Solution?

      • Check out https://moosemobile.com.au/plans (Optus), it's still available by the looks of it, so seems like a good fit for you.

I'm using them on the 6Gb/$9.80 plan atm, no issues with them, also like that you can check your remaining data online unlike Circles which is app only. Good site layout too.

I went with them because of the pricing and the 1 year lock in, just like this deal vs bouncing around (port in and out - waiting 31 days for Kogan) from Kogan, Aldi & Amaysim which lasts 1 to 3 months only.
Kogan $14.90/90 days & $4.90/month are the best bang for buck, IMHO.

I'm using Circles for bulk data, $22/50Gb (also pricing locked/1 year) for now/next few months.

  • +1

    Is this pool data?

    • +1

      yes

    • Yes Optus offers data sharing with all there post paid plans not prepaid though

  • +1

i have NBN and account and i can't see this.

i see only 50% off watch, tablet and data sim plan fees

    • +6

What you are seeing is correct. Click on that offer and it will take you to a new page, and then select Data Sims.

  • +4

    This is targeted

  • +10

    25gb for $12.50 with 5g too!

  • +1

I see it in the app. 50% off data SIMs and some other deals.

    • +1

After Covid and mass unemployment they have to.

  • +4

Seems like doing a credit check again for existing customers

    • +2

      How can you tell?

  • +13

Optus lost the rights to the ucl.

Optus sport is worth less than what it was 3 months ago.

They'll probably get outbid for the PL next

    • +3

This. Stan Sport now own the right to run the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
Kayo - All other major European club football + EFL.
And then there is Paramount plus - A league, W league, etc.
      Optus? - pfffff.

      • +5

Lol now Stan Sport, they expect people to pay $30 for Stan, their App is like from 10 years back. Seriously why is so hard to build good apps here in Straya ? No good devs or not enough budget to build apps ?

        • +2

I may be wrong, but I think it boils down to competition and greed. There is zero competition on that front.

      • +1

It is too expensive to chase all the content you want especially when you only really want 1 or 2 sports

Im a sucker I'll probably stick with my current optus deal as optus sports is included in my phone bill but you really reconsider whether its worth changing providers. The only thing that stops me moving is being able to stream it data free on public transport.

  • +8

Not to forget the loooooooooong ads on Optus Sports app. 1min ad on a 9min highlight is a shame

    • +5

I was watching the France vs Switzerland highlights (9 mins long) and I kid you not, that after only 40 odd seconds they went into a 1 min commercial on a 9 min video! It’s a joke!

    • +1

Yes they have ramped the ads up lately, non-skippable, and it's very annoying/off putting

  • +1

content especially sports is so fragmented these days, it was actually better when there was FTA & fox only

  • +2

    Mine still shows $15 :(

  • +2

did anyone get hit with a second credit entry on their file for the last free 3 months of 50gb to 150 GB deal for adding a second or third data plan?

    • How did you check? Had a look at one of the free credit report companies and didn't see any on mine.

  • +3

So it's unlimited internet for $7.50?

    • +1

      It says 5 GB.

    • +5

Yes… but after the first 5GB used it slows to 1.5mbps.

These cheap plans are nothing new. Telstra has their 5GB sim on sale for $5 last year (with the discount also only valid for 12 months).

      • Yeah I got that Telstra deal last year what a pain Telstra was honouring the $10 discount on the $15 plan, I actually ordered 3x of them and one didn't make the $45 cash back from cash rewards (which would've paid 9 months on each sim data plan) but they are handy especially with the unlimited data capped speed of 1.5Mbps slow down which is enough to stream one video stream like Netflix, I'm down too one plan certainly don't want too pay $15 per month πŸ‘πŸ˜

      • I hope they do this deal again, want to unlock a wifi device that's locked to them, I would use it/them for 6 months to get a cheaper unlock fee.

    • I wouldn't exactly call 1.5mbps "internet". It's basically just so emails will still come through. Can't game, can't stream anything and downloads will take all day. Even loading Facebook will take forever lol.

      • +1

Streaming has been fine for me on my Fetch Mighty PVR (one stream can cope and takes few seconds more too start video) and things like web browsing and emails etc can't even tell the difference (tested both Telstra and Optus at 1.5 Mbps)

        • +4

1.5Mbps is right around the cusp for standard quality video and the absolute minimum (technically under as it needs over 1.5mbps) for starting a Zoom call.

If it fluctuates like speeds do, you'll experience lengthy buffering and stuttering sessions. Largely unusable.

web browsing and emails etc can't even tell the difference

That's what I said, emails and basic web browsing are suited to this speed.

If it was possible to get perfectly usable unlimited internet for $7.50/month, they'd put themselves out of business lol.
Of course though your test of one device is much more than the extensive testing of telco's to analyse right where the cut off point of usable internet is and then introduce a cap just before that.

          • +1

@pennypincher98: Yupz agree when I said it's OK it can have its moments of being annoying with what you mentioned stuttering/buffering etc though things like YouTube are more OK as YouTube changes it's resolution depending on data speed, tried my best too find an Android app too use in an Android TV box too act as the way YouTube acts changing its resolution when needed but overall the experience is not too bad overall well if ones on an extreme budget

Umm true downloads can take all day though amazing how much data you can use over a month @ 1.5Mbps speed lolz

Love too know what Vodafones speed limiting of 2Mbps is like,.. they even have I think upto too 10Mbps speed limiting on there higher data plans

            • +1

              @Italkdigital:

they even have I think up to 10Mbps* speed limiting

That's around the same speed as Basic NBN (12Mbps ~ 10.8Mbps) and honestly quite a few still use that. So for one person it will do most of their needs nicely even once they hit their cap which would likely be quite high. Would likely cost a lot though.

              • +1

                @pennypincher98: We survived the 80's with a 56kps modem :)

@corky: I never ran out of memory on my 8MB PS2 Memory Card and I had years of games on it.. yet these days one photo could fill that πŸ˜‚

                • +1

@corky: So remember that the big cost with dial up was having to dial back in when say a 2 hour session has expired and it was hit and miss and few calls were needed to get back into dialup connection, yeah I went for the budget of budget dialup plans were they had timed sessions, I think 2 hour blocks (I think during peek times) so the dialup connection was shared with others, Alphink (2x guys started it, use to play quake 1 with one of them of course he had zero ping as he was playing within hosted game) was one budget dialup company that comes to mind, my first dial up plan I signed up with in the early 90s was with some university schemed up dialup, those were the days of internet

                  • @Italkdigital: Forgot about redialling, but do remember all the bells and whistles associated with connecting :)

  • -3

    Good, but still expensive!

    • +1

how so, care to list a cheaper plan unlimited data?

      • -2

        There are many.
Kogan, Catch, Coles which are cheaper at the moment.

        • None of those are unlimited data are they?

          • +2

            @corky: Isn't this 5GB data?

            • @mkowarkski: Unlimited data though,.. 5gb wouldn't last me 5 minutes otherwise there would be no point too these small data plans, something too consider compared too the MVNO providers cheaper deals but depends what your using these plans for? this might be enough too replace ones more expensive NBN connection if speed is of no concern and is single user situation, my situation is keep my stupid Fetch Mighty box happy with an internet connection, otherwise all my fast internet comes through my mobile phone

            • +2

@mkowarkski: Yes 5g at full speed, then throttled to 1.5mbs for unlimited, catch have 4g for $10 month, kogan 40g for $4.90 for new customer introductory offer first month only, kogan's data only 8g for $29.90

              • +2

                @corky: All good, enjoy

I prefer to port in and out with others

                • +2

@mkowarkski: Yes, I port in and out too to get best possible deals. Having said that the optus 3 month free was a good data deal so will stick with that for a while, over a year it's about $18.75 per month for 50g data

                  • +1

@corky: Yeah I went with 3x of those free Optus 150gb data plans, spewing I didn't order more but one can get to creedy though trying my best to be a true OzbargainerπŸ‘πŸ˜ I've managed over 300GB data plus the base of 150GB of data on one of them at capped speed of 1.5 Mbps 😜

  • +1

Just ported from Optus to Mates 2 days ago. This offer would’ve been great :(

    • +4

You're forgetting to read point two

      50% off plan fees
New or existing consumer services who purchase or recontract via the My Optus App to 1. a tablet or watch on a device payment plan with an Optus Choice Data SIM Plan or Optus Choice Connected Watch Plan or 2. an Optus Choice Data SIM Plan will receive 50% off the monthly Optus Choice Data SIM Plan or Optus Choice Connected Watch Plan fees for 12 months. Excludes Business customers. Not available with other discount offers unless specified. Discount forfeited if you cancel or move to an ineligible plan. This offer is available in selected channels only. Maximum of 5 discounts per billing account. Available until 31/07/21. Discount will apply by second bill.

      • +1

Yeah, I guess it is not an AND but an OR for 1 and 2. Next step says it a bit clearer, "includes 50% off your connected Watch plan OR Data SIM Plan fees for 12 months."

        • I tried applying for it through the app and also spoke also with the Optus rep. You’re required to sign up with a device in order to get this deal. Maybe i spoke with the wrong rep :)

          • @AutumnSnow: Optus rep I spoke too was willing too do this extra small data deal on its own, read my below post too what they told me, cheers πŸ‘

            • @Italkdigital: Ok thanks. I will try taking to a different rep hopefully he would allow me to do the same.

              • +1

@AutumnSnow: How did you go?, I know Optus reps can be a pain when they have no idea of their own plans, problem with this deal it's through the app only if you don't want too talk too anyone, like one of my posts maybe sign up with prepaid ($1 starter pack) too have an account and then can use the app

                • @Italkdigital: Yeah, Optus reps are so useless, had issues trying to sign up for 3 month free, as corky mention above.
So I could not sign up for it.

  • +2

I got it last week for $15, chatting with customer service to see what can I get!

    • +2

I successfully got discounts on my previous plan to make it $7.5

      • Really so this is was your existing data plan they gave you a 50% discount on? Wondering how long have you had this data plan may I ask? And which data plan?

Wondering cause my extra small plan is tied too a Samsung A7 tablet deal, why they won't give it too me I'm guessing as I've certainly tried what you've done, actually yes they'll loose out cause I'm already getting the big discounts on the tablet, well they've notated in my account this 50% discount for future reference, so hopefully when my tablet repayments/deal finnishes in 2 months and not tied too my extra small data plan anymore, I can negotiate this 50% data deal on my existing extra small data plan, again hopefullyπŸ‘πŸ˜

        • +2

I have purchased Tab 7 for $5 per months and the small data sim for $15 last week.

I complained and they price match it with this current one. 😊

          • +2

@shahrah: Really wow good effort on your part, they wouldn't do it for me though my tablet deal only has 2 months left of repayments, I guess you went for the 36 months for $5 per month deal, these 4G tablets are worth over $500 selling at jbhifi so again great score πŸ‘πŸ˜

  • +1

you missed the option 2 point 2. data sim plan 50% off

  • +2

Those that have been considering porting there mobile plan too Optus can mix this 5gb data deal (best talk too Optus too confirm this, prefably over the phone and best during the day hopefully speak to an Ozzie person) as they don't advertise this long time offer,..
Deal posted here on Ozbargain as expired though I'm sure you just need too push the Optus agent about this deal, some have succeeded getting discount on just one service
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/508311

So important first make this 5gb data simcard 4G plan @ $7.50 your first plan

    Then,…
Long time offer with Optus they don't advertise is you get 25% off your second 4g simcard plan.. so pick one of there 4g mobile plans as your second plan,. all there mobile plans have unlimited calls/sms and other bonuses (no contracts for both plans)

    So either,..
    $45 20gb plan Γ— 25% discount = $11.25
    $55 80gb plan Γ— 25% discount = $13.75
    $65 200gb plan Γ— 25% discount = $16.25

So the 25% discount from second mobile plan pays the cost of all the first 5gb data plan with a little change left over

    Example choosing $55 mobile plan

    = $7.50 (5gb) + $55 (80gb) - $13.75 (discount)
    = $48.75
    Using Optus sharing data 5gb + 80gb
    = for 85gb shared costs $48.75

And you can use your first data 4g simcard at home like I do too provide internet too ones PC or like me my Fetch Mighty box of course I don't have the NBN to save more and I'm on a higher plan, 1x video stream runs ok at 1.5Mbps

    $65 plan,..
    = $7.50 (5gb) + $65 (200gb) - $16.25 (discount)
    = $56.25
    Using Optus sharing data 5gb + 80gb
    = for 205gb shared costs $56.25

    Enjoy,.. πŸ‘πŸ˜

    • +1

      Wouldn't this be:
      $45 20gb plan Γ— 25% discount = $33.75 instead of $11.25 ?

      • The 25% discount on $45 is $11.25

        • +1

Oh, yeah, got it, you meant the discount :)

      • everyone be jumping if it was $11.25 for unlimited calls, text and 20GB data per month.

  • +1

Pointless offers I only $4.95 for 40gb per month or $9.90 for 80gb per month, all these Telstra, Optus, voda main stream deals are a Ripp off

    • Depends what your using it for,. my situation I need two simcards one at home too provide internet too my Fetch Mighty box as it won't work without an internet connection, yes you can chase better deals changing mobile providers all the time but some people couldn't be bothered, anyway my Optus Mobile an has other perks like calling too other countries free unlimited and so.e are chasing the free Optus sport thingy too

Though do post your mobile provider and link too both your deals you mentioned, I'd love too know more about them πŸ‘πŸ˜

    • +5

What plans are $4.95 for 40gb per month or $9.90 for 80gb per month?

      • -1

Hopefully we will find out soon,…one also has to consider too with Telstra, Optus and Vodafone after allocated data has been used up they stay unlimited data at a slower speed, with Optus and Telstra it's 1.5 Mbps and Vodafone from 2Mbos upwards upto too 10Mbps depending which data plan you choose and I think all have 5g access

One other MVNO provider I know of associated with Vodafone, Felix mobile with there only one mobile plan they offer has unlimited data at always set speed of 20Mbps, Yupz unlimited data
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/606418

Note: to those that don't know you can place a 4G "mobile" sim plan simcard in a wifi 4G/5g modem or in a 4g/5g mobile phone too wifi hotspot data (mobile phone too act as a wifi 4g/5g modem)

    • +2

Kogan does a 40g for $4.90 new customer introductory offer, but it's not fair to compare that to ongoing plans

  • +1

Newbie question. Is this plan including SMS and phone like normal, right?

    • Not for the 5gb data plan @ $7.50 posted by OP, but yes too my mention of the Optus mobile plans

      • +1

let me have a look again at your post. cheers

        • +1

          Optus mobile plans here,.
          https://www.optus.com.au/mobile/plans/shop

They all include 5g access, Optus Sports and health and Unlimited standard International Talk & Text from Australia to 35 selected destinations

Of course the whole point of my original post if you can get 25% discount on the second plan mobile plan (you need too talk too the right person with Optus agent as usual some are hopeless and have no idea)

          • +1

@Italkdigital: thanks. I am thinking to even reduce my monthly payment. Currently pay $50 with optus for data share with my wife.
I dont really use much internet, since WFH most of the times.
If you have any better deal, please let me know
            Cheers

            • @MurahMeriahOy: Yeah best advise follow Ozbargain for any Optus deals,.. I've really only stayed with Optus only cause of these type of deals,. so far with them for over 3 years,.. as persons post above his right as main stream plan pricing for Optus, Telstra and Vodafone is high and these deals depend on your circumstances

I guess you missed this Optus deal which I ordered 3x off though I download a lot so this probably wouldn't apply too you but yeah it was for free so why not so I'm enjoying 450gb free data per month lolz,..
              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/630126

            • @MurahMeriahOy: Looks like you can get 50% discount on your current existing data plan with Optus (saves you messing starting another plan and cancelling existing data plan) as long as it's not tied too any other deal like my data plan is too a tablet deal

  • +1

really really really dumb question, but "data" plans, do they include calls and texts?

    • +2

      No

    • +2

No only data no sms out, no calls in/out, saying that I have had past older plans with Telstra were you could sms out and call in but got charged 25 cents for smsing, also some data plans you could call too them as these data plans do have a mobile number allocated too them

but I've got this Optus 5gb data plan and you can not call in or out or smses out at all,..

one thing you can do is "sms in only" and "mms in/out only" but will be charged mmsing out, hoped that helped πŸ‘πŸ˜

Edit: "smsing in" helps if you like the mobile number allocated/attached too the data plan as these days when porting too another provider the mobile providers use "sms OTP in" to confirm your the owner of the simcard plan, you can port number from a data plan too a mobile plan, i've even successfully ported from one owner to another owner, too my name using OTP

  • +1

has anyone been able to get Optus 25% off Second Connection on this deal or a student email 10% off on top of this ?

  • I've currently got this 5gb plan for over 3 years now paying $15 a month,. gonna see if Optus will let me take this deal and reduce my current 5gb data plan from $15 too $7.50

  • +1

if anyone with a edu email wants to try to see if 10% off emailed code works during check out please report back here . ref https://offer.optus.com.au/studenthub

    • I'm two months away from becoming an official student if that helps, will certainly test it out though you have too use student discount when applying for a new plan not existing plan with Optus

  • +1

Is this plan available as an esim?

    • Has been usually as it's a post paid plan or could be restrictions cause of low pricing of plan, anyone know for sure?

Edit: I'd lean towards more so "yes" since this 5gb data plan is offered also with tablets and watches which some of these devices can only support e-Sim anyway, couldn't find anything in T&Cs probably best chat with Optus

      • +1

As it’s a data sim only (no calls or sms) it’s unable to be done as an eSIM.
I have an iPad on a data plan and I asked countless times to go to eSIM (to have as a data backup on my iPhone) however unable to as it’s a data sim.
