these make great endpoints for LMS, Spotify, Airplay, or whatever else takes your fancy too.

    • Hi @diamond, do you have a guide on useing a Pi zero with Spotify? All the guides I have read recommend a Pi 2, 3 or 4.

      • software should be exactly the same, and once you solder the header pins on, the hardware instructions should be more or less the same too.

you'll need a DAC hat in addition to the pi.

software-wise moode audio is probably the easiest to setup as a Spotify connect device on your network, but I prefer using picoreplayer with LMS.

  • Can the Pi Zero be used for AdGuard Home?

Also, does anyone have suggestions on cheap but good case for the Pi Zero?

    Thanks.

    • Pi-hole does the job but does not block everything as I hear. Core Electronics sells cases but I have ordered from AliExpress. Cheap and heaps of choices.

Pihole can't block ads if they are served from the same domain as the content, so it depends on how the ad is served. A good example of it is youtube. It is a hit and miss for my LG Smart TV.

Indian YouTube premium got that covered, thanks to OzB

      • Pi-Hole does a great job skimming the top off trash ads on websites. As per previous comment, ads served from the domain of the current website or from the monolith ads.google etc will not be blocked unless you can avoid all of googles services. It also helped me discover a virus on my father's phone. Still a very handy Pi project.

Works for piHole. I had a non W with an Ethernet PiHat running fine.

      • Which Ethernet PiHat's can be used for the Pi Zero/Zero W?
And are there cases available to house the Pi with the Ethernet PiHat?

        • I have an original 1B, a 3B, a 4B and 2 x Zeros all powered from external POE/USB adapters. I’ve never used a POEhat and never had any power issues.

  • Thinking about a ghetto plex streamer with 2TB USB attached - anyone tried it?

    • You still cant watch a youtube video on a pi 4 without some frames being dropped, I can't imagine a plex server on a Zero

      • Cheers - will pony up

      • How odd, Pi3 with h264ify does it just fine in HD. (did it all last night, as I do every night, it's my HTPC)

        • Maybe I’m wrong Ive never tried running plex on it. But a cheap Nuc or a Pi 4 will do much better especially if you connect it via Ethernet

          • @[Deactivated]: What program do you use for youtube? I recommend VLC Player. Ensures hardware acceleration, and skips any sort of advertising.

        • -1

Sounds like you need a HTPC upgrade. Any 10 year old i7 should be an improvement.

          • @[Deactivated]: Not at all.
It plays all my media without issues, and nothing I've found can match the sub 10W power usage.

      • really? On what software? How many fps?

my Pi4 streams HEVC 4k at 24p on Kodi no problems at all.

        • Its just cause of chromium, VLC is fine, h264ify does improve it, but it still struggles sometimes.

          • @[Deactivated]: apples and oranges then.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Oh Chromium; yeah, Chrome doesn't do hardware acceleration on Linux, you'll need to use Firefox for vapi support.

That said, I run youtube through VLC player, so I've never had issues (or ads).

    • I have been running a Plex Server on a 4 GB Pi 4 with a 12 TB USB attached for quite a while now. Works really well.
Supports 2-3 parallel streams without hiccup as well.

Pi Zero - Might not work well

    • no, way too ghetto.

    • For a single stream (maybe 2) and no transcoding, it should work wonders :)

Though, Kodi and a basic NFS file-share is probably lighter again.

Tried to purchase but is sold out

  • Definitely a neat thing….. I got one from Core ages ago. It's still "Limit of one per customer (as requested by the Raspberry Pi Foundation)", so does anyone know if Core Electronics follow that to the letter and only allow one ever per customer, or do they limit that to one per order…..

    • +1

I buy one every 9 months or so and they haven't rejected my orders

      • Sweet. I need to think about what I might use another for then!

      • +2

        every 9 months

Is that how long they take to gestate?

    "Available with a lead time

  • It's great for building a travel router, but out of stock.

  • +1

good for pihole but get a micro usb to ethernet adapter though

    • What if it's connected to home wifi? This one is wireless.

    • +1

Meh… a wifi DNS lookup isn't slowing anything down. It doesn't do it for every packet.

Source been using one of these with pi-hole for ages and I haven't noticed any perceptible difference.

  • They are powerful enough to run Domoticz for home automation. I was doing this until I lost my setup due to SD card corruption. Now have two not doing anything. May put to use again one day.

  • Well it's out of stock, but wonder for pihole will that be good enough using wifi? Or need ethernet to make it reliable for dns resolution?

    • +1

Wifi will be fine for it.

    • +1

      Wifi will work fine.
In the mean time, you can run a tiny VirtualBox on your system, and run PiHole there :)
Point your router to the VM's IP like normal :)

      • Good idea, will give it a shot to familiar with it

  • +1

Works well with DietPi for pihole

  • Anyone know if these will run home assistant? Or is it worth getting something beefier

    • +1

      You'll want beefier.

"Install Home Assistant Operating System" says under suggested hardware: "Raspberry Pi 4 (Raspberry Pi 3 is ok too, if you have one laying around)"

I think I've tried and I think I remember it being dreadfully slow.

    • +1

      Like all scalable solutions;
if you intend to run a hotel, probably a bad idea.
If you intend to run 4 doors, probably fine.

    • +2

Couldn't imagine anything worse than running my smart home on an under powered and wifi only device. Use an old laptop from gum tree for $40. It'll do wonders. And you'll never hit a ceiling when looking at adons.

      • +1

For low power consumption the pi zero W is good. Fine with Domoticz. Home Assistant is a resource hog and ran really slowly when I tried. But it did run.

    • No. New versions of Home Assistant are incompatible with the Pi Zero

  • +2

I just installed latest release of Home Assistant OS Release-6 build 1 on a Pi Zero. It's slow, but runs ok once booted.
Good enough for testing, but will order a Pi4 variant for longer term usage.
