300 nits but still 45% NTSC fyi

    • I don’t understand how much they are saving by doing this.

Must be some sort of dumping in china

      • Must be some sort of dumping in china

        What do you mean?

  • When is it shipped?

  • What’s the diff between Gen 2 and Gen 3? Bought the Gen 2 Ryzen 7 Version during eofy , but has yet to be shipped out.

    • Hmm this one has half the ram and hdd, plus ryzen 5 rather than 7. Seems to be worse.

      • +3

        Thanks. No fingerprint reader too.

I checked to upgrade to Ryzen 7, 24GB Ram, fingerprint reader, 512GB SSD, total price is $1339.31 with TA’s discount code (without Cashrewards)

      • which gen of Ryzen though?

    • From reading, not a huge difference. Both are on 7nm, but the Zen 3 has some architecture changes that improve memory latency. It's meant to be a complete refresh in design, but from benchmarks not the strongest reason to reject a CPU if the rest of the pre-built machine is good.

The 5500u is a Zen 2 and a very powerful CPU.

Personally I was very happy to buy a prebuilt 5700u (prebuilt Asus PN51) despite it being Zen2. It's amazingly fast. When I build my own PC then I'll likely use the latest Zen 3 (or 4) depending on when I get around to it.

    • I'm waiting the Ryzen 7 as well. Probably won't change.
E14 Gen3 still use HDMI 1.4b if it matters to you.

  • I missed the deal from Shopping Express https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/638006

    This deal is comparable?

    • +1

No. the L14 is quite a bit better.

  • Is this much better in terms of build than the ideapad 3? Can customise and get 300 nit screen here but the ideapad is much cheaper at 20% off on eBay

    • +3

Ideapad is consumer class, Thinkpad E series is entry level business class

A good deal for something more sturdy than the Ideapad series

      • Thanks

      • Really I think of e series as lowest consumer grade.

The idea pads are super light and thin.

        • Hence ThinkPad E 'more sturdy'.

  • +6

nice, finally a Lenovo I can recommend

good panel, and backlit keyboard in an E model, along with a good Ryzen chip

    • +6

… Great move. Well done Angus.

  • +3

Got this 2 days ago. Love it …I think a better deal though cpu not as fast as the ryzen but still flies.. I don't even game or do anything high end and like 15" screen and …was same day pick up at JB!

    • Battery life?

      • Dunno gl, as generally have it plugged in but should be good as latest Intel chip. Smaller PSU too which is cool. No brick . Just chucky at the wall end

    • +2

The Ideapad Slim is a consumer grade laptop. Thinkpad E series is entry level business grade.

Benefits of this Thinpad E series

      *Faster CPU in multi-threaded workloads

AMD Ryzen R5 5500U (Hexacore) vs Intel Core i5-1135G7 (Quadcore)

AMD Ryzen 5500U scores 13565 overall
Intel Core i5-1135G7 scores 10033 overall

*8GB of RAM is soldered, but you can upgrade to another 16GB SODIMM(24GB total) vs just soldered option on the the Ideapad

*Chassis top and bottom is aluminum vs just the display cover being aluminum and the rest plastic on the Ideapad

*Battery life is up to 12.8hrs on the ThinkPad vs up to 11hrs on the Ideapad, because the Ryzen R5 5500u consumes less power then the 11th gen i5.

*Dedicated Ethernet port for those that require it in a business environment. No need for a dongle.

The only benefit I see for the Ideapad deal at it's price-point:

1.16GB soldered RAM(Upgrade option on the ThinkPad)
      2. AX WiFi (Upgrade option on the ThinkPad)

  • +2

ThinkPads are back on the menu?

  • Before ordering, best to check the ETA to ship. I got the last lenovo deal and been told 6-8weeks wait

    • +4

I have confirmation from Lenovo that shipping time is around two weeks, as mentioned in the OP. Thanks.

  • +1

Its been awhile TA… Finally the Gen 3 is out!

  • +3

FYI the CPU part of the Ryzen 5 5500U is the same as the Ryzen 5 4600U, same architecture, same clocks, same cores and threads, same amount of cache. It does, however, have one extra GPU core enabled, 7 vs 6 (so slightly better).

  • +3

Can any tech-heads recommend upgrades to get this to $1500+ to take advantage of the Amex $200?

    • +3

I'd personally go for something with a better display if it'll be $1500+

      • +1

Great point. These Ryzens are so insanely powerful that it's better to pick one you're happy with the whole unit.

A good monitor and keyboard will make your life happier IMO. You can (usually) always upgrade the SSD later.

        • Figured as much. Placed an order for this but shipping date pushed out so far that Amex will be gone by then.

          The hunt continues!

          • @Tafe: Please post if you find it! Thanks

          • @Tafe: What is the difference between this offer and the offer in the link? For student, what's better? Also have Amex.

    • +1

      Buy a couple ;)

  • do a deal on 3050ti based ideapad gaming next!

  • good deal

    • +2

how? basically the same exact PC with double the ram and storage was $830ish after CR a month or 2 ago

  • I like that it is such an issue with Lenovo notepads that we now advertise the NITS level in the item headline.

    • It's not just a Lenovo thing, most laptops under $1000 still have absolute crap screens

      • True, but if you go back through a lot of the Lenovo deals posted, you regularly see X NITS, Ugh no way.

    • I wonder if I contributed to the trend

all my deals are with 300 nit good panels, and I always rant about color space coverage

Lenovo has been playing dirty for a while now, putting crap pabels in half decent laptops

so I hope things are going to be better from here onwards

  • If this is anything like the E-Series I've handled in the past then "MIL-SPEC" is a pretty big reach. That being said every Ryzen thinkpad I've handled so far has been very smooth so this might be decent.

    • MIL-SPEC just means "cheapest possible way to get it done with the cheapest possible material while still meeting bare minimum environmental requirements" - applies to most military contract evaluations around the world

    • +1

i got the E14 gen 2 and that shit is solid af

  • With everything under about $1500 now having at least 1 soldered RAM, I guess no one is really concerned about tossing a whole laptop/ultrabook when the RAM goes bad?

    • +1

Correct .. we're not concerned … due to (a) never had RAM go bad and (b) it has a warranty.

      • Yeah I've only had 2 RAM sticks go bad in about 25 years but warranty is short at 1 year standard

        • I only spend about $1K .. then I can justify an upgrade every 1 or 2 years …

but yeaahh .. those dudes that spend $2K+ miss out on the fun of regular upgrades.

      • Same never had that issue with dozens of PCs and the jbhiti deal is better with 512 SSD and 16g ram available immediately! I posted above

        • My sister doesn't want Lenovo, I saw that one a few days ago. Probably end up with something from Dell outlet but yeah just about everything for 2021 has at least one soldered RAM. Also trying to get something with a decent screen (100% sRGB 300nits) is impossible under $1500 even with the sales.

    • All components can fail, but RAM has very low failure rates. A quick Google search will turn up plenty of tech professionals who have come across few or no RAM failures in their entire careers. In the rare event that it did fail, you could replace the motherboard; not as simple as swapping in a new RAM stick but the option would be there.

The bigger issue in relation to soldered RAM is upgradeability: i.e. when you get a machine that lacks a free slot at all. This one does have a free slot.

  • +2

Stack with Amex offers $200 off $1499 from Lenovo if you cross the spend threshold with upgrades

  • +1

jesus this is quite a shit deal compared to the gen 2 for $750

    • -3

i wouldn't buy the older gen for $100 (unless just to resell on ebay).

      • +3

I mean that's your choice but it's basically the exact same laptop with double the ram and storage

        • +3

Yeah dunno how this deal is getting so many upvotes tbh

      • I mean I got the 15in model i.e. E15 Gen 2 off GraysOnline over the weekend for $730 (thats incl their friggin 20% buyers premium) as Lenovo were offloading a few refurbed laptops and its not a bad piece of kit.

Mine had no visible marks on it and still had a full 12 months warranty and is running an i5-1135G7 with 8GB RAM (one stick but im swapping that out for 1 x 16gb stick) and a 512GB SSD; also has a fingerprint reader and a Thunderbolt port, both of which are rare for the price I paid for it.

    • Do you have a link to that deal?

      • it was EOFY

        • Oh :( I need a laptop for WFH with similar specs to this one. Any suggestions?

  • Wish I had ordered when it was 13% off but still a good deal, got tired of waiting as I planned to stack with the Amex deal

  • +1

slightly off topic, but I heard Steve Smith promote cashrewards today on radio. And also on the telly the other day!

    Nice work cashrewards team :)

  • +3

    purchased, thanks TA.

Hope it's ETA as described, not like the one I cancelled earlier (ETA 4-5 months)

  • "USB-C 3.2 Gen 1"
    2021 and no Gen 2?
    - then no buy

  • Awsome price for Gen 3, thanks TA!

  • For coding, VM, and media consumption would this deal be better or Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 Pro Gen 6 14" (Ryzen 5 5600U, Nvidia MX450, 2.2k IPS, 16GB RAM, 512GB)? less than 100$ difference on the student store.

    • The Slim is a better deal. The 5600U is a newer and faster processor, based on Zen 3 architecture, vs the 5500U, which is Zen 2 based. The screen is also better with the 2.2k, 300 nits display and better colour gamut for media consumption. The MX450 would also assist with gaming and media consumption.

      • does cashrewards work on th education store?

        • Unfortunately it's hit and miss

          • +1

@shellshocked: Cashback is not available via the Lenovo education store…

Purchases made through Lenovo's student store, staff discounts, corporate deals, and negotiated offers (phone/email/chat) are ineligible for cashback.

            • @tightarse: Lenovo is really easy on their cashback, I had an order via education store that was cancelled and cashback was still approved

              • @ln28909: Appears you got extremely lucky.

                • @tightarse: Wasn't a one purchase thing either, multiple orders from multiple people also got approved and the amount of cashback was in the thousands too

    • -1

IdeaPad is consumer grade rubbish. Expect quality issues, inferior keyboard/touchpad, lots of deck flex. No thanks.

      • Your confusing the regular Ideapad with the Slim Pro and S540. They are total different in terms of build quality. I have the Ideapad S540 and it completely different to the regular version.

Regular Ideapad is plastic build, with 1080p screen and 45% NTSC colour gamut.

S540, and Slim PRO 14 and 16 are full aluminum build. They also have 2.2k or QHD screens with 72% NTSC colour gamut. Battery is either a 56wh or 75wh, vs the 38wh in Australia.

  • +1

    its just okkkkkkkkkkkkk

  • Can't decide between this deal or an IdeaPad 5 Pro. Any thoughts, tips, advice gratefully received.

    • +1

The PRO is not a regular Ideapad as mentioned above and in my deal posts. Vs this deal the PRO is

      Better build quality
      Better CPU with Zen 3
Better screen 2.2k, QHD 60hz ,or QHD 120hz with 72% NTSC gamut
      dGPU option with mx450, 1650 or 3050
      Bigger battery 56wh or 75wh

      • and take much longer to deliver

        • Well lets see because it depends on the number of orders and part availability. I have seen times blow out, because unfortunately some individual components were not available in China.

  • Just bought one. I've been looking for a decent/well priced laptop for a while but kept putting it off but with this discount code I just had to have a look. I managed to save $445 after upgrading CPU, Ram, SSD and webcam. Just wish there was an option for the 57wh battery :( ah well too late! Still happy though! Only thing that sucks is the 4 week estimated shipping time but i understand they gotta put the pieces i picked together.

    This deal seems heaps better.
    8 weeks wait though…

    • I ordered 2 weeks ago and my order is now expected to be shipped out in December. They can’t confirm 8 weeks anymore.

      • I just checked and you are correct
        Can we still cancel it?

  • This deal looks great but what modifications recommendations are there so I can get the price to at least $1499 to qualify for the Amex offer?

    Fyi, student here.
