Sounds like a no brainer deal really. Can't go wrong with spending just a few bucks (in currency exchange) zero bucks giving you a plan lasting over several years
Update: I paid A$109 for a 3 year plan and ShopBack initially tracked A$103.65 as the cashback (but we are told it will be updated to $109 i.e. 100% cashback as confirmed by the store rep in the comments.

              you can deactivate your account

              • @gimli: oh, im guessing you deactivated yours because too much spam? Hahahaha

    • -1

      You're just a negger

  • Just a bit cautious, DONTS: cashback is not payable on purchases through Private Internet Access App.

They mean the PIA app right not the Shopback App?

    • +1

Yup, sounds like it wouldn't cover any in-app purchases made within PIA app, which makes sense.

      • but how does that even work if it is the case? You are purchasing directly from PIA so shopback isn't there

        • +2

As in after you make the initial VPN purchase if you were to make any further in-app purchases within PIA app it won't cover that: it's fairly straightforward mate, don't complicate it for you and others. Just follow the link and pay for the plan of your choice following the instructions on ShopBack page. Cheers.

  • What's the take on dedicated IP address … is that part of cashback

    • +5

I'll doubt it mate. Normally these cashbacks only cover the VPN plan and not the add-ons.

    • Dedicated IP was included when I got PureVPN cashback months ago (but I can't recommend PureVPN).

  • Does PIA have access to China network? I remember it did for a while but no sure anymore since I've been using Nord for a while. I would assume so that it is owned by Cyberghost now.

  • +1

How long did it take for the cashback to be detected in your account? Just signed up

    • +5

Around a couple of hours mate. Also, it doesn't track you can cancel your plan for a refund within 30 days with PIA.

  • It seems like a no-brainer if you accept that PIA is a good VPN provider. For myself, PIA was awful and only switching to SurfShark fixed things for me. YMMV

    • How did you determine whether it was bad?

  • VPN deals keep rolling in. I have the nordvpn and cyberghost deal. How does this compare…

  • +1

I used PIA for a while and although it was a good VPN in most respects, it never worked for changing netflix regions or accessing UK services including BBC iPlayer. I switched to Surfshark which works much better.

    • This is probably a stupid question. No way i can cast to TV using VPN on mobile yea? Tried this with PIA in the past. Thanks.

      • Unfortunately don't think it is possible to cast when on vpn

        • +1

I think it's possible but it requires having the VPN added to your router/wifi it's beyond my technical know how but I looked into it a while back. You can get lots of info in Whirlpool forums if you ask questions there (seems to have a lot of IT people)

          • @Clarky77: You are correct. For casting to work, both devices need to be in the same network. So, if you configure the VPN directly on your router, the casting will work.

            • @h2g2: Any clue how to configure vpn on router? Thanks

              • +1

@Bargain-er: That comes down to your Router brand and capabilities. Best Google "PIA VPN your router model"
NordVPN is better (I found) as they have VPN client connection capability (again on capable routers). This makes it easier to turn on/off and quickly change preferred locations.

              • @Bargain-er: Would this work directly on TV,? Planning to use it with Kodi. Anyone using this or any other VPN service which works directly on TV can help please?

  • I've been waiting over a month for Shopback to investigate my denied referral cashback. Legitimate referral, denied without explanation after all steps were complete.

There is no way I'm risking $110 until this is resolved.

    • +3

I want the ACCC to investigate on ShopBack. They have always been making excuses so once a body gets involved Shopback should take it more seriously

    • Hey Spun, could you send me a DM with your account info so I can check it out?
      Thanks.

      • Thanks gotyourback. DM sent.

        • so wht happened? did it get fixed or nah?

  • +1

Knowing them they'll reject this lol

  • What's the best way to pay to avoid tracking issues? Card or Paypal?

    • Minimise use with the bad apple ones .
Only use them if you are happy with the price prior to cash back .

    • +3

Here are the standard rules we ask users to follow to allow for the best tracking:

      • Ensure the last link you clicked was our ShopBack one
      • Don't use any VPNs or any Adblockers while shopping as it will cause issues with tracking your purchase
      • Don't apply any un-approved discount codes
      • Don't pay with gift cards
      • Any officially accepted payment methods will work fine

If any issues arise, just send me a DM so I can sort it out.

      Cheers!

      • -2

Don't use any VPN or buy VPN?

        • Read pls.

(Posted already to a comment but I wanted to emphasise)

    • Hey mate,
If there is some sort of missing cashback/tracking issue, you can always send me a DM to take a look.

      Cheers.

      • I think the damage has been done mate. A lot of us have given up with Shop back altogether.

If it was an isolated case, all good but there have been too many instances and bullshit emails for us to bother anymore.

    • +2

Id be interested to see if there was any scope of a class action against ShopBack :)

  • I mainly use a VPN to watch Netflix Japan, will this work?

  • Looking for a VPN service, mainly concerned about getting fast speeds while streaming (Netflix, Prime Video). Which VPN would you recommend? Saw cashback deals on both Nord and SurfShark as well.

  • +19

NOTE that there have been users who bought PIA via Shopback in the past who have had their cashback's denied by Shopback because They turned Auto Renew OFF, with PIA saying they cancelled their service, and if you cancel their service not eligible for cashback.
That is a scam, because Cancelling is about buying a service then refunding, not turning off auto renewal

    • +4

Yeah, and it doesn't even say anything about that in the T&Cs. It's really unfair practice. Escalate to ACCC. I think guys from ozbargain, keep your records and documentations of all past issues in the event of the ACCC needing evidence, we would have an ample amount.

    • +1

So if I leave auto renew turned on, I'll get my cash back? I can then turn off auto renew? If it's not renewing in 3 years I can just set a reminder town the track I guess.

I mean it's still pretty shitty of them to decline cashback but this seems like a workaround.

      • +4

Yeah, wait until you get paid by shopback, then turn auto renew off, OR if you have zip pay, generate a single use virtual credit card number and use that to pay, then you don't need to turn auto renew off, as the card is only single use

        • Cool thanks!

        • +2

hmm… I turned the auto renewal off before and then turn on after ready this post. Will I be qualified with the tracked cashback?

    • +1

Goddamn. No wonder my Shopback hasn't tracked. I've been waiting for 3 hours now. Wish this info was available before I turned off auto renew. Thank you for sharing this.

    • where do i see this auto renew setting? Or do i need to turn on autorenew before purchasing?

  • Just purchased with the Shopback app, let's see if it will track…

How long is it meant to take?

    • +1

Give it up to 48 hours max to be reflected in your account.
It usually comes through within a few hours though.

      • I got it, thanks!

      • Hi @gotyourback,

Can you please clarify if cancelling auto-renew cancels the cashback? Some users are reporting this.

        • Hey rake,
          User: bobvegas suggested this earlier.
I would say this is the way to go. Set a reminder on your phone to turn off the renewal once the cashback is Confirmed.
Just to stay on the safe side.

          • @gotyourback: Thanks for the tip, I have read it all after I had turned the auto renewal off.

Can I switch it back on now to ensure Cashback?

            • +1

@rake: Switch it back on for now & turn it off after cashback is approved.
Reach out to me if you have any issues :)

  • Thanks OP. Bought and tracked in an hour. $109/3 yrs . Tracked amt $103.58. Just received cashback tracked email.

    • +2

Hey, glad you got tracking already :)
We're fixing the lower cashback rate as we speak.
Once our system re-syncs tomorrow morning, the cashback rate will reflect the $109 as intended.
Let me know if it doesn't :)

      • +1

        Gr8. will report back. thx

      • +1

Can confirm that cashback tracked amount is now showing up as $109.04. thx again.

  • Mine tracked to $103 as well, took about 2 hours.
I was a PIA VPN existing user up until 3 months ago when my sub expired. I used my work email when signing up this time, got the full cashback.

  • Just want to make sure as I don't want to be hit with currency exchange fees on my CC - do they bill in AUD?

    • Yes they do :)

  • I couldn't find the 3 year option. max was 2 years. Got the email. Paid 98 vs 93 cashback for 2 yr sub

      • Amazing. So I paid $109 for the 3 year and it tracked 103.58, will that change to $109 tomorrow?

        • +1

Correct! I apologize for that little delay :)

          • +1

@gotyourback: No need to apologise. This is great. The OP needs to update the post then.

            • +2

@archieduh: I don't know if OP is still monitoring this space, but in case he isn't would you be able to send him a DM?
As a store account, I can't initiate DMs with users who have not contacted us prior.
              Cheers!

I'm surprised to hear all these negative comments about SB. Are you guys using the app? A long time ago I had an issue when I used the browser on my phone but since the app has had its own browser built in I've never had any issues. I was always told to delete/clear cookies when using browser as well before the app added built in browser.
I've had way more issues with Cash Rewards but even then I've always had the issues resolved eventually.

  • +1

Is it worth risking $109 and not get tracked or a rejected cashback….. hmmm

  • Bought. Tracked in 1hr 20min.

    • Whats the cashback timeframe?

      • Hey mate, as mentioned earlier: it can take up to 48 hours, but will usually comes through within a few hours.

        Edit
It didn't click that you were referring to the wait time, my bad.
Cashback will be Approved in 75 Days.

        Cheers!

        • When will the cashback go to pending from tracked state? As in when does the vendor aka PIA VPN confirm the tracked cashback to go from tracked to pending state?

          • @archieduh: Hey mate, all the information is provided on the merchant page.
It takes 75 days for PIA to approve the cashback, and we will update that in your account within a few minutes of receiving an "Approved" status from them.
It will differ from store to store. Some have 60 days waiting periods, some have 120.
Best to check the page if unsure :)

10 Oct 2021 for me. Good enough.

  • How does this compare to surfshark?

  • i still dont mind using shopback

but they did a great job sweeping their breach shenaningans under the rug

  • Is there deals with more than 100% cashbacks? I mean this is all soo ridiculous lol

  • Purchased now to wait and see the cashback track.

    • +1

Tracked. 10th of October. Then I cancel the auto-renew.

  • Feels a bit too good to be true. 1 year cashback, sure, you've got people renewing at full price after. But 3 years is a long time to hope they'll stick around long enough after to recuperate.

Anybody suggest a believable business model here? Robinhood's?

    • Had NordVPN free for 3 years as well. Just remember to cancel. A 3-year calendar entry is all it takes.

    • +1

business model is most likely people’s data. Browsing history with good user identity from payment info and residential ip. Data brokers pay good dollar and resell to adtech

      • Yeah, not sounding too private. Have been with PIA for about 8 years, finally didn't renew this year as it was quite expensive for my little use, and dream machine routers are a pain to configure for it.

But it concerns me it's effectively free now.

  • +1

New customer here. Bought it and tracked within 1 hr and 10 mins.

  • Does PIA support SOCKS5 proxy connections?

  • Newbie query. We are thinking of using overseas subscription services being Indian TV channels. we can subscribe to them in rupees (to make it cheaper) and plan to use it here in Aus. Is it safe to assume with this PIA, we could utilize that, how could you know if they have vpn server in India to facil our needs. Also, how does this work, once i subscribe and download this app, what do we do next?

    • Hit and miss usually (don't have experience with Indian apps). For any service it depends. Like bbc iPlayer used to work on some vpns but doesn't now.
U can always take a trial and see if it works.
And in this case with cashback it's effectively free anyways.
I don't have any need for vpn but just keeping it for future unknown use.

Also you can post in the forum to start such discussions.

      • BBC iPlayer works fine with Nord. I use all the time.

      • Thanks for explaining. How does this work in practice after we download the app. We have NBN at home, does it automatically converts our internet connection to VPN if we use this app and then run the oversease subscription on that internet?

  • -1

Really awesome deal. However, won’t be considering it because it would require using ShopBack.

  • Just bought, will update when cashback received. Recorded it just in case anything goes wrong :)
