      • indeed it is fine for the price

but my other machine is a super fast gaming laptop so I can't help noticing the difference in performance switching between the two

        • Haha … agree :)

  • +1

    I have 2 chromebook already…. but for this price… I dont mind to get the 3rd one….

  • +1

Bought it for $300 on prime day :(

Super good deal at this price. Much better than I expected. I also bought a $8 USB HDMI capture dongle from eBay, and use the duet as a portable monitor.

    • How does the USB HDMI capture thing work?

Does it let any laptop be used as a second monitor?

      • laptop as second monitor .. or … duet as second monitor?

        • Duet as monitor

I use it as a monitor for configuring my CCTV system. Used to move my bigger monitor from my working desk for that. So much easier with the duet.

        • Would be great if it worked for both laptops and duets

eg connecting my laptop screen to the Windows desktop at work as a second screen

Doesnt appear it will work though

      • It doesn’t require driver with win/Mac/chrome os, detected as an external camera. In chromebook, you could use the built in camera app or 3rd party to display the hdmi content

      • Generally, they show the HDMI over USB as another camera source, although not sure if the cheap ones can do 60Hz I guess it would probably be at a lower frame rate like 25-30Hz - I have one and tried using it this way to check on a raspberry pi - it seemed quite laggy from memory (probably as I was using the WIndows camera app), but allowed me to do what I needed to do (a few minutes to check on something)
They usually are USB-A for the cheap ones.

        • +1

No visible lag in my case, but I am not using it to play video games though

    • I also bought a $8 USB HDMI capture dongle from eBay

      Link?

  • Do Chromebooks have any extra functionality or apps over a normal Android tablet or phone?

    • +1

Android tablet .. trying to use mobile browsers in desktop mode never works perfectly .. not bad but there is always a few glitchy websites that dont work first time in desktop mode.

Android tablet with 5G .. nice to use as your primary device with phone calls .. depending on movements for the day. I just switch the SIM over.

Chromebook .. full desktop browser with chrome extensions .. better for Citrix etc.

Chromebook … still get Android apps.

To keep it simple … the desktop Chrome on the Chromebook is the huge benefit.

This Duet is pretty much the same size as my Tab S6 and maybe tiny bit smaller than the Tab S7 .. ie super slim and light. I wasn't expecting that!

      • can this handle 60 tabs left open on chrome browser ?

        • +1

Yes, the tabs are there .. but it is a bit like any device … the number of tabs that are kept 'active' and stored in memory depend on the RAM.

Exceed the RAM limit, then it reloads with data and rendering of the tab.

          • @matt-ozb: my current 8gb ram win10 laptop … can't handle 200 chrome tabs , it crashes / force close every once a while

does chrome os ever crashes the chrome browser ?

            • +1

@dcep: Haven't tested with the Duet.

I used to have 100+ tabs on (a) ChromeOS on my Pixelbook and also with (b) Chrome browser on linux … and both was fine.

    • +2

An android tablet will generally run Android apps in a better way if that is your primary need.
Performance wise, Chrome OS runs Linux and Android apps in virtualised containers, so not as direct, complete or efficient.
From a security and IT support perspective, ChromeOS is miles ahead, and not really comparable to the update wasteland of android tablets at this price.
The full Chrome browser and UI run natively so are very fast and responsive - but if you are wanting the android app experience of e.g. Tab S6 or newer, then the Duet may not be right for you.

  • Thanks, bought one. I wonder if the new revision will be out soon considering this is about a year old, but for this price can't argue.

    • Dont think a new one is imminent … Asus just released the CM3 or CX3 (?) .. based on the same chipset.

  • +2

Didn't know I needed this till I saw 200+ positive votes on ozbargain.

Too good to pass up on that alone.

    Ordered.

On the upside it can run android apps. That was news to me

  • Never considered a Chromebook until I read through this deal, my finger is hovering over the button ;)

    I don't need it, but…..

    • +2

Amazing chance to try a Chromebook … dont hesitate :)

As the guy said above .. it is amazing just for a spare portable monitor! Lol

    • But… the herd mentality

  • Only issue I've found so far (that my 5 year old daughter complains about) is there is no option for virtual background for her when she's doing her school meetings via zoom. 🙄

    • +1

      Are you using:

      a) the zoom android app, or

      b) the zoom chrome extension

      have you tested both?

      • I have only been using the chrome extension.

I just installed "zoom PWA" now, hopefully that works?

        • Yes you need zoom app not the browser

          • @CyberMurning: Yeah "zoom PWA" app sort of works, but just has a circle cut out for your face, it doesn't fit around your profile properly 😂

I cannot find just the standard "zoom" app in the google store?

            • +2

@John Kimble: You can potentially sideload the Android app?

              Discussion on reddit

  • Pulled the trigger.

Bought it for kid home schooling

  • +4

Didn’t need, bought anyway. The ozbargain way.

  • Anyone got a link for a local seller for a screen protector for this?
A quick search on eBay revealed only overseas sellers

    • +2

It is $260 .. don't lose a bit of screen quality and sensitivity with a screen protector.

    • -1

Same, am devastated by the lack of screen protectors that doesn’t take a week to ship

  • +2

Officeworks price matched for $254.36. Happy

    • That sounds like a pricebeat, saved $13.39,……even better :-)

      • +1

Yap beat by 5%. That's my cashrewards!

  • If my local Officeworks doesn't have it in stock yet I can click and collect it on the 5th of August, will they still price match?

  • Price beat with no issue at OW Werribee. Got a nice little 10inch sleeve for it too on discount for $15 so it's locked in. Thanks op.

  • Hello does this have a play store? (Android).

In order to Install Netflix, WhatsApp, FB etc?

    • +1

Yes .. has Google Play Store android apps.

Not tested Netflex and Whatsapp .. but whatsapp needs a mobile number to register so that wont work properly .. you could whatschrome .. or something like that.

    • +2

Yes it does but I've found the web apps to be better for media streaming.

    • +1

Yes it does, but it also doesn't seem to have a limit of what can be installed that can actually run. I've had games install, but not run or work, due to some unknown reason.

      • android apps on chromebooks is not always perfect .. but getting pretty good and always improving … it is not necessarily a Duet issue.

  • Already have Lenovo Flex 5 and C340-11 but for the price……… 😉

    • +1

This is a bit faster than the C340 .. I have the C340 also.

This is worth buying to complement the Flex 5 as a tablet.

      • Cool, thanks for that was wondering. Yeah figured either I can sell the C340 which is my current "lounge" Chromebook or maybe just demote it and use it as a home automation display 🤔

        • +2

Hang on to it for now, as this tablet/keyboard combo is top heavy ( like all tablet/keyboard combos )

and not as balanced to use on a lap as compared to a laptop/hybrid. I have this and 11"/12" hybrids/360 similar to your C340

and mostly prefer those over the Duet, lighter too if using the duet with keyboard. Still a really nice unit with great screen,

and if your going to use it mainly as a tablet it's a no brainer at this price.

Can somebody please share the office works link

  • Bought! Now to find a decent compatible pen/stylus…

  • Extra 10 off with this deal, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/641726

  • Does it come with the stylus pen, or purchase separately? If purchase separately, which brand works best?

    • +2

No stylus … need USI compatible stylus .. about $59 at lenovo and forever to deliver … or $69 for a weird brand at JB .. check ebay.

      • +1

FWIW I have the Alogic one (also available cheaper on eBay) and it is a decent stylus. I have a Lenovo pen for my laptop and my understanding is the Lenovo USI pen isn't of great quality. Even assuming it's equivalent to my Lenovo Wacom EMR pen, the Alogic one is of better build.

        • Wow, almost pull the trigger if the it comes with the pen. The pen cost a fortune to buy.

          • +1

@htc: They are $44.25 (includes delivery) from the Lenovo student store…

            • @repeat: Cool, I will wait for the next bargain deal, this deal set the bar high, so will probably pull the trigger it the price is the same or below the advertised price in this deal.

            • @repeat: Do you have to register as a student to get that price?
Is this the one you are referring to? $59 without discount. https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/accessories-and-monitors/stylus…

              • +1

@htc: Yes that is the same one - you need to have an .ed.au email address (or someone you know/your family) to register with the lenovo student store

                • @repeat: Cool, so I assumed you got one of these. Does it use a AAA battery? Does it magnetically stick to the tablet like the surface pro?

                  • @htc: They come with an AAAA battery, so they are harder to find.
I mostly use the pen with my Chromebook Flex 5 (there doesn't seem to be a magnet on that one), but I just checked the Duet.
The pen seems to be magnetic - there may be better locations, it sort of holds above the kickstand hinge when it is being used (not very strongly though), or if you are using the tablet on its own there are magnets on the back for the stand that hold the pen ok either horizontally under the camera or horizontally near the bottom (when viewed from the back in portrait aspect).

  • +1

So tempting…..but I have no need…and lockdown means I'm not travelling anytime soon, so no requirement for a super light travel option.

    • +2

still a nice lounge tablet device.

    • +1

Really not that super light anyway compared to 11"-11.6" laptops/hybrids that you might already have.

      • +1

So 920g on amazon website, does that include the keyboard or is it lighter without the keyboard?

        • +1

That includes the keyboard. It's not heavy, but as it is smaller but thicker, it feels heavier to carry and handle

with keyboard compared to a thin and light 11-12" laptop/hybrid as you handle and carry it different with weight spread out,

especially in a laptop bag/sleeve with handles. No biggy though, just personal preference.

This duet is great to pack in a backpack or suitcase, even with the protective keyboard attatched.

      • +1

correct .. with the keyboard and cover.

Without the keyboard and cover it is about the same size& weight as my Galaxy Tab S6 and smaller than my Galaxy Tab S7.

  • +2

After much screwing round got it from office works Airport West they still had six or so left.

They didn't want to do it, saying they most likely couldn't, as you had to be a member to get deal of the days etc. She stuffed around a bit longer before realising you could.

    So finally all good.

Possibly a bit small for what I wanted but thought I'd give it a crack given the good reviews.

  • Any feedback on using this for Web app games like Roblox and Minecraft?

    • Roblox works great. Pretty good frame rates. Very usable.

This is using the Anrdoid app.

When you say 'web apps' what do you mean?

  • +1

I got this recently too, as I wanted an 'always' on dashboard or a way to view security cameras. But one annoying thing is that I cannot seem to control when it updates and restarts, so it's constantly restarting and useless for the task. I guess that's a limited usecase.

    • have you checked developer options? I'm not sure, but just an idea.

  • Don’t need it….got it anyway. Thanks OP 👍

  • there is no sd-card slot, and no heaphone jack, and crappy pen support.

    • The usi pen supports not good?

      • USI pen seems very good for most people .. try some googling.. responsive enough that people are happy.

      • It's ok-ish, kinda budgety.

    • Comes with a USB C headphone jack adapter.

      • so easy to loose this silly dongle and often slides out of the usb-c port

  • +2

Just remember the Android apps on this are average at best. Web apps perfect, but the Android ones are far inferior to iOS. Price of this however is excellent.

  • How is this device compare to Samsung Tablet A7 64 gb? I am in the market for a budget tablet, any comparison please?

    • This screen is a bit nicer with punchier colors for me. Just get which platform you prefer,

Android or Chromebook as that will be the biggest difference. Appart from not having headphone jack of course lol.

      • +1

Thank, was caught up at work. Now it is jacked up in price :(

    • +1

Duet is the same size and weight as my Galaxy Tab S6 .. and smaller and lighter than my Tab S7.

Duet is nicer to use as tablet .. the ChromeOS with android apps is better than Android tablet.

Performance of Duet is about the same as Tab S6 and Tab S7.

I have sold my Tab S7 and will sell my Tab S6.

You can translate the above for your A7 tablet .. ie the Duet should be faster.

      • Thank, was caught up at work. Now it is jacked up in price :(

  • What’s the useable lifespan for this as a potential school device?

    • +2

Has security updates until Jun 2028.
Battery will die before then though :)
No reason not to expect a few good years out of it.

  • +1

I think after reading this post, I will be in the market to buy one like that when a special on another similar product comes to the market, one comes with the pen.

    • +1

Good luck finding similar specs with included pen for similar to this price. Still hope you can find one though, then post it on here too lol.

      • Looks like the lenovo one is a very good deal, when I watched the video, it comes with the attachable keyboard, so like a budget/cheaper version of surface pro. Looks like this is the lowest price so far. Do you know if the cashreward/shopback 7% cashback include this item or only amazon brand item? Will I be able to stack it with 3% gift card from suncorp?

        • Too late now to split hairs.
