Officeworks have it for $768, price beat for 5% cheaper. Should bring it to $711.55.

Those who have salary sacrifice options at work can also win further by doing so and saving on the GST component.

    • +3

How does someone savea GST vis salary sacrifice?

      • +5

Your company is registered for GST, therefore they can claim GST back from the ATO. So if something cost $1,100 incl GST, technically it only cost the company $1,000 and you will only have to salary sacrifice $1,000 rather than $1,100

        • +1

Yup! So if you can SS it should bring it to $646.86

          • +4

@hypnOtixx: Brings to to about 400, considering a 37% tax rate. Double win.

            • @AH: Will it involve extra fee to SS to get tech equipments? Using services like smart salary.

              • @htc: I think the smart salary charge is around $75 but my company waives it on our behalf. I guess that's something check and account for.

            • @AH: you can't claim in one go though, can you since it's > $300.
Have to depreciate it over a number of years.. which is bit of a hassle

              • +1

@OzFrugie: It's salary packaging/sacrifice. Different from your usual work depreciation. I usually get rid of the device at the end of every fbt year.

                • @AH: ah I see. I didnt know about this, damn I have been missing out!

Why do you 'get rid of the device at the end of every fbt year'?

                  • +2

@OzFrugie: Usually get bored of it and buy a different model. There's no restrictions on how you dispose of the device.

    • How do we do arrange this with our employer if they do offer salary sacrifice?

      • Interested as well

        • +3

Ask your employer that you would like to salary sacrifice. The main benefit of salary sacrificing is not the GST component, but rather that the cost is taken out of your pre-tax salary instead of your post tax salary if you buy it normally

        • +1

I don't know how it works at your company, but with our employer, we would buy the item, then get the employer to reimburse the full amount. The accountant will then deduct the amount less GST from your pre-tax salary, hence you would save a further 30% or so, depending on your marginal tax rate

      • +7

Most employers offer it for iPhones, iPads and laptops as they are exempt from FBT provided that they’re used for work purposes more than 50% of the time.

So you just email your payroll person stating that you’d like to commence a salary sacrifice arrangement for an iPad that you’d partly use for work. It’s better if you buy it yourself (either with your work credit card or with your personal credit card and work reimburses you) rather than if work buys one for you because they’re likely to get something that costs more money.

Essentially work will pay for the iPad. Claim the GST from the ATO and you’ll pay back work each pay period from your pretax salary. How many paid periods depends on you/your job. So you can pay it in one go or over several weeks.

        • I am not 100% clear about this. Do you buy the item first yourself & you will get reimbursed in one go or over several pay period?
Or do you contact payroll to buy it for you and you will pay them back?

          This

It’s better if you buy it yourself (either with your work credit card or with your personal credit card and work reimburses you)

          contradicts with

Essentially work will pay for the iPad. Claim the GST from the ATO and you’ll pay back work each pay period from your pretax salary. How many paid periods depends on you/your job. So you can pay it in one go or over several weeks.

          ?

Is it only limited to mobile phones and laptops (exempt from FBT)?
How about things like monitors and docking station?

          • +1

@OzFrugie: You pay for the total value of the item eventually via salary sacrifice. But the first purchase must be from the company. For example:

            A. I buy the iPad using my personal credit card. I provide work with the tax invoice and then they reimburse me the full cost of the iPad (incl GST). Essentially work is paying for it and would own the iPad. Since I want to own it, and I’ll use it for business, I then salary sacrifice to work to buy it back. I can salary sacrifice whatever amount each pay period (per company policy). Alternatively,

            B. Work buys the iPad for you, through IT company or you purchasing it through company credit card, and then you repay work every pay period as per the above.

Does that make more sense now?

The legislation says that the below are exempt from FBT.
“Subject to the limitations below, the following work-related items are exempt from fringe benefits tax (FBT):

portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets, portable printers and GPS navigation receivers,
            computer software,
            protective clothing,
            briefcases,
            tools of trade.”

However, you can still deduct your monitor and dock etc that you use for both personal and work use when doing your taxes. You just won’t benefit from the GST savings as work isn’t buying them for you.

            • @Laurana: Thank you for the explanation!

Is there a scenario where doing salary sacrifice this way (via FBT) not beneficial vs claiming it under normal tax deduction during tax times?

              • +1

                @OzFrugie: No worries!

There really isn’t a scenario (tax wise) where you are worse off by doing it this way as long as it’s for FBT exempt items and you’re following the rules in the off chance you get audited (I.e don’t get two iPads in one year).

    • +5

What kind of shit (profanity) is that really though?
So much administrative time wasted for all sides involved.

      ATO, employees and employers.

      Bureaucratic nonsense at its finest.

      • Better than nothing. Even the US which don't have fringe benefits as powerful as this.

      • I really hate FBT, as does everyone that has had to deal with entertainment FBT, but this really isn’t that much of a hassle to manage. At least the legislation is clear about it.

A lot of people don’t take advantage of it anyways, or only do it once and payroll can manage it without having to chase people up for payment. Don’t see how this would affect the ATO any more than any tax deduction either. And you’re only going through the hassle because it saves you funds and you prefer salary sacrifice over tax deduction.

    • Does anyone know if Officeworks can price match for online sales? If so, how?

    • +1

Just did the price-beat at OfficeWorks, was easy as anything.

      • +1

        Was this in store?

        • +1

Yup, I checked over the phone before I went in but talked to someone else in store and no issues. Just needs to be Amazon AU, in-stock and I think free delivery which this one has.

They only had the Sky Blue so I went with that, it'll just be in a case. They also offered to order in the other colours at the same price.

          • @theknight27: Good one! In Sydney now so can’t do it in store. Their phone price match is not available til tomorrow :(

            • +1

@zzzman: Fingers crossed! I spoke to JB on the phone too but the best they could do was $740.

    • Just here to say thank you because my nearest OW actually beat it and I only paid this price!

    • I've always been informed that they (Officeworks) only price beat for 5% cheaper in 'price difference' not at the price they're selling it at. They've been doing that for years. It's as if there's a 'loophole' on their behalf - not the customer. So when u go in, they'll explain it to u. So you're not going to save by that much. eg; Officeworks price $768 : Amazon $749… Amazon $19 cheaper. So they'll take 5% the $19 difference. ie; 95c. So you're only saving 95c off the Amazon price. That's cheapskate stuff‼️

  • How low will these be likely to drop when new iPad is out?

    • +2

      Hmm

      • DOES THIS WORK WITH APPLE PENCIL 2 PLZ

        • +2

          Yes it does.

    • +1

      They

    • +1

We all know when we see it.

    • +1

      Hello

    • They don't refresh this one as often as the main series, it's a great ipad.

    • They're going to drop lower because of competing tablets in the <$500 range that have better feature sets.

If the next base model iPad is just the A14 in the current chassis, I think Apple are in a fight for a change.

If 120Hz OLED comes into that are as well, particularly if it offers BFI and HDR, Apple are looking a bit cooked without some changes to their tablet lineup.

You'll basically get most of the features of the iPad Pro sans the raw burst of the M1, which most people wouldn't notice.

These companies will also be in the position to just keep slapping SoC updates in each year, and area which Qualcomm and Samsung are going to start making serious leaps in, finally.

      • +1

Specs isn’t everything. I’m a software engineer cum ux designer and there absolutely zero alternatives that works seamlessly on the software side. Tried the tab 7+ and returned it after a day.

        • -1

Such is the life of a software engineer, not much works as seamlessly as the apple ecosystem….but you gotta cough up and pay.
Imagine having to pay $135 a year to be able to use all the features of the apple ecosystem in your app you've made and to be able to sign the app certificate for more than 7 days.

        • +1

Completely agree that Apple work hard to nail that, but to the tune of $250-$400 extra every purchase? Nope.

Honestly a better trade off of time and money to show people how to drill down a little bit on a stock OS install from the Android side of things.

But the single thread performance gap will close rapidly over the next 3-5 generations, Qualcomm are working hard on this, as are ARM.

    • I usually find out that they do by $70/$75. Or/and raise the price of the new model by $100. That's at the Apple Store.

    • Not by much

    • +1

      Will

I know Ozbargain hates Gerry but Harvey Norman currently has this for $768. Pick up some 7% gift cards through Shopback to get it for $714.24.

    • Don't know why but I havnt sucked that Bezosian #@%* yet. I've literally never signed up

    • Thanks. Just price matched with Harvey Norman and used the 7% discount gift card!

    • +10

Refuse to shop at Harvey Norman due to jobkeeper and their calls for wage cuts. Disgraceful.

    • Now that sounds a decent offer dealbot. As it makes sense as well.

  • Does anyone know what is the limit of how many Amazon gift cards we can use in one transaction purchase?

    • +1

Why do you have many $1gc? I've used multiple without a problem.

      • Ok thanks. Just wanted to check if there was any upper limit.

        • +3

Jusg add them before hand, it becomes a big credit balance.

    • +1

You can apply Amazon gc on your account before check out. So you can use as many as you have.

  • +2

      • +6

But only 64GB. Won't last long.

        • +2

Depends what you’re using it for.

          • @LlamaFace: How is it for artistic work? Is is easy to transfer/save on cloud or to PC storage?

            • +1

@capslock janitor: It's not too difficult to transfer files. What you might find is file formats may be/get a bit annoying if they're not standard (which apple loves to do) I haven't used procreate though so it might be fine. The Adobe CC is very well integrated on iPad though althought doesn't have all the features yet.

I personally would say the Apple pencil is the best digital pen solution out there especially for artists. But you do have to pay a premium for it. Apps that use it integrate it exceptionally well and the performance from the pen is really good. I wouldn't say it's like 10x better than Wacom tech, they're different obviously, but I'd probably still say it's better.

              • @Castcore: thanks what do you think about compared to Android tablets for such creative work - such as Samsung S7/+ tabs? - i think S8's are coming too

                • +1

@capslock janitor: I'm actually pretty excited for the Tab S8 line up to come out. I mostly use my tablet for taking notes so I personally don't NEED tilt and really good pressure sensitivity the Apple Pencil has (although it's nice and S-Pen has both of these). I also much prefer the flexibility of Android, the iPadOS feels a bit too lockdown for my liking.

A lot of people much prefer iPads over Android Tablets because on the Apple App Store you have apps that are made specifically for iPads (and not iPhones) whereas on the Play Store you usually just have the same app for all android devices and it's just scaled up based on the screen size/resolution. I've heard a lot of people claim this means there are a lot of Android Tablet apps that don't work properly and thus they hate Android on Tablets. I've personally never experienced that with the old Tab S1 I owned and I actually disliked the fact they have seperate iPad and iPhone apps because it meant I had to buy some apps twice (originally on an iPhone and then for my iPad) and sometimes if an App was made for iPhone and not iPad it doesn't scale up on the iPad.

With all this being said, for artistic purposes I believe the Apple Pencil is a bit better and there are a lot of really good artistry apps on iPadOS. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 uses Wacom tech for the pen so it is still very good (I reckon tab s8 will be the same) and the S-Pen comes free with the tablet so you don't need to fork out another $199 for it. Tab S8 is likely to be announced very early next year, there's already a fair bit of leaked info out there. I reckon your best bet is to workout which apps you want to use and then Google/YouTube the performance of those apps on the Tab S7+ and if you think it suits your needs try wait for the Tab S8 (which will have 3 versions). There's a lot of things I dislike about the iPad (especially the screen see a comment from me below) but I can't fault the Apple Pencil, again it's not like 10x better than the S-pen (maybe not even 2x) but the design and intergration in apps makes me think it's better for artistry. Uni notes/work on the other hand the S-Pen is great and I probably should've just waited for the Tab S8…

                  • @Castcore: yeah will probably be using those 'mainstream' type artistry apps like Procreate and such,

she has a 2017 iPad A1822 which doesn't support stylus Pencil 2 so used her fingers instead..
                    https://www.apple.com/au/apple-pencil/

don't know if s8's will come soon enough oh well
defs will need to compare the different iPad Pro 11"s and with S7 with S7+ … ugh then apps i suppose

                    thanks for sharing details

        • my iPad Air 3 is 64GB and I have a lot of apps and procreate files and only use 25GB. I think it would only become a concern if you are storing a lot of photos/videos or large graphic files.

        • +2

Same as above, my iPad Air 2 is 64GB and I haven’t had any space issues for the past 6 years despite having plenty of apps and games installed.

        • +1

A lot of data now gets uploaded to cloud storage, I’ve used the 64gb for a year and haven’t run into any storage constraints at all, but I don’t use the device for production, just for day to day information and entertainment.

I’d also agree that 11” is perfect for this kind of device. It’s not unwieldy and it’s not too small. Great to read on and use for video. Easy to hold and the keyboard isn’t too wide to be dysfunctional.

This is a very nice device, solid tech purchase.

      • -3

I bought this iPad half a year ago with the 8% CR and free Airpods 2 from the Apple Education Store deal. Worked out to be around $600 - $650 at the time and it wasn't even a deal. Strange times during a pandemic. I bet these iPads are in demand again with all the stay at home learning.

    • That’s good buying. Smart deal

  • +2

    Can't do 64 GB in 2021

    • +1

      why not? Great for streaming

      • 64gb might be enough for some people. Not for me, I like to store and keep my porn & movie collection offline

I live in a rural area my biggest fear is low to no WiFi internet signal so I like my collection to be available always just in case I need to relax and watch something quickly & in HD anytime anywhere

        • +11

          At least you’re honest 😂

I have no idea why you are downvoted. You've given damned good reasons for needing more than 64GB :o

          • -3

@ankor: It’s because some people who use this site don’t want to be continually reminded of yet another random dude’s masturbation habits. Radical concept I know.

I come here for bargains, not so I can hear about how mr sweaty palm can store enough porn on his phone to relax “anywhere, any time”.. Come on, it’s ridiculous and just constant on this forum. Admins could do worse than cracking down on this discussion, I’m sure it drives people away. Anyway good luck with your HSC boys.

            • @tedzr: I swear the word porn wasn't in there when I wrote my comment? I must have misread that omfg.

I was thinking only about the disparity between the country and the cities when it comes to internet connectivity when I upvoted that guy.

              :(

              • @ankor: It doesn't matter. In the context of this thread, you can see how many people are upset by what I am saying.

Well news flash fellas, it's not just young men who participate with this site.. Not everyone is looking for 'edgy memes'. Consumers use this site to make informed purchasing decisions. The only reason it exists is because people participate in this information exchange. Frankly, I don't care what people do and talk about, it doesn't hurt me. But it makes me less engaged with the site that's for sure.

I can only imagine what young women (or whatever category) think who use this site and see the comments littered with dick and porn jokes. It's not even funny. You guys aren't winning any awards for comedy. This coming from a guy who's watched most of Doug Stanhopes material amongst other stuff that most people would find offensive and intollerable.

I think this site might benefit greatly from a more inclusive environment, instead of snowballing into the little boys club that it is becoming.

                • @tedzr: or maybe your downvoted because your such an uptight wowzer, just scroll on buddy

hot tip: all types of people self pleasure, how is that for inclusive environment, PH is one of the top 10 visited sites in 2021

Pull the stick out of your arse no one cares for your whinging.

                  • @thesainter: I've got nothing against sexual gratification. My opinion is that there is an appropriate time and place for these things, not "anytime, anywhere" hur hur.

So you wouldn't pleasure yourself in public. You might get away with it, or you might end up in a jail cell. You might joke about it with your mates, but you probably shouldn't tell everybody in your workplace or your extended social group.

You're calling me a wowzer. That's your opinion. But this is still a public space and I'm entitled to have an opinion. Downvotes are irrelevant in so far as me having this opionion, all they do is stop other people from seeing it. So if you can't handle my opinion, downvote away. If you would like to face up to the idea that this kind of stuff might be remotely offensive and offputting, go for it. If you want to censor me because you disagree, that's your choice too.
