        • Apparently this was during the US election when they were trying to stop people making new accounts to spread misinformation, haven't heard of it happening outside of these forums but I could be wrong. I mean I don't really care about the Facebook hate, I only have a Facebook account because it's too hard to keep in touch with the boomer friends that still use it otherwise. It just seemed a ridiculous comparison. Index is super legit, an amazing headset, but it's just not affordable. For what you get with the Quest it's ridiculous bang for buck, especially since Sidequest opens you up for heaps of other non-Facebook made stuff.

          • +1

@blueskittles: There's plenty of reports of it on reddit too, but realistically how many million of these headsets have they sold, and locked accounts? 100s, 1000s?

What are the odds of getting your account locked, less than 0.1%? (and yes I heard the same thing about them being a lot more aggressive about it pre-election, true or not I don't know but don't hear it happening so much these days)

I'm not a fan of being forced to use Facebook, but the Quest 2 sure is a lot of fun for relatively little money.

  • They have also upgraded the facial foam after a recall in numerous countries.

The foam facial interface is actually the same, they are now just including a silicon cover for it.

  • Do I want this or hold for a gpu?

    • +1

Gonna be holding until 2023 or longer if you want a GPU for RRP or less in Australia, so just so for this in the meantime lmao

    • +1

      Why not both?

    • Do you already have a 2060 or better? Just get this.

If you don't already have a recent VR headset, this is a much bigger wow factor than the new consoles or a GPU upgrade. This makes those seem like small upgrades.

They are also $479 delivered on https://www.oculus.com/quest-2/

and if you get a referral link from someone who has one you can get the referral program credit

AUD $47 in Oculus Store Credit for referrer and referee - https://www.oculus.com/legal/referral-program/

No ozbargain link matcher set up yet but I put a post in the referral link thread

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/10935349/redir

Mod: Referral system is now set up and can be found here

    • Wow, good catch. Very tempting. Think I'll wait till $400 or when I get impatient.

    • So the referral link is found within the app on the headset itself?

      • +1

I see it on my oculus app on my phone. Looks like this https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/9300/90875/oculus_refe…

The diamond icon brings up a list of your messenger contacts to send a link to

        • +1

I'm not seeing any referral link or diamond for that matter on the phone app.

Perhaps I need to be signed into a Facebook at the same time..

          • @cristobaljames: Me neither! :(

Edit: nevermind, i think the referral code only shows for people who already own a vr headset?

    • +1

GREAT CATCH. Cancelled my order from this morning and my mate with a Quest 2 and I now each get $47 dollarbucks to spend. Thank you!

    • Get it from the Oculus store if you can - warranty and support issues are easier to handle on the oculus store directly.

      • Compared to Amazon? Surely not

  • +8

Is this worth it for ahem adult material?

    • Heard VR chat rooms are fun! 😁

    • -2

No. I think it's overrated and a gimmick.

    • +3

      If you like POV, yes.

      If not, then no.

      • You mean FOV? hope 2 pro will fix it

    • +5

If connected to PC then yes… don't ask how I know..

    • +3

The novelty wears off very quickly but returns when you leave it for a while.

      • +2

A refractory period you might say.

    • +4

Adult material on a facebook-owned device? Sounds like a great idea

      • HYPOTHETICALLY you can put stickers over the lenses and still use the headset which relies on the gyroscope to keep your view point correct. That will work for videos but I don't know how it will handle controller tracking for something that needs interaction

    • Yes! Excel in VR is great.

  • +2

Tell me sumtin, will dis show me deh wey?

  • Any thoughts on whether it will be cheaper than this before Xmas?

    • Yes.

      • +1

        Cool. Thanks for sharing.

        • Np fam

  • -4

o wow I thought they recalled these because the stock facial foam had harmfal chemicals in it that damaged you skin.

    • 3 negative votes on facts that are real, no wonder covid is spreading people don't listen to facts, so you want your skin on you face damaged now rather than wait till they fix the problem? This is on Oculus offical website https://www.oculus.com/quest-2/removable-facial-interface-al… clearly people don't give a crap about there health.

      • I don't understand. That link is the fix for it. So what's the health issue?

        • Skin rashs. some have it slight some have it badly.

What you need to do is either get the free slicon option. they are giving you or chance the facial interface with a VR cover.

      • +1

negative votes are based on the fact you didn't read the deal.

      • Their*

  • +2

Hmmm… I'll wait until the Quest 10 has been released, in time for the next Half Life VR game.

    • I only want to get a VR headset to play Half Life only. I wish it weren't VR only!

  • +2

Learned from this post that there was a recall. Thanks - I just submitted my request for a free replacement facial mask for my unit.

  • -2

It feels like the initial hype over VR has disappeared, has there been more games or upcoming games that utilise it? Any non gaming apps that are must have experiences?

    • +3

The quest has been driving a large number of unique and original titles. While there are some pc block busters like Half Life Alyx or Medal of Honor: Above and beyond…. There's usually a few interesting titles released each month on quest, especially with App Lab, the large user base is providing sufficient demand for the development of titles.

    • +3

Seems like you want a reason to purchase one. Don’t buy it if you’re not sure. You can almost guarantee there’s a Quest 3 in the future

      • unless Quest 2S comes out first

      • +21

The whole reason I come to this website 20 times a day is to buy things I don't need.

        • Sometimes it is FOMO, sometimes the deal is too good to resist and looking at the amount of money you save motivate you to buy it, like a portable pressure cleaner from ebay, almost half price is hard to resist, did you end up buying or owning that one, sometimes you can get free stuff but will miss out if slow.

          • @htc: anything over 50 votes makes me question whether I should have it or not

    • Just buy it to play Half Life Alyx and then sell it.

    • +4

SuperHot and Beat Saber are definitely worth playing.

      Gorm is pretty cool too.

It is kinda waiting for something that is really a must have game. Anything like that will probably be on Steam VR as well.

VR video is very cool. Just doing travel videos is fun. Especially now.

There is a cool VR video of the Star Wars rides at Disney.

I've really enjoyed watching VR videos of places I've been to and lived in and places I'd like to go.

    • +2

It definitely has, Half Life: Alyx seemed to finally get the ball rolling but there hasn't been any good AAA titles since to get the average consumer interested. Star Wars Squadrons got some people keen since flying an X-Wing was the dream of many a young man in his childhood, but it didn't drive headset sales like HLA did. There is some great AA content like Beat Saber, Pistol Whip and Boneworks, but not enough to get people super excited. Combine this with the lack of innovation since the Index came out years ago, which is also driven by the lack of hype.

I still recommend VR as I think it is very fun but I totally understand why there is zero hype for it at the moment.

  • Anyone using their Quest to run VR pinball on Visual Pinball via PC?

    • Haven't tried but will have to check it out.
I've played Pinball FX2 VR on Quest and was really good.

      • In case you/anyone isnt already aware, Visual Pinball X (VPX) is free and there are literally thousands of free tables available for it. There's also a lot of tables compatible with VR mode which is a separate fork of the base VPX software although I'm yet to test it with VR myself as my PC isn't up to snuff.

Some good sites to get started are vpforums.org and vpuniverse.com and https://www.nailbuster.com/wikipinup/doku.php?id=baller_inst… is one of the best installers for Visual Pinball and frontend.

Beware… if you are into pinball in even the slightest way… it's a rabbit hole that you may not come out of.

        • +1

I wouldn't say I'm a massive pinball fan, but playing in VR was quite satisfying.
That said, I had already googled Visual Pinball after your first comment and came across this video and already has me wanting to build a cabinet.. :D

This guy built a pretty awesome controller for Pinball FX2 on the Quest.

          • +1

@bamzero: Yeah the stubby pincab controllers are also fantastic for playing with VR apparently. Others also use their full cabinet setup as a controller and still play in VR and basically what they feel with their hands aligns with what they are seeing on screen.

The pinball cabinet scene has really jumped ahead in recent years, with tactile feedback, analog plungers, LED lighting, real DMD screens etc being commonplace. Tactile feedback is more easily achievable via exciter speakers although some people use electro-mechanical knockers that physically give the cabinet a kick.

Personally I'm just running a couple of old roadside rubbish TV's that had audio issues as my playfield and backglass screens and placing them on a desk, 40 inch 1080p playfield laying on it's back and 32 inch rear screen sitting upright as backglass and DMD display. It's close enough to my main desk that I just run some HDMI and VGA cables to it so can use my daily driver PC to run the setup. I have 2 of my PC's 4 satellite speakers running either side of the rear screen and because bass is not directional, my under desk bass speaker works well for the pinball "cab" even though its 2 metres away. I'm just using my wireless keyboard as a controller in front of the main playfield screen, not ideal but works.

There are free CNC cabinet plans available that you can take to a CNC cabinetry maker if you want to get a headstart and dont have skills or tools to cut your own, just let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.

Future Pinball running "BAM" is also still worth a look although has been overtaken in popularity by VPX and there is a much more active community for the latter. There is also a project underway called Visual Pinball Engine to get VPX tables to run using Unity game engine. It looks amazing. https://vpuniverse.com/forums/topic/5362-wip-visual-pinball-…

BTW, thanks for that video on the Pro pinball mod, I havent seen that project before so it was very interesting.

  • You can find cheap ones on ebay, that people used just to play Half Life Alyx.

  • Is this worth getting a fb account?
I heard that empty fb accounts get banned and renders the Oculus useless…

    • +1

you need facebook, so they know information about you.

    • Yes, just create a new one (with real details). No issue really.

      • What happens to the games bought with the old account after the ban?

        • They go abysmal.
I think ACL and other regulations are lagging behind when it come to these purchases that are tied to online accounts.

      • Do you mean have a separate account just for the VR purpose but with same details as your original FB account?
Does that work? That would be good solution I guess with privacy concerns. Thanks.

      • Correction: This voids Facebook's Policy, so you risk a ban.

  • +6

    Good price BUT Facebook?
    No thanks.

  • +1

is Beat Saber a good way to lose weight or should I go with running, cycling?

    • +4

      Running is better. Free too!

      • +3

        Sure, if you run barefoot.

    • It depends whether you'd stay interested in running or cycling, or whether you'd need a video game to keep you interested? I definitely know people who use Beat Saber for exercise.

      • I play AC/DC or Metallica whilst playing Pistol Whip on the hardest settings with "Dual Wield" (two pistols) and get a good bit of cardio going (includes lots of ducking and weaving) and no future knee injuries, etc. from running :) I also recommend getting a silicon face cover for the headset.

        • "I also recommend getting a silicon face cover for the headset."

          Is this a porn thing?

          • @Buyingcrap: Maybe for others 🙂 for me it just stops the headset from getting my sweat all over it 😕

        • Do you mean pistol whip supports custom tracks? Or is it a dlc? Or do you mean that you turn down the headset and put your own music on over the game's?

        • I also recommend getting a silicon face cover for the headset

Only downside is the sweat instead drips into your eyes. May need this :)

They now come with a silicone cover anyway. For the current Quest owners you can get a free one sent out.

    • +3

      1) Exercise is general is not as effective as proper diet: https://www.vox.com/2018/1/3/16845438/exercise-weight-loss-m…
      2) I get a good workout from Beat Saber especially higher difficulty or 180/360 modes
      3) I've used https://beatsage.com/# and converted entire albums of songs I like i.e. 90s grunge into beat saber tracks to great success

    • +1

Yes, very good way. Play Rasputin 10 times in a row is a good way to start. Buy a few silicon eye cover while you're at it :)

    • Beat Saber and FitXR have been my only way of working out ever since the lockdown started. I have lost almost 4kg. I could not recommend them enough.

Beat Saber is a lot of fun but I feel like I can't go hard enough with it to get my heart rate really going. Because Expert is the hardest difficulty I can do (my brain is too slow to keep up with Expert+). Of course you can play around with song speed but unfortunatelly that messes with my Tennis Elbow.

FitXR is a really good workout app for getting your heart rate through the roof. You can do Boxing, Dancing or HIIT and they all will get you really sweaty.
The biggest issue with FitXR is, when it first came out, you only had to pay once for all content (and optionally buy DLCs) then they changed it to subscription based which pissed off a lot of users.
So if you have enough space in your house, and are the kind of person that prefers indoor workouts I would highly recommend it :)

  • Can this thing run Half Life: Alyx?

    • Yes, via PC with Airlink/Link Cable

    • yes, but i think you need a good graphics card

      • Would anyone know a ballpark figure of what I'd be up for for a PC to run Alyx with this?

        Thank

        • +1

Min $1300 for a new techfast build that could run it ok. $2000-$3000 for max settings.

Graphics cards are still expensive at the moment.

          • +1

@bboarder: graphics cards are extremely expensive at the moment because of crypto mining. I bought my card ages ago and still runs everything for only $300, I don't wanna spend more that $400, $1000+ is insane!

          • @bboarder: Ouch! Thanks for that. Are second hand systems worth considering? Would probably keep the oculus but offload the PC after playing Alyx

        • +1

An old I7-2600k and GTX 1070 ran it fine on high settings (now have a R7 5800x). Also, with virtual desktop synchronous space warp, hits 90 fps consistently. Amazing technology and wireless too.

  • Isn't the quest 3 coming out in a few weeks

    • +3

      No

  • +2

I've been thinking of buying one to watch porn but I'm not desperate yet. How much better do you think the Oculus Quest 3 will be?
