TP-Link Deco S4 3-Pack Mesh Wi-Fi System $149 Delivered @ MSY

Decent price for this 3 pack wifi mesh system.

Identical specs as the Deco M4 with Gigabit Ethernet ports and better than the cheaper Deco E4 with 100Mbit ports.

  • Do these plug into an existing TPLink router and work or no?

    • +1

Most of the time you have the Deco S4 router replace your existing router.

The other way the Deco S4 can be configured is as three Wi-Fi access points with the router disabled.

      • +1

Thank you. My router is pretty average so that’s fine with me

        • +1

Make sure you are not FTTN (with copper phone line)

          • +1

@superforever: Deco S4 can be used if you put a VDSL2 modem before it.

            • @Twix: Yes I know but just to remind if he got a VDSL2 router he will need to configure it as access point.

              • @superforever: That is one way. The other way is to enable the VDSL2 modem bridge mode function.

Same price at other stores including Amazon https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0851D6MXY

  • How does this stack up against the Tenda MW3?
    Thanks

    • +2

better than the MW3, comparable to the MW6

      • Worth the premium for a light-usage household? Internet speed is 40mb/s

        • If you need to move data around your local network at speeds greater than 100Mbps then I would say yes, otherwise no. The MW3 only has a 100Mbps Ethernet port which becomes the bottleneck for the whole system.

          • @aldroid: Thanks! Reckon I'll hold out for the next MW3 deal then

            • @jp1011: Who is your ISP? Did you get FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP, HFC?

              • @Twix: Tangerine Telco & HTC

                • @jp1011: MW3 can be plugged into the nbn NTD on HFC with most ISPs including Tangerine. MW3 can't be plugged into the nbn NTD with TPG or iinet. If you ever upgraded to Gigabit or 250Mbps you need a new router.

                  • +1

                    @Twix: Thank you very much!

                  • @Twix: What happens if you plug a MW3 into a nbn NTD with TPG or iinet ??

                    • @wildchill: It doesn't connect. The only exception is nbn FTTP with TPG.

                      • @Twix: Interesting. I wonder why that is.

                        • @wildchill: iinet and TPG use VLAN ID tags and the MW3 doesn't have that. The solutions are.

                          1. purchase the Deco S4 or a different brand router that can do VLAN ID tags for ISPs. This allows connection to the nbn NTD with iinet and TPG.
                          2. use the MW3 and swap to an IPoE ISP (Aussie BB, Telstra, Superloop are examples).
                          • +1

@Twix: iiNet and TPG not the same, need login VLAN ID, etc. so weird

            • +2

@jp1011: The deal is still going on (buy 3-pack for $99, get +1 for free): https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07D9CC637

              • @bio: Yeah, was gonna wait for it to get back down around $90 again but ended up just getting the amazon one lol

  • +1

Available at other sellers for the same price also. Scorptec and mWave. I used Amazon just for my own ease.

  • Using this right now and getting 100Mbps consistently everywhere in the house (100Mbps plan of course)

    • I'm recently connected to NBN HFC. So do I plug this straight to the nbn box ntd? or need a modem /router in between to get it working? Never try mesh network before. Cheers

      • Curious how this works too - I've just used the modem/router combo thing that the telco gives me my entire life.

      • +1

Yes just connect to the NBN box and then you will have to setup the Deco router to connect to internet based on your ISP. Some ISP's need username/password which you need to enter in the main deco.

    • Good to hear. I bought Deco X20 3 pack, placed one upstairs and two in ground floor, one is as the router. Very bad speed, ~20-30Mbps while my connection is 250Mbps. Returned and got money back.

      • You need to experiment a bit with the right location to place the routers around the house.

        • That could be. But cheap $60 to link router gives me better speed, when placed in the same spot as the Deco router. It covers only about 2/3rd of the house, but better speed.

  • If you are having iphone 11 or later, considering Asus router wifi 6 instead, this only support wifi gen 5

  • Got these a few weeks ago, running 2 as access points and 1 as a wireless backbone. Working a treat!

  • +1

Dumb question, but I have a Huawei B818 router from Optus for my home wireless broadband. Can I use this with that?

    • +2

      yes

    • +1

Yes and also not a dumb question.

      • Cheers mate :). I've decided against it for now as thinking back, I hardly ever have dead spots. In the last place I was in, dead spots were in the bedrooms as it was a L shape house.

Good to know they are coming down in price should I need it in future

  • I've been looking at getting an extender due to no reception in the bedroom, was gonna pull the trigger on these but from what it looks like it needs an ethernet cable and not just a power outlet, guess i'll keep looking!

    • Same boat as you. Think it comes with an ethernet cable so just plug that in to your router to the first of the mesh points.

Then other points just go upstairs as usual.

    • +2

These connect with each other wirelessly and better than any extenders imo. so it doesn't need an Ethernet for all nodes, just the primary one which you are connecting to your Modem Router.

      • ohhhh okay i get you! so one is connected directly to the router and the other ones act as a signal booster. Gotcha.

        • Running Ethernet to link up all three Deco S4 is optional.

          • +1

            @Twix:

Running Ethernet to link up all three Deco S4 is optional.

If you can better link them up with ethernet.

      • Are there any speed drops like with wi fi extenders or not

        • +1

Can't guarantee for every situation, but mesh set ups like this are far better than any extender within the same price range.
It's definitely an upgrade to using wifi extenders.

          • +1

            @S2:

It's definitely an upgrade to using wifi extenders.

Yes I have M5 3 packs, it is so must better

    • What are you currently using as a modem router?
      What type of internet?

      • Currently have Telstra cable with a fairly old router, similar to or if not this; Netgear Telstra Gateway Max C6300BD-1TLAUS

        • +1

Taurushead's comment is correct then. I'm using an Optus supplied modem router on HFC NBN and plan on replacing it with the deco

          • @JMosk: Might be worth pulling the trigger after all then, hey!

        • Telstra cable is getting shut down and if you want fixed line internet you have to move to the nbn.

          • @Twix: That's early next year, JMosk said he is on optus HFC and it works, so i'm guessing it would be okay on Telstra HFC?

            • @ignited141: Don't leave it until the last minute. Deco S4 is compatible with Telstra HFC.

              • +1

@Twix: Hahaha thanks, i've got a 'good' friend to keep me in the loop with telstra info. Thanks mate!

                • @ignited141: My comment was more aimed at nbn cancelling install appointments ;-)

Is your nbn going to be HFC?

                  • @Twix: oh! you're not wrong there, plus there has been a massive shortage on parts for NBN

It looks like it, however there is a chance it goes FTTP and the govt pays for it lol

                    • @ignited141: HFC to FTTP is a user pays upgrade. nbn will be upgrading FTTN and FTTC to FTTP for those that want it.

                      • @Twix: I'm not sure on specifics but old mate said to hold off for the moment so i'm hopeful! lmao

  • Hi all,

I'm quite new to this and may need something like this as I am moving to a larger house and the telephone line is at the extreme front of the house.

Would the strategy here be to get a cheapish modem / router, then put one of the modules of the mesh system direct to the modem?

    • +1

Yes I would do that, spend on mesh rather than expensive modem having dead signal spots in my house

    • Taurus is correct…definitely go Mesh

  • What's the benefit of deco m5 if I'm not on a high speed plan?

    • I can't find the CPU specs or amount of RAM used in the Deco S4. The Deco M5 might have a faster CPU and more RAM.

A Deco S4 three-pack delivers Wi-Fi to an area of up to 370 square metres.

A Deco M5 three-pack delivers Wi-Fi to an area of up to 510 square metres.

    • For general use I don't think you will feel the difference.

  • Noob question, does anyone know if this will work with Optus 5G Home Internet, or only 4G/NBN/Other? We have a Nokia 5G Gateway..
