    ..is the app Australian made?

  • +2

    From their website;

"AUSBUY is a not-for-profit and gets not government support yet our owned businesses form the foundation of this economy and our society."

Pity they couldn't afford to hire someone who could construct a proper sentence.

    • Thanks for bringing this up. I have just contacted AUSBUY and they should fix it shortly.

They must have outsourced content writing!

In Coles or Wollies you'll be there scanning all day if you want to fill your trolly.

    • Hi! This is just one of our features. It should be used as well as our Search function. Eg. If you feel like ice cream, you just type in 'Ice Cream' in the app and all Australian ice cream brands will appear. We also have a browse function so you can find Australian products to buy, before you leave your house. Hope this helps!

  • Not many people know this, but a product is considered "Australian made" if the product has been made here and more than 50% of the cost of making it has occurred here.

All it takes is just 50% of the cost!

  • Surely this app should be subsidised by the Govt!

    • As an Australian Company, we have developed this app for free in hope that people support Australia and download it.

      • Apple also make the iPad for free, we just have to pay them for it.

        ??

      • Developed for free but charged at a $3 normally? Could you explain that to me?

        • Non-profit organisations need to cover their running expenses. Many non-profit organisations would not exist without income as they would be operating at a loss if they had no income.

        • Ok. Using the word "free" was confusing but not-for-profit makes more sense.

  • Why pay for this app - I'm going to take an educated guess that all it does is read the country prefix on the barcode which for Aus is 930 - 939.

    • Given that the OP has stated that the app can also search an internal list of products, I doubt that it's this simple. Also, using those prefixes to determine country of origin is not reliable.

    • Hi, it reads the full barcode and compares it with a database of AUSBUY approved products. If there is a match, it says so and you can view the products page.

  • Sounds good; any word on an Android version? Also, does the database have info about individual products (so I could set my own criteria to match "Australian product", such as Aussie ingredients, Aussie company, Aussie parent company, etc.), or is it just a list of products that meet the Ausbuy set of criteria?

    • Hi, the app has 4 major functions:
      1. Scan a product to see if it's AUSBUY Approved.
      2. Search for a product or brand.
      3. Browse by Product, Brand or Category.
      4. News - keep up to date with the latest AUSBUY News

Yes, there is an individual product page for each AUSBUY approved product in the app and most product listings just describe the product. In a future version that should be released in the next few weeks, you will also be able to search by Australian Company.

Whether or not there will be an Android version is up to AUSBUY. If you'd like to ask them, simply fill in the contact us form on their website and they should get back to you shortly - http://www.ausbuy.com.au/contact_us.html

      Hope this helps!

  • All the Ausbuy, Australian Made, etc, schemes are so flexible that you are just buying a logo anyway. Like the Heart Foundation tick. It's all marketing for money. No detraction from the app, just hate the falseness of all these things.

  • Just provide some promo codes for free so ..ppl can look at the app..that should get you some publicity….

'Pay' to download a software developed by a "not-for-profit" organization…?
    I dont get it…

    • not-for-profit is not the same as free. They have some costs just to break even.

    • It wasn't developed by a not-for-profit. It was developed by the rep's company which is not Ausbuy.

Ehhh why is this not free to support their cause?????

No Android version = no sale unfortunately. And I would definitely buy. The terrible thing is with the reductions in lines in supermarkets now, the shelves are only mostly filled with two brands of each commodity - one company who has cornered the market, and the coles/woolworths 'premium' brand. I suspect your app will become obsolete in time as our choices in products dwindle away to nothing.
