  • $139 before discount, so $129

    • +1

I double checked at the checkout, with the code, they go down to $125.10

      • Oh. Thought the code 10off means $10 off. I I might be wrong.

        • +2

          Must be 10% off

  • +2

Do we need an amp to drive this?

    • +1

Not necessarily, they would sound slightly better and louder with an amp, but it's not necessary unless you find their volume too low with your hardware (whatever you're using to drive them).

    • +2

Yes, i use just a simple fiiO …. Had to wait to use them bc pc wasnt powerful enough.

    • +1

Nah works fine off my Xbox/iPhone etc.

But as people say you prob can achieve nicer sound with an amp. But they already sound great.

    • +2

I've got them. No amp. They sound mint through my laptop or oppo. You can always buy an amp later if you think you need it. I have read that the consensus on these is that they don't need an amp

    • Not trying to be a snob but they sound notably better to my ear with an amp. The bass is a lot more punchy and they whole sound is more full.

    • LG V or G series flagship phones have very good amp (Hifi Quad DAC) and works very well with the headphones

  • Looks like there’s a 15 USD shipping fee to Australia.

    • Will update the OP, thank you.

    • +1

Way lower than it used to be. Ive bought a few items from Drop.

  • How much better are these than the X2HR?
    https://www.rtings.com/headphones/tools/compare/philips-fide…

    • +5

Having heard both, I personally would not say they are better. They are different.

X2HR has over exaggerated bass (which some people find more enjoyable), and a much bigger sound stage.

58X have better separation, clearer mids, and better imaging IMO.

      • Compare these to something like the Grado SR125e?

        • +1

Can't personally comment on that. Someone that has used both maybe can comment.

      • Can't you use an EQ to fix the heavy bass and create a more balanced sound? Or is there just limits to the drivers?

Forgive my stupidity, I'm not very good with audio, I'm trying to learn, so educate me. I want to learn.

        • +3

Not a stupid question. But I personally have found no joy in EQing headphones, at least all the ones I have owned. Every headphone has its unique sound signature made by the manufacturer to sound that way, if you don't enjoy that sound signature, why buy it and then EQ to make it sound different? If it's small changes, sure, but some people go crazy with EQing. Just buy a headphone that you enjoy.

          • @ThatsCheap: one good reason to eq headphones is because you can actually improve the way they sound, obviously if you just mess about with it you'd probably make it sound worse but if you just copy the eq some audio engineer did then it could improve the sound for sure

        • +1

You definitely can use EQ to great effect. Frequency response isn't the only thing which affects the sound of headphones, but it is by far the most noticeable.

Doing it well by ear is very difficult unless you're applying a very broad kind of filter, but since there are growing databases of headphone measurements online it is possible to get accurate results with minimal effort, by calculating yourself (taking the difference between the measured and target FR) or using an existing project.

This was particularly transformational for a pair of IEMs I have which should have had a lot going for them (Primo 8, quad BA phase coherent design, also got them from massdrop many moons ago), but suffered from poor FR tuning. After a heavy EQ they sound very good.

        • if you have the 58x or plan on getting it i recommend this eq, big improvement imo
          https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/9mb3v0/eq_setti…

  • I bought these off drop a couple years back. By far the most comfortable headphones ive ever had. Only thing ive noticed is ive started to get a bit of browning (rust?) on the left side where ive attached my mod mic which is my fault due to my sweaty hands. I run this with a simple fiiO set up.

Could be the way ive set them (100% probability) But for gaming i dont seem to hear those footsteps as clear as my hyperX's

    • +1

Gaming headphones often emphasise the footstep and gunshot ranges, so they give an advantage in that area compared to something designed for flat response. I get the same feeling with my Turtle Beach set compared to my monitors.

  • Woah that's cheap.

  • +1

Wow, if I didn't already have one I'd buy this! Got mine for 200 AUD and thought that was a great deal, this is even better.

  • What is the best use case for these? For use in a music studio, for gaming, or for listening to good quality music?

    • +19

I mostly use them for porn.

      • +3

You know these are open back right…

        • +1

sounds like you're right there with that open sound stage

      • Good to share the sound with people watching behind you

    • Music, not bad for studio, could be used for gaming but no isolation so need a very quiet environment.

    • I find they're a good all rounders but I like them the most for gaming, podcasts and high quality music with a focus on vocals.

  • Doesn't stack with new user coupon. Bit the bullet and bought them so I can finally try a set of open backs. Cheers

e: it also came to $195 AUD as Paypal has the USD-AUD at 0.71

  • Thanks, will replace old ATH-AD700. I hope they are good all round headphones.

    • +2

I went from the AD700 to these. I think the HD58X sound slightly better.

      • +3

As long as its not worse :)

  • This or second hand Sony XM3?

    • +5

I don't think they are comparable, but i'd get XM3's if I were outside and on the move most of the time, and 58x if I'm at home most of the time.

    • +2

      Totally different.

    • +1

      Apples and oranges

    • +1

I bought these to replace my Sony XM2's since I barely travel around these days: the sound quality is significantly better on the HD58x (I assume the comparison would mostly be the same vs XM3's)

    • +1

Oversimplifying it a bit but get the Sony XM3 if you want noise cancelling, wireless, portability or just want a bass heavier tune otherwise get the 58x.

The 58x's are technically more balanced which many would equate to it being the better sounding one but that doesn't actually mean you will like the way it sounds.

  • Thanks OP, got two pairs with a friend since shipping was 20$ for both instead of $15 if I bought it individually.
Don't use PayPal to pay for it as their exchange rate is abysmal.

    • +4

You can just set paypal to use the credit cards rates cant you? thats what I've been doing.

      • Ah, didn't realise I could do that. Thanks for the heads up!

  • Anyone knows how long it will take to ship? Doe they use DHL or something?

    • Few weeks from memory.

    • +1

My last sale came with UPS (and support was confused as to why), it came in just over a week, but one a month before that came with DHL which took about 3 to 4 weeks.

My recent RMA was returned also with UPS.

  • My best use case for these is playing guitar through a mooer preamp live. The open backs make it sound like the amp is in the room rather than pumping into your head.

Otherwise, in general, they just sound 10/10 for regular listening (no amp)

  • Are they good for listening music or are they overkill for it?

    • +2

That is specifically what they're designed for :)

Absolutely killer value here, if you enjoy music - this is a great step into Audiophilia!

  • Are these wired or wireless?

    • +2

Look under "specs" - Connector: ⅛ in (3.5 mm) gold-plated stereo jack plug

    • +1

      Wired.

    • +1

They're wired but you can technically mod them to make them wireless if you really wanted to. Unfortunately there aren't many wireless headphones that are open back which I understand since most people use them outdoors and don't want ambient noise to interfere with their listening experience but I'd love a well-priced open-back headphone for use around the house. It would be great since it'd allow you to keep an ear out on the kids/door/anything else while still enjoying your audio with that awesome open back soundstage.

    • +1

Wired and the cable is long so they aren't portable unless you buy a replacement cable.

  • I use this connected direct to TV - sounds great, not hard to drive.

  • How do these match up to the 6xx? I mean in terms of the sound profile comparison Really curious.

  • I have a SHP9500 without amp. What kind of upgrade path am I looking at with this headset? I know there is also the 6xx but that one is not good for gaming which is one of my primary uses for the headset, so that's not an option anymore. Is this headset better across the board, and if so, is it worth using an amp/dac for it? My motherboard actually already has an amp/dac powering its audio on it already so I don't think it would be necerssayh to buy a separate unit.

    • If you are serious about music, you really need to invest in an amp/dac. PC audio is convenient but suffers from interference (noise).

  • is this good for gaming?

    • Depends what type of gaming? If you're playing single player games having fun, sure they sound great. Or if you aren't too competitive and want something comfortable, also yeah sure.

If you're playing competitive and want pin point accuracy of where enemies are in FPS games for example, no there's better headphones for that.

    • +1

Better than any 'gaming' headset you can get. Great for casual gaming, I've used these for pro competitive Valorant and they have worked very well.

    • I'd say these are best with gaming. The dynamic range is excellent.

    • in my experience the highs can be quite piercing, shooting a plasma rifle in halo would result in high pinging rings.

      • would definitely want to EQ that down if it's uncomfortable. Bit of a pain but doable if it lets you have some good quality headphones for music too

        • Does that not change the signature sound by changing it in software?

I do assume they sound as they do stock because it's what the makers thought was best and since I'm not an audio engineer, changing it myself wouldake it sound worse.

          • @dbmitch: Audiophiles tune headphones with EQ and modify with different earpads or removing the foam inside the speaker assembly all the time to get the sound the way that they want.
Audio engineers don't go for one "best", they decide what sound signature attributes they want such as soundstage, warm, detailed, imaging, impact etc. The goal for the 58X for example is very different to the 6XX or 8XX. The 8XX is much more detailed but not as smooth or gooey in the frequencies that voices are.
Check out the forums on head-fi for example if you need inspo

          • @dbmitch: for example: https://youtu.be/f02gEDr7iv4 some people literally put teabag paper on the HD58X to modify the sound signature (not recommending, just for reference)

  • Oh so tempted. If I’ve already got a pair of HD6xx should I also get pair of these?

    • +1

Nope. Stick with your HD6XX, these are from the same family, so they won't sound too different, and the 6XX are objectively better headphones.

    • Some reviewers preferred the 58X over the 6XX.

  • +3

I had a set of these about 2 years ago. Used them for about 6 months and just didn't enjoy them. Had the Fiio BT5 powering them and listening to high quality music and really thought they sounded flat and boring to my ears. I mean each to their own but i genuinely like my koss porta pro's more and even my Audio technica ATH M40x's more as well. Headphones are such a personal thing but i thought i'd give my opinion of what i experienced. :)

    • Valid point. Headphones, regardless of how expensive they are, can only be good if you enjoy them.

    • Really highlights that the only person that has to enjoy your audio setup is you. Sure one may be technically better, but that doesn't tell how it works with your ears and tastes.

Why am I getting 20usd shipping help?

    • +2

You can book a flight and click and collect from USA to save 20usd ;)

I posted this on the other drop.com deal, same reason here:

If I'm wrong, neg this away but, I'd be careful with this drop.com site.

20 days ago, I bought a headphone amp with a deal here.
Now I get spam from drop.com 2-3 times per day on it's dedicated email address, and no sign of the headphones.

Seems like an aliexpress style shipping time, I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known.

    • +1

They're known to have delayed shipping in some cases even months of waiting, but people purchase for the price.

As for whether things are genuine, they 100% are, there's no gamble. They work directly with manufacturers, that is known.

Regarding the emails, in any of those emails you are getting, look for the unsubscribe option, usually at the bottom of the email, and click on it. Choose to unsubscribe from newsletters and offers, etc. Everyone has this option usually. I haven't got any spam emails from them since unsubscribing over a year ago.

  • Is the 10off code working for anyone else? Says that it's not valid for me.

    • Yeah, looks like they've blocked the code from (at least) the discounted items…

      Eg. no more double dipping

      • Thanks for the update, marked as expired.

  • anyone has any updates on shipping for these? mine is still in transit

    • Shipped aweek ago and is in transit, need to give it 2-4 with how things are with shipping from the U.S these days.

      • any updates? mine is still in transit since the 2nd

        • I couldnt say where mine is due to the weird DHL tracking:
          "PROCESSED AT TRANSIT FACILITY, usa"
          "PROCESSED AT TRANSIT FACILITY, Australia"
          "DEPARTED FROM TRANSIT FACILITY, usa"
          "DEPARTED FROM TRANSIT FACILITY, Australia"
