$99 Telstra Mobile Plan with 150GB Data on a 12-Month Contract, $30 Monthly Credit & Bonus $500 Gift Card @ JB Hi-Fi in-Store

1971

This is a variation of what is normally available.
Have just been sent a flyer showing this deal for this weekend only.

$99 a month
150gb of data with no excess data charges (capped speeds)
5g availability
12 month contract (not the 24 they are doing now)
$30 monthly credit. (Assuming for first 12 months)
$500 gift card. (No expiry)

Effectively $69 a month
Minimum total cost over 12 months is $828

$828-500=328
$328/12 = $27 a month

It's no $59 a month with $500 giftcard but you get 70gb extra.

    • Thanks mate, it works for your new number.

Still concerning port in will still get the $10 off welcome bouns.

    • What's the $10 deal?

      • Telstra welcome bouns, $10 off per month.

Talk to the Telstra online chat, you might get it.

    • Didnt get $10/Mth welcome credit/12mth for the 1st attempt via Chat.
Agent said no, maybe try later

      • port-in or new number?

        • It's new number.
i had last year deal but ported out that number.
          Now register a new number.
They said that's the JBHIFI plan/promo, we(Telstra) would not apply welcome credit to its plan.

          • @nvhuqnmk: Thanks mate.

I actually had contracted two stores today, and they said Telstra is unlikely to give the welcome bonus on top of the $30 credit if you port-in.

            • @Ohz: they gave me $10, however since there already was a credit of $30, they gave me a lumpsump of $120…

    • +1

Just got the $10/month welcome credit as well. Sometimes Telstra chat don't follow thru but they appear to have agreed.

Had some difficulties but 3rd try worked.

"JB do the $30 discount, got a mate who asked Telstra chat for the $10 welcome credit and they got it on top of the JB hi-fi discount of $30. If some folks are getting it then it must be possible - if he hadn't got it then I wouldn't be asking but its clearly possible. It's not my fault Telstra are being inconsistent here! "

  • I was at JB hifi Doncaster Westfield and I didn't see this at all. Is this only applicable to certain states?

    • I just did it this morning at the same place, I showed them the picture of the deal in the post

    • I had it done at gren waveree so defs applies to Vic

  • Staff said boost is not eligible to this promotion. Can anyone confirm?

    • That is correct. Boost is Telstra.

      • how about try new number then old number here

  • I spoke to JB and they said there is the plan for 12 months with $500 GC or 24 months with $1000 GC. I was wondering if the 24 months will be a better option not having to renew this deal every year?

    • The $1000 is for $69/month for 24 months? Meaning $99 - $30 bonus credit = $69/month for 24 months?

      • Yes, that was what I was told.

        • +1

I called the nearest JB store, they said the $1000 GC is for $99-$10 = $89/month not $69/ month for 24 months

          • @AirJordan23: I will reconfirm when I go in to the store tomorrow.

            • +2

@JaeTee: Tried calling 2 stores already, they said $1000 GC for 24 months is for $99plan less $10 = $89/month

              • @AirJordan23: can confirm the $30 credit is only applied to the 12month plan and $10 to the 24month. The JB staff member showed me the deals that they had access to today.

    • i hope this is ture.. i wil def get $1000

      • I got it today, $89 month and $1000 gift card

        • +1

Why would you contact for longer for less value? Only benefit I can see is convenience.

        • Because I want to buy a Samsung tab s8 in January so basically just wanted a loan

Yes it doesn't work out to be good money but it's spread over 2 years

  • +1

Went in store; signed up for new number; then got on telstra chat and asked them to bring over my existing telstra number from recently expired contract. took about half an hour. Thanks OP!

    • Damn i just ported to optus this mrng šŸ˜”

      • +1

Try to port out of Optus then port in to Telstra. It might work

  • +1

About time $1000 gift card On a 12 mths contract ā€¦.will wait

  • Just got confirmation with Telstra I am unable to cancel my new number and port over my existing number as the new number is registered in the contract, unless I terminate the contract :( Currently on Boost prepaid, expiring this Jan.. however I have been using this number for years… any ideas ozbargainers ?? Thanks in advance

    • This is quite concerning as I've been doing this method for years

      • +1

I may be wrong but Quizera seemed to have sighed up for a new contract with this deal while his old contract is with Boost not JB/Telstra plan. Maybe this is why he can't port over the number to his new contract? Most that have been able to do it had an existing JB/Telstra expired plan and ported that to the new contract.

        • Yes, have existing Boost prepaid (expiring Jan 2022) , understand the deal only last this weekend. I went in store and an got a new mobile plan instead.. chat with Telstra Rep online, they rejected my request with the

"Upon investigating the issue with the team as well I'm really sorry to inform you this but as the number ********** is in contract so it can't be changed if you want to change the number then you have to pay the early termination charges for the contract."

          Really disappointed :(

          • @Quizera: That's why it didn't work for you. You're with Boost and still in contract.

            • @tryonthis: Will that work when my Boost expired?

              • +4

@Quizera: I think the only way to retain your old number is to port your Boost number to the cheapest Telstra month to month plan (no contract). After which, transfer that number over to the contract you signed with JB today and disconnect the month to month plan.

                • @JaeTee: I am in same boat, will prepaid work? i.e $10 a month plan and then request transfer?

                  • +2

@randomrandom: I am not sure, I have only done it from Telstra postpaid (expired) to postpaid (new contract)

        • Yep, very good point. I reckon you're right.

    • +1

Unless something changed in the past fortnight, I switched my old Telstra number into the $69 plan from JB. Had no issues. Also never heard of a phone number locked into a contract. In a plan or contract, you can still change your number.

      • was it prepaid or postpaid?

        • +1

Postpaid. Expired plan was essentially the exact same plan from a year before

          • @Michaelz101: What did you ask them to do?

Iā€™m tempted to take up this deal however itā€™s going to backfire if canā€™t take the number across

  • +1

Anyone know if I can use telstra mobile sim from this deal on telstra 4g wifi modem as a mobile data sim? Thanks!

    • I would like to know this as well

    • +1

      Yes

    • +1

Yes you can. I have just dropped mine into my TP Link MR6400 and working as it should

    • Thanks all. Appreciate if someone can confirm if it works for Huawei 4gx MF985T? Thanks heaps!

  • +1

Where are you guys seeing the $99 12x month plan? The website only seems to have the 24 month?

    • +2

Ignore the website, just go in store. Ends today.

  • Can anyone confirm if telstra sim will be working overseas to receive text messages? Thanks in advance.

    • +2

Contract says roaming available for $10 a day so I would say yes

    • +1

yes, receiving text messages is free in roaming

  • I couldn't get the welcome credit

  • +1

    Am I understanding this correctly

I have an out of contract JB mobile plan

If I went there today signed up for a new number

Then went to Telstra chat to get them to transfer the existing number across

    Is that possible or not?

    • It's hit and miss. You can try your luck and see how you go. Or keep trying until you find an operator you'll do it without too much hassle.

      • +1

I am on chat and it is being done for me now.

  • Is the jb hifi gift card physical or email? I was told by the consultant that itā€™s physically sent to mailing address? Not an issue but a tad odd.

    • +3

It is a physical card picked up in store at time of signup.

      • Thanks for that, managed to get the gift card :). I think the guy got confused by how I worded my question. Not sure, but anyway thanks :)

  • Thank you for the post. My contract is up on Nov 12th, so perfect timing.

Went in and signed up within about 10 mins. Thanks to my discount for selling my soul and working at Telstra dropped it down to $59.10 a month

    • There has been talks about success with applying for a further $10 a month discount via online chat that would mean they are getting a better deal than you?

      • +1

I am on chat and could not get any additional rebate. They said only one promotion could be applied at a time and the $30 is already on it. They have cancelled my out of contract plan and transferring the number to my new contract signed up this morning. So at least this is possible via chat.

        • Cost nothing to try. Iā€™m going to be calling up and getting them to cancel my plan I signed up for last year and hopefully the cancelation team have a little more power with credits.

      • I added the number to my existing plan. I don't think they'd throw in another welcome credit.

  • Asked chat. They can't apply $10 credit, because it's a jb plan..

    • I don't think that is the reason as I had a contract with JB and got the $10 bouns last year.

if they say they cannot give you the $10 bonus because $30 already applied, it sounds more reasonable to me.

    • They're telling porkies. It's just the most plausible/convenient excuse to fob you off. They can apply the welcome credit to any new plan, they just don't want to. The $30 credit is done on JB's end and has nothing to do with Telstra. I got them to put it on mine by pointing out the separation between telstras welcome credit and JB credit and they agreed. Hope that helps šŸ‘

  • Looks like the JB HiFi, Telstra plan is being throttled:
    https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/i/4837049217

I expect to be getting over 100Mbps compared to past tests in this area.

  • if there is more people able to get the $10 off a month, it makes the deal so much better. So far only a couple have managed to get it. Not looking promising if i decide to get this deal

    • No. Tried 3 people so far. This is last person told me. You currently have the JB Hi-Fi & The Good Guys Mobile BYO Plan $99 and we handle the billing of that plan and the welcome credit will be applied to your account automatically and we do not have an option to apply it manually.

      • so very unlikely then. The other people must have got lucky with a easy rep giving the discount on top of the $30 discount

  • Two days ago, I ported out of Telstra onto Vodafone Prepaid on the day my $59 JB plan from last yearā€™s deal ended. Today, I ported back in with this deal and had no problems. It seemed to help the person @ JB Highpoint that my old Telstra details came up so he didnā€™t have to enter in all my info. Donā€™t think they care if we donā€™t say anything about our old Telstra days, how long we have been ported out etc, just that youā€™re on a non-Telstra company and youā€™d like to take up a deal.

    • Did you loss all your points from last year. I didn't port out because I don't want to loss my points. I have 3 numbers. And I resigned all 3 numbers. With $1500 gift card.

      • +1

Nope Iā€™ve still got my points! I was afraid of losing them so I used most of it before porting out. But just checked and still have what I had before and my new plan shows up too.

        According to the Telstra website:
What happens to my points if I leave Telstra or opt out of the rewards program?
Your Telstra Plus Points expire 12 months after the Account Owner and Full Authorities have un-enrolled or 12 months after the last service is removed from the account.

    • This is awesome and wish I had done the same. Mine was out of contract on the 28th

Today I called JB and they said I had to be out of Telstra for a minimum of 30 days or otherwise the card would be reclaimed.

Unsure how true it is however worthwhile pointing it out

      • Whoa thanks for the heads-up! It would be so strange if I got called up, asked to return to store and give the gift card back haha but good to keep in mind

On another somewhat unrelated note, when I worked in telco, if anyone didnā€™t wait the 30 days, their new plan would be considered an ā€œupgradeā€ as opposed to a ā€œnewā€ service which affected commissions (get more $$ with new and port-in services compared to upgrades). Sometimes I wonder if this wait-30-days thing is a legit technical limitation or a sales related thing

  • I got my $10. But they only for first month. Not every month, because already have the $30 discount

  • +5

Got $10 off per month via the online chat first try after signing up to the $99 JB Telstra deal with $30 discount.

Just mentioned on the chat that the representative in store said I could apply for a $10 welcome bonus because I ported my number from Optus.

    Good luck everyone!

    • I tried your wording and it also worked for me first try omg!!!!! Took screenshots of the chat just in case. Thank you so much!

      • Congrats! Glad I was able to help someone. If you donā€™t get it the first time some Ozbargainers have had luck trying the next day.

    • Iā€™m trying it now and the consultant just said
ā€œI had checked your mobile service xxxx, actually the bill was not issued yet. Once the bill was issued, you will receive the $10 welcome bonus and it will be seen in the billā€

I donā€™t believe this because obviously the $10 welcome isnā€™t applied by JB.
Iā€™ve questioned it and stated that the store specifically said I need to jump on chat to do this.

I got a feeling that when my bill gets issued in a week or so, theyā€™ll say the bill shows $30 credit so the $10 doesnā€™t apply

      • Thatā€™s what they said to me. That the $10 welcome credit will apply on your next bill.

        • Yeah he left notes on my account saying that I should be getting it. If I get my bill next week and it isnā€™t there, I can refer the consultant I speak to, to the notes that the consultant left tonight

      • Thankfully bill will be generated on November 1st - we'll see soon enough.

    • Damn, didnā€™t work on the first try. They said itā€™s already applied in the contact.

Edit: I misread the rep's message - it's being manually applied! Thanks - you are the real MVP!

      $99-$30-$10 = $59/month.
      $59 * 12 = $708/12months
      $708-$450 (JB Gift Card) = $258/12months = $21.50/month for 150gb 5G access (once I get a handset that can work with it!)

    • +1

Just did the same and was sounding good till they noticed the $30 credit but we will see I guess haha.
      Me
"so i just ported my numbers over to you guys today and the guy in store said i could get on live chat to speak with you guys about getting a $10 a month welcome bonus applied to each of my numbers because i ported over"

      Telstra
"Let me get this sorted for you. Upon checking the account we could see that there are two services are active on your account can I go ahead and add $10 credit for 12 months on both the services?"

      Me
      "yes please"

      Telstra
"Thank you for staying connected. I appreciate your patience. Upon checking the account we could see that there is $30 Monthly Credit - 12 Months is added on your services."

      Me
"ok does that mean you also added the welcome bonus?"

      Telstra
"We could see that already the credit has been applied, I requested for welcome bonus within 2 billing cycle the it will be added"

      • tell them you were promised extrra $10

        • I just left at that at as it kinda seems like they will apply for it within 2 bills? if it doesnt show up then ill complain and im sure it will happen then

  • Cannot add any International calling packs to this plan, stay away if you need one

    • mine contract says already added

      • I am with support at the moment and they are saying unable to this pan.
