For those that aren't hardwiring this doorbell after a few weeks on battery it becomes a laggy POS.

When someone rings the doorbell there is a 3-5 second lag between someone pressing the doorbell and your nest devices ringing the chime, even worse, it's about 7-10 seconds for the video to appear on your Nest Hubs.

Hard wiring fixes this, but if you are going battery - best to go Ring or Eufy which are only 1-2 second lag to chime.

    • thanks so much for your input. I can't understand why hard wiring should fix this problem, unless hard wiring allows the unit to use more power (without fear of running down the battery) and give better performance.
But thanks for letting us know your experience!!

      • Yeah that's what I think, more consistent power allows to perform constantly and not power down.

With the doorbell hard wired I haven't had any issues , 1 second to chime, another 1 or 2 seconds for the video to appear on all my Nest devices.

        • :) was going to ask how you wired in the battery model… a quick google, seems you can use an indoor power adapter as long as it has the appropriate voltage otherwise you can damage the device. There is thermal/heat concerns apparently with the battery model due to the doorbells usually being placed in direct sunlight, the lag is probably because the device is on trickle charge from the battery whereas constant power fixes that.

Think I'll wait for the proper wired model coming in 2022 which should also be slimmer as does not have to pack in the battery and in theory won't have lag due to constant power also it will support 24/7 streaming rather than even based record like this one…

In any case many thanks for the laggy 'POS' lol…. heads up ;) we all hate lag.

          • @karakaan: Yep you are spot on with the reason and how it works hard wired. It works quite well hard wired, no lag, no delays. Works perfect.

    • That sucks, thanks for the headsup.

By the way, I was always curious how you secure it so it's not stolen and keep it accessible to swap the battery at the same time.

I have a Eufy Camera doorbell that clicks in and requires a heavy duty version of a pin to dislodge it. So technically easy to steal if you know what to do. But at least the camera will take a video of the thief who does the unauthorised removal.

      • You drill a holder into brick or your wall, then there is a wall attachment that gets screwed in, then your doorbell clips in to it. There is a small proprietary tool that you use to unclip the doorbell from the holder. To be honest, the whole thing is kinda flimsy and you can easily just rip the thing off the wall.

It's much the same with the Eufy doorbell, wall attachment and then you clip the doorbell in. With the Eufy however, a standard Sim card eject pin can remove it. I do find the backplate heaps more secure than the Nest doorbell.

Can confirm this to be true. My neighbour has one and showed me how it works, i was surprised at how laggy it was. Nothing like how the commercials show.

  • Also, Samsung buyers beware. Google aren't fixing a Samsung (all models) compatability issue with the Talk& Listen (the main function) they have apparently known about for years. Have tried logging feedback and escalation since buing my Google Nest Doorbell and looking for any other way to get their attention to fix.
