100
RETRO21

Way overpriced retro console at $849.95. If your on the fence perhaps a $250 discount is enough for you?. Not sure who this is marketed at but might be a nice piece for collectors.
All in one bundle comes with the classic wireless controller and modern controller. Includes 100 classic atari 2600 games.

Delivery is $14 which should see Australia post deliver by next Christmas on current timelines.

Note: this is on backorder with stock expected November 25th.

It was a decent piece of hardware when it came out, I think.
Probably a bit dated by now…

  • +6

Sorry but not even a $250 discount will break my resolve for No Nut November.

    32gb of storage lol

    • +5

640KB is more than enough RAM for anything.

      • Yeah i think you're confusing a storage drive for RAM.

Yeah it seems the VCS uses an inbuilt flash drive for the storage.

But it does come stock with 8GB of RAM for your random access memory needs. But is expandle to more.

But hey who ever needs more than 640KB of RAM, ever!. Just run DOS on this. 8GB is just a waste!.

    • Why is that laughable?

      • +1

If you want more. Just throw in an M.2 SSD into the VCS and you'll be laughing again.

  • +2

Another flip console I suppose. Would definitely appeal to the gen Xs. Does it have all the classic games on it space invaders, pacman, destroyer, frogger, & pitfall. I think it would be good fun for a few hours and then left to gather dust

  • +1

The only redeeming quality of this is Ryzen, other than that there is nothing not for even $400 is this worth buying.
Series X has Ryzen 2, 1 TB SSD and a proper controller.
Still cheaper than the Atryhardi so what gives?

I get nostalgia, I have a 2600 lying around somewhere, what I don't get is something that was vaporware for years then asking pre release $ is STILL over priced.

    • Smaller company doesn't have much pull in production

      • -1

        https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Ryzen+Embedded+…

That's the cpu, that's pretty piss poor considering what the Series X runs, doesn't matter how much spin you put on it, Atari has become a meme, nothing they produce is worthy of taking seriously when you could just go out and build a PC with twice the specs for the same money.

        • -1

yeah but they sell theres at a loss.

          • @ubcool: Atari did an Indigogo fund and got 4 million.
It doesn't matter if a console is sold at a loss, MS never asks for money to make a project succeed, Indiegogo has no fulfillment for success.
The issue is you can build a much better PC for $600 currently and do the same exacting things as the Atari let alone for the RRP of $850.
These guys had 4 million to develop a fancy case with subpar internals.

            • @[Deactivated]: 4 million is still almost nothing to produce a games console to compete with Sony and Microsoft are worth over 100 billion and spent billions on theirs . It was an impossible task to even compete with a team of a couple Dozen people..

              • -2

@ubcool: They have used off the shelf components, not like where both Sony and MS have custom.
4 million to design a fancy case and some controllers, are you serious?

                • @[Deactivated]: yes designing and making moulds for the case and controllers would of cost most that money.

                  • -3

@ubcool: Sorry no it would not, you don't make the molds, you outsource, clearly you have nfi what you're talking about.
Given that Indiegogo was for a purchase of the console for everyone who joined the campaign, it shows clearly you cannot understand what is the process.

                  • @ubcool: If you outsource it

                    • @chops: Lol of course you outsource it . The ammount a manufacting company would charges for designing and manufacture the moulds for the complex case of the console and the 2 seperate controllers is a lot higher than you think. In fact companies often use existing moulds designed for other products because if the cost. It's how the Atari Jaguar case ended being used
                      for dentist equipment.

                      • @ubcool: So you agree with me … not sure why that’s funny, but I’ll put it down to your personality.

                        • -1

@chops: It's funny that you thought I meant that few people at Atari made the moulds themself. And it's irrelevant anyway lol moulds cost money . You are obviously completely clueless about product design and the manufacturing process and costs..

                          • @ubcool: @ubcool read the thread, the comments you refer to were made by @Johnny drama, not me … again I will put this down to your personality (disorder).

                        • @chops: He stated that you would use that 4 million alone in mould designs, but then just stated they outsource, his whole argument is flawed. The point being that they Indiegogo funded this, the controller is nothing other than an off the shelf for the generic one, the traditional controller is already manufactured by Atari so his whole bs of 4 million going to moulds is erm um yeah.

Better off buying a proper NUC for around the $500 mark.. does much better specs and emulation that way.

  • +5

I tend to consider myself pretty up to date with video game news… what on earth is this???

    Who is this for?

    Why is it so expensive?

    • +1

It’s not worth the asking price

  • U born in the 2000's?

  • My father had one and it's still in excellent condition stored in the store room. I wonder how much it is worth nowadays.

    • I have one of the original ping-pong consoles with the box and wondered the same.

  • +1

All they had to do was make a decent mini console like the Snes Mini and they would of sold a million + how could they mess something up so easy

  • +2

but might be a nice piece for collectors.

    they don't want it either.

  • If not in stock I would hesitate… I was an early backer of this and the NuAtari group behind it are not reliable when it comes to delivery timelines. They routinely take sales in the full knowledge they would be able to meet their promises.

  • +1

No margin for the poor Flippers .
    Players only .

  • Bit cheaper and I'd consider.

If you view this as just a mini console like others then it's very overpriced but this is advertised as more than that. You can install Linux, Windows or Chrome OS for example and use it as a PC. For gaming you could run less demanding Steam games on it or use it for Steam remote play on another TV in the house. Personally I'd dual boot so that the original Atari games that are included can also be played too.

    • Totally agree, not sure where the sweet spot is, but i'd be learning towards $350-$399. I dont think we'll see that price however. Nice way to alienate your backers.

      • +1

The major flaw is that 2 core 4 thread apu. As an $850 RRP PC, it's poor value, as a $600 Linux box, it's still poor value.

        https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/v86fJf

^^ This already beats it for a Linux box and is same price with better specs.

        • +1

          totally agree with that
