Dell Ultrawide 34 Curved Gaming Monitor – S3422DWG $584 Delivered @ Dell

Great deal for a cheap gaming ultrawide monitor - The gigabyte is out of stock everywhere and has been for 3 months. Found this deal and cancelled by gigabyte deal after watching a few reviews.

damn that is cheap. Got the Gigabyte one earlier this year but otherwise would jump on this. Still thinking about it anyway…..

$543.44 with the 7% off coupon obtained through this deal.

  • I got mine a few months back and am happy with the purchase. running a SFF, the additional USB port on the monitor do help as well.

    • Does the speaker work on yours? I can't get mine too work

      • I have one of these and having looked through the manual for the same thing I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually have a speaker, just audio passthrough to the headphone port (via hdmi/dp audio source). The volume controls in the OSD are just for controlling the volume of that headphone output, not for any speakers.

        • Got mine a couple of weeks ago. Had another look at why the speaker not working. Can concur with LilyRose that this monitor does not have a speaker. It has a audio output jack which I connect with my 10 years old Logitech 2.1 speaker and also a headphone output jack which I use with my 10 meter Philip headphone. Not a gamer but love using it for excel and using it for split screen.

          • @bagabargain: i tried putting in my headphones and that didn't work either… but maybe i should try again to confirm…. thanks guys…

  • Xiaomi has similar spec, the cheapest of xiaomi was 450 last Black Friday.

Should I wait for xiaomi ?

    • +2

I have the xiaomi. If it's similar panel spec to the xiaomi, then I'd say get this. The Dell has USB ports, the xiaomi does not.

Though not sure if this will go down further in price on Black Friday.

    • Wait for the Dell on Black Friday.

      • +1

isn't this the dell black friday sale already?

    • +7

Honestly I would be going the Dell - higher brightness (400 vs 300nits), a couple USB ports, 3 year warranty.

      Other specs compared here:

I think I'm well suited to answer this given I've had both the monitors. I've had the Xiaomi for a while now and decided to get the Dell for another workstation. While Dell has better response times and less ghosting, the build quality was simply not for me. The Xiaomi is surprisingly better built compared to the Dell and the additional swivel functionality on the stand is a good plus. My Dell unit, in particular, had a wonky, uninformed border with gaps between the panel and the edges. The plastic used on the Dell also felt very cheap (comparatively) and the unit also came with 2 dead pixels and some odd spots/dots on the (black) corners of the display which couldn't be removed.

Speaking purely performance, the Dell is perhaps better given the additional functionality (USB ports) and response times. The brightness difference is negligible and honestly, the Xioami does get very bright: Bright enough to blind you at night, I'm never above 70% brightness - I would've run the Dell the same way had I kept it. One interesting thing to note, the Xiaomi comes with 2 DisplayPort inputs meaning you can run 2 systems at full 144hz vs. Dell wherein one would run at 144hz vs. the other @ 120hz max using HDMI: Something to keep in mind if you're planning on running your desktop and laptop/another system simultaneously and want full 144hz without changing DP input every time.

TLDR: I was very surprised to see Dell's build quality: I was under the impression they'd be the best in the market however I understand this is more of a "budget" alternative v. their professional-grade monitors so perhaps that was it. The Dell was returned within 5 minutes of using it; I'm all for aesthetics and Xiaomi won me over. I'm waiting for the Xiaomi to go on sale as well to get another one.

      • Awesome review. Thank you for that.
Can you please provide the link to the Xiaomi monitor?

      • Thanks for the review. I have the Xiaomi but wondering how does it compared with this Dell.

      • One more thanks. I was really looking at the Dell and sell my Mi just to add some USB port to the Macbook air. But to many feedback are talking about the dead pixels, so I pass.

      • Xiaomi is such a good monitor. Love the sexy curve and premium feel. I recommend it to everyone.

      • where did you buy the xiaomi monitor, is it the official store or an Australian retailer?

  • gah just bought the DGF but this looks like a pretty good deal for a bit more

  • +1

I'd get Dell for the 3 years warranty with the monitor. at least just added peace of mind.

    • +7

      I still have a working Dell 2407WFP

      • +2

Haha. Me too. That damn thing wont break/dead. Built like a tank.

        • I've got one plugged in right now, running in portrait mode. Unfortunately cats got into it while it was stored and put little claw marks over half the screen. But it's still cranking and just usable. Unkillable.

      • +1

I have a 2405FPW from the original bulk-buy from what, 2006? I also have the 30" version 3007WFP-HC from a few years after that. They are solid and unrelenting. I just can't bring myself to get rid of them.

I think the 30" is as good as my current 34" 3415W, which I think might be better than this S3422DWG?

Trying to decide on whether I should go to a 32" Dell UP3218K or something a bit more extreme like the 49" U4919DW … one is 8K, the other a stupid ultrawide (5120 x 1440)… choices.

      • 2 x Dell 2405FPW
        2 x Dell U2711
        All still going strong.

Newer Dell U2718Q has recently developed a single line of purple pixel running vertically, luckily it belongs to work.

  • Actually ordered this last night. Says it's sure to arrive November 18 on the invoice. Fingers crossed

  • What's everyone's opinion on VA screens?
Personally I prefer IPS if I am staring at it all day, but the VA's seem a lot cheaper.

    • Used newer VAs compared to my old Dell IPS U2711. VAs felt better. No scientific test but great value for money. Xiaomi 34 and Dell 34 UWQHD. Dell wins marginally as per comments above re USB ports and warranty. Very handy ports.

Using the S3221QS too which is great.

    • +1

I went from 2x 24" IPS to this, I'm finding the darker black favourable as I'm using it in a minimal light room. viewing angle is not a concern since it's a curved monitor anyway. Happy with the upgrade.

  • A couple of things before you buy this:

    1. It only supports 144hz through DisplayPort, otherwise it's only 100hz

    2. Not great for Xbox as it doesn't support the ratio and the size of the screen.

    Otherwise, amazing monitor.

Honestly I don't see any big issues with VAs compared to IPS especially with this monitor until you look very closely.

Got this a couple of months back and I'm gaining a new experience and probably can't go back to a 1920x1080 monitor.

    • I thought the 144hz through display port is standard on all monitors… Can HDMI support 144hz?

      • +1

        Nope, it's a bandwidth limitation. Only allows for 100Hz @ 3440x1440 over HDMI 2.0.

HDMI can do 144Hz on non-ultrawide 1440p, though.

  • Good deal

  • +3

Multiple reviews say use superfast settings to stop the green and red ghosting but otherwise reviews were really good for this monitor vs other ones for this price range, I bought this last week with the 7 percent off and expecting to it this week. I couldn't justify the extra cost for an IPS monitor so hoping I'm happy with it. This review helped me decide as I was thinking of the Gigabyte G34WQC or the Xiaomi. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FH8SuC9NvxQ

  • I get URL blocked on the link

Is this an IPS or VA? Also love to know if this has the same height as a 24 or 27 inch

    • Oh damn realised its curved. Am after just flat

  • Hey guys, does having USB ports alone mean wireless keyboard & mouse will work across multiple devices connected to the monitor? I need to do some further research but it's not so clear just based on the specs

    • +1

Happy for someone with more Tech experience to answer but since that had been something I wanted with a monitor and gave up due to extra expense, I don't think it will because it doesn't have an inbuilt KVM switch. The cheapest monitor I could find that had it all was 346B1C (Including USB-C input/charging) but I didn't want to pay the extra when you can buy the KVM separately if I need it.

    • +1

Hi there, I will say no. The monitor come with a special USB cable to connect the Monitor to your PC separately, therefore it can only connect to one device at a time. I'll say it work more like an USB Hub that's came intergrated with the monitor.

    • +1

I have this monitor, can confirm that no, it doesn't support this.

My wireless mouse & keyboard both have buttons for switching between computers, so I just share them between my work & home PC using that. You could also look into software for sharing them, e.g. Microsoft have something called Mouse Without Borders that lets you share a keyboard & mouse from one PC to another via the network, but it doesn't work on my work laptop due to work's VPN and security software.

Logitech MX devices also support "Logitech Flow", where you have the mouse or keyboard paired to both computers (like I do), but the keyboard & mouse auto-switch themselves between the computers when you move the mouse to the screen's edge.

      • How is the build quality of the monitor like? Alaskakyoto posted above that there were gaps along the borders, cheap plastic and some dead pixels.

        • Agreed. Xiaomi is better. I was also surprised when I saw the gaps as described

    • +1

To help you you out I have the Dell U3419W which is also a 34 inch ultrawide and it does have a built in KVM.

The in-build KVM has made is absolutely seamless for me to switch my USB keyboard, USB wireless mouse, and USB wireless headset between work laptop (via USB-C) and my personal desktop (with the provided USB type A to USB type B cable).

I've programmed quick select button one to go to Display Port and quick select button two to go to USB C; one click to switch.

It's double the cost of this screen though and suffers from some bad ghosting especially on dark colours while gaming.

  • How far away do people sit from this thing? My son currently has an AOC 27" (which is perfectly fine), but I'm thinking of an 'upgrade' for him for Xmas, but worried it will be too big as a desktop monitor? Any thoughts from those who may made a similar switch?

    • +1

Well assuming he is using a standard 16:9 monitor now, this would be the exact same size just wider on the ends as this is 21:9. Also i imagine your son is using this for gaming and just letting you know 16:9 is better for most competitive games which is what i assume your son is using it for. If the specs on the AOC aren't bad maybe consider upgrading the mouse/keyboard?

      • Interesting because all the massive twitch streamers I see are using 27" monitors.

        • Yeh that seems pretty standard. Most professional tournaments though they are only use 24 to 25 inches

      • Thanks for this - I'll save the money for a RAM upgrade or something. ;)

    • +3

I'm a little more than an arm's length. A bit over 70cm from my nose to the screen. Dunno how helpful that is.

  • Thanks op, bought one

  • +3

Ultrawide aspect ratio is really nice imo. A lot more immersive in games and super useful for productivity.

    • +2

Not really, MMORPG and simluation or just rando gaming yes. If you're playing MOBA or FPS mostly 16:9 is better.

      • +2

League is way better imo on ultrawide because you get extra vision on the sides, so I reckon it is better. Sure it's not great on games that don't support it but on those that do I reckon it is. Besides you can always just play in 16:9 if you really want.

    • im hoping more games start to support it better. its a bit annoying when a lot of games crop the side for cutscenes. far cry 6 cuts the sides, top and bottom for cutscenes for a cropped 21:9 window (like it uses 2560x1080 even though resolution is set to 3440x1440). at least there are some fixes out there for some games to run ultrawide better.

  • I got this a couple months ago last time it came around as a deal, really happy with it. Be aware though that on some macbooks (mine's a 2019 with the 4 USB-C ports) that you can't get the full 3440x1440 resolution via hdmi, but it works great at full res over DisplayPort. (Not sure the reason but another user reported the same issue in the last comment thread so it's not just me. I almost sent mine back before finding out the workaround)

    • How is the build quality of the monitor like? Alaskakyoto posted above that there were gaps along the borders, cheap plastic and some dead pixels.

      • +2

I think everyone has their perspective. He's right there are gaps along the edge of the screen, but this for me is more the design of the unit, rather than some quality of build issue. I have no issues with that, the only one is probably the bottom edge, which sits above the rest of the frame, dust could go in there, but to what effect? probably nothing, there is probably no gap into the internals and you probably have more dust going through the top vents anyway. For the rest of the unit, the stand works well, largish base, so this isn't going to tip. Good extension up, in bottom position maybe 6-7cm off desk and then goes up to maybe 15-17cm. There is a slight tilt adjustment to sides. I managed to get this at the $495 price awhile back and have been very happy with it. I did calibrate it a little with the rtings file.

  • +2

I got burnt bad pulling the trigger in the early Black Friday sales in 2020… I'd hold off if you can!

  • Got one last deal and really liking it! However my screen shifts to a weird red hue after Windows HDR has been on for a while - not sure if it's the panel or particular settings.
If anyone knows what might be happening pls help!

  • Got it from Dell @ebay for $549 right after my S3422DW got a hardware issue and Dell rep issued full refund. Order placed on 30 October and received 12 Nov. Comes with a 3 year premium panel exchange service too.

  • Excuse the lack of research on product but is there g-sync compatibility???

    • +1

This review gives some info on that
      https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/dell/s3422dwg

"Although it's not officially G-SYNC compatible, it's also possible to still use G-SYNC over DisplayPort, but unfortunately, it doesn't work properly if your frame rate drops below 60fps. "

      • THANKS! Hahah below 60 on a 144 monitor… It does happen to me sadly haha.

  • +1

Rtings has a calibration setup for anyone going with this https://www.rtings.com/assets/pages/3jxtfngG/rtings-icc-prof… so it should improve the overall image.

  • FYI this screen does provide easy side by side images from 2 different inputs (it'll also swap if you default isn't on). Occasionally I have the work laptop running and my PC 50/50 there are some other options for sizes and positions. I didn't realise it had this until I got it in hand.

  • How is this for home office use? I use a lot of excel so 4k would definitely help.

    • I'm using this a lot for excel and I find it great, the text comes across clear and the space allows for multiple spreadsheets to be open if need be.

  • Is curve the new thing these days?
I tried it for 5 minutes and really disliked it.
Looking for a 32 inch gaming monitor/ abit of work that's not curved

    • +1

Curved is a million times better than flat. It will change your life. I can't look at a flat-screen anymore without strain. It's more natural.

      • +5

Second this, I basically never even noticed the curve in my ultrawide, it just felt natural.

Now when I look at a flat screen it almost seems like it curves the opposite way lmao.

  • sorry, is this showing as "$899.01" for anyone else *once you put it in your cart??

  • +1

Just a reminder, this is only 8 bit. Which is why it’s so cheap.

If you care about color, wouldn’t suggest it. The difference between the two is actually quite noticeable. It’s not just for designers, it’s for movies and games too. Although designers need other hardware to get use out of windowed 10 bit displays.

    10 bit/8bit+Frc = 1.07b colors.

    8bit/6bit+Frc = 16.7m colors.

    • +2

Can confirm, my friend is in the process of returning this right now because of shit colors.

      • even after calibration?

        • Yes. It's not even close to dell IPS panels, let alone new MBP

    • What monitor (with same size) do you recommend?

    • I have checked a lot of 34++ ultrawides with price up to $1k and they all have 16.7m colors. Any suggestions?

  • i have both and i think out of the box, the gigabyte screen colors looked nicer. the dell seemed a little blue and pale. i think the build quality is definitely feels better on the gigabyte. superficial though as after a day, the gigabyte stopped working. was replaced under warranty a week later though. had an issue with my dell in that the screen had a scratch but dell picked up and replaced within a week. dell only has one DP port but i think the dells are a better buy when on sale for sure.

  • I have an original X34 Predator, 100hz IPS. Pure gamer. Would this make much if a difference? I have hear in the 5 years since I bought it the VA panels are way better than this Predator? I nearly pulled the trigger on an Xiaomi a few weeks back.

    • Same here, did you get one? tossing up upgrading from my x34

  • Did anyone jump from a 29 ultrawide flat (1080 ips, but that may not affect as much) to a 34 curved?
I wonder if it's worth the change at all.

  • I have 2 x S3422DWG stack ontop of each other and another 2 x S3422DW stack as well. - all 4 monitors are use for mainly for work 99% of the time.
I can't say anything bad about it. 100% productivity work flow is great.
Gaming wise - I only just allow 1 x S3422DWG incase the mouse travel out of screen.
Quality is excellent in my eyes, but then again I am not super picky - no dead pixel on any of my units.
Connected via 2 x HDMI cables and 2 x Display port cables to Nvidia card.

  • Delivery date revised to 02 Dec now… Sigh

  • Can anyone with an S series monitor tell me if they're still good for working from home use? I chatted with a Dell rep the other day and he said for WFH they recommend buying a monitor from U or P series, but I checked out their over 30 inch monitors and none of them are on sale. Also, can I use gaming monitors for work?
    Thanks in advance!

    • I'm using S2721D and S2121DGF for WHF. I also used 2 P series monitors for a year. You can use gaming monitors for work, but not work monitors for gaming.

      • Thank you so much for the insight!

  • Why’s every danged ultrawide curved?
What about those who want to use them in an office environment?

What’s a good 34” 1440p flat ultra wide with USB-C that supports power and data (want to plug a HDD, speaker and keyboard mouse dongle into the monitor, so I can use one cable with my laptop)?
