2 x SCA 3-Shelf Workbench $149.89 (or $114.99 for 1) + Delivery (Free C&C) @ Supercheap Auto

720

This is a pretty good price for these types of shelves / benches. I just ordered two as I needed one for inside the house, but for the price of two I decided I could use the second in the garage. I’ve had a couple of SCA branded storage boxes and work benches in the past and they’re pretty decent quality.

Would this be good for a C1 tv? 😅

    • +1

I don’t see why not ¯_(ツ)_/¯. Structurally it should be fine, unless you have the 83 inch - I only say that because my dad got one delivered two days ago and the box was super heavy to move. I have the 55 and it’d definitely hold its weight.

Aesthetically - that’s subjective and up to you!

Thanks, just looks like a perfect size to fit a ps5 and a amp/sound system. 👍

A mate of mine had something lime this and made a sleeve out of speaker material. Looked shmick and let Rf signals and sound through.

Best to click and collect these. I have one, quality is decent for the price but the packaging is horrible and may have damage or missing pieces. I had to lug mine back to the store for exchange.

Hi mate how thick is the shelf on these? 14mm?

      • +1

        15mm

    Size would help.

  • Anyone in Perth wanna go halves on the 2 for $150?

    • +1

      Depends where you're located?

      • Mount Lawley, does that work for you?

        • If you're still interested I'm in Mt Lawley also. (Looks like stock in Morley.)

    • +1

Yea could be keen to go halves. I've got some credit to spend on them.

      • I'm in Mount Lawley, let me know if that's convenient for you 👍

  • I recently bought the cheapo pinnacle work bench at bunnings for $129. More than adequate.

Edit: though the 2fa makes it a decent deal despite lacking the peg board

  • Is this good to hold aquariums?

    • +1

Yes, if your aquarium: 30x30x30 cm.

The very cheap mdf wood would get destroyed by water.

    • +2

83.3kg per shelf, so that's the same weight as a 1150 x 560 x 129 body of water… are you planning on having a rock pool display or some extremely thin fish?

    What’s the usual price?

    • Usually $149.99

  • If you replace the MDF with pine plank they are 100x nicer.

    • Any advice on how to do that easily? Would I need to get a pine sheet cut to exact dimensions? Or have some overhang and fix it to it somehow? I see Bunnings sells 1.2m x 0.6m pine sheets

      • If you’re getting it from Bunnings, they will usually cut timber for you so if you get the exact measurements of the shelf then you can get them to do it. I think it’s like the first couple of cuts are free then every other is relatively cheap. I’m not 100% certain if they do it for tops, but I’ve seen them cut up some pretty thick stock before.

Alternatively, if you have a circular saw and something long enough to square it up like a big spirit level, you could cut it yourself to size

        • I've been told recently by staff, 50c/cut but for a couple of simple cuts, they're allowed to be generous at their discretion, so just be nice to them haha

      • I did it quite a bit ago so I'm hazy on it. I had a pine laminate board just the standard thing. And cut it probably just with a hand saw then stained it. Did a shit job and it still looked great. I vaguely remember the dimensions were such that few cuts were needed but can't be more helpful than that. Go check the dimensions in bunnos and it'll prob be obvious what to do.

        • in regards to overhang, not 100% sure what you mean but no, it sits in place firmly so long as its roughly the same dimensions as the original mdf.

What's the normal price for one of these?

    • +1

I’m guessing the $119 for one, but the value is in buying two together

  • Can you stack two of these?

    • Probably not without risking a big stack

    • +1

      No you can't

    • only if you replace the legs with something more sturdy

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/montgomery-1830-x-910-x-410mm-5-…

These are better value IMO. Not as deep but they are solid enough. You can buy several of them, combine the parts and build a heap of half height shelves as well.

    • Thanks mate! I was looking at the SCA 4 shelf Unit, which is also on sale (2 for $80). But you are right, the Montgomery seems to be the better choice. For me it's the "flush-top" (SCA unit has top excess) and the depth of 410mm.

This thread also helped me to compare the shelf units:

    • Are these relatively sturdy and not prone to sway?

      • +3

Relatively sturdy for the $46 each. I purchased them when $39.95 each. Cheap effective storage. There are certainly better units out there.. but not at this price point.

I have them fully loaded in the garage, pantry, laundry and several bedrooms (BIR, no shelves at all..). In the garage and laundry I added an extra shelf or two for each unit to easily stack household goods without wasting space, with a shelf directly connecting the bottom and top half for rigidity/safety. There is at least 200kg per unit, both are on tiles or concrete. The extra shelves further helps with rigidity and provides really good storage options.

As for wobble, if you pull on the very top of the unit, it will wiggle.. but so will the majority of units as 183cm is a lot of leverage and these shelves are only 41cm deep. If it is something you are concerned about, attach it to the wall and/or bolt them together when side to side and keep center of gravity in mind, ensuring the heaviest items are stacked at the bottom upwards within reason

        • Great, thanks for the detailed response, I really appreciate it.
