Microsoft Surface Pro 8 13-Inch with i5-1135G7 CPU, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD $1588 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Harvey Norman

590

Seems weird submitting a deal from Harvey Norman - but the price is a killer. Seems as though the Microsoft store has it for the same price too

It looks like it's the same price on the Microsoft store too (or maybe I'm seeing special education prices due to my login).

    • +5

no you are seeing the retail price - just checked - which is what I should have done before giving my money to Gerry. I did manage to get the keyboard and pen price down I guess though whilst there - not so much of a bargain though

    • +9

no mate - been keeping an eye on the price north of 2k

  • +1

Didn’t MS have spro 8 preorder bonus of surface pro keyboard a few weeks back?

  • +41

This isn’t a deal, it’s just Gerry selling the device for the same price Microsoft does, after MS has dropped price recently. You’re much better off buying direct from Microsoft than supporting this stooge.

    • +5

Or even price matching at anywhere else. Vote with your dollars.

    • I'm confused, are you saying this isn't a deal because it's available elsewhere, or simply because you just don't like Gerry?

  • +17

I have the i7 model and it’s great however battery life is terrible. Only around 4 hours on basic tasks with 120 Hz and around 5 on 60 Hz. I’m talking with web browsing, editing word docs etc.

Microsoft advertises this as 16 hours battery life haha

    • +2

      4 hours !!? Ouch

      • +4

Yeah there's only so much battery you can pack into a thin slate. Then adding all these powerful components are going to drain it even further. I don't think a thin detachable is what people should get if battery life is a priority. This is where innovation with ARM type of processors are going to take off. Hopefully MS will keep trying.

        • Microsoft advertises "16 hours" for "typical" usage, i.e, far more than 4 hours for this product.

If you want battery life, avoid the misleading reps from Microsoft, and get an ARM Apple silicon product. At least their representations are vaguely accurate.

          • @kipps: Yep, ever since I tried Surface Pro 3 few years back I know one cannot expect good performance, good battery life and good thermals out of this form factor. I recently bought an M1 MacBook Pro and it has amazing battery life.

            • +1

@Davesday: Performance is really strong on the Surface Pro 8, in fact it beats most ultrabooks despite being a tablet. The i7-1185G7 model runs at 27 - 35W sustained which is remarkable.

I use mine docked via thunderbolt and it's snappy and responsive. It does get warm however it's well cooled. The only problem is battery life :( everything else is solid.

    • -5

It’s not an arm cpu, what do you expect..?

      • +11

At least half the advertised battery life would be nice instead of a quarter.

    • +9

Surface has always been known for poor battery life. My pro 5 and pro 7 have always had a rubbish battery life. You need to read the fine print about how Microsoft gets these numbers. They basically turn off wifi, screen brightness is very low and a video is on a loop it is such a joke the battery life they claim

      • I’m still on a Pro 3 (i5) and can get 8 hours on a full charge of light use. Been considering an upgrade for a while. How long does your 7 last? Apparently the ones with Intel Evo chips are far more power efficient.

        • I get about 4-5 hours. I only run about 5-8 tabs. Just YouTube, Reddit and that's about it. I've got a i5 / 8gb / 256gb pro 7.

    • +5

Yeah, for frequent mobility, best avoid intel-based Surfaces. Great if you dock it and just duck to the odd meeting with it. If you want long hours of productivity on the go, get an m1 based apple device, unless of course you need Windows.

    • Do you have an Intel Evo chip model? Those apparently are more powerful and more power efficient lasting longer.

    • -1

Change the performance mode and reduce the brightness you’ll be right

      • +4

Pointless getting a semi powerful device just to turn the settings down to get decent battery life.

        • Not pointless. You could switch between the options depending on your usage, e.g. power saving whilst on battery, performance mode whilst plugged in.

Maybe not useful to you, but not pointless to everyone.

          • @Yumi: This is a valid concern. No point in getting a Core i7 if it’s reduced to a Pentium dual core on battery.

            • @fastnet:

No point in getting a Core i7 if it’s reduced to a Pentium dual core on battery.

What about the point that Yumi described?

    • +2

This is always the case with surface products. My surface book 3 also had some outlandish battery life claim but it only last about 3-4 hours doing basic Web browsing and office tasks. However the poor battery life blame lies mostly with Intel and their terrible CPU efficiency. Still Microsoft is basically lying about battery life in their marketing material

    • oh my,
my 2014 macbook pro also has 4 hours battery life. with youtube and webbrowsing

  • I have SP4 and SP7. Regret getting SP7 so much - so many of the same issues that I’ve had with my SP4. Had the 4 replaced 3 times. Going to lodge an ACL claim on the SP7 - I cannot believe Microsoft keeps releasing generations with very little improvement.

At this price it could be good/fair - but I wouldn’t recommend any of the higher end models.

    • Yeah mate, I had an SP4- won't ever touch an SP again.

      • +2

I've had a SP3, then work gave me a 4, and then I upgraded my personal to a 6, and none has given me any issues.

      • I love my 4, been using it 6 hours a day minimum since launch without issue.

    • Had major issues with my spro3, went iPad Pro in the end but also regret that too! Haha

The misso got a surface laptop 4 and no dramas… yet

  • Bugger! I was looking to spend some money recently for business and was looking at upgrading my Surface Pro 7 but didn't want to spend more than $2k. Couldn't fine a SP8 under $2k so I got an OLED TV instead.

    • +1

      Congratulations on the tax write-off!

  • Using my replacement SP4 at the moment. After some time the screen also goes crazy (first a bar appears near the top, then ghosting happens) so I hope that the newer models don't have this issue.

    This or a Macbook Pro?

    • Windows or MacOS?
      Touch screen or non-touch screen?

      Start there.

    • Depends. Short Question but ans is long. Depend on your need, If you are in apple eco system then mac. Stand alone all in one Surface is a great device and this price its great but remember you need to buy keyboard separately thats extra $219.

    • Base MacBook Air

    • Unless you need a touch screen, pen and windows get the macbook. Much better laptop and CPU

Good old Hardly Normal, fancy seeing them here!
They can only sell Microsoft at Microsoft prices anyways.

  • -8

Harvey Norman is an Aussie company supporting Australian jobs at Australian pay rates which are one of the highest in the world. But I guess most Oz bargainers wouldn't care or understand.
Would you rather buy at some communist Web site that abuses human rights……… probably….if it's cheaper….sounds a bit rough???? Well before you have a go at me. Think about what this country has fought for….

    • Right on! Apple pays no tax, but let’s focus on something something Australian company JobKeeper as we type out some hardly normal rage on our iPhone 13 Pro Max (or MacBook Pro 16 incher). Take that, Gerry!

      Massive airswing with the driver

      • +1

Liar! They paid $120 million in tax on a 10 billion turnover. Come 1 July I will also be telling the ATO I will be putting in the big bucks like Apple and pay 1% of my wages as tax.

  • For those that have this, what’s a good keyboard to go with this, and is the pen worth it?

    • +1

what’s a good keyboard to go with this

The Microsoft keyboard seems to be popular for some reason..???

  • So I am keen on this but I thought I would have a quick look at the Dell 20% offerings and found an Inspiron 15 7506 2-in-1 Laptop 11th Gen i7-1165G7 16GB RAM 512GB SSD Win11 (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/392973285191?hash=item5b7f087747…) for $1299.

I know it's not a Surface and maybe that portability is part of the appeal of the MS offering but for $1299 the Inspiron seems pretty good for the specs of an 11th Gen i7 CPU, 300nit 1080P panel, 16GB Ram and 512GB SSD. The res of the screen doesn't match the Surface and the Surface cameras are significant, but if they aren't clinchers then would others jump for it?

Then there is a Dell XPS 13 9305 Laptop 11th Gen i7-1165G7 FHD 512GB SSD 16GB RAM Iris Xe Win11 which can be snagged for $1499. Maybe this one is a bit more comparable. Still seems a good option compared to the Surface.

Am I missing something in this?

    • +1

If you don't want a 2in1 then go for a traditional laptop as they're more serviceable and replacement parts are cheaper. From someone who did Dell laptop / desktops for 3 years (For Unisys, Dells only authorised repairer) I wouldn't touch an inspiron. They have terrible reliability. The xps is a step up, however therey also have cooling issues. Fans are always on when in use either at high or low rpm. The latitude series is really where is at when buying a Dell.

      • Interesting insights…… Cheers

  • Picked up the i7 256GB SSD 16GB RAM during boxing day sale for $1727 delivered from Microsoft after discounts.

    • @eggaz How did you get that price? Looks about $150 cheaper than what is available now ($1888 for the i7). I don't really need the i7 model over the i5 but probably would've picked up that deal if I'd known about it.

  • +1

Why is Gerry despised around here?

    • +3

His vocal call for GST to be charged on low value imports mostly.

He called OzBargainers "professionals" when they jumped on a website error, but that's mostly a badge of honour.

      • Also forgetting how he pocketed $22m in Jobkeeper money.

  • looking for a good 15" laptop for work, came down to 2 options: Dell Inspiron or Lenovo ideapad slim 5? anyone with experience with any of them?

  • Got my second hand surface pro 7 two weeks ago, it automatically shut down at least twice a day. Still under warranty, not sure what micro soft would do with it.
Anyone else has similar issue and any solutions?

    • If it's still under warranty they will give you a whole unit replacement (refurbished)

  • I would get this if I hadn't read about the upcoming Asus z13.
