Acer Aspire 3 15.6'' FHD (i31005G1/4GB/256GB SSD) $498 + Delivery (Free w/ C&C) @ Harvey Norman

490

Budget Acer Aspire 3 (Intel 10th Gen i3) on sale at HN.
Some compromises would be no USB-C and no backlit keyboard. But considering the price, those are fair trade-offs in the current market.

Probably the AMD version posted here was better because of 8GB RAM but it is currently not on sale
There is a spare RAM slot for memory expansion

Also you can easily switch out of Windows 10S mode as per instructions at Microsoft

  • For $498 I can forgive it only having 4gb ram but it does seem like the strangest thing to compromise on in a budget lappy like this.

    • +18

Better they skimped on the RAM than something else like the display resolution or primary storage device. Only one of these 3 cannot be easily and cheaply upgraded.

      • +11

agreed, selling of1366x768 screens on laptops should be banned. Its absured so many retailers still selling laptops with that resolution priced well over $700.

      • +4

Good point actually - didn't even notice this has a full HD screen. It's even more deserving of my + 😁

        • just the FHD screen is worth $120 on ebay at the moment ….. upgrading hd to fhd not cheap at the moment ……

    • +5

its because it has 4gb soldered and it has an empty slot

i think all of the aspire series uses the same board

also it doesnt power off type c

also i dont think it will be pricematched, looks like a gerry hn special sku

  • +9

It's a parents dream at that price. If the child destroys it, and usually they do, it's it too expensive to replace.

EDIT: Hopefully someone else has this to price match and make sure that grub Jerry doesn't see a cent.

    • +16

That grub Gerry deserves not a single cent after the shenanigans he has been pulling.

With a core i3 I think Windows 10 will render it useless very quickly

      • +1

It's fine. I've got family members who have much older machines(C2D/i5 2c4t) running windows 10 without issue.

      • +2

The old i3s are gone, you can compare this to an older i5. It's 2 core with hyperthreading and boosts up to 3.40GHz. Old i3 didn't have hyperthreading and much lower clocks. Should be more than fine for Windows 10. Only thing holding this machine back is the 4gb of ram but that should be a cheap upgrade to 8gb if there is a slot available.

  • +3

    Sweet deal

    • +8

      Username checks out.

  • almost tempted for htpc ….

  • +1

As a thought process - what could you buy for around $550 (this plus and extra 8gb ram) that would be at least as good
Even a decent 2nd hand machine of a year or two old would be $500+ and wouldn't be better
I don't need a machine right now but at the price the specs are hard to beat
PS - great price for school but at 1.9kg and 15.6 it is a little big and heavy
Plus if real world battery doesn't make 8 hrs as claimed then not suitable for school/uni
Make a good office machine though

    • If it's for school/uni, probably Lenovo or Dell with education discounts may be able to match the specs/budget?

There is an Inspiron 15 3505 in current Dell eBay sale for $600 (FHD,R5-3450U, 256GB, 8GB) which is closest I guess

    • $550? Ok I'll make a little something…

Prereqs. Needs Windows, must have a laptop.

      https://fusetechau.com.au/products/dell-optiplex-bundle-dell…

Second isn't in stock at the moment, but the kind of deal worth getting.

The laptop will 'work' and then you have a desktop with monitor included for $550.

      • +1

Ollee is an absolute potato and underpowered.

Desktop is fine if you're happy with a desktop and being stuck on windows 10.

        • +1

You are right. Better off buying the laptop here for $500.

  • +4

Lost me at Acer. False economy buying anything Acer. Burnt with their unreliability too often.

    • who do u recommend?

      • Not Acer.

      • Asus (1st) and Lenovo (2nd) for me. I always get an extended warranty too where possible.

        • Asus are almost as bad as Acer these days. Lenovo is great though.

    This for $599.

Looks wotrth the extra $100 but I'm no LaptopNerd. You should post it as a deal.

Just found old posts on this model.

    No backlit is deal breaker

    Ffs, 50 cents LED

    • +1

That's the difference between basic and premium models. Only so many things they can upsell you on.

    • +4

      Learn to touch-type.

  • Many serm to work for Gerry here. Never buy from HN full stop.

  • -3

    No USB-C, no deal.
Also 15" and FHD is a no.

    • +4

What res do you expect from a budget 15" laptop?

    • +2

This is almost a stereotype at this point, someone ignores the price and quotes features beyond the price point when you consider the whole of the system. I'm assuming that you expect at $498 with an 11th gen i3 that the screens are typically 1440p or 4k? Next someone will say "OK show me one that does for the same price" and the commenter will either go silent, or a flame war will start with products that don't hit this pricepoint or feature set.

    • +6

1080p is great on 15" - I know most of them are 1366x768 but if you find the writing too small on 1080p you can always increase the display size to 125% or 150% to make it effectively the same with a sharper picture.

      • +1

Absolutely it is, and this isn't even one of those pentium or atom laptops too, it's stupidly good value. Just joking around the fact that someone, no matter what, will always say something like "I know it's $498 but it doesn't have a 32" 4K 120hz screen with an Nvidia 3090… no deal"

    • Interesting that you all focused on the resolution but not usb-C.
I mean if you can only afford $500, there are plenty of 2nd hand alternative cheaper on eBay.

      • +3

Second hand and new are different markets. There not really comparable. Imagine every deal was compared with second hand.

I don't really like the idea of buying a second hand laptop from a private seller. I'd be inspecting a second hand laptop with a black light.

Absolute jungle, but there are some decent machines at the $500 price point on eBay.

        • +1

Not saying they are same market. Just mentioning that if one is on a budget, there are good 2nd hand alternative.
Also, I thought qhd+ was more the trend those days but apparently not. My bad.

      • Not picking a fight but I think most people would be lucky to find a more premium laptop secondhand for $550
Even forgetting about 12mth warranty you get with new you aren't getting a 1-2 yr old premium $1500-$2K laptop for $550
What would you buy instead of this for $550?

  • +2

Fyi, the touchpad and battery life is trash on this laptop.

  • Can you upgrade the RAM? 4gb isn't enough for modern computing. I'd say 8gb minimum.

    • +1

4gb isn't enough for modern computing

4gb is fine for many use cases. Word processing, web browsing.

      • word processing? now ya talking

      • +4

4gb is sub par, absolute minimum sold these days hould be 8/16gb

    • 4gb soldered with a free slot
      8gb dimm for <$50 = 12gb ram
With current i3 this would be surprisingly powerful for regular tasks - office/net

  • +6

Just sharing that even though it says it will take a maximum of 12GB (4gb soldered, add 8GB sodimm), we've got 20GB RAM running on one here by adding a 16GB sodimm, and it works just fine.

  • Guys if you are after the laptop OP posted and they don't show stock for your area to pickup. Try calling your local HN store up, most stores will have a display model they will sell you.

In saying that I would rather spend the extra $100 and get the Dell AMD 3450 deal.

    • Can you link to the dell deal please. Thank you

    • do they discount it?

      • Currently $50 off, was 20% off untill just the other day.

  • +2

A royal piece of crap this laptop. And Harvey Norman selling it tops the cake for me.

    • i have 2 acers …. i bought when dicks it’s was still a store front and not mail, order , at one stage upgraded the screen from HD to FHD to get more life ….have been real workhorses, only retiring then now as no win11 support ……not as nice as my enterprise grade laptop but then they were than 1/3 price of the enterprise model from work ….

out of stock ….. while some complain about gerry, seems others were hitting the buy it now button taking advantage of the pricing to pickup a bargain …

      • Win10 is still supported until 2025 so you can keep them going

  • If you want to play along with this pile of…. cost effective laptop, Good Guys have it at $529

    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/acer-aspire-3-156-inches-lapt…?

    • Nope that is the Celeron model - not i3 as above
