  • Still $257 in SA…bum!

  • Can anyone confirm you can still use Coles e-gift card to purchase gift cards at Coles. This worked only on Saturday (5th Feb), however, i received an error (purchase not eligible with payment method) doing the same yesterday (8th Feb), so i assume Coles may have reprogrammed their POS from this week. This is using self-service terminal and full payment (i.e. not split payment), with other 'normal' groceries in the purchase. This was also at one of the older style terminals where you have to scan the bar-code of the e-gift card with the small scanner next the card keypad as opposed to the newer ones which you can use the main scanner (also used for for groceries).

  • Not liking waiting for activation when the Coles Prepaid Cards (despite their security flaws) activations were pretty much instant.

Sucks when you want to use them right away.

    • just wanted to know on what type of things would you be using them right away ?

      • Saw a guy buy a bag full then tried using them to purchase tobacco.

        • Fair enough

      • I use them to pay my accommodation.. I just log into the payment portal and pay.

    • +1

Bills. I don’t want to stash these given the past mentioned issues. Then theres the issue of expiry dates.

  • How can coles run this deal? Surely they lose a lot of money?

    • +1

Loss leader, subsidised by the issuing company (they might need to maintain volume re commitments to Visa or cash flow)

  • +1

Looks like they may be 'trialing' this offer in preparation for a national Sale.

    • You mean a national failure

    • +1

I think it is about stock availability and distribution issue.

    • Hopefully

  • Thank you. oops sorry wrong thread. I bought these too.

  • Bondi and Edgecliff has heaps of $250.

They dont give af about the limit. Manager told me just go to different registers 5 per. Saw a guy grab 50 +cards (50x250=$12,500)

    • -1

      That's ML lol

    • Same at Randwick

    • +1

Would have been a hassle to put through as if you go over 3/4 or $1000 value it will flag staff approval and give a fraud/scam warning.

Last time they had to find a scam flyer to give me for purchasing 5 (at manned checkout).

      • +1

The staff was scanning for the guy. Same for me as well. They got a function called "assist" which allows them to quicky scan them.

  • Any one tried using this card for westfield online to buy gift card? Westfiled Concierge won't accept the card as they don't accept signature.

  • Also can i use this card at aldi to buy aldi gift cards at aldi? or where can i buy aldi gift cards?

    • +3

Yes of course, but you might loss 0.5% value as you have to select Credit on the card machine

  • Does inception work? ;)

    • Cards take several hours to activate, so it would be a slow process.

    • No, even after waiting the hours for activation it triggers a signature requirement. Staff will clue in.

      • Thanks :)

      • Why would they care? The card says it’s accepted where VISA is accepted.

        • +1

          Inception can kinda work.

I used a $250 card bought yesterday to purchase a $100 card today. It asked for signature (it asks signature even for amounts under $100). Busy staff luckily didn’t check what card I was using and just got me to sign.

The coles MC gift card Promo from December was easier to game as less staff interaction. That and the longer time taken to activate might explain the cards still being on the shelf.

  • Purchased gift cards from woolworths portal using this card and it says the payment was success and got order confirmation , however its been a hour and i haven't received both my $250 x 2 ww gift cards. Can they reject this? or is it normal to wait for gift cards to be sent?

    • Can take an hour or two, also check your junk mail.

      • Yep check my junk mail also. No gift card yet delivered and it’s been 4.5 hours. I will wait till morning and see

        • +1

Did you end up having the ww gift cards?

  • +1

Thanks, OP. Bought two lots of 5 $250 Cards. Paid Strata, Council, Water bill and few Woolies Gift Cards @ 4% Discount saving me close to $200. Might try one or two more lots, if stock is available to prepay some of this stuff..

    • +1

My council bill for next 3 years is pre-paid.

      Thanks to Coles!

      • Didn't know we can prepaid next few years council fee lol

        • +1

I prepaid my bills by 5k, then asked for it to be debited back.

  • +5

It looks like some merchants waive the requirement for verifying via signature when redeeming these gift cards.

I redeemed $250 from one of these gift cards at Woolworths earlier today, and after I swiped the gift card and pressed Enter, the POS system approved the purchase without asking for signature verification.

My suspicions is that it is signature verification is also not required at BIG W, EG / Caltex Woolworths, BWS and Dan Murphy’s, as they all use very similar POS systems.

    • +1

Thanks, planning to buy Swap / Ultimate Eat Giftcard

  • Can these be used at Australia post to pay bills say ATO ?

    • +1

Pay it online it will be accepted - the ATO doesn't care where the money comes from, they just want money…

      • Tried online yesterday and didn't work. 0.4% surcharge, but i was ok with it.

        • Interesting. ATO accepted my payment online using the Coles ones. Not sure why it failed with these?

          • @abc: It could be that Heritage Bank (the card issuer) automatically rejects payment requests from the ATO. Who knows!

            • +1

@WookieMonster: Same with only1 visa card….not accpeted by ato

              • @R n b: What if you go through Sniip as mentioned before?

          • @abc: I was also charged a fee on the Coles Masterards.

            • @Yola: But a very small one - 20c on a $249.80c payment.

  • -4

BE WARNED…..I just bought 5x$250 of these cards today and check balance, was going to pay some bills and one of them had already been scammed with $0 balance less than 4 hours ago!!!
Now I have to send them all the details incl name address, fone number and proof of purchase to try and get it refunded….going to be a real pain in the A#$ totally not worth the risk. Now, I have to search for the goddam receipt hope I have not lost it.
Taught me a lesson NEVER again to buy any of these scammable prepaid cards, gonna use the other 4 now!!
If you bought any do check and use immediately NOW!!!
NOT negging OP, but just to warn people it is NOT worth the risk, save less than10% after all the fees per card and you lose all $250 in one go!!

    • +10

Could it be that it’s not activated yet ?
It’s usually taking couple of hours to activate.

    • Cheers for the heads up mate. Keep us updated.
EDIT: If it’s been hacked you should be able to see the transaction that emptied it. Otherwise it may be a glitch.

    • Wow that sucks. What did they spend it on, can you see the purchases?

      • +1

More likely to be his own mistake. Scammer may redeem a bit to start with, but not the whole balance.

    • +1

      not worth the risk.

Please don't get into risk management .
I'd say maybe 1 in 5k might fall to a scam meaning they are way above the odds :)

    • Is it possible the card is faulty? I can’t imagine how rare that would be having your card hacked.

  • Cheers OP! I bought 5 x $250 and was able to put it towards some bills.

  • I just used this card online to top up my RTA e-toll account. Surcharge was $1.10 on $240 payment.

  • Can this card use to pay off Z1p?

    • no, gift cards do not work with Zip.

  • +1

how long is the activation taking currently?

    • +1

      Mine took 6 hours

  • +1

my card got activated in 4hours, but when I'm trying to use it online it keeps declining. I can see the bal is loaded on the card.

    • +2

How long ago were the funds loaded onto the card? I think you may need to wait a little longer before you can use the full available balance in one transaction. (It’s weird.)

I tried using 1x $250 gift card at an online merchant 5 minutes after the funds were loaded onto the card, but it was rejected. However, I tried again 12 hours later and the payment went through fine.

      • +4

It finally worked. Seems it worked after 5hours.
I could see the bal on the card 4hours after purchase but could only use it approx 5 hours after purchase.

    • +3

I find for cards purchased around 8AM they are usable after 1PM. Cards purchased at around 1:30PM are usable after 7PM. Cards I purchased this afternoon at around 3PM were usable after 9PM.

There was an older man this afternoon who was trying to buy a stack of around 40 cards, the manager told him it was 5 per person and put the cards back on the rack.

      • Wow. Where is this?
        I could barely find 3 $250 GC’s
Have to say heaps of $100 which no one is touching.

        • +1

In Bondi Westfield, West Ryde, Broadway

          • @bird380: According to this afternoon at around 2-4pm

          • +2

@bird380: Surprised Broadway and West Ryde still has some. I guess the rich just can't be bothered out in Bondi lol.

  • Has anyone used these cards to buy gift cards such a as Stan, eftpos cards from Woolworths or coles?

    • +3

I have used it to buy the ultimate eat gift card at Woolworths, you just need to swipe the card, select "Credit" and then press OK(when seeing the PIN option), then it's done.

  • One of my cards is not activated after 3 days! Let's see how good i2cinc is… Will report back.

  • Can we used this card at Aldi, Bunnings?
Each time i used it, it asked passcode, which this card does not have.

    • +2

A tip for next time: when you swipe the card and it asks for a PIN, press Enter without keying in anything. If the merchant is insisting you provide a PIN and there is no way to sign for a purchase, you cannot use the gift card at that merchant.

Btw, I don’t use Visa cards at ALDI (because of the 0.5% surcharge) and I only use Bunnings gift cards at Bunnings, so I don’t have the answer to your question.

      • Thanks, but directly pressing Enter when asked for pin, gives error.

        • +1

In that case, you cannot use the gift card at those merchants.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Finally figured out how to use card at Bunnings.
Instead of Savings account I was choosing earlier, I selected 'Credit' & the payment went through!

            • +2

@Sub: The card is called "Prepaid Visa giftcard" so you need to choose "Credit" option. But it is better to buy Bunning GC through Shopback using this card for extra discount.

              • @samehada: Is anybody able to buy Bunnings GC on shopback using this card?
I tried, but get payment failed error.

                • @Sub: Keep trying. It eventually works.

      • +2

Buy bunnings GC on Shopback for extra %

  • +1

Some merchants may require a signature when using this card, such as 7-11(fuel station)

    • Thx for the info. I use Westfield instead.

  • I tried swiping at Westfield concierge to purchase gift cards and it didn’t work.

  • Can I purchase a Coles gift card and then use that to pay for this Prepaid Visa card?

    • you can purchase this visa card and after it's activated, use it to buy another visa giftcard

      • have you tried it?

        • I haven’t tried this myself, but I saw someone purchase three Vanilla Visa gift cards on the weekend, and they used one Vanilla Visa gift card as a partial payment. The service supervisor was operating the serviced checkout, and they were happy to do this and accepted the customer’s signature.

  • I am getting a headache. I am sorry if covered by comments, but when I asked google for reviews, there were hits about 'Inactivity Fees' and 'Dormancy Fees'. Not sure if related to Aust. or Overseas.

    • +5

Any card with an expiry date of before August 2023 have those inactivity fees.

Coles is legally not allowed to sell such cards, as they must sell gift cards with a minimum expiry of three years. Those same laws also mean inactivity fees cannot be charged on cards sold after 01 Nov 2019.

When you log in on the Vanilla Visa website to view a card's balance or transactions, it will have in the card's title No Fee.

      • +1

Great - thanks. Awaiting activation and will log in.

  • Bought the card around 11am today and it's not activated till now.

Sent an e-mail to [email protected] but got an auto reply with "Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups: … The recipient's mailbox is full and can't accept messages now. Please try resending your message later, or contact the recipient directly."

    • Yeah, I got same, am worried I flushed $250 down the toilet.

    • After 24 hours it’s still not activated.

      I’m becoming more worried now…

      • My first port of call, with my docket, would be to return to Coles.
