    What’s GWP?

    Edit: Gift with purchase

    • +13

Great with pickles? I didn’t know either until you edited in the answer tbf.

  • Haven’t kept up with android tablets (or tablets in general). But isnt apple dominating the high end tablet field? Whats so good/special about this that it costs 1.1k+ and that people would buy it over an ipad or a surface?

    • Price depreciation

    • Honestly nothing - iPad has the tablet market

I think the Galaxy tab hardware is decent but there's next to no tablet optimised apps on Android, they're all apps for phones.

Once you get outside of Samsungs own apps and services, which as a Galaxy S8 and S10 owner are not that great, there's not much else.

    • +6

Ecosystem, Samsung tablets works better with other Samsung devices (just like Apple). Samsung tabletes are also the best tablet maker for Android.

    • +3

It's a better tablet than a surface, and offers a better 'desktop-like' experience than an iPad. Honestly an iPad is likely a better purchase for most people but I like my Tab S8+ a lot so far.

      • How did you get ahold of one already? I didn't think pre-orders were being delivered until 6th of March at the earliest?

        • Ordered through the Samsung Education store using a previous deal that was on here, it arrived a few days ago. It was already going to be an early birthday present, so my partner took some convincing to let me open it :)

    • +1

It's no different to the old iPhone vs Android/Samsung debate. Some people will only buy Apple products and won't consider what other brands are offering, others will only use Samsung and wouldn't even consider using anything else. Depends what you want/need.
Also the S8 Ultra has a bigger screen (14.6) than iPad Pro 12.9, is cheaper/around the same price, comes with a stylus (no extra $150 spend for an Apple Pencil) - and if those things are particularly important to you, no reason you wouldn't consider it.

    • +4

I tried an ipad but recently switched back to an android tablet. I just found the ipad so limiting - you can't plug it into a PC via usb and easily drag and drop movies onto it, you can't run any game emulators (and native mobile games still seem very mediocre to me), it doesn't play nicely with non-apple devices, etc.

But I agree about it not being worth spending $1.1k on. No tablet with either operating system feels ready to replace a PC to me, no matter how powerful the hardware.

    • Better screen, better pen (according to reviews), better multitasking, better keyboard case, lighter (with keyboard case), can use as a second windows monitor, not locked into Apple ecosystem,

I'm not going to buy one but just offering some thoughts

    • I personally think Samsung tablets are much more useful than an Ipad. Ipads are fine for just watching Netflix etc. but the Samsung tablets are really good if you have actual productivity tasks you wish to do.

E.g managing multiple windows, writing university notes, drawing and digital art to name a few. And dex if you want to mimic windows.

It’s also got a better file manager so you can find and transfer pdfs, word documents to your computer etc rather than going the Apple way with iTunes or shelling out for iCloud subscriptions etc.

The default notes app is by far the best app, OneNote feels a bit clunkier unfortunately. Can’t compare it to iOS Notability, but there’s no subscription, its free!

I’m tempted to upgrade for the bigger screen for uni but my current tablet is still really good 😭.

      • but the Samsung tablets are really good if you have actual productivity tasks you wish to do.

Im not sure if my sample size is just small but afaik most artists/people who draw stuff for a living in general seem to prefer iPad for on the go drawing-the procreate is apparantly what every artists like, when they are not using their professional drawing pads? I dont see any good replacement for that on the android side. Feel free to correct me if im wrong.

        • I’ve heard of Procreate, haven’t seen it, but I would imagine people who use it for a living would use a dedicated digital pad like a Huion or Wacom etc.
The cheapest ones would be in the $150 price range. I’ve got a relative who makes YouTube videos who occasionally draws the thumbnails.

Yeah an Ipad might be “fun” to use, but the default apps are clunky I think. Unless you’re locked into the Apple ecosystem and workflow there’s definitely alternatives which waste less time. (E.g the simple ease of having a back button on android, multiple windows make one more productive)

  • +1

Damn you OzB. Do I buy a Tab S8+ 256gb with this offer and get a free keyboard Case and included pen plus $100 credit to buy a fast charger and screen protector or do I buy an 11" iPad Pro and surrender to the dark side (Apple) because I'll likely need to switch to iPhone after that when I upgrade next year. & Then have to buy a keyboard Case and Apple pencil on top???
Why can't this decision be easy?
Grrrrrr, Give me a sign ;D

    • -2

If you like your device to be selling for half the price in couple of months than what you paid for, then go for Samsung.

      • Exactly. It'll be half price in couple of months. Wait

        • +1

Yeah they'll drop some but the tablets don't drop quite like Android phones do.
Loss of value aside though the M1 chip and general tablet software support is making me lean towards the iPad esp as the Snapdragon 8 v1 is falling far short of expectations. Hmmmm looks like I might be returning to Apple after all these years.
I tend to keep my devices for 3-4 years now and really a tablet should last longer so long as it's getting software updates.
Gotta say I'm disappointed in Android offerings when it comes to Tabs especially they've had years to come up with something to rival the iPad.

          • +3

@Clarky77: The ipads are good for sure. I'm reticent to go into the apple ecosystem though. Pretty soon I'll be walking with ipod Max with beats by dre tattooed on my backside 😂

            • @Raj09: Haha and telling all your friends how lucky you were to pay $7000 to be tattooed at the genius Bar ;P

          • @Clarky77: I've got the tab s4, s6and s7. While the apps are not as polished as the Apple ipads, the screens are top notch and that's been the best part of using these tablets

            • @Raj09: I have the S2 and S6 lite. What a downgrade in screen quality lol. But for roughly $400 the s6 lite was a bargain at the time last year.
I actually got excited at this deal thinking the S8 was $499 pre order lol. Guess il wait abit longer.

      • Where can I get a tab S7+ for $600? I've been waiting years

        • Me to! They got down to about $850 if you imported them from the US at the height of the pandemic but that's about the best I've seen over the last 18 months.

          • @Clarky77: I bought my S7+ for $849 I think last November 2021. Samsung had 35% the S7+ tablets. I think around $850-$950 should be the price of S8 plus then S8 maybe around $650-$750.

            • @AirJordan23: Yep. I'll buy around that

            • @AirJordan23: Yeah good luck with those prices. The $800 pink s7+ was a clearance sale from samsung. The S7 Fe is still around $650 Street price.

              • @krisspy: I managed to get the navy blue S7+ for $849 with $50 newsletter voucher as well.

    • Ipad Mini!

    • If you’re going to be using the pen/stylus then Samsung by far.

Apple makes using it’s pencil a chore with it’s subpar file manager to mark pdfs etc. Samsung notes is built in and seems to have all the features of ios Notability (which requires a subscription)

  • Looks like $100 credit offer is gone

    • +1

Maybe next time I'll update from the S2.

In the meantime I'll consider reading the procrastination book i downloaded for free.

      • Xiaomi Pad 5 is a pretty decent alternative to the base model.

  • -8

Android tablets are very laggy when used for a long time. They tend to utilise high computing power to support sluggish hardware-firmware-os-software integration. It worked well on phone but when resolution scaled up, you started to see the difference. With that price, you better buy iPad Air

    • +8

      lol do you even… what

      no

please substantiate your very wrong claim

      • +3

They've obviously never tried using anything more than a $49 Kmart tablet running Android 6. To which case, yes I agree.

        • especially since most Android tablets have lower resolution than phones…

        • -6

          I owned Galaxy S3, Note 2, Note 4, Note 4 edge, Pixel 1, Pixel 2, Pixel 3, Pixel 5, Nexus 6P, Galaxy Note pro 11.

I participated in XDA-developer forum since cynanogen mod still alive, at that time, there were omega rom, resurrection rom as well, I donated to them every few updates. My mom iPad 2nd gen is still working well while my Galaxy Note pro 11 was landfilled years ago.

My love for Android peaked when they released Android Monotune ads, be different, not the same https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_1Wv6CAr4c

After Google Pixel 3 since Google's Pixel Camera Mastermind Moves To Adobe, the ecosystem declined. Google office is infested with wokeness, not product innovation, luckily, their search engine and cloud team saved the phone division.
          https://in.mashable.com/tech/15746/googles-pixel-camera-mast…

As a customer, my loyalty is the tax that I paid for, smart customers changed product/service provider more often because companies paid for acquisition, not retention, it's a mechanism in a free market that somehow maintains competitiveness. Ozbargain community is the same, a group of like-minded customer who switched more often to get the best deal. So there is no shame switching for Apple when they are on the top of the market with their M1.

When you stacked Apple Giftcard + Education Store + Creditcard bonus and sell your old iDevices (which kept the price very well over time), the Apple products is competitive to Android regarding price, and the quality is unarguably much better

          • +4

            @cenakhoa:

            infested with wokeness

okay, at this point you lost all credibility bud

            • @Zorlin: Just for one statement, regardless other information? It’s hard to be rational all the time bud

      • I can't find all of the articles I read in the past about this topic. Maybe Google search engine does some tricks, I really wish to have studied software engineer to understand it better. Here is one of the articles, it's old and said "in-the-near-future" but I reckon the situation is still the same. The best way to test tablet screen responsiveness is to play several hours of fruit ninja in both OS, better add some background app to put more pressure on ram

        https://www.phonearena.com/news/Here-is-why-Android-is-laggy…

        • +1

The article you linked is from 2011. Android has changed in not-insignificant ways since then.

          • -1

@Zorlin: Yeah, it's very hard to find similar analysis for up-to-date OS version of both system. I guess either the SW engineers don't want to do it afraiding Google's blocking their career or they just want to maintain balance for the duopoly and let the Android ecosystem grows, bringing more economic benefits in generals for the industry.

I still buys several Pixel phones a year for my old relatives who use them just for facebook and camera, decent price https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/683506 (although this proved that Android price dropped very fast, the initial high price is the result of marketing)

But if I bought myself electronics, I always choose Apple now. Thanks ozbargain for deals and tricks that I can afford apple products.

What irritate me is that people take sides blindly, while their own selves benefits should be the top priority.
Android fans shamed Apple fan for expensive products that used only for Facebook, so they didn't bought the best deal just to stay different.

            • @cenakhoa:

(although this proved that Android price dropped very fast, the initial high price is the result of marketing)

no, this proved that old products running old software with outdated specs are cheap.

            • +2

@cenakhoa: You're not wrong, you are however behind the times.

The hardware is so powerful it is literally no longer a concern. The cheapest model comes with 8gb of RAM.

The software is also carrying less bloat than it used to.

Apple products keep their value because of Apple's brand power, and their close management of retailers (so discounts don't happen). It has nothing to do with the hardware or the quality of the product.

    • -1

      Democratic censorship, I like it

  • S8 ultra is $1700 after you factor in the gift card.
Factor in case and keyboard (around $200 for 3rd party?)
    It’s around $1500.
    Cheaper than iPad Pro 12.9.

    • Is it better though?

      • +1

        Depend on use case.
For media consumption I say it is better because of OLED and 2” bigger screen.
If you need a laptop replacement, Dex is better than iOS

        • Dex isn't really a laptop replacement though it's just Android set out in a kind of windows format with optimisations for keyboard and mouse but besides that it didn't do anything extra in any real sense. It is cool being able to use a bigger display if you want to share stuff and use keyboard ECT for typing but that can be done just as easily with a keyboard Cover and trackpad. No doubt it's the best Android tab ever but they are still behind iPad when it comes to processors and software ect esp when comparing with the M1 iPad Pro models and I say that as someone who prefers Android and wants to see Android win in the tablet space.

          • @Clarky77: Yeah, the main advantage is the bigger screen.
But if you are happy with the 12.9" then the Pro is a much better tablet.

    • Save another $200 for the 128gb version. Anyway it has sd card slot.

    • But costs almost twice as much as a Lenovo Duet 5 (13.3" AMOLED screen + kickstand + keyboard cover).

      • That's a good point, and a far more versatile device. Only thing slightly annoying me about current duet (ten inch) is that not all Android apps work on it.

      • I was excited for the duet but after seeing it at jb, it's trash. Get the S7 Fe over it if you don't need chrome OS specifically.

Speakers are weak, screen is grainy (noticeable screen door) and the tablet barely knows if the keyboard is attached half the time.

        • +1

Are you sure you saw the new Duet 5 and not the old Duet? they are both available at JB.

Haven’t had the chance to compare it side by side with other new tablets, but I just had another closer look at it and compared it to the other two 2-in-1 displays I have at home: an HP Spectre x360 13.3” IPS FHD and a Microsoft Surface Book 13.5” 3000x2000 IPS display, I really can’t see a noticeable difference in text sharpness or any sort of a screen door effect from a normal viewing distance (of about 1.5 feet). But I agree there is a small difference in sharpness if I bring my face closer to the screen. Although when it comes to displaying images and high-quality video the Duet looks better.

I can however see some rainbow banding thing happening with the Duet 5 when tilting it from side to side, but nothing when looking at the screen straight on. Not saying the Duet 5 screen is up there with the top-of-the-line Samsung AMOLEDs, but it certainly can hold its ground against very good IPS screens in the market (both the Spectre and Surface book screens are rated high), which is why I’m surprised you call it trash compared to a Tab 7FE which has an IPS screen.

          • @opt: It was definitely duet 5,ive been keeping tabs on it and went to jb as soon as they had it in stock.

Ive actually got a spectre x360 aswell (albeit 2016 model) and text looks way better on it.

Watching 4k videos on YouTube looked good, perfect aspect ratio and no noticeable grain..but the speakers were so tinny. As soon as I pulled up ozbargain on the browser, I could clearly see screen door effect and rainbows on white background.

  • What’s the best android phone this days that give Apple iPhone run for its money ?

    • +1

Depends on what you want to do, any mid-range android phone will give you basic smartphone features and a decent camera for a fraction of an iPhone's cost. But if you want a comparable camera and similar performance then a new Samsung Galaxy S or a Pixel phone will be just as good as (if not better than) a new iPhone.

    • For cameras?
Sony Xperia. By far the best. (More expensive too)

Samsung phones are the only competition as a whole but feel laggy/bloated (slightly)

Might as well try a folding phone for the novelty

Gaming phones like Asus RoG etc have really good specs and isn’t Samsung. (Not as good camera though, but have headphone jacks etc.)

  • Each to their own, but That's a lot of money for a tablet.

  • +1

I don't have a single apple product currently but when I need to buy a tablet eventually there's no way any android tablet in this price range is justified compared to the ipad. The only major upside I can see for the Samsung is the micro sd slot, price per inch ;) and maybe Dex. That is one major win for android but isn't enough to trump Apples monopoly over this market segment.

I really hope qualcomm and tablet manufacturers step up their game to give the m1 ipad some sort of competition, this is one step in the right direction.

    • +1

Apart from the specs, iOS is smooth, stable and straight forward. Thats why most school use iPad not android tablet

      • +2

Actually the devices used in schools/workplaces tend to just follow what dominates the local market. In countries where Android dominates, for example, you'll find work-issued devices are often Android, whereas you wouldn't see that here.

    • I agree! I really wanted the tab s8 models to be amazing and they are good but still aren't in the league of the iPad Pro models.
Snapdragon needed to pull out a big effort so both laptops and premium tablets could compete with M1 powered devices but instead the Snapdragon 8 v1 is just another incremental improvement with many flaws even to the point some think the Exynos and MediaTek chips are superior, I'm not sure I agree with that but the fact the argument can be made just goes to show how much Qualcomm development has slowed and fallen behind Apple.
Fingers crossed the rumoured Pixel Tab and Google processor can push Android tabs into that elite level.

    • +1

And ipad pro destroys s8 ultra on benchmarks.

*i dont have an ipad pro just saw on youtube

  • I got a free Samsung 128GB EVO Plus Micro SD Memory Card included with mine by following the discounts listed on the Amazon AU website by adding both at the same time. This was using the above code too. Did anyone else do this? It was about 6 hours ago though when I ordered it after getting a notification via the app.

  • +4

I don't get why almost every Samsung tablet deal has so many comments stating its inferiority to the iPad, just like the tired Samsung vs iPhone debate. They offer such different experiences and it's so very subjective; you won't really know which suits your personal preferences and needs better unless you try both. I've used both and they're so different, and the specs had surprisingly little effect on which I liked better - it was more about the experience, e.g. flexibility, design etc. But both being high-end devices, they were both fantastic, and both equally overpriced. They're like shoes, just find one that you - not other people - like, and stick with it.

  • Not sure how tablets/iPads at this price still sell unless it's compulsory in schools or workplaces. I'd much rather get a 2 in 1 laptop that can be a tablet or a laptop (with full Windows) and not have to worry about apps?

I'm guessing those that have tablets also have a desktop for serious work? Couldn't imagine having to do everything on an iPad. So many programs I'd need ported over first.

    • Alot of casual users really. Using a tablet is just much easier to use than a laptop, everything is in one store.

I personally cant do anything serious on a tablet other than browse or watch things. But still contemplating on getting the ultra, just because 14" tablet lol.

Already got a 2 in 1 from work and a gaming rig that I never use, could probably use moonlight to stream to this in the toilet.

    • ASUS flow?

  • will the s7 plus come down in price anytime soon? there isnt any real upgrade over the s7 series isnt there?

  • +1

For anyone who is looking for a large tablet with a good quality AMOLED screen for media consumption or a tablet for light productivity work and web browsing with a keyboard attachment (but not gaming) the Lenovo Duet 5 IMHO is a much better buy at $697 for 4GB and $897 for 8GB.

Since the Duet is a chromebook you can also run Android apps, but it will not be as fast as a Tab 8, therefore games will not work that well. However, for everything else the Duet may provide a better experience. The biggest advantage of a chromebook is you get the full desktop chrome browser with all the plugins (adblockers, VPNs, you name it..). You can also install Linux apps. The Duet also comes with a kickstand and a keyboard in the box free of charge, some bundles also comes with a pen.

I had the 4GB Duet 5 for few days (upgraded from the original Duet) and loving it. The 13.3" AMOLED screen is amazing, battery life is also pretty impressive, and the included keyboard is also pretty decent.

    • Reviews have said that the OLED pixel arrangement makes text not as sharp. Have you noticed anything?

It seems like a great device for reading

      • +1

It’s a 13.3” with a 1080p display, so not quite sure if the text sharpness concern some have raised is due to the lower than average resolution (for the screen size) or the subpixel arrangement. Anyhow, I also have a 13.3” HP spectre laptop that uses a 1080p IPS screen and I can’t say I find any difference in text sharpness (perhaps if I pixel peep at 5cm from the screen I could maybe see a difference, but not from a comfortable viewing distance of 1~2 feet), but having said that I should also probably mention that I don’t have the eyesight of a 20 year old, so your experience may vary. One thing for sure tho, the AMOLED screen on the Duet is more vibrant than the IPS on my Spectre. And for media consumption (which is what I mostly use the tablet for) its definitely better.

    • How's the real world performance? Snappy enough? (Original duet is a bit slow - although amazing for the price)

      • +1

Its noticeably snappier than the original Duet for sure and quite usable, but I do find it a bit sluggish compared to my Pixel 6 Pro and the HP Spectre notebook for general web browsing and switching between apps. But then again both those devices are 2~4 times more expensive and have way better specs so not too surprised.
Having used the original Duet for over a year I'd say the Duet 5 is a worthy upgrade especially for the screen.

  • +1

I’m going to upgrade my last gen ipad pro now, was looking for a deal on the samsung tab s8 ultra, was going to go through samsung website but this is even better. As someone that has used exclusively ipads since forever but uses android phones I just can’t stand apples locked down eco system. I find myself constantly switching to my pixel for better gmail experience, better web browsing through chrome, I just love how google throws up new random stories in a new tab before you search and you can pick what interests you etc. productivity for work is much easier on android as well with office suite etc. I’m just going off recently using a tab s7 a family member had to get a feel for it and I can’t believe what I was missing all be it on a much larger form factor compared to ipad.

Ipads are awesome, sure, but I just find them so locked down by comparison, I also think dex is awesome after seeing it in action. Sure it’s not a full blown desktop replacement but it’s pretty damn close from what I’ve seen not to mention the new 14” ultra is apparently a gaming emulation beast if you like your old nes, megadrive, ps2 games etc on the go. Apple is sexier device but samsung have nailed these new designs by the looks of it, the battery life looks to great as well in the ultra. I was tempted by the m1 ipad pro but in reality that extra power apart from battery life and the fact you can’t fully utilise it like in a m1 mac just goes to waste on a ipad with its locked down nature.

  • Edit to my above post. I actually ordered the 256gb 5g version (comes with 12gb ram instead 8gb) through samsung. I spoke to them through chat and they gave me $100 voucher code to take off the price on top of the free promo keyboard case I got. Also to note is the GWP ships direct from samsung with your order so no mucking around entering codes on their website when purchasing elsewhere to redeem the GWP then having to wait upto 30 additional days for the gift to ship.

    Just something to note.

    • The ultra is saying shipped from 24th March onwards but, Amazon is possibility from the 4th. Even if you get the gift code from Amazon and claim though Samsung you most likely will have both way before

      • Yeh my mum just got the s8+ ordered it last Friday before last from samsung and it turned up 3 days later with the bonus items at the same time. I chatted with samsung using their direct message service and they matched amazon and gave me extra $100 off code. So getting it earlier direct from samsung plus not having to wait all that extra time for bonus keyboard cover etc as it’ll turn up the same day with my s8 sealed the deal.

Amazon deal is great but I’d just rather have the cash off straight up than a voucher you’ll never see until your item is delivered.

  • S8 ultra is $1439. 20 (128gb) $1599.20(256gb) at the gov store, bonus $200 credit if you trade in and $150 off when you buy $150 worth of selected accessories/wearables.

    • But that doesn't come with pre-order bonuses, right?

      • No free bonus.

Ultra book cover comes to $250 on the gov store after 20% and $150 discount.

        Edit: maffs was off

  • anyone has a spare Samsung newsletter code please (PM)? Mine has expired i think and became invalid. I tried to subscribe again but haven't received anything yet and the promotion ends tonight.

  • Anyone had their S8 Ultra ship from Amazon yet?

    • +1

No, they still haven't charged me either except for the "free" SD card :|

      • Damn. And what free SD card lol? Crap, did I miss out on adding that?

        • +1

Yeah, I had that offer when I ordered last weekend a free 128GB Evo plus micro SD "add both to cart" for the price of the tablet in addition to the $100 Amazon credit.

          • @Findmebargain: So weird. I ordered mine on the 1st March and never saw that offer, but I now I see it on the page. I went back and forth with Amazon CS and they finally agreed to credit me $27 to buy it myself. Thanks for the heads up champ.

            • @ensanguined: And Amazon CS have no idea when we can expect to see our tablets arrive.

            • +1

@ensanguined: So if you're like me, they haven't charged you for the tablet, but unlike me, you're now ahead with a $27 credit! I'm out of pocket $25.50 and hold a micro SD card I can't use yet! You're winning! :)

              • @Findmebargain: That's exactly it, sorry haha. Let's hope we get these babies delivered (and you get that SD charge resolved) ASAP!
