Just FYI Crucial has reached end-of-life (EOL) for its Crucial Ballistix, Crucial Ballistix MAX and Crucial Ballistix MAX RGB product lines.

These budget kings are gone, they're focusing on DDR5. Wouldn't be surprised if other manufacturers focus on DDR5 too going forward, so if you're planning on upgrading your slow RAM or have wanted bigger capacity (going to 4 sticks instead of 2 and already own 2 of these from previous deals), now is probably the best time before DDR4 prices start to hike up. With every generation change, there comes a time when the older generation hits its cheapest point and most production, after that prices slowly start to increase as production goes down and finding high-speed low latency RAM becomes extremely hard with more time.

I have had 4 of these sticks bought a pair of 2 x 8GB (so 32Gb total) when they dropped down to $76 at the end of 2020 (same model number as seen in image below). And have been running them @ 3800Mhz @ 14-10-12-18-36 @ 1.50v for daily use for a while (which is a great overclock for this Micron-E die). Case does have good air circulation and motherboard is high quality though. For anyone interested in my full timings:

    • So was that $76 for the pair, or $76 for each stick? $76 to $118 is a fair price hike.

edit: ahh, maybe you are talking $US.

        Here you go

It was available for $76 back in 2020 (Prime Day Promo I believe)

    • Thanks for sharing your thoughts on DDR4 pricing sweet spot/ price curve.

Everyone's system and their own requirements are different, but if you're not doing anything other than playing games and the usual web browsing/youtube/office work, is there any point in getting more than 16GB? My understanding is most software is currently optimised for 16GB. Would it be better to save your money on an incremental upgrade, to put towards 32GB of DDR5 when the time comes to do a full upgrade?

I would say for that use case. If you're upgrading within the next 3 years. You're probably more than fine with 16Gb.

Consider the opening of resizable BAR and more games in the future using the DirectStorage feature, having more RAM is less important.

        • Thanks. I've built my first PC after decades of being a mac + playstation user. It's tricky getting the price:performance ratio right, while keeping in mind upgrade paths. And also sinking a bit more money into a build to give it a decent upgrade path, but balancing that against the possibility that upgrade paths become less attractive when it actually comes time to upgrade.

Just checked on Direct Storage and seems my GPU (5600xt) doesn't support it. So there you go! Might wait for 7 or 8 series….

Yep, these are the budget weapos, agreed. A bargain at this price still, as there's no competition.
Current & last systems ran 2x8GB & while I haven't got my timings as low as yours, they defs run 1800Mhz & heavily reduced timings, all day in a cramped NR200P with a 6800XT Merc cooking them.
      Sweet OC btw :)

      • Thank you. Yeah I can push them even further if I increase the voltage more, but I'm not comfortable pushing 1.55v or 1.6v for daily use on 4 sticks of micron-E. If they were b-die then maybe.

What motherboard do you have? It's luck really, some people have cheaper motherboards and get better clocks on RAM than others, some others have $2000 water cooled motherboards and they perform worse. It's luck of the draw with the memory controller & memory itself.

  • i'm currently using some 16GB corsair vengeance lpx 3200MHz CL16 ram and still don't know whether to buy this or not. not too sure how much improvement in terms of FPS will someone get with the higher speed and lower timing kit.

no point upgrading mate. Keep your ram sticks. If you ever decide to upgrade, better increase your ram size with the same timings.

    • Depends on whether you can resist this offer I guess. Some Ryzen systems are not that great at handling 4 DIMMs, so bear that in mind. You might need to increase the command rate from 1T to 2T if you opted for 4 DIMMs.

If you considered these as DDR4-3200 (due to your current LPX is also 3200) then the price isn't so great. Not sure the LPX you have (what type of RAM chips are in that one) so I am assuming you cannot overclock them easily like this one.

      • I resisted and just OC my current RAM to 3666MHz @ 18-19-20-40-60 1.39V - timings are more loose though. It is Hynix chips

  • I'm still kicking myself for missing these deals.

Especially now that Micron are winding down the Crucial Ballistix brand… I would really like to secure a RAM upgrade before prices start to go up as the industry shifts to DDR5.

Am I huffing too much copium in waiting for better deals to come back? I guess we'll find out.

  • should i buy these for my imac i should i wait for a better deal on 2x16gb sticks,,,,hhmmmm
