[Afterpay] Gigabyte AORUS FO48U 47.5inch 4K OLED UHD 120hz Gaming Monitor $1230.80 Delivered @ Scorptec eBay

1160
AFPYDY
  • This has the same panel as the LG C1 48 inch OLED. It's in monitor form, so pros and cons.
  • Drive it with a media player or HTPC for TV like functionality, as it has a Displayport and 2 HDMI 2.1 ports. Also USB C port to plug your Apple Macbook in for video out.
  • Doesn't have Dolby Vision like the LG C1 but has HDR10 - works on Netflix with an Amazon stick 4k so pretty similar.
  • rtings review: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/gigabyte/aorus-fo48u-…
  • I bought one a few weeks ago and now I see paid too much but thought it may help someone by posting.
  • I definitely recommend it.

    Need 40-43" or smaller… :/

    • +37

This probably isn't the one for you then.

        • +24

Well, what an unpleasant fellow you are.

    • Dell has some good 27" 4k screens.

      $450: https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-27-4k-uhd-usb-c-monitor…
      (65W PD, USB 3.2 gen1)

      $900: https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-ultrasharp-27-4k-usb-c-…
      (Ultrasharp, 90W PD, Ethernet, USB-C/w 15W, 10Gbps USB,)

I've got the older version of the second one (90W PD, no ethernet, shitty internal USB hub (480Mbps), but fine for kybd & mouse)
Also comes in 31.5" for $1200.

Personally, 27" is more than enough for me, and it seems to be hard to find mid-size 4k screens. Either tiny (13") or giant (32"-48").

      • -2

I'm running a bdm43uc, which is the limit of my desk space. Less than 38" would be too small for gaming

      • +1

Got 2 of the the new 27” Ultrasharps. They are amazing. Would recommend.

  • can someone help me with how to buy ebay gift cards to get this? my maximum afterpay amt is $600. can't work out how to get ebay gift cards!!

  • It's a good monitor, with decent sound also.

this or tcl c825 mini led??

      • +1

How are they even comparable? You wanna use a 55"+ QLED TV for a monitor?

      • +1

I went in store to get a c825 from JB the other day and they said it is discontinued. Their suggestion is that a new updated version is coming. Maybe wait for that? I too want a smaller TV. This just maybe it.

  • +6

Shame there isn’t a way to enjoy the discount without resorting to this insane “buy now pay later” rubbish.

“Live slightly less outside your means with 15% off!”

    • +11

If it helps, with afterpay you can just pay each of the fortnightly payments all at once

    • +6

I mean, they're subsidising the discount, so I figure why not sign up for an account (seeing as they don't leave a credit enquiry against you) to enjoy the discount but then just pay it out in full the next day!

    • +7

I mean, you could just use afterpay and then pay off the balance in full instantly?

    • +4

You can pay it all off at once (just in case you didn't know).

    • I mean

    • +3

So in other words you'd rather a kick in the nuts than 15% off? Why do you care that AP runs sales like this? The retailers take the hit, not the buyers. In the end this is beneficial to buyers, and this being OB why wouldn't anyone take advantage of something like this?

      • +2

The retailers share the cost at best, they won’t be shouldering the cost of it alone.

I have no interest in taking the chance this affects my credit. They say “we don’t check”, but also “reserve the right”, no thanks.

        • +3

How would it affect your credit unless you are a complete tool to ruin your own credit?
I have used AP for 5 years, 1 missed payment on purpose, it never cost me anything though as I ran them and the cancelled the fees.
Probably 20K worth of orders, I can assure you my credit is fine but if you abuse it you're going to abuse any other credit stream too.
Don't go blaming lenders, blame the people who are not responsible to use them properly.

        • +5

They say “we don’t check”, but also “reserve the right”

Where do they say that? I can't find it in the Terms of Service

I did find the following though:

Is using Afterpay bad for my credit score?

Afterpay does not affect your credit score or credit rating. Your credit score can be impacted when somebody does a credit check on you or if you are reported as paying debts late; at Afterpay, we never do credit checks or report late payments. We don’t believe in preventing people from accessing Afterpay because they may have had an old debt from a long time ago. And we don’t believe that missing a payment with Afterpay should result in a bad credit history - especially when the average purchase is only around $150 (which may surprise you). Our main aim is always to help you spend responsibly, and we take a lot of steps to help ensure this, including pausing your account when you miss a payment.

          • +1

@HomeAlone: What you posted was possibly one of the most consumer friendly lending institutions. AP make their money on retailers, not their own customers.
Do the right thing and no one has an issue. Fact AP is stimulating the Australian economy can only be a good thing. It encourages healthy spending habits within reason and they have checks in place so one does not get too bent out of shape.
As I have posted before, look at how Cash Convertors used to do loans on items, if you missed payments you would pay a fee, the longer the loan the higher the fees, miss too many payments then you forfeit your item.
This is predatory behavior, I guess that's why we barely see their ads anymore?
AP got smart, understood there was a gap in the market and filled that to embrace a better way to be able to make purchases.
Let's take 1 example and I will let the sleeping dog lie, Laybys, some state a simple: you must make periodical payments, you must pay in full after 3 months, you must have paid of item in full to pick up.
Well AP is almost the same as layby but you get to take the item now and instead of 3 months, well you have 2 months to pay.
Latitude Pay does 10 weeks, Open Pay can be up to 6 months, Zip pay can be as long as you want but they will charge $8 per month till balance is paid.
Out of all 4, AP is the most popular by far furnishing purchases from far more vendors than the other 3, and there is a reason for AP's success.

Simply use it and don't abuse it policy comes to mind.

        • +1

If a $2000 credit check drops your rating it means your file is full of credit enquires already from cash converters right up to that rabbit money guy. Sounds like Afterpay isn't the issue but you are.

        • One purchase using AP will not affect your credit rating, unless you already have a poor credit score.
Understanding how your credit score is affected by credit agencies and your repayment history will.

    • +1

I paid with gift cards. Only need $1 for afterpay.

      Yes

Sort of, PS5 doesn't do VRR or 1440P yet so you wont take full advantage of the panel but it does not mean you wont get good images, just understand no Dolby Vision.

      • This is a 4K panel, not 1440p…

        • +1

A 4K panel should be able to do 1440P

In bold, really important for Series X owners, this mode enables 120HZ 1440P mode which there are games that take advantage of this mode.
BFV comes to mind and when playing online allows for less input lag, 4K 60HZ is not competitive online at all.
Dirt 5 uses this mode as does the newer Grid game I believe.

    • No it can't do 4K 4:4:4 @ 120hz without compression, which PS5 doesn't have.

  • +2

1230 for same panel as c1 is great value

But the Dolby vision cert missing is a concern for Xbox X 120hz Dolby vision

    But man so tempting 🤣

    • +2

Dolby Vision is literally a useless sticker that costs you money. The monitor can only do 10bit and not even 900nits 3% peak. What's Dolby Vision gonna have over HDR10?

  • +3

So cheap but the brightness sucks for desktop use. If you're in explorer and it's mostly white, the brightness can dip to under 100nits.

I'll wait for the Alienware Samsung OLED to go on special, has HDR 1000 instead of this which really struggles to go past 350nits, and Dell includes a 3 year warranty that covers burn in.

    • +1

Dark mode and Dark Reader on max contrast always, gotta utilise that OLED!

      • That's even worse with that automatic brightness adjustment. I'd rather have all white so it can't adjust/stay close to minimum.

        • Hmm, I don’t think I experience what you’re describing (on my C1). Plenty bright text in the minority of the screen that is white / coloured, only really goes dim if it recognises a page has been static for a while which just takes a Cmd + Tab to solve

    • The desktop on the Alienware will not be at 1000 nits. You’ll get 1000 nits on a 5% window for specular highlights probably.
Which is a good thing , because 1000 nits across the desktop would be like looking into the sun

  • +1

Can I use this as TV?

    • +2

      As in, broadcast tv?
You'll need a digital tuner/set top box with hdmi out.

      • -3

        Would it get 7mate?

        • +2

If you plugged in a device that can run apps like 7mate, for sure.

          But it's not built-in.

  • Is there a new model coming?
How does it compare to Dell? And Samsung 48” ?

    • +1

Not sure, but if it's the same panel as the C1, the C2 will be out in a few months.

  • I have this too, it serves both as gaming monitor and netflix/prime video. Image quality is superb as expected of a LG C1 panel, gaming is great as well. It's ABL behaviors are a bit annoying though. I paid significantly more :(

  • +2

Is it actually a monitor, text appears clear and sharp?
Can sit 30 cm from it?

Most TV makes poor monitor and you can’t sit close to it.

    • +1

30cm is gonna mess up your eyes. Sit at least a meter or more away

    • Most TV = LCD.

OLEDs all support 4:4:4 Chroma subsampling AFAIK. 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 is what makes the text look bad.

      • Even my $500 cheap LCD ("free bonus") supports 4:4:4 and RGB mode. There's literally no TV over $1000 that can't do RGB/4:4:4.

  • +11

I did some research on the Gigabyte one a while back. Here are my reasons to spend a bit more for an LG C1 48" (which I got for $1600 last year with 10% off gift cards) and avoid the Gigabyte. Hope this is helpful.
    - Gigabyte doesn't support eARC on either HDMI port, so keep in mind if you're planning to use with a receiver or sound bar or something like that
    - Gigabyte does have HDMI 2.1, but the bandwidth limited to 24gbps, vs 48gbps on the LG. That means no Chroma 4:4:4 @ 4K @ 120hz. You're gonna have to sacrifice color depth, resolution or refresh rate. It can't do all three at once and text in Windows can look bad with low color depth (PS5/XSX would have this same issue I'd assume?).
    - Gigabyte has only 2 HDMI ports vs 4 on the LG, though it does have DisplayPort 1.4, which the C1 does not (though this doesn't have enough bandwidth either, see problem above)
    - Gigabyte generally has less features, worse UI and remote than the LG

The Gigabyte is more of a monitor than a TV (obviously), but for the price difference, I'd recommend the C1 (or upcoming C2) over the Gigabyte.

    • what about c1 vs the recent Alienware ultra wide oled?

      • +1

I don't know much about that specific monitor, but I did come from an Acer Predator X34P ultrawide before the C1, and while I enjoyed the extra width for productivity and certain games, the lack of support for many games was frustrating and media consumption was annoying too (watching any streaming platforms in Windows is rubbish. If I were to choose again, I'd choose the C1 with its 16:9 ratio over Ultrawide any day. It just does everything very well, whereas the ultrawides are a "sometimes good, sometimes bad" option, IMO at least

    • Almost $500 saving… I went for the gigabyte. It might be what 10-20% worse quality and feature wise?

      • Yeah I'm really wondering if I keep the C1 I ordered today or go with this as my office monitor/tv/large screen.
$465 is the diff. Wonder if feature differences are worth it.

        • in my opinion the difference is worth it. you get the best of both worlds in one device.

          • +3

@Silent-zai: yeah I'm thinking long term if I upgrade from the C1 as a monitor to something else, the C1 would be more easily repurposed as a TV for the kids than the Aorus would be.

          • @Silent-zai: I agree. If I'm wanting what is (IMO) the best all-rounder screen + TV/media consumption device, you just can't beat the C1 right now. It does everything really well and being able to use it as a regular TV down the line is a nice added bonus

    • +1

Gigabyte has a built in KVM switch which is a pretty big deal for me

    • You're gonna have to sacrifice color depth, resolution or refresh rate.

What does this mean for PS5? Can't run games at 4K 120Hz ?

      • I assume that the PS5 would priorise resolution and refresh rate first, and color depth second, so you'd probably see it running at 4k, 120hz and Chroma 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 or something like that, meaning worse colors and potentially color banding, but I don't know exactly. I can say that I tried using a DP1.4 to HDMI 2.1 adapter cable to see how that functioned, and that's the result I got (similar bandwidth, 4K @ 120hz with Chroma 4:2:0, which looked garbage)

    • +3

I think you missed a key point about the Gigabyte being a monitor and the LG being a TV.

The LG being a TV goes through those annoying start up cycles during a cold bootr up and having those menus/hubs pop up, literally defeats fast PC boot up time. Where as the Gigabyte does not as it's your typical monitor.

In a PC environment that's like an ultra deal breaker for me and that's not said enough.

      • That is a valid point, but not something that's ever bothered me. It really depends what your setup/use case is. For me, I turn on my TV first, then my PC and my receiver (doing 5.1 through Windows) and the TV is always ready to go well before my PC is (even booting from an NVMe SSD). So yeah, it hasn't bothered me, but if you're constantly turning off and on the TV, it could be annoying.

Another option is to use the "Screen Off" function. When I'm walking away from my PC, I press the cog/settings button and that "Screen Off" function is in the shortlist. It's a handy way to turn off the screen without doing a full power cycle turn off. It snaps back on instantly too.

    • +1

Thank you for posting this, this was exactly the info I needed to make a decision. This Gigabyte monitor is not for me.

      • What was the clincher?

    • +1

Gigabyte does have HDMI 2.1, but the bandwidth limited to 24gbps, vs 48gbps on the LG. That means no Chroma 4:4:4 @ 4K @ 120hz.

Actually it does support 4K 120Hz 4:4:4 with DSC enabled, so 4:4:4 will work no problem on PC.

Windows can look bad with low color depth

Most monitors have 8-bit depth and you will not see the difference between 8 and 10-bit using majority of Windows applications. Extra bit depth really only helps with image/video editing and HDR.

      • Sorry, I should have been more specific in my terminology, instead of "color depth", I mean "Output Color Format" in the Nvidia Control Panel, where you can select RGB, Chroma 4:4:4, Chroma 4:2:2 and Chroma 4:2:0 (at least on mine). While it is 8bit most of the time, if I attempt to do 4K @ 120hz with an HDMI 2.0 cable or a DP1.4 to HDMI 2.1 cable, it won't work at all unless I drop the Chroma subsampling down, which generally presents with worse image quality.

        • +1

if I attempt to do 4K @ 120hz with an HDMI 2.0 cable or a DP1.4 to HDMI 2.1 cable, it won't work at all unless I drop the Chroma subsampling down

Why wouldn't you just use a HDMI 2.1 cable? Using DSC compression 4K 120hz 10-bit 4:4:4 is only 18 Gbps, which is well within this TV's 24 Gbps.

          https://www.murideo.com/uploads/5/2/9/0/52903137/hdmi_2.1_ba…

          • @Ryballs: Because I'm using an RTX 2070 Super (will upgrade to a 3xxx or 4xxx card when prices aren't so high) and it only has HDMI 2.0 (hence trying the DP1.4 to HDMI 2.1 converter cable). I use 4K @ 60hz when doing productivity and usually 1440P @ 120hz for gaming and that's worked fine so far.

I hadn't heard of DSC compression before, so if that works, then that could be a good option.

Overall, I just think the C1 is a better product than the Gigabyte for my use case and I think the features and capabilities of the C1 are worth the extra money over the Gigabyte. I think if I had bought the Gigabyte, there'd always be that niggling thought of "but I should have bought the C1", because of my use case: as a monitor, for PC gaming, some console gaming and also for movies/TV with a 5.1 receiver. If I were using it solely with a PC and not much else, then maybe the Gigabyte is ok. Just my opinion though, YMMV

  • +1

Here are my current settings on Displayport. Same for HDR or SDR. Very sharp.

    https://imgur.com/LQ5UpJ8

    • Thanks. Works well as you have a new GPU.
My Vega 64 supports DP 1.4 which I think can only handle 4K/60Hz/HDR10.

      • Yes to do 4k HDR justice for gaming or smooth general use it's nice to have a modern card.
Remember though most media is only in 24-60 fps. Kodi on a PC will map your media onto it nicely.
Netflix on a PC browser won't get anywhere near 4k. A media player like Amazon stick 4k will play into the HDMI though, so can use Apps on it.
I have one connected to this monitor and Netflix looks impressive when you choose a modern 4k HDR movie or TV series.

  • +2

I'm surprised nobody ever mentions lack of curved screen for this one, but after using ultrawide's that's the one thing holding me back from this monitor. It needs to be curved in my opinion.

It was enough to sway me over to a 49" Super Ultrawide instead for a few dollars more. Apples and oranges perhaps, but the curve point still applies.

    • +1

16:9 displays aren't really suited well to being curved tbh.

      • To be fair I haven't sat in front of one, so maybe it's not as bad as I think but I'm so used to having the screen not the left and right wrapping in towards but I don't think I could go back, even in the 16:9 footprint.

        • My curved-screen LG 34 is broken. Take care with your monitor. , it's really fragile especially while you moving or touching it.

BTW that's two different catalogs, this one focuses on the OLED pannel which is better for PS5 Xbox Gaming.

The super curved ultra-wide is really good for PC gaming.
          (you can take both :D)

    • curved screens are unnecessary.

    • I'd never buy a curved monitor TBH

  • +4

Pretty sure the HDMI 2.1 ports on this are bandwidth limited to 24gbps. So it's not actually a very good monitor to use for HDMI 2.1 devices that don't support DSC.

    ie. the PS5

Edit: Already been mentioned by someone else. :P

  • Glad we didn't discover this till after I grabbed the C1. The $400 price different may have given me pause

  • +1

This is a TV, not monitor….. OMG, this size is so huge.. Probably this size of monitor isn't for people sit in front of desk?

    • +1

You're right, I sit on the desk and have my 48" monitor mounted to the ceiling.

    • +1

43 is the right size for a monitor IMO.
Samsung the frame 43 is launching this week and it will be nice to use it as a monitor (mount to wall, one connect box will make for a clean setup!)
