960
DELL20P

The new Alienware AW3423DW monitor is now available on their eBay store, meaning it's available with the current 20% off Dell eBay promo. Good for those who missed getting the monitor with the couple different discounts that were available on launch. Note that the delivery date is estimated between 28 April and 6 May, which lines up with dates for orders on the Dell website.

I was lucky enough to have already received my Dell order, it's a 10/10 monitor in my books. The HDTVTest review went live earlier this morning, with the video being titled "The Best PC Gaming Monitor. PERIOD.", which sort of says it all.

Phew… so glad I got the first deal for this. Makes me feel like I saved 400 bux…

    • +6

Did Dell actually end up honouring the price or are you still waiting for delivery?

      • I paid on 10th of march money has been deducted from my account with an eta of 4th of may, you reckon I made it in or could they cancel order anytime

        • +2

I think they would have canceled by now

      • Oh was that a pricing error or something? I saw the 1st deal aswell, but there weren't any reviews at the time

      • I ordered for $1700 once they went live and it arrived two days later.

      • Yeah they already took my money. Expected delivery in May.

      • Yup, dell honoured the price! Mine is shipped already.

        • Ooo yeah, got notification mine has shipped today as well (with Star Track tracking number) - over a month earlier than expected.

          Awesome sauce…

    • dont think that price will ever be beaten until the successor to this is announced

      • +1

The Oz-bargainer in me wants this monitor but won't pay more than the cheapest price it's been $1500. So the wait will continue I guess till EOFY sales?

    • +3

as per usual Dell this will be 50% off in less then a year

      • +3

I doubt it. Not with the high end monitors. 20-30% off maybe

  • I'd get this , but my problem is i have a 50" ultrawide….are 50" ones on the horizon?

    • +1

I would like to imagine a samsung g9 variant with a QD-OLED panel is on the horizon this year.

      • +1

There's a G8 model on the way, same panel as this Alienware.

      • -1

You're going to need quite the active imagination I'm afraid. These are 34" for a reason, they're made up of off cuts from the TV screen production process pretty much.

        • Sorry where are you getting that info?

TV pixel density and monitor pixel density are entirely different. TVs are 55’ 4K while this is a 34’ 4K. As far as I know, entirely different mother sheet.

          • @Larsson: QD-Oled panels come in other sizes too mate, I can't remember where I read it but what i saw was that a motherglass sheet is 2200mm*2500mm, that usually yields 3x65" TV displays with some sites claiming the same sheet could also yield 2x55" and others claiming that the remnants were waste, something to do with which gen fab is used in the manufacturing process. Pretty sure I read that the monitors panels are offcuts from the 65" tv manufacturing process. Looking at the links below I'd guess if they could feasibly get between 3 - 6 of these 34" panels from the same sheet as the 65" tvs.

            https://www.samsungdisplay.com/eng/media/news/detail/ssdsNew…

            • @[Deactivated]: Yeah, but wasnt it also that at the moment the failure rate is to high to rely on just 2 or 3 per master? Which is why theyre doing the 34. Thatll get way better over time.

            • @[Deactivated]: The Alienware is 1440p screen resolution and TV'S are 4k though.

              • +2

@[Deactivated]: A panel is cut from a giant sheet of glass called motherglass. Think a giant window.

From this one piece of glass they make panels that go into TVs. The motherglass panel that Samsung uses can be cut up in a way that makes 3 65" panels with some left over glass. This left over glass can be cut into 6 32 inch panels or a few less 34 inch panels.

The pixels comes later this is just about the sheet of glass that makes up the screen.

                I hope that helps.

                • -1

                  @TheFyrd: I still don’t understand how 65’ 4K off cut can become a 34’ 4K monitor mate. Different ppi.

        • Not off cuts, but afaik this size does allow a lot of panels per master which improves yeild (or rather, compensates for worse yields)

    • I hear the size was a big part of keeping the price down, if they do, going to be expensive

  • Thoughts on if there'd be a 38" soon?

  • Is this worth triple the Dell 3422DWG

    • +6

Depends how highly you value the QD-OLED display really. For most users I would assume not worth the extra money, but if you've got money to burn and want the very best then this is it.

  • +1

Anyone think it may be better to get a 4k gaming monitor instead?

    • +6

personal preference, everyone that goes ultrawide swears they wont ever go back
iv never seen someone comment that lol. however id wait for the 38" version if they make one

      • +1

I switched back to standard 16:9 from ultrawide after 4 years. After a while I just got tired of bandwidth issues and incompatibility from USB C based resolutions/refresh. Also the choices you get to choose low latency, high colour accuracy and low price is simply unrivaled.

      • everyone that goes ultrawide swears they wont ever go back

I second this, having switched from 2 x 27" 1440p panels to an ultrawide 34" 3440 x 1440 + 27" 2560 x 1440 (they line up perfectly), this is really a great setup for both gaming and work.

Really good for editing documents because you can comfortably have two documents next to each other (whereas on a 16:9, it feels a bit cramped sideways), and really good for Excel since you can see more columns. If you do any photo / video work, it's great as well - e.g. in Lightroom, when I'm editing a 3:2 shot, there's more room on the side for your navigation, panels, tools…etc. - also easier to do a 2-up comparison…etc.

      • I've got a 29" 1440p ultrawide but I did replace it with a 16:9 43" 4K. Ultrawide bothered me for some content, especially media and applications so its really more ideal for gaming and cinema ratio movies

    • +6

I'd say if you have a console that might share the monitor then a non-ultrawide would make more sense

    • Love my Aw3821dw but some games like Elden Ring, don't natively support ultrawide resolutions. There are workarounds avail, but just a consideration.

    • 16:9 big screen, yep. Ultrawide is ok, but still a compromise imho. It's more about them cutting more panels from a sheet than it is about the end user

      • +1

Love ultrawide 38” for working and gaming. Can fit three windows side by side when working. Even better for gaming, really pulls you into the game. I upgraded from 34” UW to 38” last year and was surprised at the difference

So fingers crossed for an OLED 38” less than 2K, would be an instant buy from me

        • Does the 38 inch provide more vertical height?

I’d want to upgrade from the 34 inch but would want a little bit more verticality for the home office.

          • +1

@Muten-Roshi: Yes it does, I've got the AW3821DW which I came to after my Acer X35 was refunded under warranty.
It's very hard to go back to a 34 after the 38, it's just so much more space!

The res on the 38 is 3840x1600 compared to the 3440x1440 on the 34.

Having said that I also ordered the AW3423DW for $1500 with the previous deal, purely because if I can't stand the downsize to 34, I'm pretty sure I'd be able to resell to get my money back.

But I've got an LG C1 OLED as well which looks fantastic, so I'm still torn as to which I'll be keeping, the 34" QD OLED or the 38".

If they do release a 38" QD OLED you can bet yer ass I'll be jumping straight onto that though

            • @BargainMelbourne: I’ve read that the C1 exhibits motion blur, stuttering issues at 120 Hz and some people were feeling sick.
But then again, the equivalent Sony is way too expensive.
Panasonic is quite good, but I’m not sure about Oled, QDled, miniled or whatever they have.

              Yeah currently I have a 34inch ultrawide and a 32 inch 4k monitor.
I appreciate the extra 6cm vertical space for documents sometimes.

              • +1

@Muten-Roshi: It sounds like those suffering from motion blur and stuttering don't have their TV's set up correctly.
Mine's been flawless with my Nvidia Shield, PS5 and gaming PC.

That's on both the 48" and 55". I used the 48 for a little while as a monitor. While there was no stuttering or motion blur, I hated how text looked on it when sitting at arms length away from it. Went back to the 38 AW.

I think that's more an issue of WRGB panels than anything else though

            • @BargainMelbourne: I think if you can only have 1 screen go the 38" for the extra vertical real estate. If however, like me you have a second 1440p 27" monitor the 34" pairs up well with the 27" (same vertical height)

    • +1

I have a 1440p 21:9 ultrawide next to a 4k monitor and almost exclusively game on the ultrawide. I find it a better experience than slightly higher pixel density.
Plus 3440x1440 is way less resolution to drive than 3840x2160. So you can get higher refresh rates

      • Thanks. Wanted to get input from someone that has done both.

  • +1

Does this come with DC dimming or PWM dimming? If it is DC dimming, It is worth the price.

    • +1

It DC dimming of sorts, OLEDs have a slight brightness pulse with frame refreshes, but it's a vastly diminished effect compared to PWM. Very few people even notice it at all.

  • Do we know if the subpixel issue is getting fixed?

    • +1

It's not getting fixed, it's a design choice. Depending on the curvature of your eye, you'll either notice it a little on text or high contrast scenes, or you won't notice it all unless you go looking for it.

Inspect one of these before purchase, it's not necessarily a deal breaker. OS updates may also reduce the effect.

      • OS/driver updates is what I mean by a fix. Just wondering if it's something there will be actual efforts to mitigate or if it's just going to be another almost great but fundamentally flawed monitor from Samsung.

        • Even without an OS fix, it may not be a problem for you. Worth demoing the A95K or this to check that out.

Eventually Microsoft will step up, because this isn't the only unusual subpixel arrangement floating around these days.

    • Given that the sub-pixel layout is just a fact of the hardware, it's up to operating systems to add better software support.

Microsoft for instance could update their ClearType utility to support this sub-pixel layout. How soon, if ever, that happens, is anyone's guess.

If you buy this monitor, the colour fringing is just going to have to be part of your purchase decision.

  • +2

Going to wait for the Samsung version.

Much prefer to deal with Dell… but the Samsung version has an endgame stand imo.

    • +4

Good luck with their VRR support, that's all I'll say.

      • If nothing else it might push the price down on the Alienware

        • Doubt it. It won't compete with the Alienware for gaming. The Alienware will come down in price at some point, for sure, but I highly doubt it'll be influenced by Samsung's initial offering.

  • Woulda snagged it out for the first deal then used the price difference to get a good monitor arm.
    Such an awesome monitor.

  • +1
    • Can you also link the original coupon code?

      • it's expired. Just search ozb for the previous aw3423dw deal.

  • If you wanted to use an OLED TV for a monitor and a wide budget, which one would you go for?

Back in 2018 our family bought the first generation 'C' LG OLED TV but when we used the built in LG web-browser, text clarity was poor. Still an issue with OLED TVs nowadays?
Main reasoning would be to have something suitable for PS5 and a larger screen.

Something beside the upcoming Sony A95K

    • This year's LG TVs do not have 120Hz BFI, so that diminishes their value as gaming monitors IMO.

  • -1

Is this 4x better than xiaomi 34"?

    • +2

      Yes

      • +3

        It’s beyond 4x better lols

If you care about contrast and black levels - it’s basically infinitely better aha

        • +3

I think he was asking it to be smart, but it's the equivalent of asking if a colour TV is better than a black and white TV. If you don't care about colour then black and white is fine.

  • +2

I feel like if you have a 144hz 1440p / 120hz ultrawide its worth sitting on them for a while until the next batch of tech matures.

  • -3

I spoke to a few chat sales people to see if they would be able to match the $1500 price from the other week.

Best they could do is offer me $1960 which was a "phenomenal deal". Told them to get stuffed

  • +1

Key detail a lot are missing from the HDTVTest review as well as a lot of owners posts etc. The polariser they use on these QD-OLED's are terrible, they essentially make blacks look grey under any kind of ambient light, meaning that you'll only get the OLED blacks in a pitch black room

    • +2

The HDTVTest review mentioned the polariser turning blacks grey, so suggested it's best to use in a dark room. He's also got another video upcoming on some of the other issues the monitor has (likely to do with the sub-pixel layout causing colour fringing on text and at the desktop, among other things like lack of HDMI 2.1).

  • Anyone with ultrawide that plays competitive games ? Like rainbow 6 etc? Just wonder if it's easier or harder

    • I used to play Warzone a lot and it was helpful for peripherals. You get visibility on a lot more and you can turn up your FoV without it looking too strange.

But since it’s harder to drive, and from the YouTube review, 175 fps may not be good enough visual quality.
I have a 1080, and only got about 100 fps max.

      • Yeah, it seems a good visual monitor but not really for fps games , I have 240 fps now so hard to go back

    • Yep I play Warzone on an Acer Predator 34p and I love the ultrawide perspective. I'm getting around 160fps (3440x1440p) with mix of high/low settings. My rig is pretty beefy (AMD 5900X/6900XT) Something to keep in mind if you do jump up to 3440x1440p res. I was reading somewhere 3440x1440p is 3/4 of native 4k from memory??
I find it easier to play on my ultrawide compared to my 65" LG C1 OLED. Perhaps it's just me but I feel more connected sitting at my desk close to the screen rather than on the couch 6 feet away from the TV

      • (3440 x 1440) / (3840 x 2160) = 0.5972 so around 60% or 3/5.

  • Code not working unfortunately

    • REP to this gusy @thenewandy - copy/pasted his post from the other Dell 20% thread. This worked for me

I couldn't apply the coupon (kept getting an error about it not being able to be applied to my order).

Eventually, I managed to use it by checking out as guest. Then, the catchpa thing didn't work either, which was either because I was in private mode or using uBlock Origin.

So if you are having trouble, then try those things

    Too
    Much waste of money 💰

  • -5

more input lag than the LG oled tv lol

    lack of quality reviews

    still not even 4k

doesn't seem like a good long term investment

    • +2

Definitely consult with a financial advisor before investing in monitors.

      • forgot to mention not financial advice

    • +2

Lack of quality reviews?? HDTVTest is pretty much a guru on all things OLED. Although I can appreciate why people would wait for a second opinion (Hardware Unboxed or Rtings)

  • Anyone received any of these monitors yet? My ETA is May

    • I ordered mine on the 9th of March from the Dell website and received it on the 11th.

      • Guess you got in before the 1.5k sale on the 10th. Most I've seen ordered on the 10th are arriving early May.

        • -5

Yup I got one for 1.7k the day before. Also have a 1.5k order that I plan to selling for a friend for 1.7k once it arrives. Best of both worlds.

  • Struggling to resist the urge to buy one of these - but I have a CX48 as my current monitor so it's hard to justify

    • As do I, still bought one anyway. Dewit.

  • +1

Update, just got the SMS that my order has shipped via startrack. ETA is tomorrow :)

    • Same.

      • Ah I'm in the wrong thread, lol. I bought from the Dell store at 1500
