I bought this when it was posted in Feb. Pretty happy with it so far but I'm not a heavy user.
First time I've had a IPS screen & backlit keyboard which is so much better.

As the Op said in the last deal this comes with a US power cord. So you will need either an AU Clover Leaf Power Lead like this ($9.85 del) or an adaptor.
I think this is the same one @Bunnings for $5.50 but check the connection yourself before buying.

    • Damn, mine doesn't arrive until next week!

      • When did you order it?

Just noticed JB have a 2 metre clover leaf power cord for $9.98.

I just got burned with an Asus Vivobook 14. All the previous models for several years had expandable RAM, but not the 2021 model. All the reviews say the Vivobook 14 has expandable RAM, but in reality it doesn't. Accordingly, I'd be careful buying a laptop with the above description with the expectation that a RAM slot is "free". That being said, this very recent review that specifies that same CPU does seem to confirm it: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/customer-reviews/R3LUS9RFY5AVTC…

    nothing to dislike!
I installed another 8GB of DDR4 (total is now 12GB) and changed the M2 2280 SSD to a 1TB and this laptop is excellent value for money.

    • Haha that's my review :D

I bought two of these around a month ago and can confirm that the RAM is upgradeable. I installed a stick of this Crucial RAM in each and the BIOS correctly identified 12GB. The operating systems (both Windows and Linux), however, only detect 10GB which is weird. I suspect 2GB is being reserved for the iGPU, but it could also be an incompatibility. I'm not bothered enough to look into it.

The only other annoyance is that the USB C port doesn't appear to either charge or display out (it has a full-size HDMI). Either way, it's a good machine for the price.

    • Have you tried to replace the original 4 GB RAM with 2 x 8GB RAM you bought? Wonder if the system can detect 16GB RAM in total?

      • +5

        Original 4gb is soldered

    • I just tried it with my dell d6000 USBC dock and it can run my 2x 1440p screens fine. Laptop display has been turned off though.

This is a display link dock though

Just checked task manager and it says 2gb reserved for dedicated GPU memory as I also have an extra 8gb stick of ram

Can't see anything in BIOS to alter how much is reserved unless there is a way to see advanced settings in this BIOS which might let us alter

  • This is a great price for a WIFI 6, USB-C port, fingerprint reader, backlit keyboard, BT 5.1, upgradeable RAM and SSD,
On the 6th photo down, it states "USB-C 3.2- 2 USB-C ports" I only see one USB-C port in the photos.
Also does this mean that you can charge the laptop through the USB-C port?

Read the post above yours for the answer to your question

      • Yeah I noticed it after I posted it, (poetry)

  • I have this laptop bought from last deal.
Its a very good laptop for the price but few things to consider.
    1. Runs warm. Laptop quickly gets warm when on your lap (left side) something I barely notice when using any other laptop. I think it's due to poor/cheap cooling system.
    2. The catch. If you plan to upgrade the ram and ssd by spending few hundreds then I would rather buy something else with better cooling and 8gb 512 ssd base spec.

    • +1

@senthil-2021 But you can upgrade the SSD to a Crucial 1TB for $108 and an extra 8GB Crucial DDR4 3200 RAM $45
      that's only an extra $153 for a 12GB RAM 1TB SSD laptop, not "a few hundred $$$"!
This would still be better than the "8gb 512 ssd base spec" that you mentioned.

    • Another stick of RAM is like 30 bucks from amazon mate just add it to cart when you order

      • Lame question but what do I search for to get the correct RAM? 4GB DDR4 SODIMM….?

        • Yep. Not sure what speed the soldered RAM operates at though… It's probably only 2400mhz unfortunately but you might want to look it up so you don't buy a stick that's slower (it would still work, but you'd rather not limit your RAM speed)

          • @scottySK: If the original 4gb RAM is running at 2400mhz, would it be better or worse off if a higher frequency RAM is installed as the second ram i.e. the 3200mhz linked above?

~edit. So the original SSD is a 2.5" drive. There is an additional slot for m.2 ssd too? Cant find the technical specifications of this laptop on Acer website.

            Thx

@LurvinOZB: I don't own this laptop. Was shopping for a friend. A quick search implied there was an empty 2.5 inch bay for you to add storage into.

With memory, higher clocked RAM will operate at the lower clock of the soldered RAM, so you're probably best to just match speeds so you're not spending extra $$ for nothing

            • +1

              @LurvinOZB: original 128GB is a HYNIX NVME M2 SSD
              2.5" bay is empty

              I put in 8GB DDR4 3200 in mine

              • @daft009: Thanks both.

                Pricing went up I believe.

                • +1

@LurvinOZB: Was $542ish when I posted it as a deal back in Feb. Will come down again

                  • @daft009: yea saw past prices and the lowest was $300+ I think. That post was sold out pretty fast. Its an awesome deal tbh. Looks like the school laptop can wait for a little while more =)

How does the warranty work for imported machines like these from Amazon? Can it be repaired by local Acer?

    • +3

It's purchased via Amazon AU, they fall under Aus Consumer Law which means like any other store in Aus they have to deal with warranty claims.

This laptop runs warm in 10 minutes. the build quality is ok, the screen is nice enough. The speakers face down, so you can't hear the treble very well.

Hmm I'm starting to doubt the accuracy of camelcamelcamel now as it doesn't show the correct price tracking for this product and it's not the first time I've had my doubts

    • It says it's only tracked the 3rd party seller but it's weird that it's now dropped to the Amazon selling price.
