What Is Something You'll Never Buy or a Place You'll Never Shop at Based Purely on Their Advertising Campaign?

I despise the Vodaphone ad with that vapid jerk "Dylan" seemingly on every commercial break to the point I will never get a vodaphone plan.

Will never buy Red Bull because I hate their ads.

Will never buy anything Jo Silvagni advertises because I dont like her giant forehead and mouth and tiny beady little eyes.

Robins Kitchens can blow a goat.

Never get a haircut at Stefans because of his old ads on Bert Newton with his silly jingle and pink powerboat.

And finally CITY TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: forgot makin mattresses with the stupid woman saying “yes Mr Harvey we sell them you don’t”.

We all wake up on the wrong side of the bed today and choose grumpy?!?

    • +16

      Haters gonna hate

Poor Jo, she didn't choose her looks.. :(

        • +10

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

        • +19

Aye, and you chose to spout bollocks on the internet. The main difference is she gets paid to do it. What's your excuse?

      • +10

Jo Silvagni was stunning and still is stunning at this age.

    • +18

Nick Scali. If they can afford to blow that much on advertising, the furniture is surely overpriced.

      • +14

And political parties on YouTube: You've annoyed me, now I definitely won't vote for you!

        • +22

Lets be honest. Clive Palmer's ads are a great way to stimulate the economy though, even if he gets zero return on it (due to pissing everyone off with them).

Had a mate that worked for one of the the major TV corporations, during the election season if they were ever under their budget KPI's and had spare ad slots they'd go straight to Palmer's team, up the price for the slot by 100% and ask if the UAP wanted it.

They were never turned down by Palmer's marketing team, not once. Turns out the team weren't necessarily the most switched on in terms of value for money, they had a budget to spend and they spent it.. The TV corporation met all their KPI's. He relished the opportunity to undermine their campaign.

          • +6

@Drakesy: He gets preference votes for LNP, leading to a LNP government, which offsets all the advertising stimulus.

            • +2

@Fobsessive: But lets be honest, those votes were always going to the coalition.
If you're voting for the UAP Labor wouldn't be in your crosshairs.

              • +2

@Drakesy: True, however Clive's scare campaign could flip undecided voters from Labor to LNP

            • @Fobsessive: The preferential voting system doesn't allow parties to give other parties their votes. They can only give voters a recommendation on their "how to vote" cards. Who each voter then preferences is the individual voters choice, not the parties.

              • +1

@Tonyh87: ""Even if people didn’t explicitly take out his message as in 'vote United Australia Party' … the sheer weight of advertising impacted people’s perceptions of Labor in a very negative fashion.

"We will probably look back on this and say $60 million didn’t buy him a seat, and that’s an epic fail, but I would strongly argue he was the most effective lobbying group for the Liberal Party.""

                https://www.afr.com/companies/media-and-marketing/how-palmer…

                • @Fobsessive: Sorry, I was thinking that your comment was implying that votes for the UAP would be handed to the LNP

            • @Fobsessive: only if you follow their how to vote cards

not saying it would be a good idea but you could vote UAP>Greens>Ind>Labor>LNP and LNP would be last on the preferences

          • @Drakesy: Is that the guys where we taxpayers paid for redundancy for 100s of his workers after he refuse to pay them based on technicality. Not so poor anymore

            • @snajper: Yep,
Something something apparent transferral of funds, gutting one company and sending it out of business and getting the taxpayer to foot the bill while the UAP got a cash injection/donation.

His accountant can cook the books well.

        • +1

Creators generally don’t get paid if the ad is skipped. I let Palmer ads run with the sound off. There is a current one that features “volunteers”. Such a rent a crowd he has got going. Next Government needs to turn the screws on him to stop him getting even wealthier.

          • +1

@yokel: Same, I leave the ads on with sound off and I go do something else for 3mins

      • They arent that overpriced compared to some other mobs though. Surely better quality than the famous 4 letter brand products at similar price range.

        • +1

Have you seen Nick Scali prices? They aren't anywhere near IKEA. Furniture obviously better but still

          • +1

            @Jackson:

Have you seen Nick Scali prices?

Yeap. Own couple of tables and set of chairs. Lot better quality in my experience.

      • +1

        Not just overpriced either.
A friend of mine who is a furniture manufacturer tradie advised that the quality is something less than desirable.
Every second week, there's a 'SALE ON'

      • -1

That's because Nick Scali is just a front for Italian Mafia money laundering

    • +6

Possibly OP is still salty about getting done in by the Saints last night?

  • +13

    username sorta explains it.

  • +59

I don't allow an ad campaign to dictate what I buy, doesn't matter how good or bad they are.

I buy products because they fit my needs and/or are of good value.

    • +8

Exactly. Or more importantly, what the company actually stand for. For example it's all well and good for Nike and other western companies to boycott Russia because of war but they also use child/slave labour to make their products. It's very difficult for average consumer to know this because of how little we know about manufacturing and supply chains.

      • Yeah but them Air Max 90s ain't gonna make themselves ya get me?

  • +19

Considering the number of ads out there.

OP seems to make decisions based on those feelings.

OP would be a sucker for the “good” ads. Just what the marketing people want.

    • Good ads is an oxymoron

      • +3

        That was the point.

      • I don't mind some ads. Most try too hard or not hard enough. That being said 'some' is approx 0.01% in this case.

        • Anyone remember "Rugs a Million" ?
Apparently they are still (barely) alive as a business in Australia.

      • Think it depends on ad.

Sorry, but I feel (generally) Ads in AUS are not to the level I have had seen in India.
“Ye fevicol ka majboot jod hai, tootega nahi”.
        “Dhara dhara, shuddh dhara”.
“Desh ka namak, TATA Namak”. I bet this ad to date has affected many and this is the reason your see “Tata Namak (salt)” now in coles. Despite salt is just Salt with varying iodine level.

Guess Vodafone should introduce ZooZoos again.

        • OMG! So true.. I remember the "Walk when you Talk' advert there….. Still cracks me up!

    • +1

      OP need a Crimsafe

  • +22

National Tiles radio ad is very annoying. I change the station when it comes on.

Not a fan of tv commercials featuring interracial couples as they are invariably a white man with an asian woman. It's always this mix. Sick of seeing it everywhere.

    • +22

interracial couples as they are invariably a white man with an asian woman. It's always this mix. Sick of seeing it everywhere.

      that's because it is everywhere

    • i absolutely hate the National tile ads, but i find their tile range to be much better that Beaumount tiles which has those awful ads where they're pulled stock photos of people with stupid facsal expressions and their product placement in the block. Also BT charge you for pickup up tiles from their warehouse (WTF). Whereas you can wait about a week for it to be delivered to the store you order from ( as no cost)

    • +9

      “National Tiiiiiiles”

I actually like it, dunno why.

      • +6

Hellooooooooooooooo, Frank Walker from National Tiles. This Sunday only…………

        • Damnit, came to post this and was beaten to it, lmao

        • +2

Hellooooooooooooooo, Frank Walker and I recently had a lobotomyyyyyyyyyy….

    • +1

I hate the voiceover guy for National Tiles as well. He's so whiney and I change the radio station as well.

    • +1

I don't think I've ever heard an actual ad, but This would guarantee that I'd shop there.

    • Interracial families in ads 100% make sense from an advertisers point of view as it directly 'reaches' larger swathes of society. IE if its just a European mum and dad or an Asian mum and dad it feels less relatable for the other groups. Put them together and you have much broader reach. Make $ sense

    • +1

Speaking of, I swear I'm noticing more Asians in advertisements lately. Like a lot. Not sure if it's just my feed or if others are noticing it too. Fwiw I'm Asian.

    • My sister always laughed to the National Tiles ad on radio. We found it funny.

  • +13

Advertising is a scourge on society; I try to avoid it whenever possible. I also boycott many places due to forced advertising.

    • Agree with this to some extent. We're so desensitised to excessive advertising in public places. Many areas look so crap with huge billboards everywhere.

    • I hear what you are saying but there are so many things we all use that rely on advertising to exist. This website being one of them (I think?) - the money from advertising keeps it going.

I definitely benefit from advertising, as many platforms I use are kept alive by the income it generates - however I also try to avoid it.

  • +19

I would never buy a Jeep

    • What about a Hilux?

      • No. Not because of their advertising campaign. But because every Hilux I have driven I really didn't like it. Seats were uncomfortable, seats didn't go back far enough, not enough visibility, etc.

        • But but but… it's a Hilux…

    • +12

yeah but most people hate Jeep's because they are unreliable, untrustworthy pieces of crap rather than due to the advertising.

        • LOL and yet again this year without fail Jeep is once again in the Top 5 of the most unreliable car brands. Stuns me how anyone nowadays could buy one, 10 seconds on a search engine should tell anyone to steer clear.

          • +3

@gromit: Yup. My brother in law bought one. I asked him why he needed a V8 Jeep.

"To tow the caravan" he replied.

            "OK" I said.

He doesn't actually have a caravan.

            Perfect Jeep customer…

            • @kale chips suck: that's what they aim for, they hope to capture people that don't do their homework. It is interesting that it is always the American brands that are at the bottom, this year the 3 most unreliable are Jeep, Tesla and Lincoln.

    • Somebody still buys them! Bet Stellantis is going broke eventually!

    • +1

Agree. I'd never download a car.

  • +16

I don't look for reasons to get offended. I just tune out if I don't like something.

    • +3

Tell me more of this superpower…

    • I read OzBargain during ad breaks.

  • +5

    I love your passion.

  • +2

    kelly country
    2 suits for 99 bucks

    • That's cheap! Why haven't I seen any deals on OzB?

  • +7

Anyone here old enough to remember…

    "… 2…. 230…. 230 Brunswick St…. 230 Brunswick St… Fitzroy.. "

    • That was friggin painful that ad. 1986 apparently

YouTube link for any Victorians that want a trip down memory lane.

      • +4

good grief, why did i click on that link???? Repressed memories coming back to haunt me.

      • It is bloody insane for that price in 1986. How many can afford it.

        • +1

$1795 in 1986 would apparently be $5255 now - adjusted for inflation. So weird that this is something that you'd advertise on television. Like, as if there was someone with five grand burning a hole in their pocket as they sit down to watch Neighbours when all of a sudden this abomination of a commercial comes and and they go, "Oh shit, that's what I can spend it on, a (profanity) ugly coat!"

    • 320 Brunswick Street is now a pizza joint. Erich Planinsek moved into real estate instead. It seems there’s more money to be made selling property these days than fur coats. Or should I say more money to be made selling pizzas?

    • And yet after all these years you still remember that business' address!

Some ads are very deliberately irritating so they are remembered (remember Madge, that penetrating nasal voice, and Palmoliive dishwashing liquid?). Jingles in particular are designed to become earworms.

And don't say "but I would never buy there because I was irritated" either. Brains don't work like that - the semi-conscious memery persists long after the irritation has faded.

  • +9

What pisses me off is trailers and cross promotion for other shows when watching sport on TV, like during the winter Olympics having to see the same trailer for married at first sight with its faux manufactured drama every single #$%^& ad break, and then the poor commentators being forced to talk about that sh1t as well

    • +10

Even worse is the number of vapid idiots that watch and enjoy manufactured drama.

    • +1

It's kind of handy though, the last ad before the program comes back on is alway a cross promotion for another show on the network. So if it's like a warning system to start paying attention to the TV again. I haven't actually watched commercial TV since like 1999 so maybe things have changed since then.

  • +14

    youi ads
plus the ad for the buying used cars online, what a terrible way to buy a used car. ( refuse to remember the name of the company)

does politician ads count? palmer united party has leached onto youtube ads

    • +3

Palmer had a 22min ad on YouTube at one stage. Hilarious

      • +8

        Freedom of speech! (Comments disabled)

      • I always wonder how much this must cost, it can't be cheap surely.

    • +2

      Cars24

I agree with you - why anybody would want to buy a used car online is beyond me.

A new car - maybe.. but used… never

      • thanks for finding the name.

      • I bought a used car online through easyauto123, that was shipped from SA to NSW. Couldn't be happier with the purchase, the price I got was 20% lower than local deaIers here plus have never been a fan of haggling at dealers. Adoption takes time and one day used cars sales will be predominantly online whether you like it or not.

  • +2

    Thanks for the update.

    • +1

I'm not familiar with that ad or company. Would you care to elaborate?

      • +1

Sorry I cant, I've been in therapy to help me forget it…

  • +11

iSelect because of that stupid man from 10 years ago and compare the market because of that stupid meerkat.

    • +4

The ads kinda cute but you know you are going to be harassed mercilessly by them

      • +7

I hope you mean the meerkat ones, because I didn't find the iSelect ones cute at all, just them trying to be weird/awkward funny with an incompetent/imbecile spokesperson…why that would instil confidence in a company is beyond me…

        • +1

He also bullied the call centre staff in the ads. Although so do the meerkats. What is wrong with that industry

      • They still haven't worked out how to block the phone number 0412345678, so someone gets a lot of calls meant for me 😁
