What Is Something You'll Never Buy or a Place You'll Never Shop at Based Purely on Their Advertising Campaign?

I despise the Vodaphone ad with that vapid jerk "Dylan" seemingly on every commercial break to the point I will never get a vodaphone plan.

Will never buy Red Bull because I hate their ads.

Will never buy anything Jo Silvagni advertises because I dont like her giant forehead and mouth and tiny beady little eyes.

Robins Kitchens can blow a goat.

Never get a haircut at Stefans because of his old ads on Bert Newton with his silly jingle and pink powerboat.

And finally CITY TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: forgot makin mattresses with the stupid woman saying “yes Mr Harvey we sell them you don’t”.

Do Red Bull still do those animated ads?

    • Yeah, I get a Red Bull ad on YouTube every now and then. Same style of ad.

      • Nice. I always thought they were a bit cute.

Don't really see many ads these days using streaming primarily. Maybe when I go to the cinemas.

    slow news day?

  • +1

Thirsty Camel…..can't stand their ads on the radio

  • +2

I really don't want to buy anything from Kogan, so far so good.

    • Generally it's a mistake people only make once…

  • +2

Hate the Step One ads - Do like the underwear though

  • The man shake ad

    • +3

But Karen lost 76kg on the lady shake so there is that.

      • +1

….and a gastric sleeve. All you can get is that pouch crap for a while after having it done apparently.

  • +4

I was going to say Harvey Norman, primarily for other well-known reasons, but I actually find their multiple-page newspaper ad 'supplements' great for lighting the fire.

    • Aren’t they lined with plastic lmao

    • +2

Or seeing Harvey being a fool on ACA, whining "why aren't people buying from local businesses". Whilst he's happy to make exorbitant profits selling online and overseas. I hope he goes bankrupt.

      • -2

I hope he gets a slow painful cancer….

  • +7

The house never ending closing down sale

  • actually most products I see advertised

if they need to advertise, it's not popular word-of-mouth - so I won't want it

when we got lots of restaurant ad brochures in our letterbox, I'd know not to bother going there

and apparently an advertising maxim is 'if you got nothing to say - set it to dancing!'

so when I see TV ads with everyone dancing, that tells me there's nothing I want there.

    • I used to do this with popular shows, assuming they must be dumb. Turns out some of them were really good!

  • +9

The ads that really GRIND MY GEARS are the dumb 1-2 minute ads with a "isn't life a beautiful mess" type theme and some sentimental song playing then the logo for whatever bank/insurance agency at the end, i.e. the current Westpac ad they've been playing the last year or so.

    • +2

what is money for if not for this

    • +1

      Never saw that ad before.
And I wish the (profanity) I never watched it.

    • I agree 100%, here's the University of New England one I have been whingeing about for years and they're still playing it on tv.

Richmond Tigers because of this post.

In all seriousness, I'm unlikely to buy from brands that use social media influencers because I find it gross that these people get free products and are paid to do fake reviews

  • +4

    National Thaiiiiiiiiiii-als

  • +8

Not shopping but i will never vote for Craig Kelly thanks to his ads bombarding us the last few months. Not that i would anyways but still it makes me mad every time i see one of his billboards.

    • +4

Palmer got out of paying his workers entitlements and it still filthy rich, it’s absolutely disgusting

    • Sometimes you get a YouTube "ad" for this party and it actually has a duration of 30 minutes.

    • +1

More ways of getting ads than just internets….

  • +5

    But….. Wait!!!! Theres…. More!!!!!

Althoough it never ceases to amaze me that all the ads for life insurance tell you how great the benefits to you it are, and that these are on every ad break on every channel (yep even SBS) during day time (and now starting in night time)

The benefis being so great only if you are the recipient of all the ad dollars that this company and associated comparison sites spend. Namely the media companies.

    • +3

Honey, before we go on this trip, there's one simple thing we should do..

      • +1

Honey, I've had a serious think, and I think it's time to get REAL LIFE INSURANCE

  • +6

That stupid Door Dash add. "I Door Dash this, I Door Dash that, I even doordash this". Like just f off my tv.

    • +2

Agreed. Will it KILL you to get out of the house once in a while.

      • Corona is out there.

  • +5

"hallooowwwww.. Frank Walker from National Tyyyylllleeeeeeesssss……."
I switch radio stations every time this ad comes on.

    • +2

I moved states to get away from him… Now he is on the radio up here as well…

      • +7

I feel like the name having "national" in it may have been helpful to pay attention to there.

        • I had a good 5 or 6 years up here before the "radio ad" went national (It was called "National" but was wholly based in and around Melbourne)

And I remember when it was only "Bargain Tiles", until that company went arse up and Frank owed a lot of people a lot of money. "National tiles" was a spin off to this and was fronted by his daughter and not Frank because it's a bad look owing money to people and starting up exactly the same business as the one that owed a lot of money.

    • ha I always smirk at those ads

  • +21

Harvey Norman, after the fear campaign and introducing GST on every purchase overseas.

  • +7

I will never vote UAP because of their ads (and everything else). Does that count?

    • Terrible ads that appeal to the lowest terrible denominator.

  • +1

Vodaphone - they screwed back over about 15yrs ago and i vowed never to use them again

Plant based meat - just so wrong.

  • +13

    The Liberal Party

  • Bellisimo mattresses. The one with the song that sounds like a Nick Cave parody. It's terrible. Every time I am in the car and hear it, I just want to tear the radio out of the car and hurl it out the window.

    • +1

'My back was aching I was tired all the week. What I would give for just one night of restful sleep'?

That song sounds more like a country and western song to me if that's what you are referring to.

I actually love it. It comes on at the same time every single day on my ride home from work. It's part of me now.

  • +3

What about the opposite - have you ever wanted to check out a place because of exactly how catchy/iconic their ads were?

    "Megalo, megalo, megalo!"

    • +2

Zero places for me. Not impacted by mainstream marketing.
      Only impacted by ozbargain deals

    • Oddly enough I like the Google ad with the black chick going grocery shopping for her elderly asian neighbour. I found it quite endearing. But I'm already deep into the Google ecosystem so they're just preaching to the converted.

The Bathurst 3000/sports betting pages because of that (profanity) whiny, literally sniveling Spotify ad.

I would rather go deaf, and I got so mad that I paid for Spotify Premium.

  • I will never deal with IMB Bank. Here in Canberra their ads are on every single ad break (or so it seems). Enough already!

  • +2

RUOK OP? Bloody hell, it's a personal choice to be this angry at everything.

(That being said, ME bank ads at the start of movies…omg)

The Good Guys. Those ads 20+ years ago were horrific. A friend of mine worked there. I would ask him which appliance are you playing today?

    • -1

Why don’t you come in and see the good good good guys? Sorry I have a stutter.

  • +21

    Gilette

    • You would love any speaker test by Erfon Elijah on YouTube 😂

    • +6

Agreed! I don't like being told that I have toxic masculinity because I talk to attractive women :P

      • +2

Block-quopte I didn't feel personally attacked by that campaign.

Block-quopteIf you're upset by the ad then you're exactly the person it was targeted at.

I didn't feel personally attacked because I'm certainly not the type of bloke that the ad portrayed. It rubbed me up the wrong way because I felt that it tarred all men with the same brush in some places like all the guys lined up behind their BBQ's slowly droning out "Boys will be boys" like some kind delayed idiot.

        • -4

ladbroke betting - the ads shit me. People in pubs bonding or mates bonding over betting- get (profanity) with the manipulation. I understand if your lonely it would be nice for people be caught in the moment with you and you shouting a round or food but that isnt the reality.

    • +10

Could probably group that to be all gambling ads on tv. So out of touch with reality.

      • +2

Agreed. Literally every betting ad is horrid and prolific.

      • All TV ads are so out of touch with reality.

    • +1

The Tom Waterhouse ones were worse.

  • +5

Anything from Amazon. I know it's a very popular marketplace here on OzBargain, but I think if someone is rich enough to be launching giant dildos into space just so they can grow their e-peen then they don't need me throwing any more cash their way. Other people may will have a different opinion, but that's okay and they're welcome to choose who they hand their hard-earned to.

    Netflix

    • +1

Yeah but you're paying for them lol

      • +1

Plex is free and the other 2 cheap as chips via India VPN ozbargain method.

    • YouTube premium still has ads depending on what you watch. Seems like so many of them are sponsored by skillshare. Still don't know what it is…

  • +3

    Grammarly. Excessive YT ads.

  • +2

Oh my god I'm so sick of Dylan Vodafone!

  • What’s a commercial break?

  • +2

Any radio ad that uses a police siren. They know exactly what they're doing and they still do it.

  • +1

    wynston with a y blinds.

    hate their ads.

also anything that plays before youtube.

  • +1

    Doors Plus

  • Global Shop Direct - don't get caught by them. They base profit on postage - sell junk cheap, give a free one with it, charge plus $9.99 postage. Refund product price only.

    • Not only that, you usually have to pay for the shipping to return it!

  • +1

Samsung - just because their ads annoyed me a lot during the Australian open.

Didn't buy a Mazda in the past due to the zoom zoom ad campaign

  • +4

If I see something heavily marketed, I automatically assume the product is quite likely to be inflated in price due to their high marketting fees.

  • Kimmy's Dad on the Crimsafe radio ads. Most annoying, condescending voice around. Thankfully I haven't heard them for a while now.

Sam bloke does the Aldi adverts and a few others. Can't help but immediately associate the voice with Kimmy's Dad.

  • +2

Credit Union, for encouraging min wage fast food workers into getting a personal loan to buy a fancy sports car, just so they can look 'cooler' than the customer.

  • +1

That ad a few years back for Suncorp, that had that annoying 10yr old girl called Sunny. God damn that ad played for a good six months straight, every ad break. It was non stop.

Because of that, I would never go anywhere near suncorp or use their services. Even though she's no longer, I still think of that little sh$tt and that annoying song when I see anything Suncorp related.
