Asus ROG Flow Z13 13.4" FHD Touchscreen Gaming Tablet: RTX 3050 Ti, Intel i9-12900H $2889 (Was $3399) + Ship / $0 C&C @ JB Hi-Fi

210

Technically a deal but I am undecided/tempted about this device. Thoughts?
Z13, or a basic spec new XPS 15 i7 12700 for ~ $2750 from the https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/695703 ?
Z13 has the better specs, there is also an i7 and i5 version but with less storage and GTX 3050.
Or, wait until May/June when Lenovo and other brands start releasing their intel 12 Gen models?

Will not be used for gaming but more for music production and I wanted to try it for gigging, so the portability of the Z13 is attractive, and reportedly the low fan noise compared to the loud and hot stories I keep hearing about the XPS.

Do people love their XPS? Does anyone own a Z13 and recommend it?

Probably the smart thing to do is wait until all brands are competing and go for a Thinkpad X1 or Legion? Z13 is too niche and so may likely only reduce further in price.

But like Veruca Salt said, "Hey, Daddy, I want an Oompa Loompa! I want you to get me an Oompa Loompa right away!"

Also I suppose Cash Rewards for Gift Card cashback.

    3050 lol

It’s 13’ and sits at 1.2kg. If you are comparing it to those 2.5kg+ 16’ laptops you are dead wrong.

Not to mention that no new 12900H laptops are any cheap in the first place.

  • -5

    $2900 for a 3050Ti. Lol no deal.

Is this meant to be a deal post or a forum post asking the community for help on picking a laptop?

    • +17

Bit unfair, Z13 has unique point of difference from standard laptop, It's bleeding edge and more like a surface pro, which ain't cheap.
Every other retailer at this time ~$3300, so it's genuine deal.
XPS is less spec for more $$$ so simply pointing out the GPU is not the whole picture.
I could get a chunky garish plasticky laptop with a 3080ti for this price. Doesn't tell the whole story.

      • +6

Fair enough. I guess the other features potentially balance out the lackluster GPU.

        I revoked my neg.

        • +1

I probably should have provided more details about it in the description instead of just assuming people knew what it was.
This thing is a hard sell, hence me asking for opinions vs more conventional laptops.

      • Please let me know where can you get a 3080Ti laptop sub $3000?

      • -3

I bought the legion 7i 2021 version with full aluminium build, RBG per key and bottom panel with an 3080 16gb 165w TGP for 2.8k.
Legion 7 is arguably one of the best laptops from 2021, quicker response time on the 2k 165hz screen and best in class cooling (vapour chamber) for the same cost as this piece of garbage 3050ti.

This is basically the world's only gaming tablet with a built in RTX 3050Ti and an Alder Lake i9. You can't really compare this to other run of the mill gaming laptops.

  • Hmm i wonder how well is this cooled. has awesome aesthetics.

  • -3

At almost $3k should come with a 3080!

    • +1

You will not be able to cool that efficiently with this form factor. That thing blows out too much heat.

    • +1

      This is 13' and 1.2kg.

You are out of your mind if you think this can take anything more than a 3050/ti. Especially with the 12900H built in.

      • haha being ozbargainer always think of the best specs with min prices! So how will this thing perform if playing AAA titles?

        • It will run, but dont expect 60fps except on a combination of min and medium settings. The 3050/ti in here is capped at 35+5w which really doesnt do it much favor. Much better than any iGPU -even rdna 2 or the mx series of chips but thats not saying much is it.

For anyone looking to buy this ask for a better deal.

My local JB Hi Fi is happy to do $2680.

Is a gaming touchscreen tablet really necessary though? I don’t see it filling many niches particularly with thermals 3-4 years down the line. At $2889, it’s not bang for buck, you’re not getting the same level of build quality, display quality, or performance that you can with non-tablet alternatives.

Whether or not a touchscreen is necessary is up to the user though, though I haven’t heard of many creative professionals using them since they’re flimsy.

    • Agree hence my upvote, although I would add a silent gaming laptop in the 13 inch form factor with a MUX switch fits the criteria for many grad students/professionals who needs portability for work plus the ability to hook up to a gaming monitor at home.

    • +2

Yes it is worth it. Because you should not compare it to a gaming laptop.

It's a powerful alternative to a surface pro, which is only more expensive than this with lower specs.

  • +1

If I could afford this I'd get it just for the difference factor. It's a very very impressive machine in performance and in looks. Would I get the external GPU also? Probably, this is such a leap forward in what's possible for gaming.

I would look at the X13 Ryzen 7 6800HS with RDNA 2 integrated graphics. Will have better battery life and perfect for adding the xg mobile egpu. Currently $1852 at Megabuy.

    • Well the Intel i9 12900h in the Z13 can go up to a 115w TDP, so it will throttle if the cooling gets overwhelmed. Due to such high TDP battery life in such a slim chassis is not going to be great .

The AMD Ryzen 6800HS only has a TDP of 35w, so the cooling in the X13 will manage. Reviews on the X13 say battery life is just over 10hrs. The 680m iGPU is able to play Far Cry 5 around 60fps on normal settings at 1080p.

      • Yeah that's why I think the AMD system would be better and cheaper for this sized laptop.

        • True, battery life on the Z13 only seems to be around 5 or 6hrs on a basic video run down test at best. The absolute best when gaming with a with the dGPU on the Z13 is 1hr. You should post the Megabuy deal.

    • +1

Different enough to justify the difference in price I reckon, the 12900H will have decidely the better multicore performance and the 3050ti will still be quite a bit ahead of rdna2, yes its at the cost of battery life but there will be people that need it. The X13 is also a more traditional 2in1 compared to the surface pro like z13.

      • Reviews seem to indicate 5 or 10% on average when plugged into a power point for applications with a 12900H. I'm assuming the chassis size and cooling is the main culpirate. When gaming, and both are equipped with a 3050ti they seem even, so neither CPU is a bottleneck for that GPU. You could use the money saved towards the dedicated eGPU for the X13. If using the below review as a reference for gaming and applications:

        https://www.ultrabookreview.com/54570-asus-rog-flow-x13-revi…

"In fact, it outscores the Core i9-12900H in the Flow Z13 at a similar sustained power of around 45-50W, as you can see in the following chart. Sure, the i9 scores higher for a few runs, as it can run at higher power in that design for a while, but then the sustained-performance results are similar on the two,"

  • There's some Australia tax baked in

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-13-4-touchscreen-gamin…?

I would actually buy this - if it had 32gb RAM. It is a huge waste to be stuck on 16gb RAM with such a powerful CPU.

    • Well I mean we pay the 'Australian Tax' for every eletronics here in Australia. Remember the lenovo easter one day sale? What if I told you thats the 'normal' price that these laptops goes for in China? Its the same for like every other model or brand out there and comparing AU RRP to US or Chinese RRP is basically meaningless since we always have a price hike baked in to the pricing.

  • +2

I would stick to a normal laptop. These tablets might have a smaller footprint but they're so easy to topple over and harder to move around (have to support the keyboard or close the whole thing). You can't use this in your lap since it always wants to back flip due to the weight of the tablet vs the keyboard.

  • Have read some reviews on this and it's a beast especially paired with an eGPU. Also it looks to come with a keyboard if you compare to a surface pro it looks pretty good in comparison better CPU, dedicated GPU pretty impressive for the price. Also has upgradable ssd iirc.

At this point an jailbroken iPad would outperform this on games.

    • +3

First you dont need to post the same comment twice. Secondly the moment you try to compare a heavy ass gaming laptop to this you are dead wrong.

Yes, the Legion 7 is one of the best gaming laptops of 2021, but its also is 2.5kg at 16 inches. This machine is 1.2kg, 13 inch, touchscreen and a 2 in 1.

You know whats also at this dimension and a 2 in 1? A 13' surface, a XPS 2in1, an HP envy, a thinkpad yoga. And none of the aforementioned laptops, even at 3-4k price range, have anywhere close to the specs of this machine.

best in class cooling (vapour chamber)

… And the z13 uses vapor chamber as well with liquid metal on top. It doesnt just take a 14 core 12900H and 3050ti without thermal throttling for no reason when others in its size category can only take at best a 4core H35 chip.

This is a good deal for those that needed it, and you sir are just being unreasonable trying to compare the two machines when they suit completely different purposes.

        • +3

Either get a proper gaming laptop or a MacBook M1 pro with touchbar (my current business laptop) if you need a touchscreen for business which is dedicated towards each purpose.

And if I really wanted a proper gaming machine separated from work I would get a desktop than a laptop….desktop prices have dropped since like two month ago and gaming laptop dont have the pricing advantage anymore

this gaming tablet with its shitty specs is barely passable for either work or gaming usage and serves no purpose unless you enjoy playing a game boy simulator on windows.

Firstly, I dont know why you keep regurgitating the 'this can run emulators and nothing else' nonsense. This laptop is still plentiful powerful to handle current gen AAA titles-just have to deal at low-medium settings and you can get 60FPS easy even without DLSS. Secondly, there's plenty of productivity tasks which does not run on a Macbook and many of them are CPU centric- and this where the 14 core 12900H will easily chew through where a conventional low powered 4 core laptop at this form factor cannot.

My point is you shouldn’t waste your money on and just get a device or two which specialises towards work or leisure. If you can’t afford two or more then you definitely shouldn’t consider buying this “.

And you can be reassured the people who will buy this definitely arent wasting their money, this laptop is made for the specific target audience that needed powerful hardware on the go.

If people are really short on money and wanted a gaming/work laptop in one they definitely arent going for either this laptop or the all powerful legion 7 because they will go for a 1.2k nitro 5 deal and you are worrying about nothing.
