  • No interest in the cups or whisky. But the ice seems like a cool concept.

    • +16

Honestly, these will slide down the glass and probably break one of your teeth

      • -3

And what happen if you accidentally swallow one? Potential choke hazard for people who scull their drinks.

        • +3

          You may be s$&ing bricks

    • +2

      Cancelled my order, thanks.

  • +43

Whisky stones are dumb and pointless, please don't buy them.

Unless you want to turn it into some weird caveman variant of beer pong. But with whisky. I'm cool with that.

    • +1

Why? Normal ice dilutes by adding water

      • +11

They don't cool as well as normal ice cubes. And extra stuff to clean.

        • +9

In my experience they don't cool at all.

          • +5

@[Deactivated]: Why not keep the whisky in the fridge, solves everything.

            • +2

@tonsta: Yep its funny the length whisky drinkers go to trying to get their whisky cold
But they refuse to use the damned fridge.
I keep my whisky and glass in the fridge then put one small ice cube in the glass works perfectly.

            • @tonsta: No, it doesn't. Cask strength is literally designed to be drunk slightly dilute, for just one example.

              • @[Deactivated]: Keep it in the fridge then add some cold water? Then you get the perfect dilution? Or am I taking the mystery out of drinking whiskey by having it perfect everytime?

                • @tonsta:

Keep it in the fridge then add some cold water?

                  What…like………..ice?

          • @[Deactivated]: They also leave a taste in the whisky.

      • +10

Which is desirable for a proper (or even better, cask) strength whisky. This melting also uses up a metric sh*tload of energy, which cools the drink.

Whisky stones don't phase change, and so they don't cool diddly squat.

(Disclaimer - I don't drink cold neat whisky, so I have no skin in this game)

      • +1

Also, very small bits of stone rub off into your whisky as they knock together in the alcohol. No good!

      • Why? Normal ice dilutes by adding water

Adding a little bit of water is actually good for Whisky…

    • +4

      Ditto. They're trash

      • I reckon Jason Hodges from Better homes and gardens used a few of these to get landscaping ideas.

  • +6

I've had something similar. They don't really cool your drink down a whole lot. Maybe it's just me, but I don't mind having slightly diluted whiskey, as long as it's nice and cold.

    • +2

Yeh cold is key. I'd never drink 75ml of gin, but put a splash of vermouth in it and shake it with ice until it's super cold and I'll have three please.

  • -1

Looks likes its been OzBargained! is out of stock and showing $19.95 will expire.

  • Where is the $5 ??. It show $12.95 to me

  • Just bought 2, 5 mins ago. That's quick

  • +1

These don't do much. You're better off with the steel ones with the gel centre

  • +18

    THESE DO NOT WORK.
    Don't waste your money.

Might as well put your glass in the freezer is more functional than using these.

    • +1

      Agree. They do NOT Work

    • +1

Totally agree. I have these and the stainless steel ones. They don't even cool your drink. Putting a glass into the freezer does a much better job.

      • Putting your head in the freezer is more effective than these cubes

    • They do look cool though but agree don't expect them to actually do any cooling

    • I have some in the freezer, they are useless and I never use them, but my wife gave them to me so I don't throw them out.

  • +4

Rather freeze your glass for 1 hour before drinking.

    • glasses? :)

      • +2

        Bottle

        • +2

I keep my Johnnie Black in the freezer, it's pretty great that way

          • @jellykingdom: I do that to rum, gin and Vodka, but never thought about whiskey. Will give it a go

  • Deal still on, managed to get one

    • Thanks @yht will mark active again.

  • +10

I'm genuinely surprised u can read past a heap of comments saying how bad these are and then buy them anyways.

FWIW, I've owned these and there are genuine landfill.

Just freeze ur glass or the bottle

    • +4

Its ozb mentality. Cheap? Buy first, think read cry angry regret later.

  • +5

These can be bought elsewhere for about $10-$12 for the same brand so disregard to RRP$22.95.

Speaking from experience, I don't recommend them. Stick to ice cubes or drink whisky at room temperature and avoid having more stuff to clean.

Heed the feedback from others here and don't buy.

  • +1

    Tested good for slingshot ammo

  • +1

I feel slightly vindicated having read these comments. I got some of these for Christmas and never thought they were particularly effective. Glad to know that they really don’t work.

  • +2

regardless of the efficacy of the things, thanks for sharing the bargain!

  • I've never gotten the point of whiskey stones. They don't make it cold and besides cold whiskey dulls the flavour?

I guess rocks in your glass makes you look sophisticated lol

    • -4

What's there not to get? They chill your liquor without diluting it.

      • +2

        Two things you haven't got.
        1. They don't actually chill it but operating under the assumption they do
        2. Why drink cold whiskey? It just mutes the flavours. Of course water will dilute it but if you warm up the whiskey to around 16°C you'll find it has a lot more flavour.

Only possible reason is if you're drinking cheap bottom shelf shit and you want to mute the flavours in it. In which case, it'll taste better mixed.

As I said before, it's a visual thing.

        • -8
          1. They do cool the drink down despite what muppets who have spent 5 minutes googling thermodynamics on muh interwebs may have you believe. They definitely do cool down your drink far less than ice cubes but as you have pointed out no one should be drinking ice cold whiskey.

          2. The stones allow you to chill and dilute your drink to the degree that you want to to as you can add just the right amount of water (which high proof whiskeys do require) and not have to worry about ending up with a cupful of watered down piss. Speaking for myself these things get a fair buit of use during the summer months and my only complaint is that they can sometimes scratch up your tumblers.

Added bonus if being able to lump them at your drinking buddies fat heads once they start getting on your tits.

          • @[Deactivated]: Guess what else lets me dilute my whiskey to the degree that I want? Not putting rocks in there at all, and just adding the right amount of water. Rocket science, yeah?

If I want ever-so-slightly-cooler-than-room-temp whiskey - whatever the hell temperature that is - I can add colder water, or chill my glass.

Either way, I won'tlook like a clueless numpty who drinks whiskey through lumps of grey gravel out of scratched up glassware so I can show everyone I'm a contrarian edgelord.

            • @GrueHunter: Ooh someone's salty today. I'd tell you to go get laid but judging by your flying off the handle at an innocuous comment I'm guessing the neckbeard must be particularly luscious :)

      • keep the bottle in the fridge, save you the hassle.

Unless it’s just for show then understandable, but nothing can beat the fridge for a cool drink.

  • +8

Lol you sheep are buying literal rocks

  • +1

    Madness

  • Oos

  • +1

    Rocks in your head mate

  • +3

+1 to the prevailing, in my experience they don't cool at all.

  • surely you can get a bigger bag of rocks at bunnings for $5

    • But these can double as bootleg dice in a pinch.

  • +1

There are going to be a lot of disappointed OzBargainers and people being gifted these.

Wait until they realise that you could use rocks in their backyard, especially the granite or marble variety. 🤷

  • +2

Useless. People buying these got rocks in their head. And whisky

  • Garbage.. Not Recommended for drinking scotch or whisky.

  • +12

I did a little experiment with a temperature probe after getting the stainless steel ones as a gift. Leaving them in a tumbler of scotch for five minutes decreased the temperature around 5 degrees Celsius. I set up another glass with some stone cubes and they did not do much at all. My final test was with ice cubes and they dropped the temp by about 9 degrees. Conclusion - stone is almost useless, stainless steel works pretty well but not as well as ice. Rest assured no Scotch was wasted in this experiment…

  • +1

I bought these exact ones a few months ago, and I agree with everyone else: utterly useless

  • +4

    frozen grapes

  • +3

Don't they taste like rocks as well?
You'd be better off getting those massive ice cube trays and putting one big block in. Have seen it at some fancy Wisky bars, they don't melt much at all.
Or just put on the big boy pants and drink it neat :P

  • Homer, these novelty ice cubes are often made from highly toxic chemicals. Ironically, a real fly would have been much more sanitary.

  • why cant you just put whiskey in the fridge instead?

      Thanks OP purchased.

    • +3

      Made from soapstone
Rocks are non-porous and will impart neither flavour nor odour

Ahh soapstone is a soft talc-like material. I hope to heck these aren't made of it…

    • +6

As cool as an idea as rocks are, practically, it's just as good to put the glass/tumbler in the freezer beforehand…. just saying

      • +1

Agree… not a massive fan of whiskey rocks. Rarely use mine. I think quality varies as they dont do that great a job in my experience but others seem to rave about it.

        • +2

Or put the whisky in the fridge/freezer?

      • +1

        https://www.epicurious.com/expert-advice/do-whiskey-stones-w…

They basically don't work. It's the melting of the ice that has a bigger effect in cooling the whiskey than the temperature of the ice/stone

        • Energy exchange required during change of state is why refrigeration , aircons and ice works better than a cold block of solid matter.

      • True. Had these rocks and they were crap. Hardly kept cold for long either. Actually a chilled glass was better than these rocks

Whisky rocks, the gift every whisky lover gets from their family at some point and gets put in the cupboard to never be used again, or just thrown in the bin later that day. They're pretty useless.

      • My muscle memory would try to crunch these every time. I’ll stick to water ice cubes for my Macallan’s & Pepsi’s, thanks.

    • +1

These rocks don't do jack….bought couple of sets a couple of years back, used once and never bothered using them again, doesn't cool whiskey as much as you think and doesn't hold temperature well

    • +1

These are awful. Save your money. Check comments in previous deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/695873

    • +1

There was a nice whiskey deal today… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/698701

    • what a useless thing to use. lol.

    • In addition to the comments regarding lack of effectiveness of these rocks, that stone looks quite rough to me - rough enough to scratch up your glasses.
