A lot of people don't seem to know this. I would have visited one when i was in the USA last time otherwise

      • -1

A lot of people should read the T&Cs of things they purchase

    • +8

Strange way of thanking someone for their service.

  • +66

Thanks, booked tickets to the USA to make use of this deal.

  • +18

Not a deal. It's been $60/$55 for ages. No bargain here. NORMAL PRICE.

    • +29

The real bargain would be buying Costco membership in Mexico for 500 pesos ($34 AUD).

      • +4

I got mine for $40 in Australia.

        • +5

          save $6

        • How :)

        • +2

What do Mexicans put under their carpet?

        • +11

          Underlay Underlay

      • +1

Did you actually try to buy it from their Mexico website? do you need VPN and Mexican address/ID? I am tempted to go down this route since my current membership will expire soon.

I had a US membership, and it was a pain in the butt to use at Costco here because they had to always call over a manager to override as the card wouldn’t scan

        • More than $60 of butt-pain?

    • +1

Japan and Korea is like $20 AUD

  • +2

Wow nice deal. Didn't know it works worldwide.

  • '???' in my head.

    • +2

      With my BLACK boy???

  • +3

Hey Deano, maybe ask the mods to move it to the forums

  • +2

If we can buy membership online, then we just need to find the cheapest country offering it and buy it from there.
Atm Mexico seems cheapest, can we find a cheaper country?

    • can we find a cheaper country?

      Russia

I think western credit card systems are dead there….

    Costco Membership $60

    I normally pay $55

    • ABN?

      • yep

        ABNs are free….

        • +1

Ah yes, jv with the mortal bankruptcy in the name of a bargain

        • +1

If you have zero business activity for a period of time, the ATO will automatically cancel your ABN.

          • +1

            @DoctorCalculon: Sell something then…

          • +2

@DoctorCalculon: You can call the number in that cancellation email and get it reinstated immediately.

  • Can be bit of a palaver in the US. I used mine a few years back and it didn't scan and had to be manually approved by a manager.

    • yep, same in Japan

  • +1

Isn’t the deal that you can return the membership and cancel it even after 11 months and get your $60 back or did they close this loophole?

    • +2

i don't think that's a loophole since they black list you and you lose the costco lifetime guarantee on your purchases.

      • +1

They don't "black list" you. Speaking from experience, you can sign up again.

        • +1

They just ban you for a period of 12 months.

      • +1

I did it a few years ago without issue and have membership now

    • +1

I was moving to Dubai for 6 months for work and so cancelled my membership and got the $60 back easily. This was few years ago. But apparently you can’t buy membership again for the next 6 months

  • +1

Sadly doesn't work with their travel service, have to be a US member

  • +14

Fun fact that's more useful than this crap, if you buy a gift card and gift it, they don't need a membership to get in and use it…. It's equivalent to the membership

    • So, just buy $60 Costco giftcard, then i can get in, without membership and buy stuff? As long as i have that gift card?

      • Even a $1 gift card?

        • Minimum $25.

      • yes, but at that point, you might as well just buy the membership really

    • I have a friend buy me a gift card. I have not had a chance to use it yet. What I wanted to know is that when I pay, can I just pay with cash/card and no use the gift card at all? Or will the checkout ask for my membership card or gift card? If so, can I ask them to only charge a small amount on the card, like $1?

      • +2

Usually the gift card will work as a one-off. The cashier should use the full amount on the gift card and the excess can be paid by card. The cashier should also take the gift card off you as there is no value on it and as a non-member you don't have the ability to top it up. Of course if you pay for the full transaction, and there is still money on the gift card, then it will be returned.

        • Thanks for that! So whenever you pay, they ask for your membership card every time? And if you only have the gift card, It'll be used in full value.

I was hoping I could just check out and present no membership and no gift card at all, keeping it as my entry card instead.

I would join if it was convenient but I don't live near one and would only go maybe twice or three times a year.

It'll also be a hassle to continue to ask my friend to buy me gift cards constantly, then going to his house to pick them up.

Oh well, I guess it's a blessing in disguise! I buy so much unnecessary and impulse stuff whenever I go!

          • +1

            @NoApostrophePlurals:

I buy so much unnecessary and impulse stuff whenever I go!

The ozbargain way is buy now. Think of uses for it later.

          • @NoApostrophePlurals:

So whenever you pay, they ask for your membership card every time?

Yes, they scan it for every purchase.

    • The gift card is a little restrictive as it can't be used at the petrol station, food court or online. Non members can only spend the amount on the gift card and can't pay the difference in cash/card.

      • Surely you can pay the difference with cash/card. How are you going to shop in exactly $25/$50 totals?

How are you supposed to pay for a $56.72 total with a $50 gift card?

        • That's what I've been told when I checked with Costco.

I specifically asked if I can pay the difference in cash if I have a $100 gift card and was only a couple of dollars over. I was told that I'll have to remove something from my shop to ensure the total is under the value of the gift card. A balance of less than $10 on the gift card will be refunded in cash.

I understand why Costco only allow non-members to buy up to the value they've been given as a 'gift' cos if they allow the difference to be paid with cash/card then it doesn't make sense for people to pay $60 for their membership.

          • @littleburrito: Oh wow, that blows! Ok, I guess I'm gonna have to join up now. I'll get my friend to buy me the mother's day special membership with the $20 voucher then!

            • @NoApostrophePlurals: Please read comments…

              Mother's day $20 gift card
              Buying expires 8 May 2022

              • @jcft: Yes… You should also please read:

"@littleburrito: Oh wow, that blows! Ok, I guess I'm gonna have to join up now. I'll get my friend to buy me the mother's day special membership with the $20 voucher then!"

            • @NoApostrophePlurals: I don't live near one too and wasn't sure if it'll make sense to pay for membership as it seems a little silly to drive all the way there for groceries when I can just buy from Woolies/Coles nearby.

However, it seems there's too much work to muck around with gift cards and restrictions and Costco is happy to refund your membership if you feel you haven't been getting much value from it too.

              • @littleburrito: Yeah im guessing if I take the $20 gift card with membership and I cancel my membership at 11 months, I'll be getting $20 free in essence. I'll probably only go twice in that 11 months.

    • Fun fact, while you can pay with gift card (shop card), you don't get member discounts…because…you are not a member. :D

      • I've always wondered why they have those yellow member discount things. Like isn't everyone in here reading this already a member?

        • So you can see the saving and think you’re getting a deal.

        • I know right? People think that they have found a loop hole with gift cards, but Costco has been doing this membership thing for almost 50 years, they have seen it all. :D

One can always shop with a member to use the gift card, but that negates the purpose of using gift card to shop independently without a membership. Also, if a member made the purchase, then you need the same member friend to sort out refund and warranty.

It's just not worth the hassle trying to work the system.

  • Any other useful announcements for tonight.
