Everyone else has it in the $980-$999 range and yet it still seems overpriced. I do love that karate torch though.

    • +2

      What is karate torch?

      • +3

Gesture controls, holding the phone and making a karate chop motion or fast hand shake turns on the torch.

Sounds lame but it is super convenient, find myself using it a bit

        • +3

I really miss that feature from my old Motorola

          • +1

@happyangus: There's an App called Shake Light that will give you this function back.

            • @hotphil: Gave it a go and it only kinda works some of the time. It's unrestricted battery and requests no permissions but it frequently doesn't work unless you open the app. It'll even work when the phone is locked, it'll turn the torch on, but it cannot turn it off after that unless you unlock the phone and open the app.

        • +1

I showed it to my colleague and he kindly reminded me that it was an accident waiting to happen. I still use it but make sure you have a firm grip.

  • +5

Damn not bad value for the price. Nice to see Motorola using the highest end snapdragon chip. +1

    • +3

A negative point for me. The 8gen1 overheats and throttles.

I'd rather they used the 870 and made the phone cheaper.

      • That's the Edge 20 pro?

        • Yepp.

The problem with the 20 pro is that you still pay a lot of money for a phone that essentially has only one year left of security updates.

      • +1

Agreed. Also look at the battery life on the Xiaomi 12x vs the Xiaomi 12. That's down to the chipset, the 870 is far more power efficient.

  • +44

This is what a high end phone should cost. No more than $800.

    • 100% correct

    • -2

      camera no good

      • there are 3 parts to what makes the camera good 1, the actual camera sensor model, 2 software which they update, 3 the size of the lens …..

so what part of the camera is no good ?

      • "The photos out of the Moto's main camera are very good, though they don't leave an entirely 'flagship-grade' feeling"
        https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_edge_30_pro-review-2402p5.…

For this price, Google Pixel 6 is a much better buy. One of the best cameras around.

        • Camera good. Everything else including QA, ehh

      • +11

Sorry, your fingers are too fat. Please place hand on screen to order a dialling wand.

        • *special dialing wand

      • Biggest phone Apple has ever made is 6.7 inches…

      • +1

depends if you usually carry your phone in your pocket or carry it in your hand, and if it’s in your pocket if you take it out when you sit down or leave it in your pocket ……it’s why apple makes multiple size phones ….also some people text one handed which is tricky with 7” screen …..thumb doesn’t reach corner to corner .

    • Most people don't pay full RRP for flagships .. not even close to RRP

      • +1

        Sure. Like… $800.

        And then there's $pple..

    • +1

Well only 3 years of security updates, who knows how many full OS upgrades. The cost of the device should not be detached from the timeframe of support.

    • I remember paying $300 for the Xiaomi Mi5! Crazy inflation.

  • +2

Actually not a bad price, don't know what Motorola software updates are like though. Poco F4 GT once it has some better deals will be more value than this though, especially with that 120W charging

    • Software updates and support in the long run ain't that great compared to Oppos and Samsungs.

      • Are you saying Motorola or Xiaomi? Because Xiaomi technically has better software support than any of them with the custom ROM scene

        • I meant motorola

    • +1

2 Android OS updates (so up to Android 14) and 3 years of security patches.

    • -2

      no wireless charging sadly

      • It does support Wireless Charging.

      • Doesn't really matter when you can plug in a cable and charge it in 17 minutes, though it would be a nice to have.

  • +3

will this be updated for longer than 1 or 2 android versions? Samsungs now promise 4 android version and 5 years security.

    • +5

      Currently receiving regular security updates.

      Device launched on February, 2022
Security updates will stop on February, 2025

      Launched On: Android 12
      Next OS: Android 13

*This device will receive at least bi-monthly SMRs updates

      Copied and pasted from https://motorola-global-en-aus.custhelp.com/app/software-sec….

My guess is that it should receive 2 major OS updates, so you should get Android 14.

If you're concerned about Android OS updates and want longer term support, there's only two other brands to consider: Google Pixel and Samsung (S22 series)

The Pixel6 gets 3 major OS updates, and 5 years of security updates, while flagship Samsungs (S22 etc) will get 4 major OS updates and 5 years of security patches.

      • +1

        all a33/a53/a73 gets 4 os 5yr security

        • I wonder if a mobile specially its battery can last that long…!!!

            • @shxhshzhz: yep just be gentle on charge cycles and turn off at night ….battery is good for 4 years …..if you hammer it replace battery when it doesn’t hold charge anymore ……my work phone is 3 years old ….turn it off when i get home so that i have privacy …..holds charge for 2 days still including use 8am to 6 pm.

          • +1

            @usmanhafeez2000: I'm using a MiMax3 from 2018 that goes 1.5 days easy between charges.

So I think it's not a big issue.

            • +1

@Mechz: I had the original mi max and everyone looked at me weird cos it had a giant screen for the time. Sold it and got most money back 1.5 yrs later haha

  • Damn only been a few months of release with the SD8G1 and it's already depreciated in price :/

    • +4

8 Gen 2 has been fast tracked and will debut in October.

  • +1

    Camera any good?

  • Who even pays top dollar for iphones & samsungs these days

    • +3

People that arent on OzB, i guess

      • +2

        i.e. most people

        • -2

Literally never heard anyone buy a Samsung at RRP. Anyone I know gets it through company promos for 30-50% off.. Apple on the other hand I myself have paid RRP :D

          • @SuperbRanger: Completely agree, never pay full price for Samsung, too many sales and trade-in offers

Apple on the other hand, happy to pay full prices for iphones any time, the default choice of mobile for parents and grandparents, no tweaking in settings, dont need any tech support from me, everything just work out of the box.

            • @lhou021: Yep agreed, all the Android fanboys downvoting me unfortunately..

    • -2

Samsung sells only when it bundles with JB/Telstra deal. Otherwise no one is gonna buy Samsung

  • +1

This or Pixel 6A when it comes out on the 11th (according to rumours).

    • -4

My guess is Pixel 6A will be priced at Pixel 6 level i.e. around $1,000. But we need to wait and see.

      • +4

pixel a is the budged variant so it's usually cheaper than the flagship.

        • -2

Yes, but as I said, we need to wait and see.

      • Pixel 6 is already $849

        • Where from? On the Google Store the base Pixel 6 is still $999

    • +3

Having gone Pixel a-series for the last few generations I'm tempted to swear off Google. Sick of constant software issues that make the phone feel slow.

      • +2

It seems ridiculous. They have full control over the hardware and OS, yet they still screw it up.

        • HTC is dead for a reason, Google bought HTC phone development team in in 2018 and called it it's own.

          Rest is history.

        • -1

          Exactly. It's a joke.

Delays in answering calls (phone will ring but screen doesn't show incoming call for a few seconds), delays in seeing contact details on incoming calls (another delay of a couple of seconds). Bluetooth randomly cuts out when battery is below 50% (unlocking the screen fixes it, which makes me think it's an issue with process prioritisation), quick settings buttons don't always respond or lag by several seconds (particularly the torch).

I've found plenty of other people online with the same issues, none are recognised by Google as open bugs.

And factory resets have done nothing.

      • +1

I've had no issues with my 4a 5g. I'd Def buy again, and I went from a note 8 to it so a massive step down build wise etc, but at 1/2 or 1/3 of the price of the flagships and no issues I can't fault it.

      • I have had the exact opposite experience (4A). No slowdowns here.

    • Not even a question. Definitely the pixel 6a.

    • Keep in mind that even if the 6A is announced on the 11th, it might take a little longer to be released.

    • +1

      11th of what?!

      • 11th of next week =)

  • +1

not a bad price for the spec
    plus near-stock android experiences
not sure about the camera quality…

  • 144Hz on the screen, nice 👍

  • Anyone know when this deal ends and does this phone have zoom x60?

    • +1

No expiry date mentioned, but based on past, sale prices usually revert back to normal after a week.

      • Sd 870 is two gen earlier than Sd 8 gen 1

    • Deal ends on Sunday 8th according to the catalogue, but i believe towards end of May it'll be same price again.

  • +2

    need 256gb under 900

    • +4

Edge 30 Pro is only available in Aus in 128GB.
You can go for Edge 20 Pro for $599 with 256GB storage and 12GB RAM.
      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/motorola-edge-20-pro-5g-2…

      • Sd 870 is two gen earlier than Sd 8 gen 1

        • sd 425 is sd 445 less than sd 870

        • +1

Still a better option in my opinion. More efficient, without overheating and throttling proplems.

      • if the edge 20 pro had wireless charging i would get it for that price!

You should edit that link up to the main post, it is a good price for people who dont mind not having wireless charging.

      • You wouldn't happen to know if that is dual sim?

        Yes it is - Dual SIM (2 Nano SIMs, 5G + 4G)

    • +1

Poco F3 8GB/256GB is still a great option with SD870, better thermals and they go down to A$400.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/poco-f3

Edit: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/motorola-edge-20-pro-5g-2… with Officeworks price match would be a much better choice.

      • All those bells and whistles and the phone does not even have a proximity sensor…

Officeworks has the 20 pro for the same price as JB Hifi, and I would imagine they barely have any stock left, it's not available online and labelled as "priced to clear'.

The main problem with the 20pro is that, while a great device, you are ultimately paying 600 aud for a smartphone that only has one year of security updates left.

  • Is this better than the S22?

    • +3

      Better in price, yes

  • This is not a bad package. It even has wireless charging!

  • +3

Besides the camera and some performance in games, I'm very happy with my $350 moto 20 fusion.

Might upgrade to this later this year.

    • Same, bought it as a cheapy, even at $500 was a good buy.

  • Wow. That's great price for 8 Gen 1 and it have dual Nano sim too.

  • +3

I have this phone and am really enjoying it.
    -It's very smooth and responsive
    -has dual physical Sim
-it's quite large, so you need to like big phones
-The dual speakers are good, not amazing
-the phone does heat up when doing intensive take
-I've been impressed with the camera quality, although it's not as good as my wife's s22
    -stock Android is excellent
-comes with a 30 watt charger, headphones and case in the box.
-battery lasts me over a day of moderate usage.

If be happy to answer any questions anyone had.

    • Doesn't look like it has microSD slot?

I have a Motorola OneVision as a secondary phone and aside from being a bit slow & the camera not being as awesome as Pixel, it is far and away a better phone for me in terms of features. Keeping an eye out for a higher end Motorola - this one looks great but I really really want the microSD for expandable memory.

edit: actually looking at the official site (https://www.motorola.com.au/smartphones-motorola-edge-30-pro…) it mentions "Expandable Storage up to 1 TB" but not clear what this means..?

      • There is no expandable storage. The sim card tray is just dual Sim, no spot for a SD card.
I think the website is referring to that overseas you can get a 1tb model

        • Gotcha, thanks for the clarification. Bummer!

          • @trawg: some phones' second sim slot can be used as a nano sd card tray as well.
my current Huawei has this function.
could be a dual purposed sim tray?

            • @lhou021: I checked, it's not a hybrid Sim card/SD card slot

"No microSD storage expansion (no other flagship has one anyway), but you can mount an external USB-C SSD as storage. Samsung S22/+ cannot"
