  • Is this similar to to a Nvidia shield?

    • +2

It's a smart TV device, if that's what you mean.

    • +2

yes, but Shield is more powerful

      • +1

        Also significantly more expensive

    • +2

No. It is essentially a smart TV in a stick. More like a Chromecast.
Nvidia Shield is a more capable device.

In saying that, these things are great.

    • +1

      Similar but different OS

  • +2

Is this a dupe or was last week’s $64 deal over and this is a restart?

    • Yeah I ordered mine on Sunday night at this price (less $10 voucher), so if they changed the sale price it wasn't for long at all

  • +1

Reminder that Fire TV has the worst UI out of all the streaming box devices.

    • Coming from the venerable VTV, I agree. I'm getting banner ads and 'recommendations' that would require subscription to other streaming providers.

Thinking of replacing the default launcher with Wolf launcher
      https://troypoint.com/wolf-launcher/

      • +2

Be mindful Amazon have blocked the use of other launchers. They will still work, but you will need to activate them every time you turn on the TV/Fire Stick.

    • I haven't seen a good/intuitive UI on any streaming service/box.

      • well this would have been good if they didn't bombard you with ads for Amazon services

        • FYI, you can turn this off in preferences

          • @Ryanek: Under which section? I thought I thought I had everything turned off but it still shows adverts for shows on Prime. Not that the ads cause me to clutch my pearls or anything, I’m just curious how to do it.

  • Does this have an app for 10 play?

Stack with JB perks coupon to get an additional $10 off

    $10 voucher

  • can this stream videos in NAS?

    • +1

depends on what app and how, works OK with Synology (and their app DS Video)

      • thanks for the info, using windows smb server so I recon it should work fine.

        • if Kodi (XBMC) is available for Fire TV - then certainly will work! just a matter of which app you're going to use to access the content

        • I use Chromecast with Mx explorer or vlc, why pick this and not Chromecast? the only reason I can think of is having a black remote control rather white…

    • If you setup your NAS as a Plex server and configure it for remote access you can use Plex on the Fire TV easily.

  • +1

I have one of these, yeah the UI is cluttered but its SO much faster than my ccwgtv

      • nah, this broke a few months back, you need to open it each time you wake the firestick

        • +2

          Wolf launcher is not broken.
          Updates broke launcher manager.
There are alternative methods to launch Wolf Launcher on startup.

          • @bashar20: There are? would be keen to know :)

            • +2

              @nismoau: Here is one option:
              https://youtu.be/t5y8Aw-rLzQ

I personally don’t need to use these as I blocked the problematic Firestick updates at the last minute before they got rolled out a couple of months ago.

          • +1

@bashar20: the guy says in the video (and comments) it doesn't work from sleep

            • @Mortgagetightass: As I said I don’t use these as I blocked the annoying update. However people have come up with different ways to overcome latest software update. Check the xda forums thread for more details.

  • Will Kayo work on this thing (easily)?

    • +1

yes, all you have to do is side load the apk. there's articles on how to enable this in the settings menu, and you can download the kayo apk by googling for it.

it's my preferred kayo streaming device atm because it's powerful enough to be speedy in the menus

      • this is correct. I have 2 of these now and Kayo installed on both.

Out of curiosity, do you get a proper icon for Kayo in your home menu or just a grey box? mine is grey on both even though it shows Kayo icon during the install process.

        • Yeah grey box for Kayo and Binge here as well. Makes it hard for the wife and kids to work out

        • no, my icon is the green kayo icon however it's weirdly low res…

        • +2

You can edit the apk to ensure you get the icon. I edited all apks with grey icons to show icon correctly.

      • I've been having trouble sideloading on the 4K Max, can you use the downloaded app and install it from that or do I need another app to install it? The article I read basically said can do it all through the downloaded app but when I try to open the download it says 'no app found to handle this file'

        • I think you had to go to preferences after you install “Downloader” to enable things like this.

        • Jump on YouTube, so many step by step guides with heaps of library's. Search firetv apk

  • What would be the point of this if I already had a smart tv ?

    • Gain apps that your smart tv lacks.

    • Get a spare remote :)

    • +2

      More responsive.

    JB Hi-Fi $64

    JB Perks -$10
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/698451

    Afterpay -$30 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/698989

    Total $24

If you have Afterpay Perks you can also get $5 off

    • How do you get the $5 off

  • +1

Only issue I noticed is your can't add kids profiles so that's annoying

  • I am thinking of building a Pi streaming box - how does it compare to this speed wise?

I know a pie 4 will probably be twice the price.

    • +1

The UI is super friendly and easy to use. It feels quick, pretty responsive (video to start, does not seem to need to do that buffering thing) if your internet is good.
The only thing I do not like is as it is a Amazon product, it has their apps and I think ads, if you search for something it comes up with Amazon prime stuff but I am not subscribed to that.

The voice control built in to the remote is excellent.
While watching Youtube, Netfix you can say something like go forward one minute, 10 seconds etc, great.

      Kid and old person friendly.

I used one once and bought one myself almost the next day.

Excellent tech for what I paid which was $53.

I had Chromecast before, just so antiquated now.

  • Anyone get frozen videos on the Youtube app on theirs? I suspect it's when a youtube ad comes up, but I've got to quit to the home screen and re-launch it again to get around it

    • Not me but I'm a YouTube Premium subscriber but when using YouTube on the Fire Stick I see Adds. I have double and triple checked that I have logged in properly and when on my PC under the same account, zero Adds, when logged into the Fire Stick, Adds every time. Anyone else with this issue?
