Should OzB let Shopback post more deals while the eBay Plus debacle is still ongoing?

    • eBay Plus debacle

      What happened?

      • +5

Lots of people signed up to eBay Plus with the promise of $40 cashback, and it hasn't tracked properly

        • I checked mine, also the same, but notice the $49 invoice only gets triggered on the 1st of June.

      • -1

LOL what world you living in ??

        • -3

One where I haven't had any issues with ShopBack/eBay Plus?

    • Yes

  • +14

Wow they REALLY need to hit that monthly target huh

  • Poop i only just bought some

  • +14

While $8 seems good, I am not sure if I will take this one.
There is nothing worth buying on ebay nowadays, probably except Dell.
And you should only use a GC on ebay only if you are 100% sure you will not refund the product.

There are still some ebay eGC from May 2021 sitting in my digital wallet.
Plus it will be equivalent to 10% off from WW tmr

    • What happens if you refund an item paid with GC? Is it that you'll just end up with the same eBay GCs?

      • Yes, but there is not much worth buying anyway, so it sits in my account forever.

plus it doesn't form a credit pool like Amazon.
This is particularly annoying when you have multiple transactions refunded, which is not uncommon given products sold on ebay are generally inferior.
You'll end up with lots of small gift card sitting in your account, like $2.08 $3.04, $4.06
And there is a limit on number of gift cards + code you can use in a single transaction
which makes it not easy to get rid of them.

        • Hmm.. my first time buying from eBay using GCs, I should've researched that first. Hopefully I get some use out of the $300 I'll have stuck in there now :'(

        • Agreed the eBay gift cards balance system is terrible.
I shop on eBay multiple times a week (collecting items that you can only get 2nd hand), so I could do with any discount I can get, but it's just not worth it the terrible system they have.

I will basically only use to for something that will definitely not need a refund, such as Australia Post pre-paid envelopes or something fool proof.

Amazon's gift card system however is great, and I will happily by them all day long.

Yes, although if you lose the gift card number then you're toast, not even eBay can't retrieve what number you used to purchase an item.

Eg. returning a faulty item 12 months later and it gets refunded to the original gift card. If you buy as many gift cards as some Ozbargainers then it is a nightmare trying to control it/find which one the balance went back to.

If you buy 2nd hand goods on eBay regularly, then you're bound get refunds/partial refunds occasionally when condition is worse that described etc.
But for most people only buying brand new items then it probably won't be a frequent problem.

        • but next time you go to buy something else that card ( now with credit) will be listed nuder Giftcard as a payment option when you checkout right?

          • @Elijha: Yes. It's absolutely no problem.

It goes back on the card and the card automatically reappears in payment options.

Source: just did it recently for the first time and have since made a purchase using the refunded gc.

Small leftover amounts on gc also no issue.. You can clear i think 7 gift cards and 1 coupon per transaction (or something like that).

The persons above seem to want to find faults that aren't real.

Caveat: if the automated refund process doesn't work then you would be in trouble unless you know the gift card number. I log mine anyway due fear instilled from ozb comments (I write what i bought and how many cards it was split over into the notes section on each gift card in shopback)

          • @Elijha: In my experience usually it does, but I have definitely had instances where it didn't and nobody knew where it went….Maybe it is better for newer orders now? Still a risk imo.

          • @Elijha: If you buy something with a $100 GC which is close to expire (say 1 month expiry left).
The seller takes their sweet time in shipping the time, and at the last minute cancels the order with a BS excuse.

eBay refunds the $100 back to the original GC a month later (from the date of order), but by that time the original GC is expired.

This hasn't happened to me, but I wonder how eBay will handle this situation, i.e. whether you end up losing the $100 in GC after the refund.

    • +1

I have had a good experience with eBay customer service and getting return the item for a full refund OR keep the item and get a significant partial refund. But it's true, there is less and less to buy on eBay nowadays.

    • Better buy at ww then ?

      • If you need the eBay gift cards for today, this is the deal
If you can wait, Woolies is the deal

Closer to 9%. The face value of the rewards points is 10%….. but to use it you have to spend it i.e. You earn $10 rewards points for $100 gift cards purchase. To use it you're spending a total of $110 ($100 gift cards + $10 groceries) to use your $10 rewards points. So saving is $10/$110 = ~9.1%

      • +2

You're thinking about it the wrong way. We all do grocery shopping, no? It's not like you have to go out of your way to spend $10 to save $10…

        • +2

You might have to if you don't normally shop at Woolworths

        • You're thinking about it the wrong way. We all do grocery shopping, no? It's not like you have to go out of your way to spend $10 to save $10…

Actually I think you are looking it the wrong way. I agree bean_counter.

What is your cost and what are you getting?

You are paying $100 and getting $110 value.

That's a 10% bonus or a 9.09% saving depending on which way you look at it. (same maths as calculating GST)

          • @HomeAlone: Ultimately, the value of the Rewards points is determined by the person using them. If they use 2,000 Rewards points to buy something at Woolworths that they could have gotten elsewhere (without going out of their way) for $8 then they've only extracted $8 in value from using the points…..

  • +5

This will combine nicely with the $49 eBay Plus subscription I just bought under the guise that I should get $40 back…

  • +1

For some the following Woolworths gift card offer (card swappable to eBay) of 10% in Rewards points might be more attractive:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/703187

  • Will it stack with this ?

    • Out of stock, given the bonus is only for the purchase, no stacking is possible.

    • I think so but it is Out of stock

  • If you bought the one earlier, is this considered another separate one?

  • +2

Yeah, nah. Maybe when they process all the missed $40 cashback issues from the eBay plus deal. Ridiculous having to wait until the end of July for a decision.

  • Last day of the month and the final, desperate clutches of Shopback are stretching out to meet those KPIs.

  • I just lost $100 while checking out on eBay using the code from the shop app. Applied the code, then changed my payment method from PayPal to credit card. Page refreshed and reentered the code and it say code doesn't work as the balance is now zero even though I never checkout :(

    • +2

yeah. sometimes ebay 'eats' your gift card. Had this happen a few times now - always form the mobile app… 24 hours and its back on your account.

( happened to me yesterday from Shopback, had 2 cards with a few dollars credit under my account and a new one I had just bought - went to pay a 'won' auction - it showed as pending for 4-5 hours then decided I had not paid and all values were wiped.. this morning did the same thing from a desktop and credit was back and worked… shit system.)
