Normally comes at a premium for Telstra services, so quite a good offer in my opinion. Stay safe, and enjoy.

Does it apply to existing customers also? Or only for new plans and recharges?

        • why are you not on Belong?

      • +3

I'm also a long time Boost customer but no TXT but no 5G phone anyway.

        • +5

          4G brothers uni…… ~Buffering~… …te.

      • You are longtime customer… lub u long time.

But the issue is like new customer who like me do the yearly port in amd port out maybe considered new and to the last of the queue.

    • Both my wife and my phone use Boost prepaid 1 year. I reboot both phone, mine is 5G, but my wife's phone is still 4G.
      Don't know why?

      • get the sim swapped! Free in any Telstra store!

  • +3

I think Telstra has added this for free for select plans.

    • +2

I'm on prepaid and got the text from Telstra. Same end date.

      • On which pre paid offer? What’s your monthly/yearly recharge?

        • I received it on the $30 pre-paid plan.

    • any docs or info?
do you know if it's for telstra prepaid/postpaid or both?

  • +3

    Boost speed boost.

  • I wonder what happens post September.

    • "After the trial, your service will default back to the standard in-market network access for your chosen plan and recharge amount at that time."

I have got 5g written on my phone and I was wondering why. Now here is

    • why is 5G written on your phone?

      • +34

        he wrote it

      • I think the little bar up top shows 5G. Mine still shows 4G as seen here

      • My lg phone has a 5g backlit logo on the back

      • +5

That’s what he owes his dealer 😂

  • +13

Now I just need to have a 5g capable phone. Lol.

  • +4

Always thought 5G was free and standard

    • Not on MVMO plans like Boost, Woolworths etc

      • Anyone know if the 1year Prepaid service directly from Telstra is also eligible for 5G connection?

(was on Boost, then switched to Telstra after poor customer experience with Boost, not using a 5G device)

    • You need to be on a plan well in excess of $60/month to be provided with access. People who pay less or prepaid customers do not get access. Optus is similar. Both have very different coverage, so you have to do some homework if it is something that you really want as a feature.

    5G consumes more data

    • +4

So if I download a movie or watch something on YouTube is the file size bigger?

      • +5

Download? no. Stream? maybe, but probably not because 4g should be fast enough for the highest quality anyway.

      • +3

i think it might use a bit more data,
for example, you are watching a 10 mins youtube but stop watching at 3 mins. 5G probably have downloaded 6 mins vs 4min on 4G, plus it might play at 4k instead on 1080 on 5G if you don't adjust the quality yourself.

It also gives you immunity to COVID

      • +10

My dog starts barking in 5G areas.

      • I thought it gave you super COVID

    • @Nathw: How? It's the same data but just received faster.

      • How? It's the same data but just received faster.

Depends on streaming, some may allow better quality and use more data like Netflix.

    • Depends on the wavelength. It only consumes more data if its mmwave as its too fast to cancel mistake downloads and such. Sub6 5g is not much different to existing lte.

    • -1

      wat?

    • +6

Nope. If you're downloading a 500mb file, it will still only use 500mb.

5G does use more battery though, so keep that in mind.

    • fake news. same amount, but a zillion times faster. only waste more because you end up downloading more stuff with all that free time you now have. lol

  • cmon belong :(((

    • Ahahah good one. Let's start with a proper voice mail and perhaps volte first.

      • 😩😩

  • Hm… I am currently on Boost $200 annual plan and I am in the 5G coverage area
still receiving 4G (on iphone 13 Pro)

    maybe need a phone restart?

    • +2

Have you received a text from them yet? Please read the terms as they are gradually activating customers.

      • Thanks TA
Havent receive the text yet, will wait and see :)

      • people are getting 5g with out receiving sms

      • Finally got the 5G enabled SMS, seems they are progressively moving customers instead of moving all at once

    • +2

      I've got two services:

      number 1 received text - got 5G
number 2 hasn't received text - no 5G, even after rebooting and checking coverage map

  • +1

No text yet, keen to see if its worth it when I do!

  • Nice I'm getting 5G at home now. Didn't receive the text thought. 330 mbps sustained download speed on the Telstra speed test website. About 130 mbps at testmy.net.

  • Haven't received any text and already connected to 5G

  • -1

How much will it be after Trial?

  • +2

Other than being able to "see" a faster download speed on a speed-test website, does this have any real-life benefits for users?

Or is it really as basic as "websites will load a tiny, tiny bit faster than 4G….you'll have less buffering… and you can download files a bit more quickly"?

    • +11

Same question why 100K users on nbn have signed up to 250/25 and 1000/50 plans

    • +4
      • shorter battery life :)
      • carriers love the more efficient use of their network
      • What are those efficiencies that the carriers benefit from? just curious.

  • Long time customer, I notice the 5g yesterday, but only got the message this morning. Now I got 940mbps up and 40mbps down :))

    • Ooft how much data did the speed test take?

      • Same as non-4g test? Like 40mb or something

        • +1

          So accurate testing.

  • Do regular Telstra prepaid customers even get 5G?

  • -1

This is a game changer… I wouldn’t mind moving across! What’s the best 365 day data plan they have?

    • only till september

  • so sad…. I'm still on 4G

  • Thanks TA,
YES…Confirming also I got the same SMS, as I'm with Boost too!
Sure makes a difference in surfing the internet…as far as I can see.
It's a nice surprise seeing 5G on the phone and also seeing I didn't pay for it !

  • +1

Nice, wonder what they will charge for the access after the trial.

    • If they do charge more, it's a good way of luring people in and getting them to stay with 5G.

      • no one will notice… unless they do something shady like nerf their own 4G network

  • hell yeah. hope I get the text soon.

  • I'm on Boost and have had 5G appear at the top of my phone at least in the past week without taking this up.

  • ahh damn, dont think my s10e has 5g
