Got one of the 1TB on eBay for my PC in a previous deal, just ordered this for my PS5. Thanks OP.

    • What price did you pay for the 1tb ?

  • +3

Nice find! I have already run out of M.2 slots though.

  • +5

Umart seems to have price matched this one too, which is great if you have a store locally like me
    https://www.umart.com.au/product/samsung-2tb-980-pro-pcie-4-…

    • +12

Possible umart had the price first and Amazon matched

      • +2

        100%.

  • very good price if you want to get this for a ps5 I paid 420 bucks back when this was released for the ps5 and I had to buy a heat skin so this a very good price.

  • with this drive in my ps5 I can install 80 games thats a mix of PS4 and PS5 games. Whcihs doesn't seem like that many games but when you see the size for the games you know thats alot of space. so total pace is 2.7gb including internal storage.
I use both but I put the games I don't play much on the internal drive so I don't use that much so it has a longer life span hopefully.

    • +10

80 games installed at the same time doesn’t sound like a lot? I beg to differ.

      • -5

my pc has 1000 games installed at the same time so no its not alot.

        • +5

          What’s the point - it’s not like you’re on 14.4k internet

          • -2

@Randolph Duke: if the internet ever goes down for any reason I can still pay games offline. since steam has a offline mode. Or if I am in a place without internet I can still play a game. Or if I decide to play a random game I haven't played before I can just open it with out delay.

            • +13

@kungfuman: 80 games would last me longer than any period in my life I have ever been without internet haha

      • +10

Its a pissing competition.. 80 installed - only plays 3.

        • +2

Don’t think I can go through 80 games in a year or even 5 years. This is just digital hoarders who looks at what games they have installed than what games they want to play.

          • @kaal: I got about 20 odd xbox games, in 10-20 PC games which most are older games - but xbox - 2 installed

        • Totally. I go through periods of filling my hard drives with games, and then periods of having just the bare minimum.

And yet I still always have at least 5 games that I enjoy ready to go. That's really enough for me. I speak right now as someone who has 50 games installed on his PC knowing full well I won't play 30+ of them for a long time. Somehow it feels nice to have them there though.

        • I have 2600 steam games and only 12 installed. Hard drive space is better used for pornos

Question is: Pull trigger now or wait till Prime day?

    • +1

I think this is part of Prime Day deals - I got an email this morning to say they've started as of today, and this same product was $420-odd yesterday.

    • +1

Perhaps wait for Prime Day to stack with upsized cashback from CR/SB (could be better prices on Prime Day anyway as this is just Amazon prime matching Umart).

  • can you remove the heat sink on this one? because its cheaper than even the one with out a heat sink

simply because I wanna get a 2nd one for my PC which has a better in built heat sync and active cooling system for nvme drives.

    • +2

      It isn't cheaper…one without is $350.

    • +2

Technically yes, but there are some of those BS pentalobe screws that secure it in place, and Samsung say removing it voids your warranty. The actual SSD in the system identifies as “Samsung 980 Pro with Heatsink”.

Save yourself the hassle and just get the non-heatsink version if you’re going to remove it anyway.

  • Can I put this in a casing of some sort to use for video editing? I'm not really across all of the SSD types.

    • In theory, yes, but it'll likely depend on the enclosure and if it has enough space for the heatsink.

    • +3

You're better off with a 970 Evo Plus for an enclosure, because enclosures give you a peak of about 700 MB/s out of a max possible 1000 MB/s. So in an enclosure, this 980 Pro will perform the same as a much cheaper PCIe 3.0 drive.

  • +4

The way I play (only a couple games at a time and delete after), I didn't think I would need extra storage. But the PS plus Extra tier is tempting and subsequently so is this SSD.

  • +10

Feels crazy to pay over half the price of a PS5 for just a SDD

    • +13

That's exactly how my missus felt about it. I wasn't popular for buying the PS5 in the first place, so I'm almost certain I'm sleeping on the couch this weekend at a minimum

      • +33

That's good- you'll be closer to the TV.

  • +7

Lowest on Amazon sure, but it was ~$350 a month or two back and came with a $60 steam gift card to boot. OK deal if you're desperate but not an amazing one.

    • +2

Agreed. Still higher than mWave's $358 + Delivery then price matched at JB HIFI using 10%~15% discounted gift cards and sell the steam code if you don't need.

      • +2

I'm not disagreeing and I absolutely love ozbargain. But I seem to have a complexity threshold that kicks in when gift cards are mentioned.

        • LOL….You need to have a better scientific calculator:)

  • +14

It's all fun and games until the next cod update

  • +1

    bag obtained, thanks OP!

  • I wish I had waited for this. I got the one without heatsink then bought a generic amazon heatsink for $35 and installed in my ps5. I am not sure how the generic heatsink perform compared to this one. I have no way to tell.

    • +2

It's just a hunk of metal, it'll be fine.

    • My PC one likes to run at 65 degrees when I’m gaming. shrug

  • How easy / hard is it to upgrade your PS5 with this? Asking as a novice with this sort of thing

  • I'll be looking for a pcie 4 nve ssd for a pc at some stage. Is this what I should be looking at or are there other more cost effective options? I have tons of storage already btw. Just want a fast drive for OS and apps to support a pretty fast pc (hopefully i5 12600k with 32gb ram and a mid range $500 video card)

    • +1

I doubt you will notice a difference between a gen3 and a gen4 NVME for OS/app operations. I have a Kingston a2000 1TB in my PC and have tons of stuff open at once and the disk activity rarely goes anywhere near 100%. It’s not the storage speed that is the bottleneck anymore.

    • +1

You won't be able to tell the difference between a good PCIe 3.0 and this PCIe 4.0 drive in real life use on PC. So if pricing is important for you, look at a 970 Evo Plus instead.

      • Thankyou, you just answered my question. The Samsung gen 3 are a fair bit cheaper and I wasnt sure if id be able to tell the difference.

  • -2

Get the WD 850, performance is better than this and is cheaper.

  • So if I get this for my PS5 it is just an additional drive, I do not need to remove the current storage in there first?

    • +1

Correct, it is an additional drive.

  • What enclosure will fit this?

    • Any M.2 enclosure (you may have to remove heatsink), though unless you have a USB 4 laptop + enclosure it wouldn't be worth it.

  • Thanks Op. Price matched with JB via chat and ordered one :)

  • This seems like a better buy but it is missing the heatsink -

  • Would this still fit laptops like my legion 7 slim?

  • I don't have PS5, but would it be worth it to use as say external drive / backup drive by buying a suitable casing? Or is it overkill?

    • +2

Overkill. Speeds through USB 3.2 don't come close to this. If you have a USB 4 laptop and TB3 enclosure it could be more worth it.

    • +1

Overkill, much cheaper gen3 will be fine.

      • Any recommendation for a gen3 for good value?

  • Can’t see it sold by Amazon AU. OOS?

  • I want one…..wait. Need a computer to suite first.

  • Good deal. Not great though. I’ve seen better when the grift card was involved.

  • Are there still the firmware issues with this one?

  • -1

Why do you need 2tb for PS5? Do you really have a regular list of 2.8TB worth of games you frequently play on rotation every week? Learn to uninstall your games or move them to a portable drive. On the other hand, if you need more storage for 4k/8k 60fps VR JAV, I understand this is a perfectly acceptable problem that needs a solution.

    • +1

Why do you need 2TB storage for 4k/8k 60fps VR JAV? Learn to delete some that you don't need and re-download it when you need it.

      See how stupid that sounds?

      • -1

Standard 12 hour VR JAV intake is 40tb. Now who sounds stupid?

        • -1

          2 standard doses daily

  • +1

It might be the lowest price on Amazon, it's undoubtedly been lower with better promotions from other websites.
