    • +8

US version shows u location distance in miles while AU version in kms… 😝

      • hi rep - is it possible to purchase AU stock / locally? Samsung AU chat guy said "i have no idea" when i asked why these were not avail to purchase from Samsung AU page. Just curious!

  • Why are they more expensive than AirTags?

    • +1

Are they? The plus version also acts as a remote with 120m BT range so that’s kinda impressive too.

      • If we could use airtag on Android would be good

        • +1

Was just wondering if there are any advantages over AirTag as typically Samsung stuff is priced better.

          • @[Deactivated]: A lot more iphones than Samsung compatible devices with these tags. Better network to detect etc is about the difference.

            • +15

@brocky2006: Not really, review done in melbourne shows tag + won over airtag
              skip to verdict

              • @hopper: I'm really surprised that it won over the airtag, especially in Australia (I use a Samsung phone myself too and didn't expect it).

Thanks for sharing the video, it's the best test I've seen of these devices.

              • @hopper: The Airtag was designed not as an active tracking device, but as a last location logged device. So it doesn't refresh the location that quickly, roughly a lag of 10-20 minutes (I have 6 airtags and all of them have different last update times). I guess it was to prevent it being used for stalking someone else. In addition, it makes a chirping sound if it detects motion so that the person is aware that they have an airtag on them.

The SmartTag seems more like a general purpose tracker, so more useful if you plan to use it to locate your car or track your pets/kids. I am surprised that there are enough Samsung phones to give good coverage though.

                • +2

                  @Sleepycat3:

In addition, it makes a chirping sound if it detects motion so that the person is aware that they have an airtag on them.

What is its intended use case? Having a tracker that's slow to update and actively draws attention to itself seems like it'd limit its use for tracking stolen items.

                  • @eug: What’s more, if the thief owns an iPhone, after some time it will alert him that there’s an AirTag following him around and it’s owner can see his location. So yeah, in the interest of preventing stalking apple has pretty much crippled the AirTags capability for theft recovery. I think they’re only kinda useful for finding lost items now.

                • +2

@Sleepycat3: Samsung rather owns the Android Market Share so it does make a little bit of sense that it can compete against Apple in a Tag.

Im rather waiting for a Google Android to open up there systems so that Tags can work across all manufactures without the need to install 3rd Party Apps.
Then Apples Airtag wont stand a chance especially in countries like SE Asia where they moreso purchase the more cheaper Android devices.

    • +1

No idea but it has a keyring and physical button built in, Airtags do not.

  • Got a tag and tag plus. Not entirely sure if I need the features in the plus but I figure it'll be useful for tracking keys. The cheaper non plus can go on bigger things.

  • Thanks, picked up the non plus version to test it out.

  • I got mine recently and returned it as it keeps on crashing each time i try tracking it within the map within smartthings.

    • I have 2 and nothing has crashed so far.

      • I've done everything by clearing apps cache to hard resetting the device, but the track card within the app keeps on forcing closing up.

I've tried it on other devices too and the same thing happen.

Called Samsung and all they can say is… The smart tags + is not is not compatible in Australia blah blah.

  • Which one is $25? I can't seem go find it

  • +1

Got + for my ninebot, hope I never get to track it

    • Was thinking the same for mine, but I thought it's too obvious and somebody would just rip it off

      • I unscrewed the bottom of my xiaomi scooter and stuck it inside. signal still seems to be fine.

    • Fyi, i had my scooter stolen with airtags and police refused to do anything, even if we knew where location was. Said most he could do was file a report…

      • +1

Could you just go to their house and bash them

        • +1

depends on who is the "you" and who are the "them"

  • Same can't see the cheaper one

  • Is UWB safe for pets?

    • +2

I'm not concerned about UWB - wouldn't like my dog to eat the button cell battery though!

  • Only the + still available as at 7:55 AM AEST

    • bummer, i wondered why i could only find the + product page.

  • Can anyone tell me if the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 plus has UWB in it? I've already tried to search the internet, the tab s8 ultra has it….but no info on the s8 plus.

Planning on using these tags with my tab s8 plus. I had a s21 for a few months but just could not use a non Pixel phone at all… returned it and got the pixel 6.

    • I recently debloated my wifes S9+, removed all the samsung, microsoft and other apps that I didnt need. Installed Nova Prime launcher on it with a pixel icon pack, and voila, it runs beautifully and gives a close enough stock android feel. Coming from a Nexus line of phones, I was pretty impressed with how it turned out and am using it as my daily driver.

  • I can't find the non plus version.

  • Anyone tried these with their cats?

    • +7

Yes. My cat has great difficulty holding the phone AND using the app. :(

      • :D No I mean attach one of these on your cats so I can find them if they are lost :D

        • no…the cat will not have Bluetooth or internet access enabled

  • +1

I'd love the standard version but can't find it.

$20 for an AR gimmick isn't great value.

    • I bought a 4 pack on ebay from US for around 160 minus shopback 15% a day ago

    • +2

I'd love the standard version but can't find it.
$20 for an AR gimmick isn't great value.

The AR version would let you find it more easily. :)

      • Agreed, I wouldn't say it's a gimmick. It's more precise.

      • Yes but the standard version can get you very close, I can't imagine there would be many situations where the AR version would actually help you find it faster.

        • It was actually meant to be a joke about OP not being able to find the standard version, but yes the standard version can get you close if there are people with Samsung phones nearby. If it's in a large open place like a park or beach it'd be easier with a UWB one. At double the price it's a hard sell, but overseas it's a $10 difference so might as well get the better one then.

          • @eug: are all samsung phones automatic beacons for the tracker like how it works on apple phones?

would there be more samsung phones than apple phones in australia
(I would think so… since samsungs sells alot of those cheaper non S2x phones quite alot)

            • @pinkybrain:

are all samsung phones automatic beacons for the tracker like how it works on apple phones?

No, it's opt-in. I'm surprised people haven't kicked up a fuss about Apple opting everyone in to their Find My network by default.

Samsung's SmartThings Find has about 200 million phones. Apple has "hundreds of millions".

              • @eug: on apple, to opt in, don't people need to be signed into the Find My Iphone,
which essentially means you agree to be part of the network if you want the benefits of find my iphone etc?
If they don't want it then they can sign out/disable find my iphone.

With apple users, most tend to be not be as tech knowledgeable compared to android user
so doubt they care to make a fuss about being auto opt in to the Find My network

Samsung not auto opt in all their phones, means their smart tags aren't going to be as good as apple.
It should be auto opt in, and people need to opt out…

                • +1

                  @pinkybrain:

on apple, to opt in, don't people need to be signed into the Find My Iphone, which essentially means you agree to be part of the network if you want the benefits of find my iphone etc?

Apple turns it on when you update to iOS 13 or 14 or macOS 10.15 or 11.

With apple users, most tend to be not be as tech knowledgeable compared to android user so doubt they care to make a fuss about being auto opt in to the Find My network

Apple makes a big deal about privacy, so it's interesting that they opt everyone in to their tracking network by default.

Samsung not auto opt in all their phones, means their smart tags aren't going to be as good as apple.

That's what I thought too, but I was really surprised when I checked out some comparisons on YouTube. The Samsung tag worked better. I guess it's because there probably isn't a big difference between 1 Samsung user near your lost item or 5 iPhone users - as long as there's 1 near it, the location can be tracked.

  • +1

Will these work with a pixel 6? From my outdated research (can't find any info from this year) it looks like it'll only work with samsungs

    • +1

Yeah is this android compatible? Or exclusively Samsung?

      • Yea, from what I've read from mid to late last year it was exclusively Samsung. Other info I found was that pixel 6's came out with a uwb chip in them which allows pinpoint locations or something but the chips aren't working or something. I really don't want to have to get a tile..

        • Interesting.. why the tile reluctance?

          • @[Deactivated]: All reviews I've seen show air tags and smart tags performing waaayyyyy better than tiles. Also tiles can't provide precise locations, they can only ring so you have to be near them to find them. That could be misinformation but that's what the reviews and videos showed

      • +1

Yup. Exclusively Samsung. Shooting themselves in the foot, I think. More Android users means bigger SmartThings network.

I bought a Samsung phone recently and was tossing up between a SmartTag or a Tile. Decided on the Samsung since there were more Samsung phones around. Looking at my immediate circle of friends, all of those using Samsung phones leave their optional wireless stuff and data sharing on, so the chances of my SmartTag being picked up is probably higher than Tile.

        • who is "Shooting themselves in the foot, I think"?

          you talking about samsung?
maybe they don't got a choice unless android opens up to allow it to track on all android phones
which would be much bigger than apple phones market

          • +3

@pinkybrain: Samsung could have done what Tile do and let anyone install their app and use their tags. Instead, they're locking everyone else out just because they're not using Samsung phones. I'd argue they did have a choice, but chose not to make it available to everyone.

  • Why mine shows international delivery fee $13.01?

  • In this review, the Samsung SmartTag smoked both AirTag & Tile.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wefUV_bR0Y

Not surprised about his findings on the Tile, I've got a few Tile Pros and they are pretty crap :/

  • +1

I just used one of these last week. I stuck it into my son's jacket pocket while we were in Mt Buller. So I can track him down throughout the day. As he was doing lessons and I was doing my own thing. I've also stuck one in my car, bike and will put them in my luggage when I travel. There are plenty of reviews comparing the Apple Air Tags vs Samsung Smart Tags. Smart Tags seems to always win, hands down. Which is surprising considering Apple's market penetration. I'm so happy with the Smart Tags that I have. That I'm looking to buy more. Although I'm looking to get just the Smart Tags and not the Smart Tag Plus. Smart Tag Plus are only really needed for small items like keys. Although I've never lost my keys..

    • i'm interested in your comment "Smart Tag Plus are only really needed for small items like keys" - why do you say that?

      • +1

The Smart Tag Plus provide the ability to use your phone to locate items close to you. It has an augmented reality thing that shows your where your item is (potentially through walls and items). So it's not necessary for large items like cars and bikes. But if you regularly lose your keys in the back of your couch. Potentially if you cat or dog sleep under your bed and you can't be bothered to lean down (perhaps you have a bad back). The App will allow you to locate your tag through objects like beds and couches (although I've not tried that). That's at least the theory. Best to have a look at videos about the tag to see what I mean. Worth noting, I've got one of the Plus devices and three of the none plus ones. I've yet to use the Plus device.

      • The Plus model has UWB support which lets the phone accurately determine the direction where the tag is. So if your keys fell out somewhere at the beach where it's hard to hear a beeping sound, you can scan the area with your phone camera and it'll show you the direction the tag is.

With the non-Plus model you'll know generally where it is but you'll still have to search for it after making it ring. Should be ok in a quiet area but might be hard in a noisy area or if it's buried inside a bag. If it's a bag you might not want to draw public attention to it too.

        • +1

I located my son in one of the busy Mt Buller eateries using the non-plus device. It gave me a pin within metres of where he was. That was indoors and I didn't have to make the device "sing" for me. Losing keys in sand or snow is a good use case though.

        • which samsung phones has UWB though?

          • @pinkybrain: Their flagship ones. S21+ and Ultra, S22+ and Ultra, Note 20 Ultra, Fold 2, Fold 3, and all their successors no doubt.

    • thanks for the comments - ok makes sense yeah. i guess given there are no "standard" units left, i am limited in purchase options now anyway… Wifey+my S21 dont have UWB feature support too i believe
I have Syd>Dubai(2days)>Prague flight in early Aug with the fam that I'm looking for some extra measures for baggage .. i know there's arent as fully fledged as GPS/subscription units, but it might be reasonable enough….

      • +1

Luggage is a really good use case for these tags. In theory you'll be able to see if they came with you onboard your plane. Or if they're still stuck at your departing airport. And considering the mess the aviation industry is currently in. It's well worth having in my opinion. Worth noting that there's nothing wrong with the plus devices. Just that they cost more.

        • thanks, yeah it's entirely my concern with baggage turmoil at the moment! assuming the connectivity and uplink with other Galaxy devices of course, i'm hoping i can at least work out if stuff is "here" or "somewhere else"… if something bad happens and the bags go walkies

      • +1

This was featured on TV a few weeks ago:

Finding My LOST BAG at Melbourne Airport with an Apple AirTag // Reunited With My Cycling Gear!
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AJvw5_RnYQ

        • yea i read bout that - amazing huh…

        • Dude that was amazing thank you! Shocking, but amazing. That baggage handler guy was amazing and it was so cool to see him reply in the comments.

How are things that bad that this is the solution, crazy

        • That baggage handler guy was amazing and it was so cool to see him reply in the comments.

There's another comment that said his father watched it on the news and saw his missing bag on top of Shane's bag. He took a photo on the TV and went to the airport and managed to collect his bag.

Finding My LOST BAG at Melbourne Airport with an Apple AirTag // Reunited With My Cycling Gear!

This feels like a situation where the UWB AR-finding feature on the Smart Tag+ would be useful in tracking down the location at the end. It seems to work better on the Smart Tag+ than the Apple AirTag.

  • Can you use these with Non-Samsung android phones?

    • Unfortunately, no.

  • +1

Does anyone know why Samsung Australia doesn't distribute these directly?

    • +1

A friend of mine asked the Samsung store in Sydney if they had it. They said they haven't had it in stock for a long time, which means they had it at one stage. Maybe it's affected by the parts shortage so other countries with larger markets are prioritised.

  • +1

I use both Smarttags and Airtags. The Smarttag+ has a ridiculously low 5 months battery life and is more expensive. The UWB feature that it has is not useful as you will be so close to the item to use it that you can just listen out for the chirp. The normal Smarttag and Airtags have 12 month battery life. The Airtags have UWB. UWB is a gimmick as again you're practically on top of the item and can listen for the chirp. With the Smarttag there is a signal strength indicator. I have tested it and I can use it to work out if I'm getting closer or further away from the tag based on signal strength so it's similar to UWB but without the limitation of 5 month battery life. With the Smarttags removing the battery cover is quite hard so pets would likely swallow the whole thing and not just the battery. I don't know how child safe it is with button batteries but wouldn't risk it because the cover is not held down by a screw. The Smarttags have a button when you squeeze it and you can program that button such as making your phone ring. Smarttags have history location whereas Airtags don't. Smarttags don't give an unknown device is following you message as you have to manually scan for unknown tags nearby. Both Smarttags and Airtags have item left behind options. I've noticed that the Smarttags are much quicker to warn me if I've left something behind. You can set home locations for both to not give you left behind warnings. Smarttags are bigger and have a hole. Airtags are smaller with no hole so that Apple can sell you accessories.

Airtags have a massive find lost item network because every iPhone is an Airtag tracker by default. Smarttags are Samsung only and only for newer phones with SmartThings installed. Participation in the lost item network is opt in for Samsung but the phone annoys users incessantly to agree so hopefully a lot of people agree. There are lots of Samsung phones about so they'll have a large lost item network too but unlikely to be as large as with iPhones.

  • +1

boo - was hoping some of the standard ones would come back in stock before this offer ran out…. bummer

  • Does the Smarttag+ work with the S22+? I don't understand why it on the website it says only works with "** AR finding works between devices that support UWB technology. UWB is supported in Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy Note20 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold2."

I want to purchase one to put in my luggage before we go to Europe

    • It works with the s22, so I'm assuming s22+.

  • +1

I don't understand why it on the website it says only works with "** AR finding works between devices that support UWB technology. UWB is supported in Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy Note20 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold2

The SmartTag+ was released when those phones were current. They didn't update the page when the new phones came out. The S22+ definitely has it, the S22 doesn't. The S22 will still find the Tag, but not with the directional UWB tech that points you to the location.

  • Had the battery show low level after a week, anyone else experience the same?

    • Not me, both of mine are still going strong after a few months.
