Using it for last 3 months. Dont have a subscription as i have a security camera top of the door

I've owned one of these since release. Very good, but you'll be recharging around once a month if you have a lot of foot traffic & have events enabled (person/animal seen etc).

Also you'll want to pair this with a nest hub to act as the chime/screen.

    • Do you use it with the nest hub? If so how is the performance? From the time bell is pressed to the time video is shown?

      • +1

Depends on the network. I find sometimes its instant if someone rings the doorbell. But if it's a detection of a parcel for example, by the time I open the app they are gone. I would say 5 seconds.

I use it on the nest hub sometimes when the person actually waits and have talked to people through the doorbell with no issue. It works relatively well I find.

      • 5-10 seconds for the chime, 10 seconds for video. Not amazing but not a dealbreaker.

Happy with ours, as Hawxy said, it lasts about 4 weeks for us. We're on a main road and lots of buses activate the sensor. We've turned off most notifications for people as the main footpath is about 10 metres the front of the doorbell, I was getting notifications every 5 mins for a "person seen" regardless of the zones I set up.

Still have notifications for parcels and it works very well. Haven't paid for the sub, most notifications I review within 24 hours to see what was going on. There is a noticeable delay in the doorbell notification to the Nest Hubs, which is a little disappointing. About 15 or so secs, so you'll absolutely end up with a AusPost red card "sorry we missed you" if you rely on that. Phone notifications are a little quicker.

We have a few Nest Hubs around the house and the Nest Wifi 3 pack. Planning to get the Nest Cam's at some point in the future.

    • Does video to the nest hub also take 15 seconds - or is that just for audio announcement "someone's at the front door"?

      • I got the battery version recently and wired it to my existing doorbell - all working fine and no recharge required.

I haven't found a way for the video to automatically show on my Hub when someone presses the doorbell - it only announces that there is someone at the door and doesn't show the video unless you ask it to. I would like it to do that and if someone knows a way …

        • +1

I'm not sure how to not have the video show lol. By default there's the announcement on the Nest Hub and the video pops up, with auto responses and mic option to speak to them.

          • @sghetti: Thanks - I thought that should be the case !

I'm gonna have to check it all again in that case, as something doesn't seem right on my config

      • ~10-15 seconds to get the notification that someone is there. Video loading is a bit hit and miss, it takes a bit to activate the camera if you're loading into it, most likely a longer delay is accessing remotely.

  • I gotta say that I've not been a huge fan of the battery life with this product.

At most, I've been getting 6-8 weeks with wake up sensitivity set to low.

The only comparison I have is with the eufy doorbell which easily gets at least double the battery life, even after 2 years.

  • Anyone know when the new wired one will be coming out
Meant to be this year some time

    • +2

The battery one actually does have provisions (two black screws behind) to be hardwired.

    • this doorbell can be hardwired to charge the battery
it just requires a 8-24VAC power
      https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9247132#zippy=%…

Can be easily found from Jaycar or online
      https://www.jaycar.com.au/16vac-1-25a-unregulated-power-supp…

(Note: License electrician is required for hardwired installation)

      • Just thinking… Why need licenced electrician? It's like plug and play

        • +1

It's just something people on this site are obsessed with saying.

        • +1

For hardwiring you do need to screw the 2 wires to the back plate instead of plug and play

While it’s in low voltage it is still possible to get shock if you touch the powered wires with bare hand

Tho I do agree it’s a very easy job to hardwiring them yourself

          • +6

@littlesoldier: a 24V shock is perfectly fine compared to the shock from the invoice the sparkie gives you for hooking up 2 low voltage wires!

            bah dum tish!

      • Correct me if I am wrong but I thought you only need a licensed electrician for anything over 48V? Otherwise you would need a licensed electrician to swap over a car/truck battery etc. Having said this you should only do the wiring if you know what you are doing.

      • We have a multiple light switch on the other side of the wall (inside the house). Can an electrician power these video doorbells from that by drilling through to the outside?

I would love for this to be subscription free, more reliable and better battery life as I have lots of other google/nest products. I currently have been using this
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/orion-black-1080p-hd-grid-connec…
for last couple of years and I think it is great, especially for the price.
    Battery life prob 3=4 months
No subscription, everything stored on memory card and can be accessed via phone anytime, anywhere.
Worth looking into if anyone interested.

Anything else? Perhaps a free pizza to enjoy after install?

      • +1

Well I think you missed the vibe there. I was only hoping for things that should be standard for a product from Google, and at that price point, especially seeings the one I linked is only a fraction of the price and it is all of those things.

thanks mate, might grab that one for $99

I sold mine after about 12 months. Here is what I posted elsewhere on ozbargain.

    Pros:
    - the motion notifications are quick
    - you get a nice little gif of the motion detected fairly quickly (on iphone)
    - you can use any google homes as chimes

    Cons:
    - annoying to stop certain google homes being used as chimes
    - very slow to show up on Google Nest Hubs
    - Very slow to load the live feed up from notification on iphone ( most of the time if its a delivery guy, they've already dropped and ran by the time you can open the stream)
    - awful battery
    - expensive subscription to see anything recorded more than 3 hours ago
    - slow to alert on google homes/nest hubs

to sum it up, bad battery and too slow to be useful.

      Is this part possible?

You can set Do not disturb per Google Home / Speaker in the app

        • I've done it for a Nest Hub we have upstairs which is nearby our kids rooms. I've set a DND for 6/7pm onwards so the doorbell chime doesn't go off up there.

      • +1

Yeah, what littlesoldier said is true. it just means that the speaker then doesn't get notifications for reminders and broadcasts.

    • +2

For me, I think push notification is pretty quick and sensitive
and also pretty quick for google home notification

Agree that live feed is quite slow but kind of the same speed when I was using Ring doorbell before

      • Hi mate

How is the lag between pressing it and being able to view and answer from your phone like?

How is the battery life? I have read numerous posts and reviews that it's almost once a month that you have to charge it.

Is it also possible to turn off motion sensor and only get notified when someone presses the doorbell?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

        Thank you.

        Cheers

    • What did you end up getting after this?

      • A standard doorbell and a Eufycam 2C mounted above the door.

    • I have two and fine almost everything you say not to be my experience?

      • Awesome, pretty happy for you.

  • Did they send store credit ?
    SMS or email?

  • got it for 216 with $20 concierge credit. paypal only charged 190. interesting. not sure how

    • I did the same, got charged the full $221 ($5 for shipping extra) :'(
      You're just lucky I guess!

  • Used my $120 PayPal voucher and had a $30 store card already, came in at $86.70 👌

  • I have one and also the security camera for at the back. All linked up to various nest Hubs plus subscription.
Door bell works really well, the dog has learned to bark if it hears a chime from my phone saying someone is approaching.

I did have an issue with one doorbell where it stopped working after 2 months. From what I can tell it was not registering that it had been placed on the mount after being recharged. Made a claim, google sent a new one and I sen the old one back.

  • Has enyone else noticed that the live audio feed from the door bell to the phone has now changed to the call volume control instead of the media volume control? It has become very difficult to hear.

    • Mine has been like that for a while, but on the contrary it's quite loud and inconvenient when I open the video feed at work. My phone and audio is always on mute, but these notifications and the video feed when opened has it up full volume on speaker by default.

  • It's ridiculous how badly Google have botched the nest acquisition

  • Just ordered this but now having second thoughts as I'm replacing my arlo doorbell which has significant lag to view stream and 2 way talk almost never worked. The lag seems to be similar here.

The poor battery life also would be annoying so now thinking of just getting ring 4.
