Musashi 100% Whey Protein Chocolate or Vanilla 2 kg $52.79 (Normally $87) Delivered ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Chemist Warehouse

950

There are possibly better protein powders out there, but Musashi is cheap and made in New Zealand. Normal Woolworths price $40 for 900g and currently on sale for $30 and this is the slightly higher quality '100%' product instead of 'high protein".

With Bulk Nutrients being $35kg this is a good buy.

    • +16

It wasn't that long ago when it used to go on special for $40.00.

    • +1

I only buy BN because they have the lactose free option.. definitely goes down a lot better than traditional options

      • +3

Shame they get their WPI raws from the US and shame they don’t test these raws for heavy metals.
        Why I switched to VPA

        • How do you know they don't test or buy low quality protein?

        • What about Aminoz?

          • +1

@gogo1234: Never purchased from them. Might be best to simply email and ask where they source their raws.
See if they publish their COAs, what they test for as well

    • And it tastes better.

  • Mine ran out yesterday. Good timing!

  • Good value. Even the plant variant is on sale being cheaper than amazonia raw.

    • I've been getting B Raw but just realised how expensive it is at double the price ($55/kg). Any chance you've tried that as I'd like to know how it compares to Musashi or Amazonia Raw?

  • The price is actually $52.79 as every cent counts for an OzBargainer

    • Haha- thanks. Fixed

    • +2

      ShopBack for 1% off $52.31

      • You can actually get 2% Cashback by buying SB Super Swap & swap to Chemist Warehouse gift card

Then you save one dollar, then you….

        • Shelve it :)

Amazon AU (Prime) is doing the same price… I have a feeling they will probably get stock shortly.

    5kg = $150 = $30/kg

    so musashi price is good!

    • +2

Yep not much difference in protein % either -

      Musashi 74%
      Pure Product 80%

    • Yep excellent product … I get it too.

  • +3

Don't these go half price every now and then?

    • +1

Yep it seems they alternate between 40% off and 50% off every few months. I got them half price 20th May.

    • +1

Use to be 50% often. Now it's 40% often and 50% infrequently.

      • +1

Bugger! Fingers crossed their INC products are comparable in quality

        • I have tried that as well and to me it's pretty much the same. I didnt notice any difference in taste and mixing and going by the ingredients list it's the same.

    • They do. I bought them several times from chemist warehouse at half price.

  • it was about $10 cheaper last deal and then subsequently most of us got 10kg WPC for free in my last post

  • +14

Same price from chemist warehouse ebay - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/324799289503

I have a dumb question. Can I use this if I just want to reach my daily protein target? I am on a diet and don't get enough on a daily basis. I move around a lot, but I don't really work out. Or there are better alternatives for me? Thanks

    • +5

Yes this is perfectly fine for that

      • +1

        Thanks!

    • +7

You could use it as part of a balanced diet.

      • +1

        Thank you! I bought one.

    • +2

You can use whey supplements to reach daily protein requirements, yes.

Some have more sugar than others though, and Musashi is one that has more sugar than some other brands so if you’re on a weight loss diet it may be counter productive to use this particular protein.

      • +1

Thank you for your suggestion. I checked the sugar on this protein, and for me, it's not too bad!. I bought it now I'll give it a try.

      • +3

Wrong. You're talking about differences of 1 gram of sugar.

There's more sugar in half a bite of an apple.

        • Wrong. You're talking about differences of 1 gram of sugar

Not talking about or comparing to apples, talking about carb content when on a weight loss diet.

I don’t recall the details but compared to other whey products Musashi is at the higher end in carbs.

          • +2

@0jay: Dude, you're talking about a single gram of sugar.

A single serving of plain almonds has 150% as much sugar.
A single small tomato has 240% as much sugar.

It's preposterous to claim this makes any difference to weight loss. No one is controlling their carb intake to the single gram - and if they are, they're not taking nutritional advice from you on OzBargain.

            • @Wolfenstein98k:

you're talking about a single gram of sugar

Calorie deficit diets are a thing.

I couldn’t care less tbh but you’re pissing in the wind

              • @0jay: A single gram of sugar is 4 calories. 4 calories a day is a whopping 4 gram difference in weight by the end of the week. It's not breaking the diet for anyone.

                • -5

                  @filmer:

A single gram of sugar is 4 calories

I’m not on a calorie deficit diet, so I don’t care. For those that are, they count calories like misers.

Whether the difference is significant or not isn’t my point. My point was that there is a difference between products and for a person on a diet of this kind it may be worth considering.

Beyond that jfc get over it. I’m not giving nutritional advice, I’m merely pointing out something that used to get discussed quite a lot re whey supplements generally.

If it doesn’t apply to you or if you consider it immaterial more power to you.

                  • @0jay: Someone on keto might be wary of it, no one else will. It's like 20seconds on a treadmill for 4 calories…

                    • -2

                      @filmer:

                      no one else will

No one you know. No one you can imagine.

                      • @0jay: You're literally talking about as many calories as are burned walking to the kitchen to make the shake, and shake it, in the first place.

                        • @Wolfenstein98k:

as many calories as are burned walking to the kitchen to make the shake

You ever been grossly overweight, cowboy?

                          • @0jay: Nope, but family and friends are.

None of them would ever ever ever experience a difference in their life by counting a single gram of sugar per day. You offset this simply by walking to the mailbox.

                            • @Wolfenstein98k: I think you’ve got pretty limited life experience. Still living at home?

My assertion was that whey can be used to meet daily protein requirements but that some brands have higher carbs than others, to keep that in mind.

If you want to jerk on about what it might mean for a healthy person to burn off a gram of sugar then enjoy yourself. Not everything’s a binary proposition, not every problem has a ready solution. All this is completely beside my original point and is, to be frank, so fcking tedious I fear I may sht myself out of sheer boredom as I type these words to you now.

I’m going to head on outside and get a bit of exercise to head off this urge, you enjoy your evening.

                • @filmer: It's worse than this - no product is labelled accurately enough to be able to count a single gram, anyway.

Weigh each scoop with a jeweller's scale and you'll see each scoop, even perfectly levelled, differs by 3x this amount.

                  • +1

@Wolfenstein98k: I know the myprotein scoops hold around 20% more than a serving. Bulk nutrients are pretty spot on though.

              • @0jay: The margin of error for labelling is higher though. Trying to manage a fifth of a teaspoon of carbs, in a product you scoop out with scoops that vary in size by +/-10%, is a total joke.

Calorie deficits are a thing, but each individual's basal metabolic rate differs more, day-to-day, than the difference a single gram of sugar makes.

My point is simple: don't give nutritional advice if you're not going to think it through first. Memorising a few rules like "less sugar is better" is okay, if reductionist to a fault (what is offsetting the sugar? How is it lowered in the lower sugar product?), but don't go around giving advice to clueless people when your advice is shit.

(You also switched from carbs to net calories which is completely different.)

                • @Wolfenstein98k:

                  don't give nutritional advice

Sorry mate you’re going to have to point out where I’ve given nutritional advice because it’s completely beyond me where you get that from.

Y know what? Don’t bother coz I could care less tbh

  • If in SE QLD, good price pharmacy regularly have Musashi on sale for $42 a tub. I've noticed CW sale will come on then about a week or two later Good price have their sale and are always cheaper.

  • +2

Could buy the INC protein (Chemist Warehouse branded) 2kg for $43

    • Does the INC stuff usually go on sale same time as Musashi?

      • +1

I've seen it go on sale at the same time but can sometimes be different

  • +7

Check your CBA offers too, should have $10 off $60 @ CW

  • +2

Checked MyProtein, and this is still cheaper per KG, even if you choose the 5KG option. Gonna pick some up tomorrow!

  • +3

I'd pay the extra couple of bucks and get the INC 100% WPI.
WPC/WPI never used to bother me but I must be getting old as WPC or blends bloat me now

    • Probably the lactose

    • Thanks! Their plant protein is cheaper than Musashis. Will give them a go

    • How much do you take per day?

      • Only 1 scoop generally. Maybe 2 if my diet has been pretty average for the day

        • Nice. Blends have always bloated me. I thought it was lactose but it isn't just that. Being a vegetarian since childhood my body just did not develop enough protease enzymes probably to digest complex protein

          • -1

@John Doh: That's actually not good advice. Your body can only absorb a certain amount of protein in one go, so eating a meal that contains too much is a waste. It can also potentially harm your kidneys long-term.

            Please do your own research.

            • +1

@WatchNerd: There's been many studies in recent times showing the original thought of 20-30g per meal is no longer ideal and there isn't really a limit on how much your body will absorb in one sitting. I mean you'd be foolish to try putting in 200g and not expecting to excrete some of it but 70-80g has been used in studies showing a higher amount of anabolic response.

Kidney damage is also no longer linked to high protein diets if they are healthy to begin with, it is only when you have kidney disease that the damage can be sped up.

              • @whitelie: Yes 100% this. I still take some protease supplement with WPI tho.

              • @whitelie: True, and not true. If all you're having is a protein shake then it is digested quickly and 30g with a lifetime of a few hours is reasonably accurate (the original studies were using protein shakes). If you're having a shake (or any protein) with a full meal, then as you said, you can eat far more without it going to waste.

    • +1

Pretty much my go to for years. However I prefer Vanilla. No bad taste. Chug down 3 a day.

      https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/74332/inc-100-wpi-va…

      • That's quite a lot of protein. Do you get much from your regular diet?
Or are you just a big unit training bloody hard?

        • I wouldn't call it a lot. Works out to around 78g of protein. I'm smack bang on 80kg.

Some days my food intake doesn't contain much protein, but generally I get 40-80g of protein from food.

Just don't have the effort for large meals.

  • Went and got this yesterday, was $48 or 49 at checkout! even better

  • Does anyone know how INC Whey is compared to Optimum Nutrition? I have used Musashi before, it didn't mix well and upset my stomach.

    • ON is the absolute 🐐 when it comes to taste and mixing. Macros aren't amazing though.

  • Each to their own, but musashi protein mixes so much better than other brands. Yes I remember when this was only $40 on special, but it's still a good price for a good product.

  • -1

    40 on eBay thanks

    • +1

      Where is it 40?

  • Hodl. The ozbargain price used to be $40. So with the current price hike $45 is the good spot, not this price.

  • +1

Just adding my thoughts since I'm seeing a few protein deals here. If we're going by cost per serve, myprotein is probably your best bet. Combined with "CASHREWARDS" coupon for 40% off as well as 14% cashback (tonight only) means you can effectively purchase a discounted 5kg WPI for $131 (or 66c per serve). E.g. the choc brownie and salted caramel flavour have their 5kg at $254, 2.5kg at $138 and 1kg at $60 (before applying 40% + 14% off) https://au.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/impact-whey-isolat…

    • Musashi is better sourced (NZ not EU), and it's cheaper per KG for comparable size.

      • That's why I said per serve. Musashi is 88c per serve whereas Myprotein is 71c per serve (after coupon and cashback) for the comparable size.

        • The serves are different sizes.

          • +1

@Wolfenstein98k: Yes and to be fair this is an apples to oranges comparison bc I just realised the musashi product is a WPI/WPC blend. Different serving size but also more protein per gram for WPI.. I'll post my comment on the INC WPI post which is a more direct comparison. Thanks.

      • +3

Musashi is a Chinese company.. NZ labelling laws are dodgy. I’d avoid.

        • NZ whey is world-leading. Google "Fonterra".

  • +1

Fantastic product. NZ sourced whey, nice flavours that aren't extreme in any way, and a digestive enzyme (papain) that makes it easier on the butt (and the gut).

And the price is great per KG.

    Get it!

  • I've only tried Musashi protein bars, but usually use something standard like Optimum nutrition for my protein powder as I remember they passed protein/amino spiking data back in the day and personally the branding is more reliable.

    Musashi- 33 servings x 24g of protein = 792g of protein for $52.79
    ON - 75 servings x 24g of protein = 1800g of protein for $95.36 (amazon S&S)

Optimum Nutrition comes better in value per protein.

    • +1

The information page is incorrect for Musashi, it's swapped the serving size and number of serves (actually 60 serves). You're still right though, although as others have said this one really does mix well.

    • This is definitely cheaper than ON.

  • +2

I've always thought Musashi was trash (their ZMA & Pre Workout are laughably underdosed).
So surprised to see the rave reviews. Maybe I'll give them one more try.

edit: from a glance their 'High Protein' isn't that high compared to other brands.

    • +1

      100% Whey is higher protein.

  • Could someone explain how to take this ? If you go to gym, you must take it to build muscle ? Or after taking it, you can skip meals to lose weight etc ..thanks

    • +1

You need between 1 and 2 grams of protein each day per kg of body weight and towards the upper end of that range if you train hard at the gym. It is hard to eat that much protein unless you eat a lot of meat every day. A supplement like whey can help make sure you get enough protein. A diet tracking app on your phone can be a good way to see of you get enough protein from your diet without supplements.
