Essentially clueless in the PC world but in the market for something that can handle graphics-is this a decent machine?

    • +7

      Yes, very decent

    • +1

What kind of graphics? As in editing?

      • +1

        yeah editing

        • Just make sure the colour accuracy of the screen is what you need.

    • +3

Overkill if you aren't going to game on it as it's essentially a desktop replacement with shorter battery life, you can get thin and light ones with Xe/Xe MAX graphics (eg. Zenbooks, Dell XPS, Lenovo Yoga) for editing/rendering.

      • These GPUs maybe more suitable for heavy rendering tasks or running AI models.

But yea agree with getting lighter machines which can last longer if desktop replacement is not required.

  • +1

I wish the m17 was closer to these prices

  • Can I run Path of Exile smoothly on this?

    • +1

I have the m15 R5 3060 one and can run PoE just fine at full 165 fps. Temps were hitting 90ish though, but I unlocked power options in the registry and disabled turbo boost and now only hit 60-65 degrees on CPU and GPU and still maintain 165 fps solid. So yes, it definitely can run it smoothly.

I was juicing hard too. Double/triple beyond, 5 deli orbs, etc. No issues

    • They only have FHD screens, those specs at that resolution - Yes, it will run smoothly on high settings. (Also this, of coarse, depends upon how juiced your maps are)

  • How are these for Premiere Pro or Davinci?

    • +2

One of the best laptops you can get. These are heavy boys though compared to like an apple. The only other thing here is the screens are 1080p, which may not work for your editing - if you want to see the 4k quality of what your editing etc.

The reality is your always impacted by form factor though. A desktop PC will smash them in performance. A full size 3080/3070 is like as long as a laptop these days and three+ times as thick.

    • +5

Worth noting that the youtube review was prior to the bios update that unlocked the mux switch, so it's performance is a lot better now than in the review. Bios update easy enough to run with the alienware command centre update thingo

  • Any experts out there might answer my question? I bought an Alienware laptop with gtx 1070 3 years ago. Link

Is it worth upgrading to this? I've checked gpuuserbenchmark sites and they seem point to 20-70% increase in performance - not sure if that's saying much… Link

    • +3

Are you running into performance issues with any games you play?

If you are the 3000 series is a far improvement over the 1000 and brings ray tracing to the table, so it's a tangible upgrade. But if you don't need it due to performance issues the 1070 is still a capable piece of kit and the 4000 series is not too far away. If you can wait I would.

      • Witcher 3 lags, and running anything above 60fps onto 2k external monitor lags as well…so I keep things below 60 fps and use the FHD monitor (felt like I wasted money on the 2k 144hz monitor).

Oh had read that 4000 series on laptop would take a bit longer than the desktop versions?

        • +3

You're right 4000 series is not right around the corner. I'm not on top of the scuttlebut about how big a jump in performance is expected, so not sure how that trade off looks.

It's up to you, if you're frustrated buy now. The 3060 seems to be a moderate improvement over the 1070 (20%ish?) so I wouldn't be targeting that as an upgrade if you want one today.

  • I almost bought it yesterday, but then watched some more reviews from real customers and gave up. The build quality is not as good as it should be. I'll wait for a Legion 5 model with similar price.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piUUB-rVVQ4

    • agreed. "Alienware" m15 is more like what Inspiron G5 / G7 used to be. Alienware is no longer "cream of the cream" unless you go to Alienware x series.

tempting price for 3070, and performance is good, but it's nothing like old Alienware used to be.

      • -1

Alienware x series is never on sale, not real sales. So, goodbye Dell!

        • yeah I used to be a Dell fan (and reseller) but not worth the time and trouble anymore

    • Love my legion 5i pro, went with the 3070 model. It absolutely rips!

    • You can currently get the gen6 Legion 5 Pro with the 3070 for $2197 using the SAVE code and lenovo rewards (you get $102 in lenovo rewards for creating a new lenovo account at the moment).

I was tossing up between the 3070 M15 R5 model here. ~$397 difference. The Legion 5 Pro has double the RAM and double the HDD space with, what I feel, a better monitor (taller, brighter) and better build quality.

To upgrade the M15 R5 to match the Legion 5 Pro would be 2x89 (DELL comes with 2x 8 so you'd need to replace both with 16gbs and 89 seems about the price) for RAM and about 90-100 to replace the 500gb ssd with a 1tb, you could just put in another 500gb though I guess (if the M15 R5 has a second NVME slot? not sure). That leaves about ~$130 which you could chalk up to upgrading the build quality & monitor.. but yeah.

With all the above said, you could just.. not upgrade it at all and still have a 5800h 3070 laptop for 397 less haha.

That said, you can also get 14% cash back too atm, which would bring it to 1889.42 if they honour the sale.

      • -1
        1. The $102 is not showing up in the cart. What should I do to apply this discount?

        2. How can I see those 14% cash back? When I go to my cashrewards and click 'shop now', it takes me to the Lenovo's website, but there is nothing showing it is working.

        3. 'My Lenovo Rewards' says it is $153 in rewards with this purchase. Btw, which kind of rewards?

You may not be eligible for Cashback:
If a coupon code is used that is not listed on Cashrewards.

The SAVE coupon is not listed… does that mean it will not be eligible for the cashback?

        • the 102 shows in your rewards when you make a new account, if you don't see it ask chat - the 153 comes when you purchase it, so it's money off next purchase not this one. That isn't the full cashrewards spiel about coupons, read the whole section - but also, as I said, I don't have confirmation that they will honour it.

          The next sentence:
Cashback is however eligible on codes generated by Lenovo on its website, even though they may not be listed on Cashrewards, provided last click before purchase is from Cashrewards.

          • @lulzenberg: That 14% is gone. IT was just till the 28th. Now it's 9%. It's like $114 difference. Deal breaker, I think. Good that I'll save my money. haha

            • @Nefe: They have been 2,064.31 before back in march, but that was 16gb ram vs 32 and 512gb ssd vs 1tb. I'd expect to seem them possibly come down to that again at some point.

              • @lulzenberg: True! I missed it for some minutes! I think those differences are worth the $140 difference. I was able to talk to the support and they told me the reward would appear only on step 2, payment, of the final purchase. For $1889 it would've been a really good deal. Much better than this Alienware. Let's wait a bit more, then. Thanks for your help

  • hope they will have more space to drop price further, would say if this can go down to $1399 for the 3060 will be a better bargain …

    • Likely, it was 1499 a month ago and with the new RTX4xxx series coming out later in the year.

  • +1

can I play original Counter Strike on this?

    • Yep.

    • +2

the frames per second will be.. over 9000

  • I found this review to be pretty decent and much easier on the ears and eyes to listen to..
    https://youtu.be/9NyGzjuydLk

I ended up buying it because the price point seemed right.

  • This is a great price. Good specs and Alienware build quality at this price can’t really be beat. I paid $1400 odd for a returb not long ago so this is a steal.

  • I ordered the M15 3070 last week (still hasn't shipped) when the previous deal was active, now it's $100 cheaper!

Has anyone had any success invoking the Dell price guarantee for ebay purchases?

(I know another option is to cancel the order and re-order on the new price)

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/lp/price-match-guarantee-anz

    • +2

They won't. Just cancel and reorder.

    • just cancel, provided it hasnt shipped should not be a problem
But allow a week+ to get your cash back

    • +1

Just send em a msg asking for the difference back and if they cant do it then please cancel the order.

I did this for a monitor through Dell eBay and got the difference back:

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Our prices are subject to change without prior notice on eBay thus we generally do not provide partial refunds in the event of price changes. Nonetheless, we were able to seek approval from our Head Office to honour the promo price for your order as a courtesy. This has now been processed on our end and the refund ID is ************.

The refund breakdown is also below:
Original Price after 20% coupon: AU $239.20
Current Price after 20% coupon: AU $208.00
      Difference: $31.20

Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any questions.

      • +2

Yep, they have processed a refund for me for $100, that's great customer service! Thanks Dell.

    • Check your credit card if you paid with it, sometimes it comes with complimentary price difference guarantee so you can claim the difference

  • Get the i5 Intel with the 3060, it's same the price and as an owner of the Ryzen version, the quality control issues and poor optimisation were terrible.

    • +3

i had an 11700 and 5800h version and both had no issues
except the Ryzen battery life was a lot better

      • I ordered my unit within its first month of release, so the issues may be resolved, but I went through 3 units before returning them and getting a refund.

The issues I experienced are well documented, but essentially it boils down to the Alienware Command Center not being designed for the Ryzen chipset (hence why I recommend getting the Intel version). For my 3 models, if I uninstalled AWCC, they would run well, however I would have no lighting or cooling control, AWCC exclusively controls cooling and lighting. When AWCC was installed, at random times mid-way through gaming, or changing to an external display, or after restart, the lighting would shut off which I could live with, but the cooling would also completely shut off, causing them to overheat and crash.

Anyone looking to buy this model, feel free to do a quick search regarding this issue, and it is well documented. There seems to be posts on Reddit regarding this issue posted this year so it may still be a problem. Apparently there is a BIOS update that may fix this but I can't confirm.

  • A friend of mine recently bought an alienware with a 1tb SSD and they shipped it with 2 x 500gb ones instead which thought was pretty crappy if them.

  • this or m17 r5 with RX 6850M XT for $1.2k extra?

  • Do these sound like jet engines when gaming? Is the m17 better on that front?

    • every gaming laptop sounds like that, but bigger cooling in bigger laptops is usually a better thing

  • Is this IPS screen?

  • Legion 5 pro 16 (32GB, 1TB) for $2299 or this one?

    • if you make a lenovo account you should get $102 added as lenovo rewards to bring the price down to 2197 - possibly also pairable with the 14% cashback from cashrewards, but i've not got confirmation that it will be honoured with that price yet.

    • For 500$? I dont think its worth the difference.

You can grab 2x16gb 3200mhz sodimm for 178$ sell the old one to recoup some costs. Storage wise theres no shortage of bargain pcie 3.0 drive deals out there. The only thing objectively better on the Legion is the better screen. But again, 27' 2k165hz IPS/VA monitor with HDR support can be had for around $300 dollars in a sale, and will give you a better experience than the laptop screen can. Oh and the l5p have 10w extra on the 3070 but its low single digit % of performance increase at best.

  • Why is the shipping estimates late August to early September when the item is in Sydney and in stock? Jeez, that's rough.

    • Dells ebay shopping estimates are always like that. I would take it with a grain of salt.

  • btw same or better spec laptop from MSI gigabyte asusis already 1800 in market

    • link please? for MSI or ASUS for the 1800 price

  • I need a laptop cause I'm going on a very extended holiday. If I were to play general GTA V on this would it run properly?

  • I'm looking to replace my old MSI with NVIDIA 870m. Tempted with the Alienware 3070 or this
Any opinions and suggestions are welcome!

  • How many SSD slot?

If anyone else is wondering wtf is happening with their Dell ebay order, like when on earth it's being shipped etc….

You can contact Dell on ebay and they'll give you a detailed order tracking page on the Dell website. You can't access it without the unique order number that they should automatically give you (but don't : P), so contact them.

If you can't be bothered, just know that they are not just twiddling their thumbs while you wait… based on my order tracking page, they started processing the order the next day, it shipped out at 4 days and looks like it may arrive in about 2 weeks from order date.
