With rumours (and a recent teaser video) of a Gen2 X1 Fold, the Gen1 is finally heavily discounted. Reviews are mixed acknowledging first gen product let down by Windows 10 limitations but forums indicate Windows 11 is far more efficient on the limited hardware (don't let the "i5" name give a false sense of confidence) and the UI issues with splitting windows/buggy interface seem to be addressed. This model also ships with a Windows 11 Pro 64-bit image already installed (which addresses some of the issues people had upgrading from Windows 10). Whilst I have been eager to try this model out as a 5G-equipped folding laptop which is the size of an A5 notebook is very appealing, watching reviews again today made me pause as $2k is still a lot to spend on something which is very limited in performance and also with <6 hours of battery life with light usage. This might be a good deal for those who really do love trying new gadgets and have $2k to spend.

Big fan of MrMobile… his experience with this actually was a key factor in me deciding not to bother, even if the forum posts/Redditors indicate that it's largely fixed now in 2022.

  • what does everyone think of these?

I’m more excited for future revisions, I think they’ll end up being a great purchase in the future once they become more refined!

Very much a Gen 1 device, especially when it first came out. But also be aware that Lenovo - particularly when it comes to Thinkpads - works hard to keep their reputation strongly positive.

If you have the money to blow, give it a shot, otherwise wait a few generations for the line to mature.

Lots of potential, great concept, but I think it's very much a first generation product. It's something you could live with especially if you're an early adopter, but it's full of compromises and inconveniences too. Reminds me a bit of the first Surface Pro or Galaxy Fold… usually the 2nd and 3rd gen products are substantially better, and the 1st gen drop like a rock in value. At $1899 though, it's in the realm of possibility (vs $6k).

      • Thanks guys/gals. I work in the industry and am aware of Lenovo's reputation - both good and bad. We sell them and we have more faults than with Dell products. While it's definitely in the realm of "affordable for the novelty value alone", I avoid anything that could possibly cause me additional frustration.

That said and all things considered, it may not be as bad if I manage my expectations. hmm.

Has anyone actually purchased and used one yet? :D

Was $5699 with 8gb of ram and $512ssd wtf..

13 inch folding OLED and a first-of-its-kind design. Those pull a premium. Plus it's a couple of years old at this point.

Definately looks super-cool and great to show your techy friends but that's where it ends for me.

It does look cool as it looks like a diary until you unfold it.

    • +1

may not even function as a diary once you open it :P

  • That trackpad looks awful

  • +3

Even Apple is not crazy enough to have over $5000 rrp for a device with only 8gb of ram

  • +4

What a garbage CPU they're using, and only 8Gb.

$2000 lol. Is this a joke?

  • 8gb in 2022 on Windows.

Name an alternative folding oled tablet.

      • Shitty performance is shitty performance, foldable or not. IMO folding screens suck anyway because you've got those wavy distortions where it folds.

It's fair to expect good performance at this price. $1000 seems about right to me for this, and that's just because it's sort of unique. Definitely not $2k, lol.

We use hp's at work and this is 25% slower than the ancient hp 8300's from 2012!!

        They use [email protected].

        https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i5-L16G7-vs-Intel…

Windows is going to run like dogshit with that CPU so who cares if it's foldable. It's just a better screen to watch a spinning hourglass on.

      • Not exactly a apple to apple challenge, but a alternative design concept

        ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold OLED

Don't know when will it be available in AU.

        • Sep

        • Now that looks like much more bang for your buck.

    keyboard and pen sold seperately.

    • I honestly thought that was included… until you posted your comment.
      https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/accessories-and-software/keyb… $599 - ouch!

    • +1

Are you sure? I thought Aussie spec (and the one included on this listing since we on my eve had one SKU here) includes both the keyboard and pen (as well as 5G WWAN built in). The US from memory had multiple SKUs with different inclusions.

You can buy replacement keyboards and pens hence why they’re listed for seperate purchase too.

      • You make a good point… listing does state it includes the keyboard and pen… you are correct.
