I literally just bought one 2 days ago, reckon Apple can retrofit this deal for me or should I do the old swap dies and refund it and buy another one ?

    • Only one way to find out..

    • +18

14-day return policy on basically anything purchased from Apple even if opened. As long as it's not damaged. Just return it and buy another. They can use the return as a credit on the new purchase at a store if you don't want for the refund to go back to your original payment method.

    • yes just return and get another one.

    • +10

I bought an Apple TV on Friday.
Just went in and asked Apple if I could have the gift card and they just gave it to me.
      No return required.

      • +6

This way. Honest, without fraud and positive outcome.

        • This is the way

  • Thank you op. Bought one.

  • +5

Rumours that there may be a new Apple TV released later this year, though, no details, and may just be a spec bump. Great deal otherwise.

  • Ok so, this is, pay $249 or $279, and get a gift card for $70, for free.

This is not, get $70 off an Apple TV, because that would be too good.

Anyway, if you buy from Apple often, or were planning to buy something else from them AND this, sure, can't find anything better online really.

    • +11

You can use Apple gift cards on the iTunes/App Store now.

    • Get gift card and sell online ?

    • +1

The one buying this, likely won't mind to have $70 apple gift card anyway

    • +6

It may as well be $70 off if you have subscriptions anyway like Apple Music, Apple Premier One, or any other in app subscriptions.

      • -1

        Netflix afaik

        • Netflix via iTunes not available to new subscribers but still offered for people who joined via that method.

          • @twitch1979: Apparently if you go through their games you can get an in app sub again

            • @isaidhey: That’s good to know. Do you have any details on that process?

  • +7

If ur not in a hurry, wait for another 2 days to stack with this?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/716240

    • thanks mate! not aware there is another apple gc promotion soon though. looks like the last one was not far ago

    • How would this work? This deal only works if you buy from coles but the Apple TV discount only works via apple.com.au or in an Apple Store?

      • +2

You load the Apple gift cards onto your Apple balance and select that payment method at checkout

At the same time, you can also use ShopBack for additional 5.5% cashback (if the upsized hasn’t ended yet)

        • i think the 5.5% cashback ends in about 2-3 hours

    • but then can we still get the 5.5% from shop back if we're paying with apple GC?

      • +1

SB didn’t state in their “Dont’s” and if it’s the same like CR, I would assume it’s safe to do so

      • Seems like it might work:

Will I still qualify for the regular store Cashback if I use a gift card to pay?
In most cases yes, however, some stores will invalidate your Cashback or calculate Cashback on the amount after gift card usage. If the Cashback is affected by gift card usage, this will be explicitly mentioned in the individual store’s terms and conditions.

      • +3

There is no harm trying to stack both.

Even if the 5.5% cashback doesn't work, at least you'll get the 20x flybuy points, which weighs more than the 5.5% cashback.
        If they stack, it's good.

        • don't think the stack will work because the 5.5% shopback ends just as the coles deal starts

        • Apple will deny the cashback if they give you a gift card.
They have never paid cashback on gift card promotions.

    • What a great find!

I’m being serious - I’m a massive apple fanboy - but isn’t an Amazon firestick 4K max just better value when they’re on sale?

    • +8

Better value yes, but your experience is ultimately determined by how entrenched you are in the apple ecosystem. If you are, the Apple TV is probably a better experience.

    • whats the plex experience on the firestick 4k I was tempted on the amazon prime day sale but then quick research mentioned a few issues with them.

      • I’ve not had any issues with Plex on my Firestick 4K max. Can’t compare it to the Apple TV as I don’t have one, but it’s far better than the app on my Samsung TV

      • +1

I have an Apple TV 4K, and got a Firestick 4K Max recently.
The biggest issue I found is that the Firestick cannot direct play TrueHD and will transcode it. Everything else seemed fine. This was using the official Plex app.
It's a seriously amazing value little device.

        • Might have to give it a try -

    • +4

If you’re a fanboy and have AirPods this is a serious game changer. Spatial audio works, I can switch to my phone if an incoming call comes and it pauses the tv automatically, control pause play from AirPods.

All the Apple content looks amazing.. I could go on.

      • +5

I've been seriously tripped out by special audio before. Thought my AirPods weren't working and the audio was coming from the tv in front of me. In a good way, hah

        • +6

Man the amount of times I’ve apologised thinking I’m playing the sound loud on the iPad and my wife has turned and said “what?” - it’s soo trippy.

      • In what regard? Only 2 things Apple does better in my opinion is screensaver (too many options) and you can play games that are well designed. To be honest I have to setup Plex recently to test out things in depth. E.g. where Alexa / fire tv is better. Connect dot with fire tv and say “Alexa play x on youtube.” Works like a charm. On Google you have to say “youtube video” and start with “hey Google”. I don’t have Apple dot products so Amazon set all the way. Surely Amazon is selling my data somewhere. When I rate smart device, fire tv #1 price and quality, Google next then Apple good quality product but highly priced. $40 fire tv vs $280 Apple TV. Feels aauch.

    • +2

I despise Apple, you could call me an anti-fanboi… But the Apple TV is my favourite device at home. My firesticks have been relegated the the bedrooms. You can't compare the experience between the two. The only advantage the firestick has (other than price) is Kodi.

      • +1

I find infuse to be better than kodi although it is paid. Mrmc is also a option and is a kodi fork (and also paid), but I’m not sure what the support for plugins is like if that’s what you’re after

        • Kodi add-ons and the work done to support them, makes it an elite product, even if it's a little rough on interface.

However, Apple TV for most people, as a streamer cannot be beaten IMO.

    • Well, price has its own delights, as my mother would say.
You could also say same about chromecast.

However, those devices are much more limited. The nearest equivalent is the Shield.
Now whether it is worth three times the price is a question only you can answer.

    • The Firestick is definitely better value, but I think if you have the extra $$$ to throw around the Apple TV is a better experience. If for no other reason than Apple TV apps tend to get better developer support than basically all other operating systems.

  • +1

Can stack with this deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/716240

extra $20 off for $200 gift card

    • -1

      Yes

    • Hopefully this deal will last two days ;)

  • We can use Apple gift cards as part of payment for a product (e.g. iphone) purchase from Apple website, is that correct?

    • +2

yes. the apple gift card is relatively new and is marketed as 'the gift card for everything apple'.

  • Is it the same as this? $199 for 4K32
    https://www.amazon.com.au/2021-Apple-32GB-5th-Generation/dp/…

Does anyone use this instead of their Smart TVs Google TV?

    • Ur link literally says "HD"… that's the second model on Op's description

      • thanks

    • Get Apple to price match

    • Only buy 4K versions.

  • hmmm tempting to get 4K 32gb - though is it worth the money if you have a smart Samsung Neo TV from this year?

    • +1

Depends on if you want to use the ATV AppStore. It is much better. And then there are the apple services if you access them.
If you are just steaming, no. In fact wait until Samsung is no longer updating your Tv and then see what is around.

      • +1

what apps are useful on the app store for apple tv?

  • What is Apple TV used for? I think Samsung Smart TV has it built-in?

  • Thanks OP, bought one.

  • Is this better than nvidia shield pro?

    • I'm not completely familiar with the TV unit world but I hear a huge plus of the Nvidia is its excellent upscaling.

    • both are pretty good. If you have other Apple devices an utter no brainer.
This is more powerful than a shield. But not as powerful as a console.

      • +1

how does this help with the iLife thing? I'm pretty knee deep in the eco but can't think of any way this would help, isn't it just a streaming platform?
putting aside the whole home hub thing which if you have a HomePod mini already then no need

    • Depends if you need TrueHD with Atmos? Shield.

My biggest annoyance is that YouTube on the Apple TV only appears as a casting endpoint from the iPhone App while it’s running on the AppleTV - with a Shield it’s always there whether it’s on or off.

I'm a big Apple fan but this is the only product I have returned. Its remote was awful compared with the original and the software integration at the time was suboptimal for skipping around Kayo. It might have improved, but I still didn't find it useful.

Edit: I think it was the previous 4k, so maybe they've improved in the new generation.

    • +6

New remote is much better than previous gen.

      • +1

I actually really like my touch remote. One I got the hang of it, it's quite neat to use.

        • +2

The new one is also touch - if you want to use it that way. Dedicated power button is also nice.

    • +1

and the software integration at the time was suboptimal for skipping around Kayo.

To be fair, Kayo uses their own steaming pile of shit interface for navigation instead of the Apple one, which makes it near impossible to skip and move about when watching anything. It's made me go back to the high seas for my F1 fix because they made the AppleTV experience so awful.

Not to mention that Kayo don't allow AirPlay so I can't stream the audio to my HomePods which I use as TV speakers.

  • For those who have smart home devices, this Apple TV 4K can perform as a Thread border router.

    • What's a Thread border router.? I googled it but still don't understand:-(

      • It can connect other “Thread” items to the Internet. But it doesn’t look at the data, it just passes it on.

  • As a long time apple user owning most latest apple devices including iphone, ipad pro, macbook pro, macbook air and mac studio
I still can't justify owning a Apple TV with that price tag
been quite satisfy with Google TV and Amazon Firestick 4K (only using youtube, netflix and disney+)

    • +7

Owning both Google TV and Apple TV I can safely say, once you go Apple TV, you won’t go back. I would suggest you to check it out, where you can compare both side by side. Google TV UI is a lot slower and gets frustrating when I use it once in a while.

      • Google TV is less than half the price of this. More apt comparison is with a Nvidia Shield.

        • +2

My reply was in regards to justifying the price tag in comparison to low budget devices. It is justified when you see/feel the huge improvement in user experience

      • +1

        Thanks mate
Bought the 64gb to test it out

Still got my 1st Apple TV sitting in the garage
Hopefully this can last a bit longer LOL

Also, saw that tvOS 16 will add support to Nintendo Switch Pro controller, keen to play some games with the trial Apple Arcade

    • +1

Lol, Apple TV is quite literally the only Apple product worth the RRP.

  • So to watch TV you switch from HDMI to TV right?

Can HBO Max be installed in Aus on ATV?

    • +1

So to watch TV you switch from HDMI to TV right?

      Yes

Can HBO Max be installed in Aus on ATV?

Yes, I run it. Need US Apple ID (You can use same Australian mobile number as your primary ID to create US ID) to download the app. Sign in as secondary profile on Apple TV. Then set up DNS

      • Thanks for the reply.

We've been mainly on the HBO Max recently.

Are the DNS settings set per profile or the device?

Could work well, as we find ourselves switching between US and Aus versions of services some times. I might give it a shot.

        Cheers

        • Are the DNS settings set per profile or the device?

Device wise. If you have something like Getflix then the DNS settings only apply to the apps and regions set in your Getflix account. Rest of the apps run as default Australian region.

Could work well, as we find ourselves switching between US and Aus versions of services some times.

This method will be set and forget. Just run the app and ready to go. You won’t even have to be on US profile.

  • Thanks OP got one

(I do not remember exactly when but I know it was in the last 5 years.)
Wife wanted to buy a new iPad. Good news was there was a promo and, if I remembered correctly, if we buy an iPad we get $20 voucher which we can use at an Apple shop.
Before we bought it, I asked the Apple sales lady if I can convert the voucher into iTunes card. She said no. The voucher can only be used to purchased in store items, like charger, cable, case, etc. Wife and I shrugged, oh well. So we proceeded with the purchase and the same lady handed us the receipt for the iPad. Next, she handed a docket for the $20 voucher to me.
"Is there anything else I can help you," she asked.
I handed back the $20 voucher she gave me and I said, "I want to buy a $20 iTunes card."
"Ok," she said and she gave me a $20 iTunes card.
My wife walked out of the Apple shop that day totally confused.

    • +2

These days the Apple gift Card works across the apple store, the App Store, iTunes, etc etc etc.

So you don’t need to be confused.

      • Wife wanted iTunes card because she was going to give it as a gift.

  • +1

I think the new Apple TV which supports HDMI2.1 and apple music lossless is coming soon.

    • It supports lossless but it resamples everything to 24/48.

Hopefully they enable some kind of bit depth/sample rate switching to support up to 24/192.

      • Yes, Apple TV 4K currently doesn’t support Hi-Res Lossless (sample rates greater than 48 kHz).

        • You didn’t say Hi-Res. You just said lossless in your original post.

24/48 ALAC is still very much lossless and likely more than adequate for everyone except the most golden of golden ears. The bigger issue is the resampling that takes place.

    • +1

I thought the current one was already 2.1?

      • +1

        It is, but still limited

Support for up to 4K 60-fps HDR video output and Audio Return Channel (ARC or eARC) only. Requires HDCP when playing protected content and compatible TV or Receiver.

  • Can you get free to air tv on Apple TV? The usual 7,9,10,sbs
