Description sourced from: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/711318

3 month minimum is effectively $297 for 60k QFF points (plus a SIM card you may/may not use). You may be charged a 4th month, but $396 for 60k points is still good value.

60,000 bonus Qantas Points on the $99 Qantas Promo Plan will be awarded as a one-time transfer at end of month 3 from your service activation date.

Good way to get points without signing up for another credit card.

Not a bad deal if you port out o Optus and then after 3 months port back in to Telstra to get JBhi credit deals.

    • +3

The only bad thing about it being Optus and their abhorrent customer service.

Tried to port in, wouldn't work. Received an SMS to call a number to provide more info, it is a recorded message, no option to provide more info. After a frustrating 3 days and 11 phone calls to get a service up and running, I gave up.

      • +4

Totally agree. Their store will mess around with you by telling you that there is nothing they can do to help you to activate your SIM and tell you to contact their online customer service representative which is the one tells you to visit a store for help when you can’t activate online in the first place.

        • This.

They screwed around with me the first time they ran this Qantas deal, so I made a complaint. They caved and gave me $600 account credit on my existing Optus account, as compensation for their f u c k-up.

      • I've migrated to Optus via their online self service and my esim is active now. Maybe their system is more reliable.

        • I started off online. Wouldn't work. Their support staff don't listen. Their online chat staff don't listen.
          Optus=WOFTAM.

      • Also, a lot of the spam texts and calls if you've ever been with Optus…

        • Now that you mention it, since moving to Vodafone 2 months ago, the spam calls from china have completely stopped! I wouldn’t have thought it had anything to do with the provider, but it seems like it. I was receiving calls almost every day

      • Plus any sim with Optus they add a credit limit as active and never close it even after you leave them.

  • If this was instant points it would be a great alternative to buying points

  • +22

No international roaming and no international calls on a plan which targets frequent flyers!… Great idea Qantas

    • cant agree more….i think its a mistake

    • Genuine question, is that all still relevant now with other options using the internet?

      • +2

Need it for receiving SMS messages from your bank when topping up internet banking, making purchases overseas, etc.

        • +1

I think you still get incoming messages. Atleast i did with Telstra JB plans which were similar

          • @h2g2: This. You can still turn on roaming and receive SMS for free. It’s just $10 per day to have unlimited* roaming while OS. Same as Telstra. Voda is $5.

      • It’s all about the 60,000 Qantas points - without that it’s a terrible plan in terms of voice and data inclusions v cost

  • Don't mind paying for 3 months, but why would they charge for the 4th month if cancelled before the start of the 4th cycle?

    • +6

Points awarded at end of month 3, at which point you would be already charged for month 4 and there is no pro rata refund.

    • +3

Be very careful - the $99 - 60,000 point plan does Nov include international calls. If you buy the $79 you will not get 60,000 points

  • +6

You need to pay for 4 months to get the points, not 3.

  • Not even going to use the SIM, I'm just happy to buy the points lol.

  • +2

So this is about the points? because every few months they do 500gb/mth for$65, no contact.

    And it's currently $69 for 220gb.

You'd be better off applying for a points credit card. We got 90k qff for a $39 card St George card.

    • +7

Not everyone is in the position to sign up to a points CC (or an additional one if they already have several). It could be argued that getting additional CCs to meet minimum spend can lead to excessive discretionary spending. $400 max for 60k points would be a good deal, and further reduced depending on how much you are spending on your phone plan already.

      • -6

Not everyone is in the position to sign up to a points CC

Well obviously not if they're wasting $99/mth in a phone plan 😋

It was more what is the point of the post. It's apparently the points.

        • +1

People who want both/all the points offers that come up (not just this one).

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Yep, it would help on the long road to Points Club Plus.

Also for retirees who often struggle to get approved for credit cards, even if they have substantial assets.

    • +3

CC deals are often better, but you can churn credit cards and also do this deal. Pretty great deal if you already pay for a premium phone plan.

    • Yes CC deals are definitely better but sometimes the spending requirement can be a burden. Requirement for 60k QFF points is usually 'spend $2k in 3 months' but some people don't usually spend that much money so they can't meet the requirement.

      • 3k in 3 month if ur lucky on average now its going up to 4 and 5k.

    • -4

Not to mention the burden on your credit rating…

      • +1

I've been doing 2-3 cards a year plus some mortgages and refinances, for the past 7 or 8 years and my credit rating is going very strong. Not that much of a burden.

        • +1

Just did pre-approval for a mortgage, got a laugh out of the person at the bank when they looked at how many credit cards I go through and they knew exactly why.

Most important part is having a low credit card limit when applying for the loan (not balance, limit itself). Mortgage broker told me knocking $20k off my card limit would up my borrowing cap by $80k.

          • @freefall101: This is reassuring as I churn and churn and plan to apply for my first ever mortgage next year. Can I ask what bank just so I know what works and doesn't in case one knocks me back.

      • +3

Credit rating pretty much means nothing in Australia. Don't believe the BS.

        • -2

          Bull.
          Im 69
I tried to borrow 400k and have 4 mil in assets and they said I had to cancel my plat charge card!!or they would only give me 200k I said shove it

    • +1

Oot, but how do you only pay $39 fee for this?? Interested. Isn't it the annual fee is $279?

    • Why not both?

    • Nothing is stopping you from doing both and you can only put in so many credit card applications a year lol. Even if you don't use the QFF points yourself you can easily sell them for a profit. If you sell the QFF points you're basically getting paid ~$200 to hold an Optus SIM for 3-4 months. If you actually use the plan then you'll gain even more since you save on the costs of your existing mobile plan.

    • Which St George card are you referring to…never seen such a good points offer on a $39 card…

  • Tried this and its telling me that my FF number doesnt meet qantas records..

    • Yes I've had this problem as well, very frustrating!

  • +1

    Can you do multiple services?

  • Does anyone know if I will lose my Telstra member points if I port over to Optus?

    • Would say in terms

    • More than likely you would loose the points. Technically you wouldn't be a Telstra customer anymore. Unless you have other services on your account

    • +3

No, they're valid for 12 months without an active service. However, I don't think you can order anything on the Telstra reward store without an active service. You can work around this with a prepaid sim.

      • +1

I ordered a few belong starter packs with no active telstra service.

    • Dunno how I did it, but I have a credit with Telstra of about $20 and as a result my account has stayed "active" for almost 3 years now. I don't have any services signed up when I log in but they send me a bill each month telling me they'll direct debit $0 against my account, I get texts telling me to claim my credit that I ignore, and I was able to do things like their care package with $15 off doordash, claim the 10k points for linking my account and the covid vaccine points.

  • +1

$79 has international roaming and $99 no international roaming….not sure what the intent is

    • I think it's poorly explained in the website.
They all probably have international roaming bit the $79 plan has a roaming package with an allowance for international use
The other plans will be pay for what you use

  • +1

Can we do this one on top of having the qantas deal from earlier?

    I'm guessing not…

'Limit to one $99 Promo Plan per QFF number.'

    • But it says limited to one per QFF number during promotion period…so i reckon if they let you proceed, they have to honour it.

      • According to live chat it needs to be done in store, they didn't give a reason why hmm

        • So you have to go in store in order to get the deal a second time? I can submit it in the portal, wondering if it's worth just doing it and then arguing the terms later if they try to weasel out.

  • Any restrictions on claiming this offer a second time?

60,000pts is easily worth the $297

  • Am I missing something or do you only get 5k points per quarter?

Qantas Points will be earned in installments of 5,000 points at the end of every 3rd month from your service activation date if you stay continuously connected, up to the maximum total of bonus points offered on your plan. For example, if your plan includes a total of 10,000 points, you’ll receive 5,000 points at the end of month 3, and another 5,000 points at the end of month 6 as long as you stay on the plan continously. Qantas Points may take up to 7 days to appear in your account.

You’ll also earn Qantas Points per $1 spent on your monthly plan fee. These points will appear in your account within 7 days of payment. For example, the $59 Qantas SIM Only plan earns you 5 points per $1 spent, so you will be awarded 295 Qantas Points per month. Please note: plan add-ons won’t contribute to your Qantas Points per $1 earned and your points will be forfeited if you cancel your plan before points are awarded.

    • Okay it looks like the $99 plan has a separate fulfilment setup:

Bonus Qantas Points affiliated with the $99 Qantas Promo Plan will be awarded as a one-time point allotment. You are eligible to receive your points when you stay connected for 3 months from your service activation date. Points may take up to 7 days to appear in your account.

    • +1

I read here the 60k is a one off allotment

      https://offer.optus.com.au/qantas?utm_source=qantas&utm_medi…

    • +1

You missed scrolling down a bit

"When will I receive my 60,000 bonus Qantas Points?
Bonus Qantas Points affiliated with the $99 Qantas Promo Plan will be awarded as a one-time point allotment. You are eligible to receive your points when you stay connected for 3 months from your service activation date. Points may take up to 7 days to appear in your account."

  • I'd prefer the Credit Card points - than having a mobile plan for 200GB that I will never use.

At least the card is not 'locked' into just one thing… using data or a call or two.

    • +1

but the 60k makes the mobile plan essentially free. And you can port back out to a cheaper plan after 3 month.

      • What is 60k quantas points worth? I don't to sell. Just use it for gift card or flight.

        • +1

Old day it should be $600, not sure about the current market and Qantas reputation.

          • @od810: Optus paid me $600 as compensation for the 60K Qantas points so your value is correct. 1 cent per point basically.

Obviously as other comments say, what worth you get out of it depends on whether you go for GCs, the Qantarse Store, flights etc etc

        • quick look on reward store it's about $260-280 woolies gc you get with 60k. But I think when they have gc discount, you might get over $300 for 60k points which means the 4 month would cost 20-25 bux a month.

Also the added advantage, if you wfh or business, you can claim the whole or portion of $99 x 4, instead of a $25 plan.

        • +1

The value of Qantas points varies but generally gift cards provide the worst value and business/first class flights offer the best.

For example, a business class Sydney to Singapore flight is 68,400 points + $233 in taxes. The cheapest Qantas sells that fare for in dollars is $2628. That's about 3.5c of value per point.

A $250 Apple gift card on the Qantas Store will cost you 48,250 points. That's about 0.5c of value per point.

          • +1

@VantageXL: but that's if you value first or business class. Seems like a luxury item. Where as gc, you need to buy grocery regardless.

            • @Frozensage: Even economy flights offer vastly better value than gift cards. The only time gift card redemptions make sense is if you’re desperate for money or have no intention to ever fly anywhere.

          • @VantageXL: Nkt keen on asian countries. I would like to have business class to colombia or USA. I think last time I checked it was around 250k or something.

            • @shegeloaf: That was just an example. It’s 108,400 points for Sydney to Los Angeles in business class. You can use the Qantas points calculator to find out how many points it takes to go to other places too.

        • Flight… Last few months ago I booked a Classic flight to Philippines = I used my points 50,400 to pay for a ticket equivalent to a $699 return flight.

  • +2

Lol got $600 credit on my Optus account as compensation for the lost 60,000 Qantas points. Cos customer reps stuffed up in getting me to sign up so I couldn't in the end.

  • why is it better to use points for flights rather than gc? is it cause the conversion rate?

    • +1

      Yes

      • so I could find a cheap fare on jetstar, eg: buy one get one free, and then use points to pay?

        • You need to redeem them for reward seats on flights, if you use points to pay for a standard fare/seat the conversion will be much worse.

          • @eecan: so if I say a reward seat costs 5000 pts, and I could pay for same route for $200 on a jetstar, is that where you make the comparison on better conversion? Like most of the time I'm flexible when and who I fly with, I just need to go from A to B at the cheapest price. Maybe I should just use the pts on giftcards next time there's a reward store discount?

            • +1

@Frozensage: Flight redemption will always have a better conversion rate than anything else because it doesn't cost the airline as much to put an extra bum on the plane. That 2pm flight will depart regardless of how many people are on the plane (unless they cancel it), might as well let someone burn some points to be on it.

$143 SYD to BNE Jetstar flight will cost 6400 points + $36 fee. That's less than 60 points per dollar. With gift cards you need about 200points per dollar.

  • can i sign up the offer for two different numbers to get 60,000 *2 = 120,000 points please?

    • Limit to one $99 Promo Plan per QFF number.

So it will works only if you have other family members who you could use their name and QFF number.

    • probably need 2 QFF numbers

  • +1

Do they actually run a credit check when you apply for a QF Optus Plan ?

    • Yep

    • Someone said last deal they do an external check for new customers and internal check for exisiting customs. No experience myself though.

    • @thibaultn Any idea if this is a soft or hard enquiry? I'm a 21 y/o uni student looking to apply for a credit card in the next month, to build credit in anticipation of securing a home loan in the next 12 months. I don't have a credit history so have a default score of 843 according to the soft-check systems I've used previously, but don't want to risk a hard enquiry over a phone plan I'm not going to use other than the 60K QFF.

      • +1

I think it would be a hard enquiry. I have not applied - sorry I can not provide any further info.
60k for a credit check entry is too low anyway.
