St.George Amplify Qantas Platinum Card: $0 1st Year Fee for Existing Customer, Save $99 (+ Bonus 60,000 Qantas Points)

891

60,000 Bonus QFF Points with $3,000 Spend in 90 Days

Good little card for those of us that like a bit of the ol' churny churn. First year annual card fee waived for existing St George customers, gotta apply before 30 June 2022.

Better than it was a few months back, now that they've made it $0 annual fee for the first year. Not as good as their $2000 in 3 months spend that they came out with in 2020, but I'll take it.

Rates and fees
$0 card fee for the first year ($99 thereafter)
0.5 point earned for every dollar spent on eligible purchases
19.49% p.a. low variable interest rate on purchases
21.49% p.a. variable cash advance rate

Existing customers who currently hold an Amplify, Amplify Platinum or Amplify Signature card issued by St.George, Bank of Melbourne or BankSA, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.

    Just to clarify:
    - $99 annual fee (including first year) applies, UNLESS you are an existing customer (according to OP - I don't see this in the link)
    - Existing customers who currently hold an Amplify, Amplify Platinum or Amplify Signature card issued by St.George, Bank of Melbourne or BankSA, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.

Also it doesn't say anything about a $50 fee for Qantas point reward, I thought they all charge that now?

    • +1

No they don't all charge $50 fee for Qantas point rewards, so I'm presuming that only Westpac does that for now?

It says it in the link under "Existing Customer Offer section" - :No card fee for the first year (saving $99)"

      • +1

        "Existing Customer Offer section"

Maybe this only shows up if you're logged in? ctrl-f finds only the 'not eligible' bit re. existing customers

        • I'm not logged in at all. Very strange. It displays for me on Chrome but on Edge you're right, it's not there!

          • @adrianhughes1998: using firefox atm. weird

maybe clearing chrome cache will make it disappear?

            • @andresampras: Worked it out.

So I never ever use Edge, logged into my existing internet banking then logged back out. Refreshed the page in Edge, and voila, it shows.

Must be for existing customers then.

              • @adrianhughes1998: Are the URLs slightly different? This works for the westpac deals. Ie. Someone posted the member only link. If you click thr link it takes you to a sign up page. However, I noticed the promo code on the end of the url was slightly different. Typed it in and i got the Westpac offer without being a member.

  • Not as good as the NAB 120,000 deal unless you’re an existing customer.

    • Agreed, some of us might be. I've got a Vertigo with them so hoping I can qualify for the annual fee waive.

      • +1

Oh absolutely. Just saying if you’re churning and not an existing customer it might be worth holding
off for at least 90-120k points.

        • +2

Definitely mate. Unfortunately I've just got the 100K NAB with pro-rata refund closed last month, and St George is the earliest in my queue that I closed way back in late 2020. Time to start it all over again haha!

    • +2

Can’t seem to find this one via search. Still live?

      • I am in the same boat. Tried looking up - can't find it

      • +1

        It’s this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/699284

You get to the 12 month mark, get the 30k bonus and then claim a pro rata refund on your second year fee.

        • +1

Why wait 12 months, just get the pro rata refund on your first year fee

          • +1

@Nuggets: Because you only get the 30k bonus points after you tick over into the second year. You wait until you get the 30k points, and then cancel.

            • +1

@JSONBourne: I guess the question is whether the 30,000 points is worth the extra money spent on the AF plus extending the timeframe of when you will again be eligible for a NAB card. For me, the answer is no.

            • +1

@JSONBourne: $295 for 30,000 points is not a great trade tbh

              • @Drakesy: It’s $300~ for 120,000 points.

                Year 1 - $295 for 90,000 points
                Year 2 - $10 for remaining 30,000 bonus points (pro-rata refund)

                • @JSONBourne: It'll be closer to $125 for 90,000 points pro rata refund if you cancel in the first 4 months like I did
                  And $295 for $120,000 points

                  • @Drakesy: Why did you wait 4 months before cancelling? My understanding is you can do it within month 14 once the statement for month 13 is paid and the QP are deposited.

                    • +2

@JSONBourne: I waited 4 months to spend the initial $3k
Then received the pro rated refund bringing my total cost to $125/90,000 points or
                      720 points/dollar

If you wait 14 months you'll pay a minimum of $295/120,000 points
                      Or 407 points/dollar

                      Your call though

        • Thanks for the link. Super helpful. The annual fee ($295) still seems a bit high, pro rata refund might make it worthwhile.

  • +2

how do you get $0 annual fee?
its shows $99 annual fee for me from the link you posted

    $99 Annual card fee
0.5 Qantas Points Per dollar on eligible purchases, up to $100k p.a.1
19.49% p.a. Variable interest rate on purchases
Up to 55 days Interest free on purchases2
    $6,000 Minimum credit limit

    • +1

Yep keen to know. Literally half way through an application with BoM for $99 annual fee. Would be great to not pay that!

    • +2

how do you get $0 annual fee?

Opening a free st george account probably qualifies.

    • It says it in the link under "Existing Customer Offer section" - "No card fee for the first year (saving $99)"

      • seems we need to log in with existing Westpac account

      • Does the fee reduce for the Signature card or still $149?

  • +4

The approval process is horrible. Been more than 4 weeks asking documentations etc and then stuck with multiple profiles.

    • Makes you wonder how valid these ID checks are, doesn't it?

I had to go into a Westpac branch TWICE recently, because they somehow had two of me on their systems.

      • At least you can go to Westpac. I was advised that they don't have access to St George system, thus have to do Customer Identification Form and signed by eligible people. Then send via snail mail. Even so, they still cannot merge my profile into one. Been going on for more than a week now with this multiple profile issue.

        • ah yeah stg and westpac are linked!

The first time I went in, I sat there for half an hour while the guy and his equally confounded colleague banged away at the keyboard, finally exclaiming it was all sorted.

Of course I later found out it wasn't sorted, so I went to another branch. Where I sat with the branch manager for about an hour while she…get this….called the SAME NUMBER that all us plebs call, and had to wait in queue before finally sorting it out with the cranky person in the call centre.

          • @andresampras: I got an SMS and email from St George to say my credit card was ready to be picked up in branch - visited said branch during lunch time. Turns out they did not have my card and wanted more documents and ID. Weeks later, still no response. Screw St George.

            • @TheMindsetTraveller: That was my experience back in 2018 too.
Looks like they haven't improved. Makes you wonder how they are still around.

              • +1

@ShouldIBuyIt: I believe everyone who wasn't with SG before going to have this similar or worst experience. Back in 2019, had went to branch 3 times. First to find out what wrong with my application, they fixed it (2 applications magically created for me). Second went to pickup card and found not there even though got confirm letter it should pickup from there. Finally got the card on the third time. The teller there even asked me if i like to book for a discussion about my finances !!

Several cards with SG after that went very smoothly.

    • Agreed. Spent 4 weeks trying to get the last card, multiple documents and calls, found out it was hung up on a $600 LatitudePay account I forgot I had and had never used. After all that I still was rejected as I didn't have a closure letter for it. Got another card within hours elsewhere from a different bank. Not worth the effort with St George in my opinion. You might have a better experience but this is the worst banking corporation I have ever dealt with.

  • But no kayo

    • Yeah Kayo better

  • how much is 60k qatas points worth, need to check if its good offer ?

    • PointHacks values them at 1.8 cents per point currently, so that would make it worth $1080, if you use it ideally.

Best use of points is typically Economy Class or Business Class upgrades to a higher class, or Business Class / First Class flights. Obviously, Qantas Store is the worst redemption value, hotels is somewhere in between.

      • +1

Upgrades can be sketchy though I requested a Business Class upgrade from London back to Melbourne and missed out. I'm only a bronze FF though so probably got trumped by some Plats.

      • -1

Well, PointHacks would say that wouldn't they. It's totally subjective. In reality, "most" people wouldnt be able to realise 1.8c per point.

I just looked up a random flight to Europe in business to prove my point and holy hell, it's gotten worse!

MEL-MXP return on Qatar is now 318k points plus $1300.

You can find cash flights on special for $6k. Are you the sort of person that would pay $6k to fly business (instead of $1.5k in economy and have $4.5k to spend on your holiday)?

If you are, fair enough, that's 1.5c value.

Me? If someone was trying to sell me that flight I "might" pay $3.5k, so 0.7c value.

        You see. Totally subjective.

      • I definitely don't think it is nearly worth $1000. I regularly book my flights using Qantas points and I have about $200k sitting in my account. Merely for $55k points, I was able to book nearly $600 value of flight prices.

Amex sometimes have a deal of $150k points if you get referred. They are offering $100k points which is guaranteed $500 in value plus $400 travel credit in exchange of their $395 of annual fees. I reckon this is a much better deal than getting stuck with Qantas.

Given how expensive Qantas flights are these days (and their horrible customer service), you are much better getting $100 less but option to book ANY flight or pay off your statement balance with those points.

        • I've gotten near the 1.8 cents of value when booking my Fiji flights to and from Perth, so yes depends what you book and where you book and cabin class etc. You're not always gonna hit that 1.8cents of value, especially in this post - COVID climate. 1.8c is a yardstick of which to compare your redemption valuation against.

If other offers work like travel credit, then that's great. For others that don't travel as often, then perhaps sign up bonuses are better for them.

  • Any annual fee discount on the signature card?

    • Yep drops to $139 from $279.
But need to spend $6000 in 90 days and only get 90k points

  • +3

    WHAT'S THE POINT
Maybe you've noticed that Qantas reward points are easier to get these days and you only need to look at credit card applications, health insurance and much more. Why? Because they are less rewarding than they used to be. It is now impossible to fly business class from Melbourne to Europe using points. Invariably, the longest leg will be in economy and the routes are far from direct. The heavy promotion of frequent flyer points is a sham because the value is no longer there.

    Credit: https://www.traveller.com.au/traveller-letters-frequent-flye…

    • +2

There are lots of ways to use points though.

Cheap interstate economy flights for example. I find it worthwhile.

      • +1

I've used points for booking hotels during border lockdown.

    • Yeah and flight capacity isn't up to full, not all locations that Qantas used to fly to are open again internationally. Airlines across the world have taken massive hits, and COVID has ravaged the world and the economy for the last 2.5 years.

But yeah, it's a sham. It's totally a sham mate sarcasm. Of course value for points isn't going to be as good as it was pre-pandemic, and it won't be for at least a little while yet.

    • +1

I guess all the gadgets I’ve bought with Qantas points are worthless.
I should bin them and buy with cold hard cash for max value, yes?

  • What's the best frequent flyer Point card available at the moment excluding amex?

  • Only 60k points? Not worth getting out of bed for.
    Need 100k minimum

    • +3

For $0 if one is an existing customer, yeah it's worth it. Every little bit helps.

      • yeah ! and if you aim at point club plus, need 350k a year so few cards to go

  • Applied for a Bank of Melbourne/StGeorge (same group and near identical products) card earlier this year. Application process is alright, customer service is beyond trash. Cancelled the card within a month as they are too difficult to deal with. Not sure about other states, but if you're in Perth and have to deal with the single branch available, they are not great and I highly discourage applying. Extra card fees for a bigger bank are well worth it.

    • Results may vary. I'm also in Perth and have had three St George cards in last three years and it's been ok. Not the best but definitely far from the worst

      • Yep probably true. All the trips to the CBD branch and hours on the phone probably cost me enough to offset a more expensive card.

        • +1

Depends on your patience and tolerance at the end of the day, I reckon.

ANZ has been by far the worst for me. The last time they conditionally approved then rejected me. I rang up and the guy said whoops it was an error and you should be ok. Rang back again a week later and they said the same thing but still crickets.

I got fed up, so I started leaving public messages (civil) on the ANZ Facebook page. That was on a Friday. Monday morning got the text message that I'd been approved and card was in the mail.

I wasn't taking the ding on my credit score without a fight.

    • +2

Extra card fees are well worth it? Strongly disagree, all the banks can sometimes be difficult to deal with and could say this about any credit card deal.

Extra fees guarantee nothing except less cash in your pocket

      • +1

        This.

This is OzBargain haha. Aim is to get the lowest or $0 annual fee for the card, for the max points :D

  • I don't currently have any StG accounts open, but I can logon to my netbank and apply from inside there.
Unfortunately it's not clear whether the first year annual fee waiver will apply or not, so I'm not quite game enough to try it.

    • You need to risk it for the biscuit.

      • +1

I have account with SG and can see the offer for $0 AF for existing customer & 0% BT for 24months as well .

    • +1

I signed up to an earlier deal with a $99 fee.

Their auto email for the credit card application had the wrong business hours for support. I reported it via their complaints portal and they waived the fee without even having to ask.

    • You should be alright, i've logged in on a couple of computers now and when logging out, it shows up with the offer. I've applied

  • +6

I would suggest anyone trying to save the Qantas points for business class flights to check the availability on their desired routes first, just to get a general idea on the availability. Qantas points are easy to come by but very difficult to redeem esp for business class in and out of Australia. For those who are in the same boat as me (e.g. having a couple of millions Qantas points sitting idle and can't be redeemed), maybe saving Velocity points instead. It's good for redeeming on Singapore Airlines or Etihad Airways as both airlines have much better availability than Qantas and its alliance in terms of getting in and out of Australia.

    • True.

The availability is a bit of a dog's breakfast though as I found out on the weekend trying to book business class flights to Fiji. Got to the final page to confirm and it locked up, and I reloaded and it said it was sold out.

Rang up call centre and they said same thing.

Five hours later in the morning I took a chance and the flights I was looking at reappeared. Booked it and then when logging back into my Qantas account, it had all the other fares to other destinations I tried to book, in my cart.

I have a feeling when it's locked up they don't release it right away, and it makes it look like they're sold out when they might not be :/

      • +1

I used to also encountered this problem but I believe there's something wrong with their payment system when you're trying to redeem the flights. This is not something related to the rewards flight availability. As in your case, I think you were trying to redeem the flights on Fiji Airways? FJ normally has good availability if you book well in advanced, but that's the end of the nice story for Qantas availability.

        • I was on FJ flights. Funnily enough when I did seat selection the planes weren't even half full. It's silly how they do it but it is what it is.

    • +2

Yeah their business class redemption has been so patchy. Been trying to get Qatar biz class but that's like none existent until next year.

      • Qatar airways is very very stingy for their business class availability, when they do release, it'll be snapped up pretty quickly. CX and JL have better availability but even then, it's hard to find more than 2 seats on a single flight. It's very common to find up to 3 or 4 seats on SQ if you book well in advanced and that's why Velocity points may be a better option.

        • Yeah but Q-suites 😭

          • @nightelves: I did a search late last year or early this year to confirm the points cost to europe and I seem to remember there were heaps of availability with Qatar, but checked again recently and yeah seems to be all gone even after scrolling through months ahead. Definitely would prefer the Qsuites option to emirates or cathay, not that those are available either lol.

            • @vawiyoci: Yeah I checked as well and it seems they're all dried up. There were definitely plenty and the end of 2021

              • @nightelves: Would it be because they were all removed from the airline's side or were they all simply booked up?

                • +1

@vawiyoci: Think they were snapped up because of the demand for travel. Good article just released today: https://www.executivetraveller.com/news/why-it-s-almost-impo…

                  • @nightelves: Just did a search again for flights to Europe and finally found some Qatar ones in October. Also wow fees are up to $1300 return per person now.

After reading through your article it does make the factors seem pretty obvious: number of flights aren't back up to pre-covid levels yet + a lot of people trying to fly again + huge bank of unused and possibly expiring points (though this shouldn't be a factor with Qantas points).

                    • @vawiyoci: I find if you can fly out to a cheaper Asian country the fees are a lot cheaper. Manila to Europe in biz class was only $65 from memory.

                      • @nightelves: Wow that's a huge difference. I'm assuming this is with their main airline and not Cebu lol? Also is there a huge difference in quality for business class though or pretty similar?

                        • @vawiyoci: Product is all the same. Just different airports charge more tax than others. Australian airport being one of them as well. Hence if you can get a one way to Asia and fly out from there you'll save a lot of taxes. Do a search in economy and you'll see. From Manila to Europe is flying Qatar Airways btw so not their airline.

                          • @nightelves: Seems a bit hard to find through Qantas' search engine, I suppose once more seats become available you'll have to manually book each leg of the route maybe?

    • Yeah pretty rubbish for business aside from domestic or short international flights (where its the same plane as domestic anyway without a fully reclinable seat) where you might snag something on short notice.

  • +1

Any idea of minimum income for the 6k lowest limit?

    • -1

Usually it's around $75k income for a platinum card from memory

    • +3

Generally it's 35k income for the platinum tier with the 6k credit limits, and 75k for the signature cards with the 15k minimum credit limits.
