Asus Vivobook Pro 14 OLED 2.8k 90Hz i5-11300H 8GB RAM 256GB SSD US$445.14 (~A$654) Delivered @ Newegg

Hello

Seems like a decent deal for a basic laptop with a great screen.

Specifications:

14" WQXGA+ (2880 x 1800) 16:10 OLED Screen 400 nits display with ultra-slim 4-sided NanoEdge bezels
Intel Core i5-11300H
256GB M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD
8GB DDR4 RAM

EDIT - some more information:

  • Shipped from Newegg US, ASUS AFAIK has a worldwide 24 month warranty for laptops
  • Will need a plug/converter for charging
  • Screen has PWM below 50% brightness so keep it above that for best results :)
  • Only SSD is upgradable
  • Dark mode + dark colour themes, autohide taskbar and set screen to turn off after 15 min are good ways to mitigate risk of burn in

Wow this is so cheap for a laptop with a good screen

  • +15

Found my answer to memory upgrade
Cons: Battery life is short (battery saver mode is a must), the ram cannot be upgraded, and the wifi 6 chip isn't the Intel model. (I think it was MediaTek but I can't remember)

    • no ram upgrade 😬

      • the mediatek wifi isnt an issue, just buy an intel card and upg.

also there's only a single m2 slot so. your storage options are limited

dual slots should be the norm… i mean even acer give you two mostly

  • +6

I am a bit worry about screen burn in with OLED display on laptop lol

    • +1

Just ruined my oled phone with burn in :/

I forgot it was oled. At least it's 4 years old and tbh i don't care that much. But i could not handle burn in on a monitor or tv

      • Yea with windows the status bar is easy to burn in as it never move on main screen so I try to avoid OLED on labtop

        • +1

Yep. But tbh for $657 its a fair risk

        • +1

You can set to auto hide Windows task bar.

        • is there any 'power on hours' on oled firmware or driver nvram module?

    • +11

from experience with OLED laptops in the past:
      - make sure your wallpaper and lock screen are 100% black
      - disable all icons on the desktop, desktop needs to be pitch black - run apps from windows menu or taskbar
      - taskbar can and will burn-in slowly, try to have it pitch black as well, with fewest icons possible for applications you need and start menu

should be fine for photo editing and media consumption. video editing will be limited by RAM

      • +10

Can also have the taskbar set to auto hide

        • +1

can do, from experience though the implementation is rather annoying (however last time I tried it was in Windows 8).
          yes worth giving a shot

          • +1

@shabaka: I always use auto hide, you’ll get used to it quick

      • Is it that much of an issue? My last laptop lasted me 10 years!

        • +4

Yours probably wasn't OLED, probably TN.

      • +10

Defeats the purpose of having an OLED screen with so many precautions.

        • +3

it's same as OLED panels in mobile phones and TV's, really, nothing different here.

if you want an OLED panel, and you want to use it for applications where screen response is critical (like photo editing), it's a normal practice to do what I outlined above. saves battery life, too

if you just want to use for media consumption and usual productivity, just use it as your level of comfort dictates

        • It might sound like a lot but that really is like… less than 2 minutes work as a once off when you first set up the machine.

          • Change wallpaper/lockscreen
          • Remove desktop icons
          • Auto hide taskbar
      • +8

Sounds like you're saying to just keep the screen off…

        • +1

not really, just to minimize unnecessary wear. like I said above, depends on what you want to use it for. if it's just general productivity and media consumption, you can do what you want.

but if you think about editing photos on it, and improve battery life, too, those are your basics

      • +3

Very well.. you can turn off the laptop to save the oled burn

      • Hmmm, maybe there's some way to code an 'oled on count up timer'. I did a quick search on AlternativeTo https://alternativeto.net/browse/search/?q=oled%20count%20up… and https://alternativeto.net/browse/search/?q=amoled

I probably should check producthunt but I don't actually know if they do apps. Hmm update. Checked it… seems a bit of an untapped market.

This looks like an opportunity for someone to make a rad tool, to save the rad screen? could have a rad reminder every now and then as well… even get some rad photos for a screensaver and auto-dim… etc.

      • Haha remind on a Steven He episode where he keeps telling the guy to make the scene blacker and blacker eventually just turn the camera off. That what this OLED needs, just use it with the power off and no burn in

    • +3

Had OLED Thinkpad for 3 years used everyday no burn in.

      • yeah on YouTube there are people who never cared about burn in and did nothing to prevent it, and report none, fir example on Alienware with OLED

  • +4

    Crazy good price.

Only drawback I can pick is no power delivery or display over USB C, and for thirsty users needing to add more RAM themselves. But this is purely situational, it'll be great for most users.

    Great find!

    • +6

According to the description it is a Thunderbolt 4 port with PD so should support external display and charging via USB-C. But unfortunately the 8GB of RAM is the deal breaker for me. Otherwise this would have been an ideal candidate for an external GPU setup.

      • +3

Oh, this must be an updated model, as previous Vivobook Pro's didnt have Thunderbolt 4. Appreciate you pointing this out.

Yes agreed, give me 16GB RAM and we're on a winner.

    • +3

ASUS website claims TB4 with Display support over USB-C

      https://www.asus.com/Laptops/For-Home/Vivobook/Vivobook-Pro-…

      • +1

Appears you are correct, as previous Vivobook Pro models didn't have Thunderbolt 4.

      • Keen selling by any chance? Was few hours too late…

  • +1

Hold on, this ships from the US right? Also ram is not upgradeable?

    • +2

      Correct and correct.

  • +1

    Has US power cable then?

  • +2

anyone knows how newegg handles international warranty like this?

  • +1

    $664 delivered for me.

    • +1

You must be in the Republic of Western Australia.

  • -6

PWM and only 400nits for OLED. Not for me.

    • +8

Any you can recommend instead in this price range?

  • +2

    1.4 KG is a little heavy for a 14" non-gaming notebook.
But I suppose they need a big heat sink for that power hungry inefficient 11th gen Intel CPU.
Still a bargain if the battery life is reasonable.. big if.

    • 63 whr battery isn't that big considering the oled is going to be a big power draw, and as you say intel isn't that efficient. I would guess 6ish hours regular use

  • +1

wow this is really good price. Is the warranty applicable in Oz though?

  • What other oled laptop is around this price range?

    • +1

Asus have a 15" OLED Vivobook for around $1k, but it is 1080p and 60hz. The screen on the Vivobook Pro 14 is much better.

  • +1

Have 2 laptops at home and still got tempted 😆

  • how long is the delivery?

    • ordered yesterday, got shipment confirmation today, DHL estimate says next Friday

  • +2

Bought purely on the praises here. Such is the faith I put on fellow Ozbargainers.

Planning to use this as a backup device when I'm traveling (in case I lose my mobile phone) and also so I have a bigger screen for night uses. Please tell me I'll be okay.

    • +2

Please tell me I'll be okay.

      Panik

      • does it really matter

if you dont like it this flush easily on ebay gumtree

i wonder however if Asus in Homebush will cover this????

    • worst case is that you don't like it, can still sell it easily at this price range

    • +1

Surely Google drive is a better back up and i can confirm..it wont take up over 1.4kg of your baggage allowance ;)

      • I will have no other smart device besides my phone when traveling. I know it's not the same as having a second phone. At least the laptop may help retrieve stuff off the internet (and I can use it to browse/watch at night).

  • How are people bringing it into Australia, and dealing with returns/warranty?

    • +6

How are people bringing it into Australia

Strapped around their belly. Bali9 style.

      • prison pocket

        • Heard of a shank and knives being shoved up there. But a full size laptop is gonna hurt.

  • +1

according to spec page memory not expandable
    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/systems-dev…

also confirmed by following youtube shows no slot for memory upgrade
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87KzLgpBQ_4

    • +1

      deal killer

      • +1

        Just download some RAM..

    • just checked some youtube video looks like this is soldered onboard and there's no additional slot, i think what they meant is that when you purchase you can buy 8gb or 16gb, yep wish this is upgradable. unfortunately no

  • +2

    Thanks OP, perfect timing!
    AUD $647.1 on Citi Diner

  • Is the main draw for this that it has OLED and otherwise it would be just okay for the price?

    • +1

Even with a low end TN display it's still a decent price provided you can live with only 8Gb RAM.

      • Okay thanks

  • +6

just to highlight a couple of caveats:
    - RAM is soldered, no RAM upgrade possible
    - only one NVMe drive under the hood, no easy way to expand storage apart from clone/replace with bigger drive depending on your needs (or can use external USB-C SSD's, they are getting cheap and quick)

other people keep asking, so here's another couple things:
    - this does have TB4, supports external USB-C display if need be, and USB-C charging
    - this is a great choice for photo editing. DCI-P3 coverage with hi-res OLED panel at such a low price, the only alternative would be iPad Pro, and it's actually more expensive and has smaller screen

  • +3

Looks like a 2 piece charger so the AC power lead to the brick can easily be replaced with an AU cable. Just check the AC adaptor takes 240V.

  • Just one question , is it a touch screen?

    • It's not a touch screen

  • +3

    Would've been amazing but not buying a max 8GB ram in 2022. Maybe in 2017 I would've.

  • +1

8gb is fine for most. Browsing, YouTube, office

  • Can it run any games like far cry?

    Iris Xe Graphics card good?

    • -1

expect maybe 5 fps at full resolution on low. 30 fps on games at 720p on low

    • can easily play older titles like Portal or HL2

    • +1

No, but the display quality will make you cry from afar

  • Ordered one thanks OP. Has been researching this a bit. Thunderbolt 4 from ASUS site of the model "supports display / power delivery" so hopefully can be recharged by a PD battery if needed and although the manual suggested charging using the charging brick, it has "it may take longer to charge your notebook pc through a low voltage power source" in the thunderbolt 4 section.

    • Selling your device by any chance? I was a few hours too late…

  • +1

Upvoting, as it's great for people using it for very light purposes, but 8GB is honestly getting nearly unusable, with Windows and applications being as bloated as they are. I cannot fathom why they would combine such an awesome screen and CPU with only 8GB of RAM. It's like a shiny Ferrari with a 50km/h speed limiting device.

    • +1

Probably why it's cheap, otherwise they may be charging Ferrari pricing

      • With 16GB, I'd pay $1k easily.

    • it's great for people using it for very light purposes

Useful for say running Blue Iris 24/7?

Blue Iris is one software which isn't available on the mac.

  • is the ram a row of chips ? or so-dimm ? otherwise, very good specs for the price

    • +1

      It's a row of chips

      • +1

looks like there are some unpopulated pads for GPU + VRAM, shall we solder some ?

  • Excellent price. Surely this is a price error, but if it's not, whoever purchases this will enjoy a $1K+ laptop for $650 :)

    • +3

8 GB RAM may be the reason for that price

      • +1

That's for sure, but the incredible 90Hz OLED 2.8K display makes it all worth it. Believe it or not, for $650, not everyone needs more than 8GB of RAM. An excellent display and H series processor is good enough

        • As soon as a few programs are open along with a few tabs in a browser, 8GB starts getting used to the full capacity. For future proofing, I think 8GB is not enough.
