500Mbps & nbn fibre upgrades

As I mentioned we're now offering 500Mbps/50Mbps, which with a 12 month discount is a great option if you're eligable for nbn's fibre upgrade program, which you can find more details about at https://leaptel.com.au/nbn-fibre-upgrade/.

Existing customers

If you are an existing customer and have not had a promotion in the last 12 months we will be happy to provide you with this discount. Please just contact our support team which you can do very easily at https://leaptel.com.au/contact/.

In any other circumstances also just reach out and see what our team can do, we are willing to assess any reasonable requests on a case by case basis.

Opticomm

If you're in an Opticomm area we have different 6 month offers which can be found at https://leaptel.com.au/opticomm-plan/. We'd love to match the nbn offer but Opticomm's wholesale pricing is more expensive (and they just put their prices up again!) than nbn and we presently absorb a $99 ex gst activation charge for all new connections alongside other charges.

Speed & Service

We are with nbn directly on 121/121 nbn POIs which means guaranteed no CVC congestion as we control our own CVC and have lots of headroom.

IPoE/DHCP is our standard connection method (no vlan tagging required) and we are happy for you to BYO modem. We do support PPPoE as well should you wish to use that connection method.

All connections are CGNAT by default, however you can disable CGNAT and receive a IPv4 dynamic IP at no cost through our portal, full details at https://leaptel.com.au/faq-cgnat/.

We support IPv6 in a trial/alpha configuration and can be toggled on in our portal.

We have points of presence in data centres in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney with peering and transit in each. You can check out our looking glass at - https://lg.leaptel.com.au/.

Our support team is located in Box Hill, Melbourne, so when you have a problem you're talking to someone local. Wait time are kept to a minimum and we support livechat and email tickets as well.

Who we are

Many of you won't know who Leaptel is. And that's fair, we've mostly been focused on providing services on the Opticomm network which has allowed us to do what we're now doing on nbn.

To keep it brief, this is who we are:

We are 100% Australian owned and operated.
We are 100% committed to providing a high quality product.
We are 100% dedicated to providing the best customer service possible.
We are 100% devoted to improving every day in everything we do.
We are 100% willing to own our mistakes and learn from them.

And I think our reviews back this up.

Please check out our Whirlpool Thread if you'd like to know more about us.

I will happily answer any questions here as well of course.

Edit: 30/09/2022 - We will be continuing this deal and it will last at least until the end of October.

  • Does anyone have a referral code? I guess it does not stack up

  • Couple of questions. Are you able to move up and down the tiers and pay the offer price throughout the 12 months? Specifically the 250 and 500 tiers? I mainly want the 250 but would be keen to try the 500 out on occasion.

Also does leaptel have full ipv6 support?

Any gamers able to comment on their PSN and XBL downfalls speeds? And also latency?

    • +1

You are not locked into your speed, even if you took up a contract for the modem. If you move to a higher plan we will honour the discount as you move plans, Eg. You signup with 50/20 with $15 off for 12 months and then move to 100/20, you can take that $15 off for 12 months with you as you move.

If you downgrade you will lose your promo amount if you moved between the two different tiers. Eg. If you moved from 250 -> 100, where the discount drops from $20 to $15 then you would no longer get $20. At present if you request it our team will tack on the $15 discount if its a current promotional offer for the remainder of the term. I can't gurantee this might not change at some point in the future however, ultimately you're signing up to get the discount on the plan you sign up on so anything we offer beyond that in terms of flexability is at our discrection.

We provide an ipv6 trial mode which can be enabled via our portal. I (and many of the team here) have been using it since day 1 and haven't had any issues. It is a trial though so consider it a bonus.

I'll let others offer feedback on your last question.

I enabled IPv6 from account but I am not getting IPv6 DHCP on router, only IPv4 CGNAT. I am on FTTC. Is there any other config to be done ?

        • +1

I would encourage you to speak with our support team, but the most likely reason is going to be some configuration setting in your router.

  • +1

I signed up this morning and was connected within 2 hours, on HFC. It was a fast smooth process; Internet shut off, Superloop text me to confirm I'm closing my account with them, Leaptel text me the churn is complete, and I got an email from Leaptel with my login details. I didn't need to change any settings on my router, so I'm happy there too. Connection seems faster without as many dropouts.

  • Have been with Leaptel for a few months now, HFC connection.
They have been really good to deal with when I've needed to call them, and knowledgeable to boot.

  • Do you have an app to manage your connection?

    • At present we do not. Our new portal which is currently under development will be far more mobile friendly than the current iteration, and we may roll it out as an app.

      • Thanks for confirming. I think it's best to have an app like Aussie BB, very easy to monitor data usage. Move up or down the different tiers. I would miss that, I signed up with you.

        • Understandable. We're working on developing those in a mobile form.

The current portal does allow you to check your usage it's just not very mobile friendly and while you can't move up or down tiers in the current portal, we are very easy to contact to arrange to do it (very minimal wait times and we will handle it over livechat & email too if you don't want to call us up).

          • @LeaptelRep: Perfect, thank you. I was using a 500 GB limited connection in terms of data, I never ran out so I never thought of changing anything. Until this month, when I finally ran out, I was switched to unlimited connection with 4$ extra, I just clicked a button on the app.

I was paying 79$ for 50/20, 500GB. Now I will be on same connection with unlimited for 60$, 12 months. After that 75$ which is worth it for me, because, WFH might end any day.. 😂

  • What is the correct value for IPv6 Prefix Delegation size. I saw the value is /56 but it not working for my pfSense.

    • I have checked with our team and /56 is the correct IPv6 Prefx Delegation size. If youre still having issues please reach out to our support team but note that IPv6 issues are escalated to our level 2 team as its a trial program and it can take a little bit of time to get assistance.

  • Dumb question re: churning from another ISP
Do I just click signup with Leaptel, or do I also need to go to the other ISP and tell them to cancel; if I choose the "replace this service" option

    • +1

Replacing the service is a churn which should notify the losing ISP that you've moved to another provider. How they handle that notification will vary. Most ISPs will terminate billing etc. but I cannot make that guarantee for you. I always advise that to be 100% sure it is good to confirm with your old ISP unless they notify you.

  • How long is the churn process, I'm currently with superloop on fttc. Can't be stuck with no internet as WFH, is anyone that has switched able to comment was it seamless etc

    • It was under 2 hours from when I signed up to being churned. It was probably quicker than that but I wasn't paying attention to the time. See my comment above for more details.

    • +1

You can future date your order with us so that we place it with nbn overnight (eg at midnight). This is probably the most guaranteed way of making sure you have minimal downtime. In most cases your internet will be moved to us by nbn within minutes of us placing the order.

      • From my understanding when an order is put through your website, it's mostly an automated process within nbn? Is this right? And if so shouldn't matter even if it's done late at night?

        • It's mostly automated but there is still a human element where we check and approve your order to ensure everything looks correct about it. During operational hours (9am - 9pm weekdays and 9am - 7pm weekends) the team handles these pretty seamlessly but outside those hours they aren't checked until 9am the next day.

  • So I just signed up to this and cancelled my Superloop account. Superloop asked why cancelling, i said because the price was going up as end of promotion, they then offered the same promotion ($20/month credit) again for another 6 months. Nah, time for a change.

  • Gday I churned away from my current supplier, to Leaptel.
Will this happen on a Sunday (overlooked this), or will it have to wait until Monday?

    • Hi Pixelman,

Your churn should have gone through on the Sunday but I've only just seen your message. Please let me know if you're having any difficulties.

  • Anyone able to send me a referral code to sign up?

Thanks someone has sorted me out!

    • -2

If you are taking up one of our promotional offers you will gain no benefit from our refer a friend program as it conflicts with the promotional discounts we offer for 12 months.. It's also an explicit violation of the program to share them via this site, not that we can prevent it in anyway.

  • Finally done cancelling TPG, now just have to wait 30 days. Do I churn on the cancelling day (20 Oct) or a day after?

    • You would want to be sure on what day TPG is going to end the connection to decide that for sure. Personally I'd want to do it the day before the cancellation day rather than risking having some downtime.

  • No FW+, pity….looking at moving to another provider, this looks like a good deal for those that can get it.

  • Does Leaptel allow you to open up ports if we disable CGNAT?

    • We don't block any ports so therefore if you disable CGNAT you can port-forward as required if UPnP isn't sufficient for you.

  • Hey guys, I just wanted to check how long this promo will run for? I'd like to switch but only just today auto-paid my current ISP invoice for another month. I note that the promotion URL mentions September in its title. Hoping this doesn't elude to the fact that it finishes shortly

    • +1

Leaptel allow you to sign up with the connection date in the future.

    • +2

At present we have no plans to end this promotion anytime soon. We can withdraw it at anytime but it doing very well for us and its a sustainable promotion for us so we plan to continue it at least through October.

      • What is the process for signing up and provisioning an install for a future date? Can we do this ourselves on the website or does customer service need to do this for us?

        • When you sign up there is an option on the signup form to select the date you want the service to go active. No need to speak to the CS team but they'll be happy to help to.

          • @LeaptelRep: Sounds good, I have 2 weeks left in the billing month for my current ISP so I am looking forward to try out Leaptel.

            • @Viospeed: Glad to hear you're giving us a go. I am confident you'll have no regrets!

              • @LeaptelRep: Cool, I put through an order for next week. Will these be processed in the morning on the date selected?

  • All signed up and activated on 500/50 - very happy so far thanks OP.

    • Great to hear :)

  • I signed up over the weekend for a changeover date being tomorrow. The email came through with my details and plan I requested and to say they received my request but there’s no mention the date I requested would be ok. Is it just a wait and see if the changeover will happen tomorrow? Or is there a way to see if this is in the queue for tomorrow?

    • The email you received doesn't include the date. I will need to look into getting that added. If you have any concerns about your specific order please reach out to our CS team. They will be happy to help.

      • Thanks @LeaptelRep. Correct email didn’t include the date. I just gave your team a call and loved the service. Barely any hold time and was able to confirm the order will be in queue for 12.01am tomorrow. Should take 1-4 hours and i’ll receive an email confirming change; so hopefully ready when I get up.

        • Update
12.03am - sms from Superloop account now closed
12.10am - received email from Leaptel, order is being processed
12.15am - email confirming service is now ready

          • @Zippy135: That's what we like to see. Efficiency from all parties :)

          • @Zippy135: I have similar experience. If I were asleep I probably wouldn't notice that it has been swap.
            good job. testing it now.

    • Yes I just had a look, my confirmation email didn’t have the request seat date on it either.

      • Yeah it's an oversight on my part actually because I wrote the notification template and it never crossed my mind.

        • I should say I've now got a ticket open with our dev team to get this rectified.

  • I’m on FTTP and signed up a week before the end of cycle for my old provider. I’m assuming it’s just a network cable swap on the NTD when the line is active?

    • Yep that would be the case unless you've selected to replace your old provider on the NTD.

  • Would a Belong modem work with Leaptel ? Can you confirm the price of modem if we buy the 12 month plan from you ? is it $150 ?

    • You can either get the router for us for $170 ($150 modem + $20 shipping) on a month-to-month contract or for $20 ($20 shipping) if you select 24 month contract.

With that said, most BYO routers work with us as we use DHCP/IPOE. The exceptions tend to be providers who vlan tag their connections (generally just TPG) and their routers may work if config is changed.

      • Thanks. Appreciated.

  • Connected in just over an hour, so far so good.

  • Does Leaptel have their own backhaul or use Vocus etc?

    • We are connected directly to nbn at all 121 POIs and manage our own CVC if that's what you're asking.

Backhaul from each POI to our network is a combination of Optus wavelengths and Telstra dark fibres which we purchase through Field Solutions Group who manage POI backhaul for a number of nbn providers.

  • I signed up for the 500/50 with FTTP upgrade. NBN delayed the upgrade a week, but they got it done on Friday and so far no complaints. Speed tests show ~540 MBit down, and although the speed tests only show 36 MBit up, I can upload to Google Drive / AWS at up to 6MB/s, so I'm certainly getting around the 50MBit up. Also, I'm seeing essentially no packet loss in games, and good latency as well.

Long story short, it's early days, but looking good so far. Thanks.

    • +2

Good to hear it's gone well so far.

I thought I'd comment on the 36Mbps upload. nbn does not overprovision upload (as of yet). Furthermore their policer on upload is brutal. Because what is happening is basically you're hitting the nbn policer, it shapes the upload, which drops the speed on the upload test, then it rebounds and repeats until the test ends. Kind of /\/\/\ if that makes sense.

On downloads we can shape it as the traffic passes through us before it goes to nbn then to you, but with upload the traffic is coming from you, through nbn, and then to us to your destination. The solution to this if you want to see higher upload speed on speedtests is to shape the upload on your router itself to 50Mbps. Unfortunately very few consumer grade routers offer this functionality.

In practical use though, as you noted, you do get the upload in real use, it's just an artifice of how speedtests work that they can't accurately record this.

I believe nbn has come under some pressure to overprovision upload which would help, but no firm commitments have been made.

  • Hi @LeaptelRep,

I'm currently with Mates and have a home phone (voip) bundled in my plan as well. My billing cycle is every 2nd of the month and I don't think they prorata the remaining unused days if I terminate early. What is the best/painless way to move to Leaptel? Do I still need to call Mates to cancel my plan? Or do I just move to Leaptel and my Mates plan cancels automatically?

    Thanks.

    • +1

      Hi Pums04,

Based on what you've written, to move your nbn service I would suggest putting in a signup with us that is scheduled to activate on the 4th of the month. This should mean your service with Mate finishes before the rollover date on the 5th. This is assuming you are doing a service transfer. Where this might not be the case is if you're on nbn FTTP or Fixed Wireless and elected to order an additional service rather than replacing the Mate service. You would choose this during the signup process on our website.

If you're porting your VOIP to us we should be able to schedule that to happen on the 4th as well.

I can't speak to Mate's processes as they're not us :) I would always encourage customers who are concerned about the service transfer process to check with the losing provider, this minimises any risks of unexpected billing.

      • Thanks @LeaptelRep.

I'm not sure why I would activate Leaptel on the 4th of the month when my Mates billing cycle is 2nd of the month. Are you sure Mates will not bill me for another month?

Btw, I'm on FTTP. Also, I do not mind losing my current home phone number as we only use it as backup (i.e. if we nobody answers their mobile phones). I've had experience with porting voip before, the losing provider cannot release the phone number the same time as the nbn plan (they said it's the system (their's or NBN) not allowing them to do it quickly).

Ok, I will give Mates a call (and say "Bye Mates!" at the end of the conversation).

        • +1

          Hi Pums04,

Apologies for some reason I thought your service was rolling over on the 5th. I think I was looking at the current date after reading your first message. Sorry!

Order it for the 1st of November would be my advice.

Porting can be lined up for sure, but yes it is nothing to do with nbn at all. But I'll leave it to you to decide if VOIP is something you want to continue with.

  • Hi @LeaptelRep I will be moving from another provider and planning to sign up for the Turbo boost plan. I see that your plans minimum cost is calculated for 24 months. does it mean that this is not month to month and i should sign up a 24 month contract? please can you clarify?

    • Hi nektminute - no that is the minimum cost over 24 months. As per the CIS and signup form we offer both month to month and 24 months, and pro-rata is available on cancellation upon request.

      • Thanks a lot. I will give you guys a try. i checked out Whirlpool and it was great to know that Matt looks after his customers. Was looking at Superloop, but those responses on Whirpool turned me your way. I hope I get good speed. I am super frustrated after my experience with More

  • Signed up to be connected on 21/11/2022 but billed immediately… not impressed.

    • Hi Khell,

Can you send me a private message with your details so I can look into your order. Your service should only be billed once it goes active so I am concerned your service has gone active.

Edit: unless you're referring to pre-payment we collect?

      • Yes I was immediately charged the plan cost when I entered my card on signup. I assume that’s the prepayment.

        • Yes we collect a pre-payment for the first month and during the signup process (the screen where you fill in your details) it is advised there is an upfront payment.

  • Hi Rep, does Telstra Smart Modem 2 work with Leaptel NBN? Thanks!

    • Hi Deal Sniper,

I believe it should, as it does DHCP/IPoE by default which we support. I cannot 100% guarantee however than another internet provider's router will work with our network but I am confident.

  • Would a 250/100 tier be possible?

I'm on 100/40 and would like more upload bandwidth, but the choices are slim, and the prices start jumping quite a bit

    • +1

      Hi idjces,

There is a 250/100 tier from nbn but the nbn cost on it is very high, higher than even the 1000/50 plan that we're shaping to make our 500/50 plan. We do plan to offer 250/100 as an upgrade from 250/25 in the future, but I expect the retail price would be $170+.

The 500/50 plan we offer is $10 more than 250/25 for the first 12 months, at $109 per month. I think that's really the best solution we can offer you at this stage.

Hopefully in the future nbn will consider the paltry upload they provide on retail plans, but particularly the 250/25 as your complaint about losing upload speed when "upgrading" from 100/40 is a common one.

Sorry I couldn't be more help at this stage.

  • Hi @LeaptelRep
I have just switched over from TPG to leaptel. We have spent an hour on the phone with your support trying to get our tplink VX420 modem to work. I noticed you mentioned some config setting need to be changed on TPG modems. Can you let me know what these are? Thanks

    • Hi Trickle,

I've replied to the private message you've sent through.

  • Switched over from TPG to Leaptel on the 19th, the churn started right after midnight and waited 2-3 hours before internet connection was detected. Can confirm the 50/20 connection(PPPoE/login password) is working on a TPG supplied TP-Link Archer VR1600v. You may have to call tech support to enable PPPoE on your line if your modem doesn't support IPoE, I didn't have to. Your login details will be emailed to you.

  • Hi, I have gotten an upgrade to FTTP 6 months ago with Aussie Broadband. I want to churn but worried about the cancellation fee charged by NBN. Hear mixed stories about when the cancellation fee applies. Could you please let me know if I will be charged a cancellation fee though I will keep an eligible FTTP service with Exetel.

    • Hi LookforTV,

It is going to depend on the terms under which ABB charges you. Remember you have no relationship to nbn, just to ABB. ABB has the relationship with nbn. So I would recommend you speak to ABB and understand under what circumstances you'd be charged.

The terms of the nbn promo are hard for providers to accurately just pass on the charges they receive from nbn, which is why many (including us) are making it a straightforward stay with us for 12 months arrangement.

But I can't speak for how ABB is doing it as it is a different company.

    • Aussie broadband have recently changed their terms and conditions so it is unlikely you will be charged the $200 at all (there is a long whirlpool thread about it) but you should confirm with them.
